In this episode, Matt talks with Jerome Van Kuiken about his new book The Judas We Never Knew. Everyone is familiar with Judas in the New Testament, namely, the disciple who betrayed Jesus. But there's another Judas who many might not be familiar with at all. This Judas wrote a little book that can be found near the end of the New Testament -- the book of Jude. It's a rather short letter, and if you blink, you'll miss it altogether. Who was this Judas? What message would he have for today's world? Despite the small size of his book, it really does pack a lot of punch. Listeners will enjoy this fascinating discussion about all things Judas. And... there's even some talk about Spiderman thrown in as well. Buy Jerome's book: The Judas We Never Knew (Amazon) // Publisher (Seedbed) page About Jerome (from OKWU bio): Dr. Jerome Van Kuiken earned his B.A. in Religion from Kentucky Mountain Bible College, his Master of Divinity from Wesley Biblical Seminary in Mississipi, and his Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Manchester in England. This week's guest is Stephanie, a Deconversion Anonymous group member. Stephanie grew up in the Assemblies of God church as a Missionary Kid for most of her childhood. Her younger years held all the trappings of white American evangelicalism, from conservative Christian school curricula to a paralyzing fear of going to hell forever.“The ‘hell belief'? It's a sticky one.”Stephanie's beliefs, however, had been set on precarious foundations: Christians are good and everyone else is bad; the Bible is true and inerrant; the Earth may look old, but it is only thousands of years old. Stephanie made friends outside the church as a young adult, and these new relationships plus great documentaries and books cracked open the bedrocks of her faith. It's been a long time since she deconverted, and she is living a life she loves by loving others without reservation. Our guest today is Mary Antony. She's a wife, mom of 3 daughters, and is passionate about sharing the truths of our identity in Christ with others. Mary grew up as a missionary kid in Mumbai, India. It was really hard for her family to live out their faith in a culture that equated spiritual blessing with physical blessing. Because her family was not materially affluent, Mary doubted God's love and presence in her life, and she came to believe lies about God and herself. While she kept up the appearance of being a good missionary kid, she became skeptical of living a life surrendered to God. Mary was determined to take control of her own life. She didn't want anyone telling her what to do, and she definitely didn't want to follow a God that seemed like He didn't love her. Eventually, Mary found success in the modeling industry, but it wasn't long before this left her feeling empty inside. Then, one night, her life was forever changed when she opened up her Bible for the first time in years. Unbeknown to Mary, her mom had been on a 21-day water fast for her salvation after her mom took hold of her own identity and freedom in Christ through reading Neil Anderson's books. On this episode, Mary shares about her powerful salvation story, how Freedom in Christ transformed her entire family, and why she believes every Christian needs to know their identity in Christ and understand spiritual warfare. Today's conversation is with Brian Gay, the Missions Pastor at First Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Brian has been the Missions Pastor there for more than 15 years. But before that, he was a missionary kid, serving alongside his parents in Ecuador and Mexico.Want to learn how your church can partner with OneChild to bring HOPE to kids living in hard Places? Click Here!Brian stresses that we have to keep the kids of missionaries in mind when we pray and minister to them. When missionaries your church supports are spending extended time here in the US, remember that their kids are here too. Find ways to include them in the life of your church if possible. Help them develop friendships here. Do whatever you can to make them feel supported, not just their parents. Second, Brian has seen firsthand - from both sides of the relationship - the power of strong ministry partnerships. And more often than not, when our the people in our churches engage deeply with these missions partners, it changes them as much or more than those they minister to.  And finally, Brian reminds us that getting a missions ministry started in your church doesn't have to be complicated. Pick a specific people group. Begin praying for them and learning about them. And God will open doors. And then remember, you don't have to go it alone. Your church denomination or network probably has some great resources to help you get started. Another tool is connecting with an organization like OneChild to help you begin to engage with churches serving kids living in hard placesLearn more about First Baptist Church, MontgomeryLearn more about OneChild HERE!

