The public relations industry has long been recognized as a female-dominated field, with women making up approximately two-thirds of the workforce. However, when it comes to leadership, women remain significantly underrepresented, comprising just one-third of top-tier roles. This disparity raises critical questions about the systemic barriers that prevent women from rising to senior leadership positions in PR agencies and organizations. In this episode, we examine the challenges faced by women in their careers, the personal and societal factors that hinder their progress, and the strategies they've employed to overcome these obstacles. Sue Heuman is a strong female leader in the PR industry, a designated Master Communicator through IABC, Past Chair of the IABC Global Communication Certification Council, and an executive leader. In this episode, Ruth Whippman discusses navigating the impossible standards of masculinity. Ruth has grappled with the conflicting emotions of mothering boys and societal shifts and she found herself questioning the very essence of masculinity and its impact on her sons. She delves into the challenges boys face in navigating societal expectations and the lack of language for them to articulate their experiences. Through her personal experience and research, Ruth sheds light on the overwhelming pressure boys encounter to conform to traditional masculine standards, while also questioning the divisive nature of the term "toxic masculinity." Key Takeaways: Understanding toxic masculinity and learning to empower boys to be their authentic selves Navigating the shifting landscape of raising sons for healthier relationships and respectful behavior Embracing the beauty of blending masculinity and femininity to create a more inclusive and empathetic society Embracing the profound impact of body shaming on men and how to promote positive body image for boys Redefining masculinity standards for boys to foster a culture of kindness, emotional intelligence, and self-expression For full show notes, click here! The standards placed upon women in North America and beyond are impossible. We are told to care for the family, but stay in shape; "get up and work", but be engaged mothers. We are genuinely, damned if you do - damned if you don't. This week, Shaunna and Lisa discuss these impossible standards and the ways the greater systems and institutions within our society are working to maintain these standards. Using examples like body image, motherhood, and sport, the duo unravels the true oxymorons of our society and highlight the women that are trying to create real change. ***If requiring a transcript, please email amelia@livefeisty.com*** **Support the Podcast* InsideTracker: Get 20% off at http://insidetracker.com/feisty (http://insidetracker.com/feisty) Orca: Use code IRONWOMEN15 for 15% off at https://www.orca.com/ (https://www.orca.com/) Hammerhead: Get a FREE heart-rate monitor with the purchase of a Hammerhead Karoo 2. Julie and Casey sit down with Master Chiller Audrey Holst, founder of Fortitude and Flow, to talk all things perfectionism and burnout—and how to find our way through, back to ourselves. Top Takeaways: Perfectionism is a survival mechanism...but what got you here, won't get you there. Perfectionism isn't just limited to the people who seem "perfect". It's an internal experience of trying to prove yourself as worthy in a world that benefits from keeping that knowledge from you, deeply rooted in Patriarchy and Capitalism. Individualism is counter to how we are built as humans. We are designed to work collectively, and collective resilience is more powerful than individual resilience. Getting out of perfectionism is not about mindset or manifesting. It's about getting out of your head and into your perception. Your perception is in your body. Your body not an afterthought to the brain! It's a whole system of perceiving and functioning in the world that actually informs the brain. Noticing is the first and most important step. Audrey Holst helps people reform their perfectionism so they can reclaim their agency and put their full energy into what really matters. Her work uses a combination of mindfulness and neuroscience tools and combines over a decade of experience teaching yoga with deep knowledge of the nervous system and extensive training and work as a Certified Professional Coach through the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC). Through her Fortitude & Flow® Process, Audrey guides individuals and groups through a holistic experience to shift the way they approach themselves and the things that matter to them – for good. Audrey’s upcoming book You’re Not Perfect — And Here’s How to Deal With That teaches people how to tap into their unique Operating System to un-velcro from the status quo and reclaim their agency. She leads a virtual membership collective that works with the lunar calendar called Renew, which prioritizes healing, rest, self-care, and community. Her 1:1 work with clients in Emerge reconnect and heal their relationships with their Operating Systems through intensive support and custom-designed practices. Audrey’s work pushes back on the spiritual bypassing and mindset-is-everything narrative that is rampant in the coaching and wellness industry. Perfectionism is a manufactured distraction designed to keep people from reclaiming their energy and agency while upholding Systems of Oppression. It’s time for something new.
