Do you wake up feeling on it? The yogurt bowl is perfect, the salad at lunch is perfect, the snack is exactly 150 calories. And then 9pm hits and you come home exhausted, the kitchen is calling your name, and something shifts. The chips, the cereal, the ice cream, whatever is in the pantry, you cannot stop. Then comes the guilt, the "I already messed up so I might as well keep going," and the promise that tomorrow will be different. Nighttime eating is not a willpower problem. It is your body and your mind sending you a message you have been ignoring all day.I am taking you back to my college apartment, deep in my own weight loss journey, doing everything right by diet culture standards all day and then completely snapping after 10pm, going straight for the ice cream or cereal in my roommate's fridge and not being able to stop. I thought I had a nighttime eating problem, but what I actually had was an all-day restriction problem, and the nighttime eating was just the inevitable result. We are breaking down the three real messages your food noise is sending you at night. Why under eating during the day is one of the strongest predictors of losing control at night, why using food as your only coping tool for stress makes complete sense and what to build instead, and why the forbidden fruit effect means the foods you restrict hardest during the day become the ones you cannot stop eating after dark. I also share how this exact shift helped one of my clients, a teacher completely wiped by stress eating, lose 50 pounds. You were never broken and you were never weak. You were hungry, stressed, and restricted, and your body did exactly what a hungry, stressed, restricted body does. Once you know what your food noise is actually trying to tell you, your nights get a whole lot quieter.xoxo,JackieMORE FROM JACKIE: >

Sleep can sometimes feel unproductive, but believe it or not, sleep is valuable in more ways than we realize! Sure there are many physical benefits, but there are also important spiritual benefits. Brett McCracken, author of The Wisdom of Sleep: How Rest Reveals God's Truth and Revives Weary Souls, joins Arlene to explore why God designed humans to need sleep at all. They discuss sleep as a gift of grace that can't be earned, the vulnerability of nighttime and what it teaches about dependence on God, and practical tips for helping both adults and children sleep better. The conversation also turns to how screens have replaced older nighttime dangers, and how sleep itself pushes back against an AI-driven culture that prizes constant productivity. Brett shares personal reflections as a father of four on choosing rest over an ever-growing to-do list. 03:53 — The central question: why did God design humans to need sleep? 05:52 — Sleep as an ungratefully-received gift of grace 06:38 — Nighttime vulnerability and learning to trust God's protection 10:03 — Practical sleep tips for adults and kids 15:27 — Phones and screens as the new "danger of the night" 18:23 — John Piper's quote on sleep as a corrective to pride 26:21 — AI, human limitation, and what sleep reveals about being human Get a copy of Brett McCracken's book, The Wisdom of Sleep, on Amazon and everywhere books are sold. Can't Sleep Because It's Too Hot — Coherent Breathing for Hot Night Insomnia & Anxiety | Guided Sleep Meditation Anchored - The bespoke app from Calming Anxiety - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/anchored-panic-anxiety/id6785035669Can't sleep because it's too hot? You have turned the pillow over three times, the cool side lasted about forty seconds, and now your mind has decided the restlessness means something is wrong. It doesn't. This ten-minute guided sleep meditation is built for warm, balmy August nights when the body can't settle and anxiety fills the gap. Tonight's breath is coherent breathing — also known as resonant breathing or HRV breathing. Five seconds in, five seconds out, no holding and nothing forced. Martin calls it the still breath, because on a night like this everything else is moving and this is the one thing that isn't. Cool air arrives at the tip of the nose and leaves a little warmer, which means every out breath is quietly letting heat go. From there we settle the body the way it actually cools itself — feet out from under the covers, palms up, jaw unclenched — and move into a soft visualisation of silver-blue moonlight, the light of a night that has already begun to cool. Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic Martin Hewlett. If you drift off before the end, good. That is success, not failure. ⏱️ Time Chapters * 00:00 – The cool side of the pillow: why hot nights feel like anxiety* 00:38 – Sponsored by Anchored* 01:10 – Welcome from Martin* 01:30 – Settling the body: feet out, palms up, jaw unclenched* 02:01 – Tonight's breath: coherent breathing, five in and five out* 05:08 – Visualisation: cool silver-blue moonlight* 05:56 – Today's gentle affirmations* 08:16 – Your three daily caring tips* 09:19 – Coming back gently* 10:26 – Share the show and sign-off

If you are up most nights worrying about money scenarios that may or may not happen, this episode is for you. I know how hard it is… In this episode, we explore why financial uncertainty can feel so overwhelming, especially when our capacity is already depleted by caregiving, grief, burnout, health concerns, work pressure or major life transitions. You'll learn how the nervous system responds to uncertainty, how reduced capacity can turn a future possibility into a present emergency, and how to distinguish useful preparation from fear-based forecasting. We'll also explore the certainty-seeking loop: the cycle of one more calculation, one more scenario and one more question, all in the hope that enough thinking will finally make us feel safe.Because some money stress needs a plan. Some money stress needs care. And often, it needs both.In this episode, we explore:Why even exciting uncertainty can activate the nervous systemHow capacity affects our ability to tolerate financial unknownsThe window of tolerance in ordinary, everyday languageThe difference between practical preparation and fear-based forecastingHow to identify the specific problem your worry is trying to preventWhy every possible future scenario does not require a plan todayHow one small practical step can build agency and self-trustWhat to do when your mind continues asking, “But are we absolutely sure?”An IFS-inspired* practice for meeting the part of you that carries financial fear*The guided reflection in this episode is inspired by Internal Family Systems and is offered for education and gentle self-reflection. It is not a substitute for mental health treatment or individualized financial advice.