How MySpace Changed Music - (Interview with Author, Michael Tedder)

Join us as we delve into the fascinating world of MySpace Music with Michael Tedder, author of "Top Eight: How MySpace Changed Music." In this enlightening interview, targeted at indie record label owners, music industry professionals, and indie artists, we explore the rise and impact of MySpace Music, a platform that revolutionized the way musicians connect with fans and industry alike.   PRESENTED BY AtoZ Media (http://atozmedia.com)   We kick off our conversation with a curious inquiry about Tom, the iconic face of MySpace, and where he is today. From there, we embark on a journey through the history of social media, from the forgotten pioneer Friendster to the emergence of Facebook and the unique space occupied by MySpace.   Tedder sheds light on the decision to allow uploads of original music on MySpace, revealing the platform's role as a precursor to modern-day social media platforms like Facebook and Bandcamp. We discuss how MySpace provided indie artists with unprecedented direct-to-fan opportunities and served as a pioneering platform for A&R reps to discover new talent.   But was it really as easy as it seemed to land a major deal through MySpace? Tedder addresses this question, along with inquiries about the platform's algorithm, the preservation of MySpace in people's memories, and its eventual sale to News Corp in 2011.   From the parallels between social media evolution and the rise of mp3 sharing sites to the connections between MySpace and piracy, Tedder paints a comprehensive picture of MySpace's impact on the music industry. And let's not forget the intriguing Justin Timberlake connection and the enduring value of the MySpace brand today.   As we wrap up our conversation, we ponder the possibility of a MySpace reboot, tapping into the nostalgia of the '80s and '90s and exploring the potential for MySpace to make a comeback in today's ever-evolving digital landscape.   Tune in to gain insights into one of the most iconic platforms in music history and discover how MySpace changed the game for indie artists and industry professionals alike.   Grab a copy of "Top Eight: How MySpace Changed Music" - http://geni.us/topeight

The discography of Mux Mool may as well be a genre unto itself. Although something of an unsung hero, he's spent the last two decades formulating a sound that has influenced an entire generation of producers.        Mux Mool's fusion between hip-hop and electronic music exhibits an elusive cohesion of concept. His discography as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts, championed by entities including Ghostly International, Pretty Lights Music and Adult Swim.        Mux Mool is a living, breathing, eccentric artist stereotype. Born Brian Lindgren in St. Paul, Minnesota to a folk singer mother and painter father, he resonated with video game music more than anything he heard on the radio as a child. In high school he discovered electronic music acts like Chemical Brothers and Sasha & Digweed.        In 1998, he started producing music but waited until 2006 to release his first track "Lost and Found" which was named one of iTunes 'Best Electronic Songs' of that year alongside Flying Lotus & Justice. It also gained enough traction on MySpace Music to prompt none other than Bassnectar to request the stems to one of his songs. More importantly, it landed him on the radar of Moodgadget A&R.        In 2009 Mux Mool toured throughout the United States and in 2010 he released his first studio-length album, "Skulltaste" on Ghostly International. A song from the effort titled “Get Better John” remains his most successful track to date, garnering 2.5 million plays on Spotify.   From 2010 to 2011 he added tour dates alongside Bassnectar, Break Science and Lotus to his résumé. He then followed up his first release with the album "Planet High School" in 2012 and "Appetite for Production" in 2014.   More recently, Mux Mool has collaborated and performed with Derek Vincent Smith A.K.A. Pretty Lights.  In addition, he and fellow producer Michael Menert went on to launch Super Best Records, signing acts including Krooked Drivers (now Maddy O'Neal) and Late Night Radio.   Mux Mool's newest album Skulltaste II dropped on July 10th, 2020. In this episode, we really do our best to just manically jump from topic to topic, (*surprise, surprise!) ranging from things like Salt Lamps, Video Production, and a bit of Nostalgia; namely the newly released Playstation 4 remasters of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 and 2. We go on to get a bit deeper talking about what causes stress, anxiety, and depression and tricks to help train your mind to push them away. We then move on to self-help books and methodologies in general and touch on cults such as Heaven's Gate and NXIVM with its new documentary on HBO. This somehow ends up flowing ever so naturally into a story about a long lost band from Gene's youth and his search to find another copy only to find a very sad ending. And as always we end up talking a lot about Religions and Beliefs, which brings us to a discussion on the fascinating origins of Scientology and it's origins with "Dianetics" as we know it, as well as the highly prolific and vast bibliography of L. Ron Hubbard who could quite literally write an entire sci-fi novel IN ONE DAY. WHO CAN DO THAT!?

