#836 Overcoming impostor syndrome is often the key to building your business and unlocking more sales. But how do you prove your expertise and become an authority in your space? Join me because, in today's episode, I continue the trip down memory lane I started in session 834! Going into the online course boom, I faced a pivotal moment in my entrepreneurial journey. I now had the confidence to take on bigger projects to help my students and audience. You'll hear about FlynnCon, my in-person conference, and how that led to the creation of our SPI Pro and All-Access Pass communities. I also want to give you a sneak peek at the future of SPI, so listen in! #653 Starting from nothing and working hard to build a business is relatable. But what happens when you finally "make it?" My returning guest, Sophie Walker of the Australian Birth Stories podcast, is the perfect example of someone who has built a brand from scratch and turned it into a vast empire. We last spoke in episode 432. Her show has since amassed over ten million downloads, and sponsors are lining up to support her work! She was one of our star students in Power-Up Podcasting, so I'm not surprised. But the responsibility of running a brand that's changing lives and the massive financial decisions involved can weigh anyone down. Join Sophie and me for this incredible conversation about podcasting, business growth, work-life balance, and building a team with a shared vision. We also discuss Sophie's first book, The Complete Australian Guide to Pregnancy and Birth, and much more. Listen in and enjoy! #546 I'm gonna be honest. What you're about to hear in today's episode might be a little disturbing. Okay, I'm kidding (mostly). You might cringe a little, though. That's because you're going to hear clips from my very first podcast episode ever, from July 2010. Podcasting was very difficult then. It was not just technically difficult, but hard because there were fewer people making shows and proving that this thing actually worked. It was also hard because I was very much in my own head, and the thought of putting my voice out into the world was scary. But I also knew a little bit about the power and potential of podcasting. And I knew I wanted to help people change their lives through podcasting as well. That's why I also want to share a special offer on our Power-Up Podcasting course. It's the best resource out there to get you up and running with the podcast of your dreams. Want to know how to be a podcast guest? It’s easier than you think… all you have to do is ask! Okay, there is admittedly MORE strategy than that, but you don’t get what you don’t ask for. Oftentimes, we’re so afraid of rejection that we don’t even bother asking for what we truly want. So the first key to pitching yourself is to actually DO it and ask for the interview! From there, we’ve got lots of practical, tangible advice in today’s episode for not only how to land spots as a podcast guest, but how to form genuine, lasting connections. As a podcast visibility expert and host of the Go Pitch Yourself podcast, my guest today Angie Trueblood knows that the only ‘perfect pitch’ is the one that leads with value and focuses on building a genuine connection. Whether she is teaching entrepreneurs how to pitch themselves or working behind the scenes to secure opportunities for others, Angie leverages her super-connector powers to grow businesses and build long-lasting relationships. When she’s not working with her clients or being active in her local community, she loves exploring Richmond, Virginia’s parks and playgrounds with her two kiddos, checking out new restaurants with her hubs, and laughing about motherhood over cocktails with friends. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why are podcasts the best outlet to increase visibility and grow your business? How to create genuine connections and friendships online How you can pitch yourself for podcasts when you don’t have the time Why you shouldn’t just go to iTunes and search for podcasts in your industry to pitch WHO to pitch, HOW to pitch, and WHAT to pitch to land an interview on your ideal podcasts Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. What if I told you that there was a highly effective, simple, and cheap way to grow your business? You’d want to try it, right? I would. But a huge number of side hustlers are ignoring this essential piece of expanding their reach and customer base. It’s called “Content Marketing” What is content marketing? Well, simply put, content marketing is when you share useful information on your blog, your youtube channel, your social media, what-have-you that does not explicitly promote what you sell. Some examples include if you’re running a food blog you could share recipes, tips on kitchen organization, or something like how to choose an Instapot. Again, something that your audience would find useful that has no push to sell anything. If your niche is health and fitness, maybe share your workout routine, or a routine you’d like to try as well, a daily menu, or even mindset journal prompts to help your readers with their fitness journaling. In the makeup niche, try giving a 5 minute face, tips for picking out the perfect shade of lipstick, or common mistakes beginners make. Notice that none of these examples mention selling anything. The content needs to be interesting and relevant. Keep it interesting and relevant, even if they don’t buy anything. Here’s the other thing, it needs to be sharable. This helps because it makes you known as an expert (for more on that you can listen to episode 40), or someone they can go to for their specific situation. It also expands your reach past your immediate circle. A problem many people run into is that when they share content is that it only reaches your mom and aunt, then some people you work with, and then maybe a person or two in their social circles but then it just plateaus or stops. You can’t find a way to break that circle. Just sharing content helps you expand your reach. Think of how many