On 24 April 2013 the eight-story Rana Plaza building in Dhaka Bangladesh collapsed. The owners of a number of garment factories in the building had ignored the most basic safety regulations, and forced workers to keep working when it was clear the walls were cracking. In Bangladesh, workers are paid monthly, at the end of the month. The collapse happened on the 24th, and workers were threatened with non payment of wages, if they didn't enter the clearly unstable building. The confirmed death toll was 1,130. Approximately 2,500 injured people were rescued.Rana Plaza shows how little the fashion brands care about the lives of the workers that produce the clothes that make them insane profits. Guests today are Rupali Akter and Taslima Akter. Rupali is a survivor of the Rana Plazar collapse. She was in the building on the day, and she was buried under the rubble for 17 hours before being rescued. Taslima Akter is a photo journalist and activist. She was onsite in the immediate aftermath, documenting and bearing witness to the horror. Taslima is the Secretary and Rupali is the President of the Bangladesh Garment Workers Solidarity. Taslima is interpreting for Rupali in this interview. This interview was conducted in 2023, during an international solidarity visit to Melbourne to commemorate 10 years since the collapse. Today, 12 years later, not much has changed other than garment workers were instrumental in the self-imposed exile of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024.

Rana Plaza shows how little the fashion brands care about the lives of the workers that produce the clothes that make them insane profits.  My guests today are Rupali Akter and Taslima Akter. Taslima is interpreting for Rupali in this interview

This week I am being joined by someone who is a shining example of what it means to step into your own power. Today I am talking to Rupali Chandar, professor of Astrophysics at the University of Toledo and the current Associate Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Rupali got her PHD from Johns Hopkins, and she also has a double major in Physics and Astronomy from Haverford College. Rupali loves her research that focuses on understanding the physics of galaxy formation and evolution, and she is even currently leading a team of international scientists studying the most ‘extreme' star forming galaxies in the nearby university.  Rupali and I dive into why she chose the career she did, as well as the struggles she has had as a woman in a very male dominated field. Rupali shares what it has taken for her to find her own voice and to own the amazing gifts she has been given. We also talk a lot about how she has used her experiences to inspire her own children as well as many others to, “succeed on their own terms.” Know that you can connect with Rupali via email at, rupalichandar@gmail.com.

Indian homemakers hold a unique position in the fabric of family, community and the society at large. They may not be contributing to the Gross Domestic Product but in small and large, often invisible ways are incessantly contributing to Gentle Domestic Progress and are pillars of Indian social fabric in many ways.Today, this community finds itself at a curious crossroads  where they are holding some old, some new and some timeless questions. How to craft freedom-for-self while working on transcending our egos? How to remain anchored through ups-and-downs of life to bring out the best-in-yourself so that we might bring-out-the-best in our families? How to hold a mind of wisdom and heart of compassion for our personal and societal evolution? Linkee Arora is a masters graduate from Bits Pilani. In her role as a physics teacher at Fountainhead school, she was loved by one and all. Leaving that role was an emotional moment for her. She loves playing Ultimate Frisbee and trekking. At home, she played a key role in arranging her younger sister’s marriage before her own and herself married her “Ultimate” friend last year. She is an active member of MovedbyLove community where she participates and volunteers for Awakin Circles, Karma Kitchen and also MovedbyLove retreats. Recently, as her uncle and father were detected corona positive, and it has got her seriously reflecting on death and life. See 5 questions we asked Linkee. Rupali Bhuva : As a child, Rupali grew up loving to sketch. Little did young Rupali know that her love for art will become a medium for her inner exploration much later. For almost two decades now, Rupali has coached hundreds of students each year in Mumbai. Her “art classes” are much more than that – they are a natural healing process for rebellious teens, harried professionals, and homemakers looking for a change in routine. She does not effortfully seek to change lives, but it happens for sure - one paint brush stroke at a time. Rupali is also a long distance runner, with several marathons under her belt. Despite her hectic day schedule, she tries not to miss her daily run and workout. Rupali’s love for mother nature shows up in her choices - the gifts she chooses to give, the electric car she drives. A tireless volunteer, Rupali is above everything, a mother! Her two daughters and her supportive husband make her life complete. See 5 questions we asked Rupali. Mita Ketan Zaveri : A business manager, a social worker, a radio presenter and author Mita has donned multiple hats in her life. However, what defines her is an unmissable simplicity, sense of ease and care for those around her - perhaps ingrained in her as a child growing up in a family inspired by Gandhian values. Coming from a service-oriented environment and marrying into a business family was a pivotal event in her life, and what has followed is a life-long journey between surrender to ‘what-is’ and gentle striving to find her individual expression. She is an MA in Economics and if you are a radio fan, you may recognize her as the voice and vision behind many programs for Surat Akashwani around bridging literature with film music. She is deeply engaged with many social organizations like Jeevanbharti Mandal, Civil Hospital. She has also authored a book on parenting and a compilation of poems “Spandan”. See 5 questions we asked Mita. The conversation will be moderated by Pranita Walavalkar, lovingly called Neeti by all her friends. After leaving a long-time comfortable corporate job Neeti opened herself up to hear the plans of the Universe, and that has led to a powerful learning journey. Trying to find answers about life from a very young age led her to volunteer with the blind, the under-privileged and elderly. Neeti is an avid traveler and nature-lover, meditates daily and hosts Awakin Circles weekly. She strongly believes that service does not start when you have something to give; it blossoms naturally when you have nothing left to take. She lives in Pune, where she is blessed with a wonderful life partner, a son, an adorable Lhasa Apso, a little flower garden on the window, and sparrows on the sill that make her family complete. Of late, taking care of her elderly father suffering from alzheimers has been a transformational experience for her. See 5 questions we asked Neeti.