⭐️ Book Your Introductory SessionIf you're tired of wondering why money feels harder than it should, I invite you to book a 1:1 Financial Wellness Session.Together, we'll explore the emotional, behavioral, and nervous system patterns driving your financial decisions, identify what's getting in the way, and create a practical path forward that actually works for your real life.Because I BET you don't need more financial advice... you need help understanding why you're struggling to do what you already know would help. You can book your session here. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ If this episode made you think, gave you a new perspective, or helped you feel a little less alone, would you do me a favor?Leave a 5-star review on Spotify or Apple Podcasts and email me a screenshot. Every September, doctors see a jump in asthma attacks and ER visits. It's called Asthma Peak Week, and it usually hits the third week of September, right when families are settling into their school routines. Kortney and Dr. Payel Gupta are joined again by Liz Elliott, a nurse administrator in school health services for Montgomery County, Maryland, and a returning guest from our food allergy episode. This time, Liz answers the questions parents ask most about asthma at school, from what actually happens during a flare to whether their child's inhaler needs to be with them or in the health room. What we cover in this episode about Asthma Peak Week from the school nurse perspective Can my child self-carry their inhaler? The rules on self-carry, and why kindergartners and teenagers are handled differently. Does the school have stock rescue inhalers (albuterol)? What stock albuterol is, and what happens if your child's own inhaler isn't there yet. What happens if my child has a flare at school? Learn the protocol that is in place if your child experiences an asthma attack, and what happens for kids who experience their first asthma flare. Signs of asthma parents might miss that their child's asthma is not under control. Nighttime awakenings and an "asthma cough" can all be early warning signs. Closing the gap between home and school. Why the plan your provider signs has to match what's sent to school, and what to bring on day one. Mike returns for the conclusion of his 1982 Oregon campground encounter, picking up with two sets of reflective eyes watching him from the darkness near a picnic table. At first, he assumes he is dealing with deer, wolves, or some other familiar animal and repeatedly tries to scare them away. But as his flashlight begins to fade and he moves closer, the shapes refuse to behave like anything he recognizes.Standing only twelve to fourteen feet away, Mike watches one figure rise to an estimated height of more than eight feet. Moments later, he notices an even larger presence beside a tree, with its eyes appearing nearly eleven feet above the ground. He searches for antlers, ears, a muzzle, or any other feature that might explain what he is seeing, but nothing fits. Instead of running, Mike talks to the figures, throws rocks, sings “Kumbaya,” and eventually holds out an apple into the darkness. Something large and covered in hair gently takes it from his hand. The next morning, Mike measures the surrounding trees and branches to confirm the heights he witnessed. Even then, he does not immediately call the creatures Bigfoot. It is not until 2009, after hearing a similar encounter discussed on a podcast, that he begins connecting this night with several other unexplained experiences from his past. Looking back, Mike says the most disturbing realization is not simply what may have been standing beside him, but how completely defenseless he would have been had the encounter turned violent.Email BrianJoin Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? Dr. Li explains what actually drives midlife weight — the sleep, the stress, the timing of when we eat, the reduction in muscle mass — and he does it without asking us to give up a single dinner we love. In fact, he shows us how a healthy weight and a real love of eating go together, rather than being at odds. Why does your child completely shut down anytime you bring up feelings? Should you actually ignore tantrums... or is that some of the worst parenting advice we've been given? And if your child is potty trained during the day but still having accidents at night... is something wrong? In this Q&A episode, we're answering the parenting questions we hear over and over again—the ones that leave even thoughtful, loving parents second-guessing themselves and wondering if they're getting it all wrong. We cover:- Nighttime potty training (and what's actually developmentally normal)- Whether you should ignore tantrums (spoiler: we have thoughts)- What to do when your child refuses to talk about their feelings- Why some kids completely shut down when emotions come up- Healthy ways to help kids express anger instead of stuffing it down- How to build emotional intelligence without making your child feel pressured or overwhelmed- The science behind why connection, not punishment, is what actually helps kids learn emotional regulationYou'll walk away knowing exactly what actually helps kids build emotional regulation, why anger deserves a complete rebrand, and how the way many of us were raised is still shaping the way we parent today. And we can almost guarantee there's one idea in this episode that you'll think about during your child's very next meltdown, and it'll change how you respond.Plus:Kristin and Deena discover they are complete opposites when it comes to movie theaters, sleepovers, and basically existing as humans, Deena explains why she'd happily skip every girls' trip forever, and Kristin has a surprisingly emotional realization about anger that might just change the way you think about your own emotions, too. This episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products and services.