Dmitry Shapiro is the co-founder & CEO of GoMeta, which provides users with Koji, a platform that aims to democratize app development. Similarly to how blogs democratized text publishing, and Instagram democratizing photography, the GoMeta team believes that the general public are at a point where they are ready to get familiar with, and create things from, code. The Russia native moved to Atlanta, GA when he was just 10 years old. In 1984, during his teen years, Dmitry watched a movie called WarGames that immediately drew him to computers, and so, he began spending his free time at his high school’s computer lab. Soon enough, Dmitry went from being a rookie to learning how to program. His parents eventually got him a computer so that he could learn skills from the comfort of his own home.  Although his activity during his teen years would suggest a future career in computer science, Dmitry decided to spend his college years studying electrical engineering instead. After graduating with a degree he was burnt out from, Dmitry explored other career paths until rediscovering programming at 25. This caused him to shift gears and find work as a Sales Engineer and later on as a web consultant. After a few years, Dmitry was recruited by an up-and-coming San Diego company called College Club, spending just under a year there. After the company tanked, DMitry decided to begin his own venture. He founded Akonix Systems, a startup that sought to build online communities for individual brands, and raised his first round of venture capital, totalling $5 million, after about a year. Although the business was doing well, Dmitry and his co-founder decided pivoting the business to a cybersecurity company would be best.  With an eventual $34 million in venture capital raised, the future of the cybersecurity venture looked promising. In late 2004, five years into his venture, Dmitry had an epiphany: he wanted to make it easy for anyone to broadcast video on the internet. An idea he came up with several months before the launch of YouTube. He felt so strongly about his idea that he ended up leaving Akonix shortly after to pursue this new venture, Veoh Networks. In the five years he pursued this new venture, Dmitry’s team raised $70 million, competing directly with YouTube and Hulu. Nearing the end of its five-year run, the company was being bombarded with lawsuits from Universal Music, leading to its subsequent liquidation. After closing down his company, Dmitry was recruited by MySpace to become the next CTO of its subsidiary, MySpace Music, where he worked for one year before leaving to become a Googler. Four years later, Dmitry left his gig at Google and moved back down to sunny San Diego, where he started working on his current venture: GoMeta.   Listen in to hear all about Dmitry’s journey as an entrepreneur, his plans for the future of GoMeta, and his local favorite eats and brews. Rockers Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have just released their third album together. "Under The Covers Vol.3" is their third album of covers that the duo put together from the songbooks of other artists that they both feel passionate about. Susanna returned to The Time Machine Radio Show last week to share the latest batch of songs. The gifted artist discussed the inspiration behind some of the songs off of the new album. She also discussed with The Time Machine's radio show host, Michael McCartney, the previous two albums from the duo known affectionately as Sid 'n' Susie (Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs), as well as her 2012 album "Someday", which became the most played album on the air for The Time Machine out of all of the records released in 2012. If you're not familiar with the album series that Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have been recording and releasing, what you essentially need to know is that the first album covered sixties material (with the exception of the early seventies classic Bee Gees song "Run To Me"). The second album "Under The Covers Vol. 2" dove into the seventies and this latest album naturally dips into the eighties. Dips may not be the correct choice of wording. This new album plunges into the eighties and both Matthew and Susanna's song choices are so inspired that this collection of songs are a must have for your music collection. Susanna is a core artist of The Time Machine's radio format going back to the eighties with her fellow band mates Vicki Peterson, Debbi Peterson and Michael Steele of The Bangles. The band, along with The Traveling Wilburys, were the most played act on The Time Machine and helped define a sound for the radio broadcast that embraced a sixties musical sensibility with the modern music scene of the time. All four albums from The Bangles in the eighties solidified their status as radio core artists on The Time Machine and their return in 2003 with "Doll Revolution" was welcomed with open arms. The domination of that album's airplay was so strong that it became the most played album of the decade followed by Rachael Yamagata's debut album "Happenstance", "Not Ready To Make Nice" by The Dixie Chicks, Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising", Alice Peacock's self titled sophomore album, "Come Away With Me" by Norah Jones, John Mayer's "Room For Squares", "Mondo Magneto" by Brian Ray, "Lurch" from Mike Viola, "Brainwashed" by George Harrison, Nushu's "Nevermind Lullabye" and Rilo Kiley's "More Adventurous". Susanna found this old flyer to share for a June 13th, 1981 performance of The Colours, before the band became The Bangles, in the basement of the Echo Park Methodist Church Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include The Bangles, Rachael Yamagata and Ronnie Spector.
