Come along as I do a quick recap of object relations theory in preparation for my LCSW exam. This rundown is short, sweet, and filled with rapproachement. I hope these audio summaries of theories sometimes utilized in social work are helping others study and learn. The information about this theory came from the Dawn Apgar Social Work Licensing Clinical Exam, A Comprehensive Study Guide book (3rd edition). No this is not an ad, just the book I'm studying from.
Today, Karen welcomes Kate Haberman, founder of The Center for Foundational & Relational Wellness, for the conclusion of their conversation on Object Relations & Attachment Theory.

Traditionally, trauma has been defined as negatively impacting external events, with resulting damage. This book puts forth an entirely different thesis: trauma is universal, occurring under even the best of circumstances and unavoidably sculpting the very building blocks of character structure. In Traumatic Experiences of Normal Development: An Intersubjective, Object Relations Listening Perspective on Self, Attachment, Trauma, and Reality (Routledge, 2020), Dr. Carl Shubs depathologizes the experience of trauma by presenting a listening perspective which helps recognize the presence and effects of traumatic experiences of normal development (TEND) by using a reconstruction of object relations theory. This outlook redefines trauma as the breach in intrapsychic organization of Self, Affect, and Other (SAO), the three components of object relations units, which combine to form intricate and changeable constellations that are no less than the total experience of living in any given moment. Bridging the gap between the trauma and analytic communities, as well as integrating intrapsychic and relational frameworks, the SAO/ TEND perspective provides a trauma-based band of attunement for attending to all relational encounters including those occurring in therapy. Though targeted to mental health professionals, this book will help enable therapists and sophisticated lay readers alike to recognize the impact of relational encounters, providing new tools to understand the traumas we have experienced and to minimize the hold they have on us. Karyne Messina is a licensed psychologist and psychoanalyst at the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis and am on the medical staff of Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. Vienna, 1884. A young man, highly intelligent, profoundly ambitious, but also nervy and anxious in character is stressing out about his life and prospects. He is something of a fearful over-thinker, which is to say an Enneagram Six in personality style, prone to panic attacks, depression, phobias, and various forms of paranoia. In this period of his existence, he is experiencing something that modern millennials often call their “quarter-life crisis”. Little does he know at the time, that his quarter-life-crisis will provide him (as well as us) with a revolutionary new idea about consciousness and the mind. This idea will shape not only the rest of his momentous life, but also ours, especially when it comes to how we understand and perceive our selves. -- A man said to the universe: “Sir, I exist!” “However,” replied the universe, “The fact has not created in me A sense of obligation.” -Stephen Crane
If you're the kind of person who listens to mental health podcasts, you're more likely than average to get pulled into an impromptu “helping role” with your family and friends. Sometimes we seek out these roles, but they can also be uncomfortable or one-sided. And sometimes we get stuck playing a role for someone else that we never wanted in the first place. On this episode of Being Well, Forrest and Dr. Rick use this situation as a way in to exploring the various roles we play in life, and the profound impact those often unconscious roles have on us. They talk about relationship models, how we select our roles, how familiar roles can keep us trapped in old patterns, enactments and triangulation, and how we can exit unhealthy systems.Watch the Episode: Prefer watching video? Today, we have the honour to host Dr. Susan Kavaler-Adler. Dr Susan has been practicing psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in NYC for over 40 years. She is the Founding Director of the Objects Relations Institute for Psychotherapy and the author of numerous deep and insightful books, We talked about a lot of very complex but important and topical issues, including: - Why we might be holding ourselves back from success because of an unconscious fear of retaliation - How parents who are 'too good' prevent us from growing up- What actually makes a good childhood?- Why do we need therapy at all, and can we heal our attachment wounds through other relationships?- Can we be 'emotionally anorexic/bulimic'? Why do some people reject love?- The difference between projection and projective identification (finally someone explains this!) Historian John Foot discusses the movement in 1960s Italy to reform and eventually abolish the psychiatric asylum system. Specifically, he'll be focusing on the work of Franco Basaglia, whose antifascist politics drove him to radically alter the way in which mental health treatment is managed in Italy. John Foot is a historian and author based at the University of Bristol. He is the author of numerous books on Italian history and most relevant to the discussion today he is the author of The Man who Closed the Asylums, published by Verso books in 2015 and recently co-edited Basaglia's International Legacy: From Asylum to Community with Tom Burns.
