Robert Frost's poem Nothing Gold Can Stay challenges us to consider what is permanent and what is not in life. Jan shares his recent personal experience with the new musical The Outsiders on Broadway and how a character's dying words quoting Frost illuminate the ongoing power of finding what truly matters.
What defines a golden age? Google, that most invaluable of sources, defines it as "an idyllic, often imaginary past time of peace, prosperity, and happiness." But the period of time we're discussing today was anything BUT imaginary. Scientific achievements, religious tolerance, and some of the greatest works or art ever created are just some of the things for which this era was known. Find out how it all came about in this week's episode! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historylovescompany/support

Chapter 1:Summary of Book The outsiders"The Outsiders" is a coming-of-age novel by S.E. Hinton, first published in 1967. The story is set in a small town in the United States in the 1960s and revolves around the intense conflict between two groups: the Greasers and the Socs (short for Socials). The Greasers are from the lower socio-economic class, often characterized by their long, greased hair, while the Socs are from the wealthier class and have a much more privileged upbringing. The novel is narrated by Ponyboy Curtis, a 14-year-old Greaser with a gift for storytelling. Ponyboy lives with his two older brothers, Sodapop and Darry, who are taking care of him after their parents died in a car accident. Despite tough circumstances, the brothers share a close bond. The plot kicks off when Ponyboy and his friend Johnny Cade, another Greaser, are attacked by a group of Socs. The confrontation ends in tragedy when Johnny kills one of the Socs, Bob Sheldon, in self-defense. Fearing the consequences, Ponyboy and Johnny flee and hide out in an abandoned church with the help of their friend and fellow Greaser, Dallas Winston. As they hide from the police, Ponyboy and Johnny bond and discuss deeper topics, such as life, their families, and their future. However, their hideout eventually catches fire while a group of schoolchildren is visiting. Ponyboy and Johnny heroically save the children but Johnny is seriously injured during the rescue. The event garners media attention, and the Greasers and Socs become even more entrenched in their conflict. Meanwhile, Johnny's condition worsens, and he dies in the hospital. Distraught, Dallas reacts impulsively and meets a tragic end after a confrontation with the police. The novel culminates with Ponyboy reflecting on the events and writing his school assignment about them, concluding with the realization that despite class differences, pain and suffering are universal—echoing his reading of Robert Frost's poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay," and the recurrent theme that life's precious moments are fleeting."The Outsiders" is a poignant exploration of friendship, societal expectations, family, and identity, appealing to young readers with its candid portrayal of teenage struggles in the face of socio-economic divides.Chapter 2:The Theme of Book The outsiders"The Outsiders," written by S.E. Hinton and published in 1967, is a novel about teenage gangs and the conflicts between them. Set in a small town in the 1960s, it focuses on the struggles between two rival groups, the Greasers and the Socs, who are differentiated by their socioeconomic statuses.Key Plot Points:1. Introduction to Conflict:The story opens by introducing Ponyboy Curtis, a 14-year-old Greaser, who is jumped by a group of Socs as he's walking home from a movie theater. This sets the scene for the ongoing rivalry and social conflict.2. The Drive-In Movie:Ponyboy, along with his brothers Darrel (Darry) and Sodapop, and friends Johnny and Two-Bit, meet Cherry Valance and Marcia at a drive-in movie. Despite being Socs, Cherry and Ponyboy develop a mutual understanding and discuss their differences and similarities, bridging the gap between their social classes momentarily.3. Johnny Kills Bob:The conflict escalates when Johnny, in self-defense, kills Bob Sheldon (a Soc) after he and his friends try to drown Ponyboy in a park. Fearful of the consequences, Johnny and Ponyboy flee to a church hideout in a nearby town with the help of their friend Dallas (Dally) Winston. 4. The Church Fire:While in hiding, a fire breaks out in the church Johnny and Ponyboy are in, and they heroically save a group of children trapped inside. Both get injured, and their act of bravery receives media coverage, altering the public's perception of the Greasers.5. The Rumble:After returning...
