We're discussing loan entities' challenges when navigating the charter school scene, particularly in single-site charter schools. Charter schools are publicly funded schools that operate independently of traditional public schools. They are granted greater autonomy in exchange for increased accountability for student achievement. Charter schools are often seen as a way to provide families with more educational options and to promote innovation in education. One type of charter school is the single-site charter school, which operates a single school site rather than a network of schools. While single-site charter schools can effectively provide education in specific communities, they can also present unique challenges for lone entities.

In 1963, Alabama native Naomi Shelton came to Brooklyn as part of The Great Migration of African-Americans out of the South, and she brought along her deep affection for gospel and soul music. Shelton had grown up singing in churches in her hometown of Midway, and she continued singing in church when she arrived in New York. But she also began to perform in Brooklyn nightclubs under the name Naomi Davis, marrying secular and spiritual themes, and channeling social issues, real-life struggles, and personal joys.  Fast forward to 1999, when Shelton and an old friend and collaborator Cliff Driver formed a gospel group that caught attention of Gabriel Roth -- who at the time was running the label Desco. Roth would soon go on to co-found Daptone Records, and Shelton was among the first to sign up. She's been a steady presence at the label since, starting with her Daptone debut full-length, 2009's What Have You Done, My Brother?. Five years later, Shelton was back with her follow-up, Cold World, another fine collection of gritty grooves and commanding vocals that recalls both her Daptone labelmate, Sharon Jones, and R&B-infused rock bands like Alabama Shakes. Produced by Roth, Cold World toggles through a variety of moods, while Shelton sings passionately about the human condition and personal burdens. This is music for the spirit -- and for the feet. (This 2014 in-studio performance is from the Archives.) Set List: "Sinner," "It's A Cold, Cold World,""I Don't Know"

Use our code LOVE to get a discount on your order!!! About Naomi Shelton Naomi is the Director of Community Engagement at KIPP Foundation, a nonprofit that provides tools, resources, and training across all public schools and organizations. Previously, she was the Director of K-12 Advocacy at UNCF (United Negro College Fund), the nation's largest and most effective minority education organization. There, she focused on national education initiatives and community engagement efforts to ensure more African-American students are college and career ready. Ms. Shelton also spent several years working in Washington, DC's Executive Office of the Mayor and in several District agencies. She spearheaded efforts to improve online access to city services and greater efficiency between departments. A life-long resident of Washington, DC, Ms. Shelton also worked in the private sector, providing project and crisis management, and public relations counsel. About Lorenza Wine TWELVE YEARS AGO… Lorenza Rosé was founded in 2008 by Melinda Kearney, a wine industry veteran from Napa Valley and her daughter Michele Lorenza Ouellet, an international fashion model. Sharing a love of the beautiful Provençal Rosé, they set out to create in California a wine of intention that was vineyard driven, delicate, dry, low alcohol and full of light. In 2008 they hit the road, destination Lodi with a phone number of someone they hadn't yet met. Old vines they believed would lend the wine complexity and authenticity and would feed their desire to create a wine of substance–something real. Strangers became friends and doors generously opened to the outstanding vineyards that have been the source of Lorenza True Rosé. The sandy soil of the California Delta is home to the old vineyards that provide the grapes from which Lorenza is made. The Bechthold Vineyard Cinsaut was planted in 1847. Spenker Ranch, the original source of Carignan was planted in 1906. Head trained, own rooted vines, weathered and with stories to tell, these vines are central to the blend which was inspired by the Bandol icon, Domaine Tempier. Hand picked, direct to press with fermentation in separate stainless steel tanks allows the individual lots to develop and express their beauty fully before the final blending. The first vintages caught the attention of sommeliers who were looking for an American-made, Provence-style Rosé. The wine continues to deliver a consistent flavor profile with a sun-kissed mineral driven palate, 11% alcohol and pale hue. https://www.lorenzawine.com/purchase --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/support

The owners of the Por Vida Café, Carolina and Mylo, also stop in to discuss what the Barrio Logan business corridor means for their families. Carolina and Mylo are true inspirations for activists and young entrepreneurs. As Carolina said, “the time is always now.” Collazo, Porras and Leon share what this unique moment in San Diego should teach all of us about the power of podcasting and the legacy of Erik Estrada. Support Margo Porras in all of her endeavors. She was an incredible host for us in San Diego and has many worthy projects including her podcast “Books Vs. Movies” and her new book “Growing Up In La Colonia.” And if you are ever in San Diego, support “Por Vida Café” in Barrio Logan. A true home away from home. Listen for Part II of this special episode featuring James Garcia, Naomi Shelton and Nissim Leon.

Daptone Records is a funk and soul indie record label based in Brooklyn, New York, most well known for their work with Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Charles Bradley. The label was founded in 2001 by Bosco Mann and Neal Sugarman, who built their studio called Daptone's House of Soul in a converted two-family home in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. They decided not to use any digital programming and instead relied on old fashioned analog recording methods, including good old studio acoustics, which thus created the very distinctive sound of Daptone Records. Mojo's, Mata Hari's & Muckity Mucks......This weeks episode culminating from the shotgun wedding of my record collection and your computer is titled MOJO'S, MATA HARI'S & MUCKITY MUCKS....aptly named as we're starting with Little Esther Phillips from 1964 on the Atlantic records label..."Mojo Hannah"...smooth as silk was Lil Esther...she got her start with Johnny Otis in the early 50's, hooked up with Mel Walker who introduced Esther to the blues, bourbon and heroin......ahem.....in the words of my old buddy Johnny "Jersey to Mersey" Bodnar, we "con-tin-ooh on" with Ray Davies favorite band The Woggles who nail a 3 pointer over the head of Kevin Garnett before he can complain to the ref who's diggin' Dick Dale plunkin' his piano wire geetar strings offa an early offering from the surfguitargod hisself...."Jungle Fever" a favorite here in the Jungle Studios....I've seen SzQ get on her desk and frug out to this slab of 7" magic!! Speaking of magic.....lounge lizard, Claude Bolling slam dunks the 1st set of music with "Strange Magic".As stated in the opening....we have a theme...so it's time for Muck & the Mires to double pump you off your feet with "Mata Hari" so that The Cool Jerks can intercept the inbounds pass with an over the top, E-string slappin' version of Don Gardners' "My baby likes to boogaloo". Rex Garvin & the Mighty Cravers keep the theme alive by double dribbling around the opposition ala Danny Ainge with the uber-hip "Sock it to 'em, JB pt. 1". Al Kooper resorts to taunting the other team and coming close to drawing a technical with "I can't keep from crying [sometimes]"....After a short pause for the cause and info break, Jimmy McCracklin reveals his real reason for playing the piano with "I'm looking for a woman"...true, true...and speaking of truths....The Truth give Donovan's "Hey Gyp [Dig the slowness]" a ride so that Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens as the universal question: "What have you done?"....Donna w/ Darrel Higham & the Enforcers have a go at Johnny Otis' "Casting My Spell" before The Madd weigh in with a cool cover of The Master's Apprentices' "War or the Hands of Time" single which originated on Astor Records 1967.....the smooth, hip sounds of Mose Allison could keep the madman over there in Iran occupied long enough so that Frankie Lee Sims could infiltrate the party at the mosque with "She likes to boogie real low"....which is one of the coolest blues toons ever!! Time to put this Pod to bed with Mott the Hoople covering Leslie West offa his first long player...."Long Red"....
