Send us a textThe journey from outward success to inner collapse—and the path back to authentic living—takes center stage in this compelling conversation with Nick Jonsson, international bestselling author and executive coach.Nick's story begins with transformation through adversity when a motorcycle accident in his twenties forced him from construction work to academia, eventually propelling him up the corporate ladder in Southeast Asia. Yet reaching the executive summit—complete with five-story house, drivers, and staff—marked not fulfillment but the beginning of his fall. "That was when I was the most ungrateful and sort of unhappy ever in my life," Nick reveals with striking candor. What followed was a three-year spiral into alcoholism, isolation, and despair as Nick traded his gym membership for a bar stool and healthy habits for fast food. His powerful description of addiction as "slow, gradual suicide" highlights how corporate culture often enables destructive behaviors while simultaneously isolating those suffering. As Nick explains, executives—particularly expatriates—face unique challenges navigating cultural differences while maintaining authentic connections. The conversation takes a powerful turn when Nick shares how vulnerability became his salvation. Opening up to his now-second wife began his recovery journey, while losing a friend to suicide in 2019 inspired his book "Executive Loneliness." Today, seven years sober, Nick leads support groups for men and senior executives, creating safe spaces where vulnerability becomes strength rather than weakness. Most compelling is Nick's transformation from success-driven executive to authentic human being. Now pursuing therapy credentials to specialize in addiction recovery, he shares how sports replaced alcohol as his connection medium—allowing this self-described introvert to build genuine relationships through side-by-side activities rather than face-to-face confrontation.Whether you're navigating leadership challenges, questioning conventional success metrics, or supporting someone through addiction, this episode offers profound insights into the power of authentic connection and the courage to show up as your true self.To reach Nick, go to his website: http://www.nickjonsson.com You can also find all his links at http://podfol.io/profile/nick-jonssonHis book "Executive Loneliness" can be purchased at http://www.nickjonsson.com/executive-loneliness-book Freed.ai: We'll Do Your SOAP Notes!Freed AI converts conversations into SOAP note.Use code Steve50 for $50 off the 1st month!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Our guest this week is Master Coach and TED speaker Nick Johnsson In this episode:- Nick spent 11 years climbing the corporate ladder, However when he did reach the senior roles he was striving for he felt unfulfilled and full of self doubt Nick resigned from his job which led to divorce so he turned to alcohol for relief Alcohol became his coping tool for stress and unexpressed emotions. After 2 or 3 years of heavy drinking he reached rock bottom and found his health was collapsing At age 40, he realized he needed help—he began to share his feelings with his new wife, got medical help, and joined a 12-step program. He has been sober for nearly 7 years since that first meeting. These days Nick is an executive and sobriety coach, studying psychology to become a therapist. Runs men's groups and peer support networks He also works with corporates across Asia to address vulnerability, burnout, and connection. We agreed on the "power of vulnerability"— which is central to our philosophy here at Tribe Sober Being open and honest and sharing our feelings is so critical for healing and growth and it seems to happen naturally in our community as we have a common struggle that binds us However I was intrigued as to how he could get hard nosed business men and women to be vulnerable Nick explained that he uses keynotes and workshops in corporates to create safe spaces for open conversation. He shares his own story and then encourages the most senior executives to lead by example, sharing personal stories to build trust and openness. Executive Burnout & the importance of Resilience Nick warns about three signs of burnout: denial, changed habits, and secrecy. Defines resilience as seeking help and using support systems, not just “pushing through.” Nick has written a Book called: Executive Loneliness Based on a survey showing 30% of executives feel isolated. 75% wouldn't ask for help; 84% wouldn't talk about their mental health at work. Follow-up book in progress with case studies and a holistic leadership model. Connect via LinkedIn or find his book Executive Loneliness on Amazon/Audible. Nick Jonsson climbed the corporate ladder for over a decade before realizing his success came at a devastating personal cost. After hitting rock bottom with alcoholism, depression, and failed relationships, he found the courage to admit he needed help. By embracing vulnerability and making amends to those he had hurt, Nick discovered a new path forward based on honesty and connection rather than achievement alone. His experience revealed how many high-powered executives suffer silently behind professional masks while feeling deeply isolated. Nick now helps other professionals avoid his painful journey by teaching them to prioritize holistic well-being and find purpose beyond corporate success.TAKEAWAYSHigh-achieving executives often suffer from "smiling depression" - appearing successful while experiencing intense isolation and mental health struggles.Fear of vulnerability in professional settings can lead to catastrophic thinking and self-sabotage, even when performing well externally.Corporate culture can foster addictive behaviors as coping mechanisms for mounting pressure and performance anxiety.Making amends and moral inventories are essential steps in recovery, not just from addiction but from disconnected lifestyles.Finding purpose beyond professional achievement creates sustainable well-being and authentic connection with others.Creating safe spaces for vulnerability in business settings can literally save lives, as approximately 30% of executives experience loneliness.CONNECT WITH NICKWebsite: www.nickjonsson.comLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/nick-jonssonYouTube: www.youtube.com/c/NickJonssonInstagram: www.instagram.com/jonssonnickFacebook: https://web.facebook.com/jonsson.nickBuy "Executive Loneliness" on Amazon