Just when you thought the wave of celebrity deaths was over, we got hit with another one. Everyone's favorite football star, OJ Simpson, has died. He was known for his skill as a running back, his acting, and absolutely nothing else. We'd cope by eating a lot of candy, but Minnesota's Largest Candy Store is moving and we're still six months away from Halloween. April truly is the cruelest month. Learn more about your ad choices. Looking much better in week 2 of Worlds Groups, 100 Thieves' invigorated performance still ultimately fell short of getting to Worlds Quarterfinals after a very close loss to RNG and Gen.G's destruction of a corpse shortly afterwards. The boys finished their 2022 year as members of the Western 1-5 Club, but without much else to smile about. Despite the underperformance being overshadowed by NA's general impotence on the international stage, 100T quickly reclaimed the headlines by announcing the departure of beloved GM PapaSmithy, whose Twitter statement left a few things to dissect. The 100Talk dads are here to do just that. In this episode, Cole and Jordan dedicate the pod to evaluating the PapaSmithy tenure. Checking performance against goals, the dads give their takes on the reasons for the breakup and what its implications are within 100 Thieves as an organization and for the LCS as a whole. They speculate on the future of the program and lay out the limited options in front of us, while paying tribute to both the players (who may soon be leaving) and the staff that made this wonderful 3-split run possible. It is the most bittersweet of 100Talk episodes.

"Daisy Time," by Marjorie Pickthall is a sweet, airy poem for Spring time. "To Daffodils," by Robert Herrick, as though to countermand the declarations from our first poet this week, Herrick reminds us, like Robert Frost in "Nothing Gold Can Stay," that beauty is transitory, and our lives, like the beautiful flowers, have but a short time to bloom. Robert Frost's poem evokes the transitory nature of the things we love. As we gather to mark the coming observance of All Souls' Day (which will occur on Tuesday, November 2), we pause to remember those who have passed, and to honor the beauty and magic of their lives. We will share poems and readings, and speak the names of those who have passed from this life but are still in our hearts. This poem is one of my moms favorites. I like it too because it is short and rhymes. It is about how beautiful things stay only for a short time.
Silence is like a canvas for sound to glide across, and no one shows this better than Robert Frost's dark, moody prose where wind calls to window flowers, dead leaves creep along the forest floor amongst graves. Eventually we end up where death has pressed his cold fingers, and a couple have a difficult conversation about grief and the death of their firstborn. Finally, we land back in the darkest hour in a quiet forest, where Frost infamously reminds us about promises to keep. Frost's poems are placed in order for a specific, theatrical affect. No conviction makes so lasting an impression on the mind as that which it works out for itself. But I shall endeavor nevertheless to put the reader on the right road. –Frederic Bastiat A great writer named William Voegeli has penned a smashing piece about the left's use of "whataboutism" as a defense for their indefensible indifference to leftist riots this past summer. If you only read one column a month, read this one. Robert Frost once wrote a poem called "Nothing Gold Can Stay" and it's very pretty. https://www.city-journal.org/about-whataboutism-and-political-hypocrisy#.X__UDc0YQtY.twitter https://poets.org/poem/nothing-gold-can-stay
Picture a walk in the woods at this time of the year. Noticing the leaves that have fallen from the trees above. In the quiet of the morning, I consider the sound of the leaves gracing the grounds a song to greet the day. Like colorful chimes releasing kisses to make the walk quite the pleasure. I have to catch myself as I lift my head to receive each and every one. To read my reflections on the kaleidoscope of color, click here. Rob Cardillo - Photographer Extraordinaire. After 18 years of ownership, Brad says goodbye to his beloved Honda Civic, Golden Boy. When it comes to car ownership, ChooseFI often talks about only buying a new car every 15 years. Over a 45 year adult lifetime, the savings, when invested, can amount to almost $750,000 when compared to someone who leases or just manages a constant car payment. Although Brad wanted to keep the car, it had been having some mechanical issues and his family was no longer comfortable riding in it anymore. The impact it was having on Brad's family was not worth it. For his next vehicle, Brad opted for a 2013 Honda Civic rather than a brand new car. He purchased his new Civic through Caravana, the car vending machine business, who was