On their weekly Penn State football podcast, host Adam Bittner and Daily Collegian/Post-Gazette insider Seth Engle discuss Michigan's College Football Playoff national championship victory over Washington in the context of coach James Franklin's Nittany Lions program. How did Franklin fall so far behind Michigan's Jim Harbaugh after beating him in three out of four years from 2017-2020? What lessons should Penn State learn from the Wolverines' ascent, particularly from their continuity in the form of players like J.J. McCarthy, Roman Wilson and Blake Corum. And what did their domination of Michael Penix Jr. and the Huskies signal about the future of the Big Ten wen Washington, USC, UCLA and Oregon join in 2024? Our duo tackles those topics and also checks in on recruiting news with the commitments of receiver Julian Fleming and Nolan Rucci over the past week. Plus, the possible looming pledge of Georgia cornerback transfer A.J. Harris. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It's that time of year. We wonder if Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh will bolt for the NFL. Specifically, will Harbaugh be the next head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers? What's not to love? Great weather, great quarterback, big names on defense! But would he take the gig? Harbaugh has a contract extension sitting on his desk. But Michigan wants him to sign an addendum stating he will not look for an NFL job once the college football season is over. We don't think he will sign the addendum. But we don't necessarily think he will bolt for the Bolts. We weigh both sides of the debate. In portal news, former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Kyle McCord found a new home… in Syracuse. Hmm. Penn State hired former Indiana Hoosiers coach Tom Allen as their defensive coordinator to replace Manny Diaz. In Big 10 basketball, the Purdue Boilermakers defeated the top ranked Arizona Wildcats this weekend and Lady Hawkeyes star Caitlin Clark reached another milestone. We celebrate all of this plus point out our Big 10 Top 10 on Locked on Big 10 with Craig Shemon. On this Wednesday episode of The College Football Playoff Show, Doug Lesmerises and Shehan Jeyarajah dig into the Big Ten with two matchups that matter for the playoff race looming for the conference this weekend. Plus, is Oregon an anchor for Ohio State or is Ohio State a balloon for Oregon when it comes to playoff rankings? And how often will we start seeing the Good Ducks compared to the Bad Ducks? But the focus is on Ohio State-Penn State and Michigan-Michigan State this weekend. The Nittany Lions are coming off an awful loss to Illinois -- can they rally to give the Buckeyes a game, or is their offense just too wounded? In the undefeated showdown in East Lansing, both teams are undefeated and Michigan is ranked higher and favored. But Doug argues for why the Spartans are actually the better team -- unless Michigan goes to freshman JJ McCarthy at quarterback. Could Jim Harbaugh make that genius move in this huge game? Doug and Shehan talk about welcoming either Pitt, Wake Forest or Michigan State to the playoff discussion, and they kick one team out of the mix. In between, they release their first shadow committee rankings, which will become a regular part of the show when the real playoff committee rankings debut next week. There was some big news that came down the 247Sports pipeline last week; former Washington Director of Player Personnel Cooper Petagna was joining the network as a National Recruiting Analyst. Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds spoke to Cooper this week to talk about his Louisiana roots, how he got into the business, his move to Washington and how that came about, his takes on the head coaches he's been able to work with, including Cincinnati's Luke Fickell, Michigan's Jim Harbaugh, and Chris Petersen. Petagna calls Petersen a 'true one percenter', a coach that will not only make you better at what you do but will also make you a better person, the type of person you want to be surrounded by. Cooper also talks about his early time at LSU and his recollection of players like current Seattle safety Jamal Adams. But the bulk of the conversation surrounded the mechanics of the prospect evaluation process from someone who worked in a number of big-time FBS recruiting offices, with a particular emphasis on Washington. How does the process begin, and what steps do the coaches take to move the process through as they vet the prospects and what they value as intangibles. Petagna also talks about the different position groups and how the evaluation process might differ when looking at offensive linemen compared to quarterbacks. And at UW, compared to other programs Petagna worked at, the key word was 'fit'. He spoke about that never-ending search for players that fit what the Huskies were looking at, and he spoke specifically about players like Trent McDuffie, Elijah Molden, Rome Odunze, and Sam Huard. Grinolds also asked Petagna about the differences between the schools he's worked at, and how regional factors and program priorities played into how recruiting was dealt with on a day-to-day basis. With Washington specifically, Petagna talked about how the Huskies went head-to-head against certain programs, like Stanford, Notre Dame, Oregon, and others, and how they approached those recruiting battles. He also spoke on Nike's influence within the Ducks' program and what makes Oregon a strong recruiting school. In Cooper's opinion, why do prospects choose specific schools? What are the most important things that they focus on when they come to that point when they're ready to commit to a school?