times you’ve seen recipes shared on facebook. When this is shared it can move to your friends full list of friends, and then their whole list of friends, and so on. Ideally everything we write will become a viral sensation, but even if your content only reaches a few new people each time, isn’t that worth it? The answer is a solid YES. Content marketing allows you to have a “Know, Like, and Trust” factor with your audience. This allows your audience to feel connected to your or like they know you. If you’ve ever followed a celebrity on twitter and you feel like you could be friends with them in real life, you get it, because you feel like you know who they are. Content, like interviews for the press, or even roles they play make you feel that connection and get you on “their team,” or liking them. Then there’s the trust side. Do I feel like this person has my best interest at heart or do I feel like they’re just pushers of a product? We all know that person who is always selling their thing. We might know them and like them, but we do trust that they are looking out for us? No, because they are skipping the first two steps to be invited into our world. A question I’m often asked is: Can’t I just post on social media? Well, no. While social media provides a vehicle you and others can use to share your content, and you can certainly use it to repurpose your content, it should not be the primary home for your content. Why? It is rented land. If you’re only creating content on Facebook, you’re leaving your business in the hands of a strange, fickle digital landlord who can choose to censor your posts, ban you from the platform, change the entire format of the site, or just wake up and decide he’s done with this and burn the whole thing down. Mix and vary your means of content delivery. When you create content on your own website, you can’t get shadow banned. How do I get started with content marketing? Choose an output format. Are you going to blog, podcast, or produce your content with a video channel? This is all up to you and what you like to do. Next, you need to start thinking of what your audience wants to know about? Think about who you want to talk to. Then, start writing or recording. Get out there and make that content. Just remember, provide value first. Providing great content makes selling easier. I know your time is limited and you want to spend it on things that are going to get you results. That is why I am so passionate about content marketing. I believe with all of my being that this works. It takes time, and there is a bit of a learning curve, but it is worth it. Content marketing gets you in front of more people. It builds you up as an authority that people can go to because you are the person to go to on that topic. Your content is there as long as your website is up. They will live on after you post them. People will continue to find them and you will continue to build your audience years later. Maybe starting a podcast has crossed your mind, but you’re still on the fence about if it’s worth it. But did you know there are only 1 million podcasts, vs. 500 million blogs and 50 million YouTube channels? Can you believe it’s been a full year since we launched the Confident Communications Podcast? Well, here we are! One year later and one year wiser. It seems like just yesterday I was sitting at Pat Flynn’s Power-Up Podcasting boot camp (Pat was also a guest on this podcast in episode 40) which played a major role in helping me get this podcast out into the world. I wanted to celebrate this year of helping people become better communicators by highlighting some of our top podcast episodes and a major takeaway from each of them. I chose episodes and guests that were not only top downloads but left my listeners with some quick and easy tips they could take away and start implementing immediately. Here’s what you can look forward to... [4:45] The JFK Jr. Plane Crash: A behind-the-scenes account from July 1999 Most of my most popular episodes feature guest interviews, but this unique solo episode got a lot of great feedback because the story is just so memorable to most people. It was released 20 years after JFK Jr.’s plane went missing, and gives listeners a behind-the-scenes perspective from insiders who were there - including me. [8:18] Episode 18: The Secret to Being a Great Speaker with Gina Razon One of the tips that Gina shares in this episode is literally something that I use every single time I get up in front of a room. It’s a way to help reset your brain back to calm because as we all know, anything can happen when you’re up there behind that podium. This episode is like a free session with a speech coach, so if you’re among the 75% of the public who has a fear of public speaking, you have to give it a listen. [11:36] Episode 22: How to Handle a Difficult Conversation with Lara Currie If you’ve ever had to deal with conflict in the workplace (and who hasn’t), you’re going to love these tips on how to slow down and remain calm that Lara teaches. We explore how to ask yourself the right questions before responding to someone, and she helps you be less emotional in your reactions. We also talk about triggers and how they affect the different genders, and how they are a visceral reaction that can show up physically. [14:14] Episode 30: How to Nail Your Next Media Interview with Brad Phillips Mr. Media Training himself, and author of The Media Training Bible: 101 Things You Absolutely, Positively Need To Know Before Your Next Interview, chats with me about the qualities that people need, and sometimes lack, to be engaging on camera. We talk about how oftentimes the people we work with are extremely engaging off-camera, but something switches once that little red light comes on. He gives us some remedies on how to still be YOU on camera and talks about the importance of striving for connection, not perfection. [18:37] Episode 26: How to Be a Great Spokesperson: A Reporter’s Perspective with Jeanne Meserve Jeanne and I discuss the state of the media as