selling Civics for roughly $3,000 less than CarMax. The buying process through Caravan was quick and streamlined. The car was delivered to his home and he spent approximately one-hour signing paperwork and finalizing documents. There are sweet spots when purchasing used vehicles. Although Brad's car is seven years old, after five years, cars have generally already depreciated at the fastest rate. If you are going to buy new, keep it forever. If you buy used, target 5-7 years old. Listener Oscar wrote into the show asking about Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) which hasn't been something that ChooseFI has discussed much in previous episodes. A HELOC is a revolving line of credit on your home where the equity you have in your home is used to secure it. For instance, a home worth $300,000 with a mortgage balance of $100,000 has $200,000 worth of equity. A HELOC allows homeowners to tap into the equity locked up in their homes. An advantage of using a home equity loan over other options for access to cash, like credit cards, is that the interest rate is often much lower, although it is a variable rate and can change. The interest rate on a HELOC may be in the 3-5% range versus 15-30% with credit cards. For homeowners who placed a sizable down payment on their home, whose home has appreciated, made extra payments, etc., a HELOC becomes a potential source of low-interest revolving credit. A HELOC is different from a home equity loan in that with a loan, the loan amount is deposited into your bank account and interest begins accruing immediately. A HELOC provides you with the ability to tap into the equity at any time, such as in the case of an emergency. No interest accrues until you decide to access the money. It gives you options if ever needed. Occasionally, HELOCs can be had for no closing costs. Considering that the process to apply and be approved for a HELOC can take weeks, it can be useful to have one in place so that it is already available if and when it is needed. Frequent guest and friend of ChooseFI, Big ERN, does not have an emergency fund. He believes that there is an opportunity cost to keeping 6 months of expenses in a liquid account that is likely earning every little in interest. In a thought experiment, he tried to envision a true emergency that he could not cover with credit cards or a HELOC. Those working to build an emergency fund before beginning to invest are potentially missing out on higher interest rates earned from investments. They might be better off investing their savings and using money from a HELOC to cover monthly expenses in an emergency rather than selling off investments or using high-interest credit cards. Jonathan mentioned that there are schemes to paying off a mortgage early using HELOCs and credit cards that people can learn about for a fee. Brad doesn't doubt that these might work, but it's too complex. There's no insider knowledge worth paying for. He doesn't believe these methods are any more beneficial than making additional principal payments to a traditional mortgage. Rather than a HELOC, Jonathan uses a margin loan through M1 Finance for a line of credit. He can borrow up to 40% of his invested assets with an interest rate of 2.75-3.5% and have the money in his account in minutes. Margin loans on investment accounts are lines of credit options for renters. Listener Alex wrote in with his win with a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) and Health Savings Account (HSA). Listener Rachel wrote in saying that she has reached FI and didn't even know it. As a result, she was able to leave a toxic work environment in the middle of a pandemic and spend more time with her nice and nephew. Today's Writing into the Day podcast will be featuring a poem by Robert Frost, “Nothing Gold Can Stay.” As I read this poem, I want you to think about change. With all the recent turmoil surrounding the COVID 19 cases in the world, how has your life changed? How does this make you feel? Is there a beauty tied to temporary circumstances? Think about where you look for the silver linings or where you try to be positive about the challenges in your life. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/writingintotheday/support
Alanna talks with avid, lifelong readers Aviva Dunsiger and Ramona Meharg about books that greatly influenced them as Aviva and Ramona were also coming-of-age. Ramona explains how reading The Outsiders taught her a lot about the power of loyalty for making friends feel like family. Aviva reflects about how Judy Blume may have formed her later choice of women's studies in university and how it really is an artifact of the 70s. Read Into This celebrates our very first poem recitation as Ramona performs Robert Frost's “Nothing Gold Can Stay”.Shoutouts to Beverly Cleary, Jean Little, Tiger Beat, C.Thomas Howell and Patrick Swayze.