Though today the public and private sectors are treated as distinct if not separate, the situation was quite different in early modern England. Back then the two were often intertwined, with one of the best examples of this being the English East India Company. In her book A Business of State: Commerce, Politics, and the Birth of the East India Company (Harvard University Press, 2018), Rupali Mishra examines the relationship between the Company and the English state in the early 17th century, showing the many ways in which the two were linked. As Mishra explains, their involvement began with the very creation of the Company, through the granting of a patent that delegated a degree of sovereignty to it. This empowerment was important to the Company's success, though it also fueled conflicts both internally and with the broader London mercantile community. Added to the semi-official status that the Company sometimes possessed in its dealings abroad was the investment in the Company by many of the leading political figures of that time, including the king, James I. James was not above exploiting the Company as a tool of his policy, though the Company's sometimes difficult relationship with the crown worsened after his passing in 1625, as his successor Charles I posed yet another series of challenges the Company had to navigate in order to maintain its very existence. Trust, privacy, security, and many such words have got a different meaning in the coming decades as we moved from chawls to high-rises. Well, to discuss more about chawls and urban culture and their design, Today I have Rupali Gupte with us on Audiogyan. Rupali is an architect and a co-founder of Bard Studio in Mumbai. Her works include research on Indian urbanism with focus on architecture, urban culture, urban economy, property, housing, urban form, entrepreneurial and tactical practices. Rupali is one of the founding members of the urban research network, CRIT ( crit.in ( http://crit.in/ ) ) and the School of Environment and Architecture ( sea.edu.in ( http://sea.edu.in/ ) ). Questions * There seems to be 2 fascinating speculations about how did "Chawl" word originated. Can we start by that? * How would you explain Porosity of rooms in chawls? * Is chawl a public space or a private space? What is the reason behind it? Did it evolve because of the architecture or space evolved because of people? Or should i put it "Is chawl a concept or is it an architectural setup?" * Does Mumbai’s chawl system lend any character to the city? I have this personal strong judgement about why Mumbai has been so tolerant and patient. Either people are oblivious to what’s happening around or then they have built patience by standing in front of common chawl toilets. What is your take? * Can elites stay in chawl or it is designed for middle class? * Can you share your insights about what does "privacy and security" mean in chawl context? * If we envision Mumbai in 2050, what do you think; how chawls will be perceived if they remain in our memories...
