Mark Haddon might be best known for his 2003 breakout novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. But it's only the tip of a body of work that stretches across genres and artforms. He's the author of three other adult novels, including The Porpoise and two collections of short stories. Dogs and Monsters came out last year. He's also written poetry and plays. Before The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Mark wrote over a dozen children's books. He's also an illustrator and visual artist. In this episode, Dr. Marianne Miller explains why anorexia and night eating syndrome frequently overlap and how daytime restriction drives nighttime eating through biological survival responses and nervous system stress. She reframes night eating as adaptation rather than loss of control and challenges treatment messages that rely on shame or rigid control. This conversation centers trauma-informed, neurodivergent-affirming eating disorder recovery and introduces non-punitive tools that support regulation, safety, and sustainable change. Why Anorexia and Night Eating Syndrome Often Occur Together Many clinical frameworks treat anorexia and night eating syndrome as separate or opposing diagnoses. In practice, restriction, energy deficit, and nervous system activation during the day often lead the body to seek nourishment at night when threat levels feel lower. Daytime nourishment becomes more sustainable when eating feels safe enough and emotionally tolerable. Gentle structure can support regulation without imposing rigid rules, and trauma-informed, neurodivergent-affirming treatment allows the body to receive nourishment without overwhelming threat. Mark Haddon might be best known for his 2003 breakout novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. But it's only the tip of a body of work that stretches across genres and artforms. He's the author of three other adult novels, including The Porpoise and two collections of short stories. Dogs and Monsters came out last year. He's also written poetry and plays. Before The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Mark wrote over a dozen children's books. He's also an illustrator and visual artist. Julie Winterbottom has written a wide range of books aimed at children, including books on farts, pranks and horror — all designed for maximum humor, spine chills and fun. Her most recent work is a little different: "Magic in a Drop of Water" tells the story of ecologist Ruth Patrick, who did pioneering research connecting biodiversity to river pollution and helped to write the 1972 clean water act. It's a beautiful book in terms of both the story it tells and the gorgeous illustrations of marsh snails, hugsuckers and, above all, diatoms, the family of phytoplankton that appear in all bodies of water and that were the focus of Patrick's work. In addition to book projects, Julie also plays cajun accordion and volunteers with multiple local causes, including Beacon Prison Rides and Beacon Climate Action Now. At 68, she offers a wonderful example of someone in endless pursuit of ways to create, connect with others, and give back to this community and those in need.
