Understanding your audience's psychology is the key to crafting communication that resonates.Persuading others isn't about magic spells or mind-reading tricks. According to Emily Falk, the real secret is simpler: know what your audience finds relevant, and you'll be able to craft a message that resonates.Falk is a professor of communication, psychology, and marketing at the University of Pennsylvania, Vice Dean of the Annenberg School of Communication, and director of the Communication Neuroscience Lab. In her book What We Value: The Neuroscience of Choice and Change, she reveals that our brains have what she calls a "social relevance system" — our ability to understand what other people are thinking and feeling. "I use social relevance as this kind of catchall for these thoughts about what other people are thinking and feeling, which also helps us predict what they're gonna do and how we might communicate successfully with them," she explains. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Falk and host Matt Abrahams explore how to put this insight into practice, from the power of storytelling to leveraging "neural synchrony" to create shared understanding. Whether you're motivating a team or influencing a customer, Falk offers science-backed strategies for tapping into your audience's psychology and communicating with relevance.Episode Reference Links:Emily FalkEmily's Book: What We ValueEp.39 Brains Love Stories: How Leveraging Neuroscience Can Capture People's EmotionsEp.188 Mind Reading 101: To Know What Your Audience Thinks, Just Ask  Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:47) - Neuroscience & Behavior Prediction (04:05) - Brain Systems in Persuasion (05:28) - Tailoring Messages for Impact (08:06) - Psychological Closeness & Relevance (10:34) - Power of Storytelling (13:48) - Neural Synchrony & Shared Meaning (15:33) - Better Conversations Through Sync (20:11) - Rapid-Fire Q&A with Emily Falk (24:23) - Conclusion  ********This Episode is brought to you by Strawberry.me. When you think of huge advances in digital dentistry, a lot of companies and names come up. But there are two that are really making a huge impact on how we get things done and they continue to do it with the passion of the lab industry supporting it. First up is Björn Zäuner. Björn grew up in a dental family and wanted nothing to do with teeth. We've all heard this story, right? It wasn't long before Björn had a milling center and even an ortho lab. But he noticed that miss mounted cases were a problem and a main cause to most of his remakes. So he developed Bite-Finder to use AI to find the true bite and not the one "captured" with a blue bite or iOS scanner. He talks all about what it is, how it works, how to integrate it, and how you can try it for FREE for 2 weeks. Then we meet the CEO and co-creator of exocad, Tillmann Steinbrecher. We have talked to literally hundreds of people on this podcast that all sing praises for the "purple program" and this time we get to hear the origin story. Tillmann talks about how is started as a research project where he and his partner saw potential for so much more. From walking around IDS 15 years ago with a laptop with a early version to being one of the leaders in dental design, Tillmann in his team has really changed the way labs stay ahead of the every changing workflow. He talks about the early versions, where the name and purple come from, how it's important to stay an open platform, and the importance of user feedback to keep getting better. Take it from Jennifer Ferguson from Ivoclar. If you have a PM7 (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us/products/digital-equipment/programill-pm7) or are thinking about getting a PM7 (Take it from Barb, you should), Ivoclar had launched the "Ivoclar Block Module" that can speed up milling emax (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us/products/digital-processes/ips-e.max-cad) by 45%!! The best part is that you can try it for FREE for 90 days. Listeners will discover how equanimity functions as a stabilizing force in our emotional lives. Margaret emphasizes that it allows us to experience deep compassion, loving-kindness, and joyousness without being overwhelmed by our feelings. By observing our reactions to the roadside scenarios—where a stranger elicits mild compassion, a neighbor stirs more involvement, and a best friend creates profound emotional turbulence—she elucidates the varying shades of our emotional engagement and the importance of a balanced response. Throughout the discussion, Margaret stresses the importance of "not self" (non-attachment) as a foundational practice for cultivating equanimity. This practice encourages us to observe situations with clarity and discernment, freeing us from being engulfed by our emotions. She also highlights that true compassion encompasses both emotional understanding and practical actions, such as offering assistance to those in need. Importantly, equanimity does not imply cold detachment; rather, it invites a mindful approach to life's challenges, providing us with the tools to navigate our emotions with grace.