Eric is Associate Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and he also directs the PhD. in Theological Studies. He completed his MDiv. at TEDS and also holds a BA from Moody Bible Institute and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.Eric begins with a recounting of his childhood in the mission field in central Africa, a time during which he grew to appreciate the spiritual benefits of the Old Testament. From that point onward, he was committed to helping the church understand it well. This leads into a discussion of Eric's course on the “Book of the Twelve,” commonly known as the “Minor Prophets,” and the most coherent reasons we have for reading them as a unified set of texts. There is also an insightful conversation about the eschatological vision of the prophets, and how one's relation to God determines where one stands in relation to such a vision. Eric also expatiates on the importance of focusing on the Hebrew text for interpretation, both in his work in Hosea and in his co-taught course on the Psalms with Dr. David Luy. Finally, Eric shares his wisdom about the benefits of getting a PhD., especially the kinds of intellectual virtues one is able to cultivate through the process.Along the way, listeners will discover… Who shot first, Han or Greedo, and why?Eric's favorite drink. What the prophets uniquely contribute to what we know about God, and what we'd lose without them.To learn more about Dr. Eric Tully, visit his faculty page, or explore one of his many books, whether his Hosea commentary, his introduction to textual criticism, or his forthcoming work on the prophets, due March 2022. Wendy grew up in a conservative right-winged home with an Evangelical Christian mother and Atheist father. The church she attended with her mother and brother was a Missionary Church.Wendy's life included submission, obedience and following rules, with guilt and shame as an integral part of her mindset. After attending a 1-room church school for 7 years (A.C.E. – Accelerated Christian Education curriculum), she was able to attend a more “normal” Christian school for the rest of her high school. Wendy went on several overseas short-term mission trips in high school. This further cemented her goal of being a career missionary. She met her 1st husband (who was a Missionary Kid from Papua New Guinea) at Prairie Bible College. After they were married, they pursued their missionary career in Brazil. They had 3 kids and were part of the mission for 15 years. After many difficult events and challenges, Wendy’s first marriage ended. This was around the same time she started to question her conservative Christian beliefs. She left her marriage, left the church, started a new career and rebounded into a 2nd marriage all around the age of 40. The 2nd marriage involved blending 2 families. That turned out to be very stressful with crisis after crisis. That marriage ended after 8 years, in 2018. Back in 2017, Wendy started the Women Beyond Belief podcast and interviewed over 35 women. These women shared their harrowing stories of leaving religion. During that year, the #MeToo movement became mainstream. This created some difficult issues which Wendy found too challenging and stressful to deal with. Wendy tried to rebrand the podcast under the Just Us Women title but finally decided to end the podcast. Wendy passed me the torch and I continue the tradition of creating space for women who have left religion to share their stories. Today, Wendy is trying to find her way on her own as a single-income household with her youngest still at home. She is learning to find romance and fun again through online dating. You can listen to many of the archive episodes of the Women Beyond Belief and Just Us Women podcasts. Living in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War in the early 1990’s, Ahnna found her identity as a Korean missionary’s kid, who was thrilled by the threat of persecution and worshiping in secret. When the social unrest became too much, her family fled to rural Arkansas where her identity then became that of the only non-white and non-English speaking person in her small town of 3,000. Ahnna persevered through cultural differences and language barriers in Arkansas, only to find her identity in question again when her family moved to Denver, Colorado as a young teen. Her identity in Christ was challenged daily in school by both teachers and students, only to be met at home with the conflict of her Korean-American identity that was forming. Through the most intense spiritual warfare, Ahnna’s identities and her idol of accomplishment were stripped away and she almost succumbed to death until God showed her that she was His.  As Ahnna continues to make sense of her calling as a wife, mother and newly ordained pastor her identity as a daughter of the Most High has equipped her through the additional challenges of her husband’s stroke, giving birth alone and finishing seminary. Although the theme of her life thus far has been one of navigating new worlds that held no similarity, the one constant was God who is capable of taking care of us, saving us, showing us who we truly are and not letting any experience go to waste. This episode is a about saying "goodbye," but it's also about how we stay in touch. I talk to my nine year old daughter about what it was like moving to a new country and how she stays in touch with her friends. We also discuss how she identifies herself as a sort of unassuming third culture kid. Then we hear from my parents who lived in the Philippines for a year back in the 70's. They talk about their life under martial law, their naive explorations around the country, and how they attempted to communicate with family back home in an age preceding internet and smart phones. Lastly, we hear from Joanna, a self-proclaimed "Missionary Kid," who has grown up in Cambodia. Still in high school herself, she reflects on life as a third culture Australian kid in Cambodia. Of her experiences, she says,"...I'm getting tired of being left behind; of seeing people go, and then seeing people come, and having to be the one that's okay..." Joanna shares her poem, "Ends Again." Giving another meaning to the episode title, "Don't Forget To Write," we refer to Joanna's mission to one day use her writing to "awake the emotions," of people who wouldn't otherwise be moved to help those who don't have voices themselves. http://hiraethmagazine.com/podcast-episode-6-dont-forget-to-write/ This episode features music by Ketsa (copyright) http://ketsamusic.com/ using a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 License