Loneliness is possible even when we are surrounded by people. In today's culture, we have more opportunities than ever to connect - we can face a family member, catch up with a video chat or reach out with a text message. Yet we often feel disconnected from others. My guest on the podcast this week is Nick Jonsson, an executive coach and alcohol-free coach who understands the impact of loneliness. In fact, he wrote a book on the subject, 'Executive Loneliness'. In 2018, Nick found himself stressed out, drinking too much and feeling disconnected from his family, his friends and from life. He decided to make a change and, with the help of a 12-step program, he started his sober journey. Because of the anonymity of his program, Nick recovered in secret and didn't share openly about his new lease on life. That changed in 2019 when a good friend committed suicide. Nick realized that he had no idea his friend was struggling, and he vowed to start a brave conversation about loneliness, mental health and recovery. In this insightful conversation we talk aboutNick's descent into unhealthy habits due to executive lonelinessHow he was able to dig himself out with a lot of work and facing the challengesTips for dropping the excusesHow fitness and nutrition are also linked to this challengeHow he is now living his life in an intentional way to maintain his health, happiness and the success of his business. Nick Jonsson grew up in Sweden where drinking beer was kind of a way of life. His drinking escalated when he moved to Australia for college and then got out of control when he started working in advertising and PR in Southeast Asia where the ex-pat community thrived in a lively and inexpensive bar scene. His life was turned upside down after a couple job losses and he soon found himself drinking just to make it through the day. Eventually, he was hospitalized and managed through phamaceutical intervention and twelve steps to get sober. When a friend and colleague lost his life to suicide, a message Nick posted on line went viral, and he now divides his time between his work running an executive peer support group and his work as a writer and speaker. He has a new book out, Executive Loneliness, that is available everyhwere.
Loneliness, isolation, anxiety and depression are just some of the feelings that plague us when we're in the throes of addiction. They are the reason a lot of people drink and get caught in the cycle of a dysfunctional relationship with alcohol. Today my guest Nick Jonsson shares his experience of abusing alcohol, losing his marriage, and the depths of his despair before finally finding a solution that transformed his life. Nick has taken what he has learned and wrote a book for those in the corporate world who are struggling in silence, in hopes of bringing solutions for a more peaceful, connected and fulfilling life. It was actually so interesting for me to hear how in some parts of the world, the message of recovery is still not reaching the people who need it. There's still so much stigma attached to alcohol use disorder. I would encourage you, my loyal subscribers, to share this episode with all your friends. You just never know who might be able to help. After Nick Jonsson, a Swedish-born, Southeast Asian businessman, found the mounting stresses of his job and climbing the corporate ladder untenable, he began drinking heavily, abandoned his fitness regimen, and put on a ton of weight, leading to him losing his job, as well as his wife and son. After getting help to control his alcoholism, Nick, who has now been sober for six years, recognized that one of the primary reasons business leaders were failing was having no one available to open up to about these stresses. Instead, they blew off steam in the bars and in other unhealthy outlets. He realized that businessmen, in particular, could benefit from having support to cope, just as he had to regain his sobriety. The well-traveled Nick now leads the Executive's Global Network in Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia to bring business leaders together to discuss issues they face both in and out of the office. He encourages leaders all over the globe to seek out similar groups before work stresses cause them to slip down the slopes that he did. His book, “Executive Loneliness – The 5 Pathways to Overcoming Isolation, Stress, Anxiety, and Depression in the Modern Business World” is an Amazon worldwide bestseller, and provides a very logical framework with which to put anyone, not just business leaders, onto the path of a more fulfilling career and overall life. In the meantime, Nick has hammered himself back into prime shape and is one of the top-ranked competitors in the Ironman 70.3 Triathlon World Championship in New Zealand this December. Waiting too long can lead to increased anxiety and even depression.Embrace vulnerability: Leaders should practice vulnerability and empathy, creating a culture where it's safe to share challenges. By being open about personal experiences and struggles, leaders can foster stronger connections within their teams and break down barriers that contribute to isolation.Resilience and perseverance: Building resilience is essential for both individuals and organizations. Leaders should demonstrate resilience through their actions, showing that they can navigate challenges effectively and bounce back from setbacks.Reflect on purpose and hobbies: Encouraging individuals to reflect on their purpose in life and revisit past hobbies can help them find fulfillment outside of work. Engaging in activities