it is today and try to take some of the fear out of talking to the press. She goes through some specific flags to notice when someone is lying. There’s a shift in their demeanor, specifically in the eyes. If you see a person being shifty-eyed or have a glazed-over look, for example, they could be reciting something they’ve memorized. Truly fascinating stuff in this episode! [21:18] Episode 16: How to Spot a Liar Lying… who does it? Which gender does it more? What are they really lying about? I dig into all of the questions during the episode that garnered a lot of feedback and attention after its release. There actually is a difference in the types of lying that the different genders typically partake in, and I reveal a major give-away in how to tell when someone is lying by paying attention to their body language. This is going to be the first of many Where Are They Now? episodes, where I actually bring back a guest I've coached in a past episode. It's been about six months since I talked with Lisa in Episode 1019, who had some issues with taking her coaching practice online. She helps parents deal with troubled teens, and her site's called BratBusters.com. Today we're going to see what Lisa's been up to, what pains or problems I might be able to help her with next, and what's on the horizon. Let's get started! In this episode I mention my course, Power-Up Podcasting. This week I'm going to give you some lessons I learned from Speaking at We Are Podcast 2018 in Brisbane Australia. We also talk about the effectiveness of Audiograms. Monica Rivera from the You Wanna Do What? podcast gave me a great tip to download any episodes from Netflix to my iPad. George Hrab from the Geologic podcast (who gets to go to all sorts of cool stuff because of his podcast) gave me some heads up on a voltage converter. It's Rarely as Bad as It Seems When I heard the phrase "17 hours on a plane (along with some shorter flights for a total of 20 hours)" I thought it sounded like a horror story. I pictured some little punk behind me kicking my kidneys while their parents order another jack and coke from the flight attendant. In the end, even in coach, I was able to stretch my legs. I had two seats between my fellow passenger in my row and slept off and on. There were probably 3-5 small children who would occasionally cry, but it was not the nightmare I had envisioned. When I think of things that I have dreaded in the past, they are rarely as bad as you think you're going to be. Erode Your Comfort Zone I can be shy. When I go to a restaurant I'm not looking to think outside the box. When I was told that a large chunk of my schedule was planned for me, I got nervous. I didn't know where I was going, and except for a few people, I didn't know who I was with, what we were doing, and what I needed to be ready. We had assigned seats both days including assignments on who to go to lunch with. One day, Sean Desouza was going to cook authentic Indian food (I have never had Indian food). The Know Like a Trust Factor I talk about this all the time. When you create valuable content on a consistent basis, your audience trusts you and likes you. If you can share a bit of yourself, they get to know you. When people know, like, and trust you then you have influence. I know Ronsley Vaz from his "Should I Start a Podcast" show. We may have bumped into each other. I finally got to talk to him at Social Media Marketing World where I was speaking. He asked me if I would speak at We Are Podcast. I said yes on the spot. Who doesn't want to go to Australia? I saved up my pennies (and busted out a charge card) and made it happen. As I mentioned above, I was nervous. This was a new country, a new conference (for me), with new people. The first day was very good. I got to meet a lot of people. It was somewhat of the "warm up act" for the main event happening the next two days. Every speaker at this event was awesome. Every person I met was super friendly and shared my love of podcasting. The hotel I stayed at was great. By the end of day one, you could color me impressed, and I was ready for day two. By the end of day two, I believe I had met about 95% of the people there including Jules from Hong Kong Confidential. By the end of day two, where I once felt uncomfortable I now felt relaxed. The Speakers Retreat When I realized that I was going to be living with a bunch of people I had never met, previously this would have put me way outside my comfort zone. By this point, Ronsley had not let me down and I just went with the flow. Here again, it was not as bad as it seemed and was actually kind of fun (in the end we just slept here, and all the speakers hung out at a second house). I would start the day with some sort of healthy pancakes made from buckwheat and for toppings I had some sort of berries instead of maple syrup. Different? Yes. Delicious? Absolutely. The conversations were awesome, and the jokes and laughing were endless. More New Things The following day I had Indian food for the first time. As I was told I was a "Picky Eater" growing up, I assumed I would not like this. I loved it. Sean is launching a course in the future to show people how to cook these types of meals quickly. I'm in. I was scheduled for a session of Holographic Kinetics. I had no idea what it was, but I had heard that "it was a bit woo-woo." All I knew was Ronsley had selected a few people to do it, and I was one of them. I was not here to judge. I was all in. Holographic Kinetics is an advanced Aboriginal healing technique based on an ancient understanding of Lore, the universal laws that govern the creation, and the knowledge that everything in nature is alive and can be communicated with. Thoughts and emotions from difficult experiences in the past can become trapped in a person’s body to create realities. When experienced in the past they affect the present, which in turn affects the future. Once trapped, these energies are carried through time, negatively affecting people’s lives. These trapped energies interact with the external