This week on StoryWeb: Robert Frost’s poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” In honor of the winter solstice Without a doubt, the most famous poem about winter is Robert Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” In fact, Garrison Keillor says that this is perhaps the single most famous poem of any kind in the twentieth century. Frost himself called the poem “my best bid for remembrance.” Written nearly in the blink of an eye in June 1922 after Frost had been up all night finishing his long poem “New Hampshire,” the poem, said Frost, came to him nearly in an hallucination in just “a few minutes without strain.” It was published the next year in a collection of Frost poems also titled New Hampshire. It’s likely that you know this beloved poem – and also that you know other Frost poems, such as “After Apple-Picking,” “Birches,” “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” and of course “The Road Not Taken.” The thing about Frost’s poems is that they seem, at first glance, to be so simple, so straightforward. In “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” the poem’s speaker is returning home from an errand of some sort on the “darkest evening of the year,” that is, the winter solstice. He and his horse stop by a wood filling with snow. The horse is impatient to get home, but the man is entranced by the snow piling up in the woods, “lovely, dark and deep.” Anyone who has witnessed a deep snow knows the muffled quiet, the hush that descends as the “downy flake[s]” fall, that magical feeling of being transported almost to another world. Since I live in Colorado, I get to enjoy many such snowfalls each year, and I often say it is like being in a snow globe. But “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” is not just about being in a snow globe in New Hampshire, lovely as that image is. No, anyone who’s read the work of Robert Frost knows that there’s usually more going on in a Frost poem than at first meets the eye. Here, we can’t help but be intrigued by the lines at the poem’s end: “The woods are lovely, dark and deep, / But I have promises to keep, / And miles to go before I sleep, / And miles to go before I sleep.” Perhaps these lines are literally about a busy man who needs to attend to his obligations and not tarry too long in this transcendent landscape. And maybe he is thinking prosaically about the long journey still ahead toward home. But many readers have sensed that there is more at work here. Drawn into the otherworldliness of the dark woods filling up with snow, the speaker may be thinking on another level of the “sweet” relief that death may bring. Like sleep, death is a mystery, an unknowing, potentially a kind of oblivion that seems in some ways attractive to someone, like the poem’s speaker, who is too busy with obligations and errands. Might it be nice to simply succumb to these woods, “lovely, dark and deep” as they are? Then again, maybe this is just a slice-of-life nature poem about appreciating a supremely beautiful winter landscape. A former colleague of mine from my days teaching at West Virginia’s Shepherd University emphatically told students that the poem is not about death as it does not explicitly mention this subject. For that professor, the poem is literally about the narrator needing to get home so he can sleep. But this professor also told students that any given poem has only one meaning and that it is the teacher’s job to ensure that students understand each poem’s single interpretation. I am in a far different camp, as I believe that a rich poem can have multiple interpretations, maybe even contradictory meanings at the same time, that readers bring to the poem their own lives and experiences and that each reader has a unique experience of the poem. I ascribe to Archibald MacLeish’s philosophy: “A poem should not mean but be.” To sample a few of the many interpretations Frost’s poem has elicited, visit the University of Illinois’s outstanding Modern American Poetry website, where you’ll find excerpts from a dozen or so scholars. One critic included here, Clint Stevens, writes, “There is in the end the uncertainty in choosing between his death impulse and his desire to continue on the road of life. Which wins in the end, I think I know, but it scarcely matters; the speaker has had his solitary vision; whether he stays or goes, the woods will go with him and the reader, who are now well-acquainted with the coming night.” Well said, Mr. Stevens. Well said. To learn more about Frost, you might want to read the Poetry Foundation’s introduction to Frost’s work and philosophy. If you really want to delve into everything Frost, read Jay Parini’s outstanding biography, Robert Frost: A Life – and check out the Robert Frost postage stamp (along with other U.S. stamps dedicated to American poets!). The definitive collection of Frost’s poetry is The Poetry of Robert Frost. Visit thestoryweb.com/snowy for links to all these resources and to watch Frost recite this marvelous poem. At the very least, hearing him read the words will transport you to a magical, snowy world. And it just might cause you to reflect on the power of life – and death – beyond yourself. And the next time you are lucky enough to enjoy a lovely, deep snowfall, think of Frost’s poems. Happy winter, happy return of the light to all my StoryWeb listeners.