Many therapists are conflicted about how to show up with their clients. While there is lots of training to be highly emotionally engaged with clients, there is also training that therapists should be more distant in sessions to avoid possible countertransference––which is the evoking of emotions and reactions within the therapist. What if, instead of attempting to be overly engaged or maintaining a distancing demeanor, therapists learned how to honor their humanness within their therapeutic role?  On this episode of Transforming Trauma, host Emily Ruth welcomes Karen J. Maroda, PhD., noted psychoanalyst and author, to discuss her fascinating research on countertransference.  About Karen J. Maroda: Karen J. They are looking for brands that are thoughtful, kind, caring, and empathetic.    Understand your customers' lifetime value (LTV). By recognizing a customer's potential long-term value, businesses can make better customer-focused decisions that are less about the amount they spend on any single purchase and more about nurturing relationships, ensuring positive experiences, and understanding their needs.     Small gestures and careful word choices matter. Businesses can make customers feel valued and respected by paying attention to details, like calling customers by their preferred names and avoiding generic follow-up messages. Even a simple gesture can leave a lasting positive impression, potentially leading to future business opportunities.    Building relationships with customers helps businesses stand out in a crowded market. In this episode of The Actor's Career Compass, host Martin Bentsen delves into the critical concept of the 4 levels of acting, a framework designed to help actors gauge their performance skills and understand what casting directors seek. Martin begins by addressing the double-edged sword of acting's unstructured nature, highlighting how a lack of structure can foster artistic freedom yet simultaneously obscure an actor's ability to assess and improve their performance. He introduces a numeric system to categorize acting skills into four distinct levels, ranging from beginners making basic mistakes to elite performers who leave audiences in awe with their captivating and emotionally engaging performances. The episode breaks down each level in detail, offering insights into the common pitfalls and achievements characteristic of each stage. Level 1 actors face technical challenges, such as forgetting lines or failing to connect with the audience due to basic mistakes. Level 2 actors, though technically proficient, struggle with making their performances compelling due to unclear choices. At Level 3, actors achieve clarity and focus, yet their performances may lack emotional depth or engagement. Finally, Level 4 represents the pinnacle of acting, where performers make bold, emotionally charged choices that resonate deeply with audiences. Martin emphasizes the importance of aiming for at least Level 3 in auditions to stand a chance for callbacks and encourages actors to record and analyze their performances to identify areas of improvement actively. For those navigating the competitive world of acting, this episode serves as a practical guide to self-assessment and improvement, underlining the need for actors to make strong, clear choices in their performances, especially when audition details are scarce. You can reach Martin at martin@cityheadshots.com or learn more about his work at http://www.martinbentsen.com.Additional Resources: Headshots: https://www.cityheadshots.com Shoot Footage for Your Reel: https://www.actorscreenershoot.com Edit Footage You Already Have Into a Reel: https://www.demoreelsnyc.com

Jeffrey, a renowned sales expert and best selling author, believes that the key to success in modern selling lies in understanding the past and building genuine relationships. In a conversation with Vengreso's CEO Mario Martinez Jr. on The Modern Selling Podcast, Gitomer emphasizes the importance of personalization in sales and the value of turning relationships into friendships. Gitomer challenges young salespeople to embrace the depth of personalization and move away from relying on shortcuts like AI. He encourages them to go back to their roots, tap into their family and business values, and invest time in truly understanding their customers' needs and desires. According to Gitomer, sales are made by engaging customers emotionally and proving their credibility socially. By customizing and personalizing their approach, salespeople can build trust and win more deals. The past will predict the future every single time. He emphasizes the importance of uncovering the customer's motives and needs before presenting any sales materials. By focusing on the customer's personal goals and challenges, salespeople can build a stronger emotional connection and increase their chances of making a sale. 00:36:05 - Jeffrey's Dream Jobs Jeffrey shares his dream jobs, which include being a Starbucks barista, a Walmart greeter, and a waiter at a high-end restaurant. He believes that these roles provide opportunities to connect with people on a personal level, upsell products, and make a positive impact on customers' experiences. 00:37:24 - Upselling and Emotional Connection Jeffrey discusses the power of upselling through emotional connection. He signs off with a closing statement and encourages good selling. Tap into Cultural Preferences Being sensitive to cultural differences can also significantly enhance the efficacy of the sales process. As Jeffrey points out, cultural nuances can shape the business engagement and preferences of a potential customer. By showing respect and understanding toward these differences, sales professionals can foster positive business relationships and open avenues for prospective sales within different markets. Boost Sales with Personalization Sales professionals can see a remarkable difference in their results with the strategic use of personalization. Tailoring the approach to each prospect's specific needs and circumstances forms genuine connections and stands out in a sea of generic pitches. Jeffrey Gitomer's insights on avoiding generic AI responses emphasizes the need for this tailored interaction, forming a central part of the modern selling process. Build Strong Relationships and Trust Establishing and nurturing trust with prospects plays a pivotal role in sustainable sales success, as emphasized by Jeffrey. Not only does this foster long-lasting business relationships, but it also facilitates in-depth understanding of customer needs and motives for buying. Moving from school to college or college to the first job marks significant milestones that shape our habits and preferences. This transition spawns the creation of new habits, both positive and negative, exemplified by choices such as smoking, drinking, and romance. These phases offer fertile ground for brands to establish themselves as part of these transformative experiences, thereby becoming ingrained in consumers' lives. The team at Nescafe used this insight to position coffee as the quintessential emblem of adulthood. As individuals traverse from one life stage to another, coffee emerges as a symbolic initiation into the world of grown-ups. Power of Emotional Engagement in Tech Brands Contrary to popular belief, technology-driven products are not devoid of emotion. Emotions find their place even in the realm of tech products, albeit in a different form. The key lies in crafting emotional connections that resonate with consumers.Successful tech branding hinges on establishing relevance, credibility, and trust. Ask Nestle: Personalized Nutrition for Moms Nestle's journey into personalized nutrition for mothers offers a striking example of how brands can address specific consumer needs and aspirations. Ask Nestle provided personalized nutrition plans to cater to individual preferences and regional dietary habits. This involved creating a content machinery that delivers scientifically accurate and cost-effective information. Lakme: Reviving the Essence of Seductive Beauty Revitalizing a brand's essence required a multi-pronged approach encompassing fundamental improvements, effective training, and compelling communication. This involved strengthening the brand's foundation by training beauty advisors and enhancing product knowledge. It also meant reinventing packaging and crafting impactful communication to resonate with consumers' emotions.
