During his last presidency Donald Trump slapped a tariff on Kerrygold butter; costing its parent company, Ornua, €50m in one year. A fortnight into his second presidency and it's clear sweeping tariffs are now a core part of the agenda for his second stint in the White House. He's hit China with a 10% tax, while Canada and Mexico have been given a month before their US exports are levied with 25% duties. And the 78 year-old has been explicit about his plans to impose tariffs on goods coming from the European Union, saying the EU bloc's approach to trade is an “atrocity”. So, what exactly is a tariff and why is Donald Trump so focused on imposing them? And what does this all mean for Ireland's main exports and our country's foreign direct investment? Irish Times economics correspondent Eoin Burke Kennedy outlines how the 'Americanisation' of our economy has left us vulnerable to Trump's tariffs and tax plans, and what may be offered by Brussels to appease Washington's whims.Presented by Sorcha Pollak, produced by Aideen Finnegan. However, better lives also mean time well spent in their company. It’s been a busy week for the continent’s fintech scene. The past week saw MTN South Africa announce that it would be discontinuing its mobile money service due to “a lack of commercial viability”. This revelation comes months after Vodacom South Africa ended it’s catastrophic attempt at copying and pasting Kenya’s M-Pesa magic. Meanwhile, Madagascar became only the second African country after Tanzania to to roll out mobile money interoperability across the country's mobile networks. But easily one of the catchiest headline stories of the past week was about Barclays Africa’s involvement in what’s being celebrated as the very first blockchain verified financial transaction in the world by a major banking institution. The pilot deal between The Seychelles Trading Company Ltd. and Ornua saw the two companies harness a blockchain platform developed by Wave to trade a letter of credit. This transaction has to be Barclays’ most overt show of confidence in the potential of blockchain technology to deliver improved efficiencies in international trade. Also in this week’s African Tech Round-up, is a discussion Andile Masuku had with the Kenyan journalist, Eric Mugendi. Eric is Editor-at-large at iAfrikan.com, and also writes for his Tumbler called Kenyan Longreads. Eric joined Andile on the show to discuss the controversy that unfolded on Twitter around the African Tech Summit happening in London on September 29th. The event’s conspicuously mostly male non-black/non-African speaker list included folks many people in the Twitterverse did not feel were representative of Africa’s tech ecosystem, and also managed to leave out many worthy participants. Andile and Eric unpacked the issues at play. Music Credits: Music by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Music licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0

This week, Irish Farmers Journal editor Jack Kennedy was in Brussels when the Council of EU agriculture ministers met to address the crisis in farmgate prices. He met the minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, and asked him for his views on the measures decided on Monday.Meanwhile, Belgian farmers were protesting outside the building. Despite the disruption to the streets blocked by tractors, a Brussels woman told our reporter Amy Fitzgibbon that she supported the farmers. Some of the measures agreed on Monday aim to support exports. One example of recent efforts to access new markets is the opening of a factory in Saudi Arabia by Al Wazeen, a subsidiary of Ornua that makes local cheese from Irish milk powder. The Irish Farmers Journal’s agribusiness editor, Eoin Lowry, was there.New export markets are a hot topic for the beef industry, too. The chief executive of Dawn Meats, Niall Browne, was at the UCD ag debate last week and Anthony Jordan spoke with him about progress in the US and China as well as weight limits for cattle here.Trade with the US is fraught with a lot of hard questions: what will happen with the proposed TTIP trade agreement? What about genetically modified food and hormone-fed beef? For an American view on these questions, Irish Farmers Journal news correspondent Odile Evans met Ed Kee, the agricultural secretary of the US state of Delaware. With pig farmers facing a price crisis, Odile Evans met Dutch pig farmer Ruben Van Boekl and asked him about the situation in his country. A Nuffield scholar, Van Boekl is studying ways of adding value on farm in the pig sector. A series of articles on locally-led agri-environmental schemes begins this week in the Irish Farmers Journal. They provide funding for groups of farmers to organise and protect natural habitats, and the Burren has pioneered the system. Odile Evans spoke with Sharon Parr, a scientist working on the project.Margaret Hawkins wrote an article in this week’s Irish Country Living after visiting the WW1 battlefields in France and Belgium. Dermot Curran works as a guide on the historic sites and he told her how the fighting of 100 years ago still affects the work of farmers today. The Rose of Tralee, Elysha Brennan, is on the cover of Irish Country Living this week. She has a word of advice for anyone interested in taking part in the festival, in conversation with features editor Maria Moynihan.