Object Relations is a series of discussions about the relationship between politics and the psyche produced in collaboration with The Polyphony.Taking its name from the psychoanalyst Melanie Klein's theory of how psyches develop in relationship to one another, this series will explore some questions about the politics of psychotherapy, psychiatry and psychoanalysis.Episodes will be published every Friday for the next four weeks, beginning (on July 29) with a conversation with Camille Robcis about institutional psychotherapy in France and North Africa. Institutional psychotherapy refers to a movement within psychiatry that occurred in the aftermath of the rise of fascism in Europe. Medical practitioners such as François Tosquelles, Frantz Fanon and Jean Oury began to apply social and political critiques to the practice of psychiatry in the hopes of producing ways of living that alleviated suffering and avoided the fascistic ways of relating to one and other produced by institutions.Camille Robcis is a professor of French and history at Columbia University and the author of Disalienation: Politics, Philosophy, and Radical Psychiatry in Postwar France, which was recently published by The University of Chicago press. In this conversation she explores the experiences of fascism and ‘concentrationism' that produced the conditions for Institutional Psychotherapy to emerge and how it relates to a broader history of psychiatry. She also reflects on what this movement offers us in understanding questions of the political, the personal and the psychic.Soundtrack by Mark Pilkington Artwork by Ava Gardner
The Object Relations or Harmony Groups were developed in part by Dr. David Daniels and Riso & Hudson to help us understand how we relate to, connect with, and engage with the world. An object relation is how we influence or are influenced by something/someone else. It is how we express ourselves through other people/things as an expression of a particular parental wound. In this episode, we discuss The Attachment Triad (Pragmatists). The Attachment Group is composed of Types 3, 6, and 9. Those with an attachment object relation feel satisfied if their needs (with people, situations, thoughts) are met, thereby securing a sense of self and stability. As a means of attaching themselves, these types adjust their ways to be consistent with important people and groups they want to be in good regard with. Fitting in, aligning, and thriving with others can be essential to these types. Attaching and detaching from others can also be used as an unconscious habit to prove one's importance and place. **Caryn's coaching rates will be going up soon so now is a great time to schedule your free 90-minute Clarity Call! https://carynberley.com/coaching** Have a Question? The Object Relations or Harmony Groups were developed in part by Dr. David Daniels and Riso & Hudson to help us understand how we relate to, connect with, and engage with the world. An object relation is how we influence or are influenced by something/someone else. It is how we express ourselves through other people/things as an expression of a particular parental wound. In this episode, we discuss The Rejection Triad (Relationists). The Rejection Group is composed of Types 2, 5, and 8. Those with a rejection object relation feel as though others reject them. Since others don't care about their needs, they reject their own needs too. Consequently, their relationships deal with issues like not wanting to be touched or nurtured. In spite of feeling rejected, they believe they only have one gift to offer to prevent future rejections. As a result of these rejections, they develop a sense of self by offering their talent. There is contentment in accepting that one has many gifts to offer the world and that what they perceive might be needed might not be true. Have a Question? An object relation is how we influence or are influenced by something/someone else. It is how we express ourselves through other people/things as an expression of a particular parental wound. In this episode, we discuss The Frustration Triad (Idealists/Utopians) The Frustration Group is composed of Types 1, 4, and 7. Each has an idea of how the world should be (and gets frustrated when it isn't). Those with the frustration object relation know what will make them happy, but they feel they seldom get it. They tend to become disillusioned with their happiness once they have discovered it. Consequently, they become frustrated as they begin their search again. Their sense of self is based on the pursuit of an ideal. There is contentment in accepting one's present situation and finding beauty, perfection, and freedom in what is. Have a Question? On today's episode, I will be discussing the last big theory under the umbrella of transgenerational theories, object relations/psychodynamic theory. This theory sees problems in how people relate to others based on their perceptions of the person vs. the actual person. It holds that change is the process of bringing the perceptions to light and connecting perceptions to real world. Before we launch into a discussion about childhood wounds & 8s, we think it's important to introduce an intriguing theory called Object Relations. It suggests that we formed our type structure (in all its quirky glory) in relationship to the ways our caregivers failed to provide either the Nurture or Protection function. We explore yet another set of triads: Frustration, Attachment and Rejection. But, we dig a little deeper into what this means for 8 brains as they're shaped in those first few years.