that bring joy and connection can contribute to overall well-being and combat feelings of loneliness.Seek help when needed: If feelings of hopelessness, burnout, or depression become overwhelming, it's crucial to seek help and support. There are numerous resources available, including support groups, hotlines, therapy, and counseling, to assist individuals in navigating difficult times and fostering personal growth.Top 3 Takeaways for the Audience:Treat vulnerability like a muscle and actively practice it in your safe spaces. Share your challenges and experiences with trusted individuals to foster connection and growth.Take the initiative to find both professional and personal safe spaces where you can freely discuss work-related and personal matters with like-minded individuals. This can include peer groups, mentors, coaches, or support networks.Use journaling as a tool for reflection and problem-solving. Write down your thoughts and feelings, both positive and painful, and take action by reaching out for help or discussing them with someone you trust. Regularly review your journal to address any unresolved issues and ensure peace of mind before bedtime. How to Connect with James:Website: https://www.nickjonsson.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-jonsson

“It's lonely at the top” - this is a comment many business leaders in organisations admit where trusted relationships, can often prove sparse. In sport, for coaches and athletes this can also be the case the higher you go up the success ladder. These statements inform episode #197 where the author of the book Executive Loneliness, and Co-Founder and Managing Director of the Executives' Global Network, Singapore, Nick Jonsson tells me about his experiences as well as sharing what he found when he researched this topic for his book. We end up discussing the power of talking about the challenges that you face, the benefits of peer support and how difficult it can be to share your vulnerabilities. In addition self-care and how you can learn to look after yourself better so that your mental and physical health, and in turn your performance levels do not deteriorate are talking points. Key Learning Points: Many executives suffer from smiling depression where they put up a beautiful facade of what life really is like. Behind the scenes, it's not the real truth and they're not being their authentic self. This then becomes very tiring and painful. Some executives often don't want to bother their boss, HR team or even their partner at home as it is very difficult for them to have these types of conversations discussing emotional issues they may be facing. Individual and peer support can be very powerful for executives. The commitment shown by executives, if they are not self-aware, can be harmful to their physical and emotional health, where burnout can become a big factor and unhelpful habits often then creep into our lives. On a scale of 1-10 how important is self-care to you? We need to slow down our conversations and not just say, “I'm fine,” when people ask how we are feeling. ~ Nick Jonsson How often do you respond, “I'm fine” when someone asks how you are feeling? It's almost automatic–partly because it's a standard greeting, but also because many of us believe that sharing our feelings, especially if we don't feel like rainbows and sunshine, is a sign of weakness. Being vulnerable and admitting to feeling lonely, stressed, anxious or depressed is particularly taboo if you're an executive in today's business world. We expect our leaders to be strong, even if that means they must ignore their humanity and the negative feelings that sometimes come with it. The problem is that refusing to acknowledge or manage those feelings only compounds the problem, weakening the ability to lead and live effectively and happily. Nick Jonsson knows first-hand the perils of suppressing negative feelings. After moving to a foreign country, leaving friends and family behind, Nick struggled with isolation and turned to some unhealthy ways to manage the strain. It was after a friend's suicide that he realized the problem was more widespread than simply personal. Nick founded the Executives' Global Network–a confidential peer networking group of over 700 executives to share their challenges, receive support and learn. He also authored Executive Loneliness: The 5 Pathways to Overcoming Isolation, Stress, Anxiety and Depression in the Modern Business World, and created a suicide prevention organization. Here at Brilliantly Resilient, we know that life isn't always brilliant. Anyone can experience negative feelings–regardless of how things look to those on the outside. Building a tribe of support is essential to mental health, as is allowing ourselves to acknowledge our vulnerability. Once we do, we often find a community of others who not only feel the same way, but serve as a source of strength as we regain our emotional equilibrium. To hear more of Nick's wisdom, tune into this episode of the Brilliantly Resilient podcast, and be sure to listen for these additional bits of brilliance: Executive men especially keep secret and silent until we can't cope any more and we turn to other things that can end up harming us. Vulnerability and being able to speak openly and honestly about what we're feeling is a gift. We need to find safe places to talk about how we feel. Many people are not responding. They are terrified about opening up. There is so much shame or guilt. We don't have the tools to manage our relationships and feelings of isolation as executives. You can't expect your team to talk to you if you aren't willing to be vulnerable yourself. We need to exercise our muscle of vulnerability. Dare to be vulnerable and show that you're human. We can learn to cultivate a healthy mind and lead with empathy by embracing vulnerability, building resilience through personal experience and the journey to emotional intelligence, and supporting our community. Let's be Brilliantly Resilient together! XO, Mary Fran & Kristin
