This is the final episode of the 4-part series, 2 am Pep Talks. You can check out Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 by clicking these links. Today's episode is all about hope! It is essential to understand that this season of early morning wake-up times will pass. Sleeping through the night again will happen for you, even though you may wonder now if you will ever sleep enough to feel like yourself again. A perinatal mood and anxiety disorder can increase the likelihood of thoughts filled with self-judgment, negativity, and hopelessness. Having to attend to the middle-of-the-night details of infant care can, even without PMADs, leave you feeling wrung out, tired, and isolated. It's hard to maintain hope that this phase will shift when you are in the middle of it. Believe me, with time, practice, and support, everything will get easier, but it's often difficult to see through to the other side. Join me for today's discussion. Show Highlights: Identify one thing you are looking forward to in the morning–even if it's just that first cup of coffee! Nighttime care can feel monotonous and never-ending. Look at all the things you've learned! Take encouragement from other moms who can validate your experiences. Learn to validate your own feelings. Resilience and growth are yours to claim and honor. Tips for that middle-of-the-night time: Use visualizations and affirmations. Assure yourself that you are learning, shifting, and growing. Be gentle with yourself. Get better sleep tonight by quitting these unhealthy night habits immediately. 0:00 Introduction: Avoid these habits that hurt sleep2:22 Avoiding screens for better sleep 4:28 Alcohol before sleep 8:05 Avoid these before bed10:05 More sleep equals better sleep1. Carbs and sugar before bedGrowth hormone rises at night, but is blunted by a rise in blood sugar. This hormone helps you burn fat, repair tissues, and build muscle mass. A massive blood sugar spike before bed can interfere with your sleep and cause grogginess, fatigue, cravings, and irritability the next day.2. Screens and lights before bedAvoid lights and screens, especially those emitting blue light, for at least 2 hours before bed. Melatonin is suppressed by light. Not only does this powerful antioxidant help you sleep, but it's more important than glutathione for detoxification and DNA repair. Blue light also suppresses deep delta wave sleep and REM sleep. 3. Using alcohol to fall asleep Alcohol tricks your body into falling asleep, but you're not really sleeping: your body is working to detoxify alcohol. Alcohol increases cortisol and adrenaline, and depletes electrolytes. It also depletes vitamin B1, which can cause anxiety and nervous tension the next day. Instead of alcohol, try magnesium glycinate in warm water or kombucha tea.4. Late-night junk food Junk foods typically contain seed oils, which are inflammatory and hard on the gallbladder. If you're craving salty food before bed, try putting a small amount of sea salt in your mouth or adding more salt to your dinner.5. Antihistamines or sleeping pills before bed Sedated, artificial sleep does not leave you feeling rejuvenated and rested in the morning. People often feel less focused with decreased concentration and memory. You may eventually need more of the drug to create the same effect.6. Sleeping next to your cell phoneYour cell phone and charging cable both emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs), which can negatively impact your brain and sleep cycles. EMFs also interfere with melatonin. Keep your cell phone on airplane mode or away from your body when you're sleeping. 7. Sleep deprivationSleep deprivation can make sleep more difficult in itself. You need at least 7 hours of sleep each night. Try to get to sleep at 10:00 p.m. each night, or 11:00 p.m. at the latest. Montreal After Dark by Matthieu Caron explores the transformation of Montreal's vibrant nightlife from the early twentieth century through the reformist era of Mayor Jean Drapeau. Once known for its lively scene of sex, jazz, liquor, and gambling, Montreal's nightlife came under strict regulation as Drapeau sought to curb corruption and reshape the city into a global metropolis. The book details how city authorities and police worked together to control nighttime activities, especially during major events like Expo 67 and the 1976 Olympics. It examines the tensions between maintaining order and responding to social unrest, highlighting how debates over public space, acceptable behaviour, and sexual norms reflected broader struggles over the city's identity. Matthieu Caron reveals how the regulation of nightlife became intertwined with consumer capitalism and political power, fundamentally altering Montreal's urban culture and the experience of the city after dark. In Psalm 91, the writer paints a vivid picture of God’s protective care—His wings stretched wide, sheltering His children in a place of warmth and safety. It’s a comforting image for anyone who lies awake, anxious about what might come. Amanda Idleman reminds us that we can rest securely beneath those wings. God’s faithfulness is not fragile or fleeting; it’s our shield and rampart, our steady defense when darkness falls. His promise is clear—He sends His angels to guard us, He hears our cries for help, and He delivers us from fear and danger. Amanda shares from her own story of witnessing God’s protection and redemption in her family’s life. Through foster care and adoption, she has seen how God covers His children—restoring what was broken, protecting the vulnerable, and bringing light into the darkest places. That same care and covering are available to all who call on His name. When the night feels heavy, and fears start to whisper, remember that God’s light is greater than any darkness. He never leaves, never sleeps, and never abandons His people. You are safe beneath His wings.