world, and following the law of attraction, like attracts like, they will attract to themselves similar negative experiences. More Info This was the first time I had ever tried it, and it did help me connect some dots from my past. If I'm a better, more confident person, I don't care how I got there. My New Australian Family For me, this was an experience that was truly hard to put into words. I rarely checked email, got almost no sleep, and just enjoyed the beauty of Australia, and the friendship of some truly great people. Jordan Harbinger is hilarious and his wife Jen is a walking firecracker of energy. Check out Jordan's show ( I love feedback Friday) and I went through his level 1 (free) of his Human Dynamics course. Jordan is all about learning and he shares some great insights in his course. Nicole Baldinu and Omar Zenhom are the team behind $100 MBA which I had heard of, and I had also heard of Webinar Ninja software. These two are the brains behind both those entities. I enjoyed talking books with them at breakfast one day and Omar's talk on building teams really opened my eyes Steph Taylor creates the podcast Socialite. She is always smiling and with her accent its a bit like learning about Instagram from Mary Poppins. I LOVED her presentation on having a plan for your podcast launch. Sean D'Souza - Sean is not a know it all, but yet, he seems to know everything (he is the man behind Psychotactics). His presentation on developing skills was very cool ( Energy + Confidence = Skill) and has me rethinking how I present things at the School of Podcasting. He has a podcast called Three Month Vacation. I can't wait to learn how to cook from this guy. Leanne Hughes was the Co-MC of the event and has a smile that will light up the room. She was also my hero as the volunteered to take myself, Ally, and Pat to the airport at six AM. I wish I had more time to pick her brain as she is all about making great presentations. Check out her podcast First Time Facilitator Byron Dempsey is another hero. I had plugged my iPad into to keep it as charged as possible and then forget to put it back in my book bag. Bryon was nice enough to ship it back to the States for me. Byron is a super talented videographer and helps people grow their brands with video. Laura Peterson is someone I kind of knew as I listen to her Copy that Pops podcast. She was the trooper who had to deal with a presentation clicker that did not want to participate. She is super funny and if you are in front of her, please have her to her "California Girl" imitation. If you are thinking of writing a book, she's your gal. Ange Henderson is a business consultant that is super friendly, outgoing, and was always there when we needed a food run. THANKS ANGE! She's worked with huge companies like Netflix and I could go on, but just know she's done it all. Travis Chappell dropped knowledge bombs during his presentation on how to follow up without being a pest. He's one of those guys that doesn't say much, but when he does it is hilarious. Carl Taylor seemed like a nice guy and was in a pretty good mood considering he had just had his wisdom teeth pulled. This mild-mannered guy had sold three businesses and wrote a #1 business book by the age of 25. Every time I hear the phrase Koala Bear, I will think of Carl who let me know Koala's are not bears. They are marsupials. Allison Melody is someone I had met at other conferences, but just getting to chill with people builds that relationship deeper. Her presentation on monetizing you podcast had some new strategies I had not heard of. Check out her Food Heals Podcast. Shannon Morrison is the head of operations at Amplify Media and the founder of Mighty Social World. A super nice guy, and always willing to help with anything and everything. Jason Malouin is nuts. He has a great laugh and was the co-MC of the event. Jason was a great American to Aussie translator and stopped me from getting a sunburn that would've been on a whole new level. If you're in Australia and need a portrait photographer, he's your dude. Check out his Communicator podcast. Harry Duran and Natalie Jenkins are my partners in crime at many conferences. They both make me laugh, and occasionally snort. I love them both very much. You know Harry from Podcast Junkies, and Natalie is often taking head shots at events you attend. If she can make me look good, she can make you look amazing. When I found out I was going into the Hall of Fame, Natalie was one of the first people I called to see if she would photograph it. James Cridland is another person who has been on the show and his the host of the Podnews podcast (And newsletter which has more stories). James was the one who said, "I know a place where you can pet Koala's and Kangaroos" for which I will be eternally grateful. Check him out at www.podnews.net Pat Flynn - I've had Pat on my show. I bump into him all the time at events, but never really got a chance to hang. Pat Flynn (much like Harry and Natalie) makes me laugh a lot. I'm here to tell you the guy is hilarious. He is super chill, and he turned the groups on to some great games such as Psyche! and SpaceTeam. Both games are a lot of fun. He has Smart Passive Income, his book Will it Fly is a MUST READ, his Smart Podcast Player, and he is now teaching people how to podcast with his Power Up Podcasting. Shayde Furlong was the "Audio Engineer" for the whole week, and was cool enough to BRING A GUITAR! I enjoyed all out talks, super nice guy. Ronsley Vaz - The man behind the whole thing. The man behind Amplify media. If I am the Gandalf of podcasting, you are the Jared Easley of Australia. EVERYBODY KNOWS YOU. Check out his Content Amplifier it's amazing (and it's free) as well as his podcast "Should I start a podcast" at http://wearepodcast.com/shouldistartapodcast/ Rochelle Fernandes is always happy. How do you do that? Anytime we needed something, there she was. Amazing. Katherine Maslen of Brisbane Natural Health - Thanks for sharing your team. My name is LJ Malberg and I am the Compassionate Muse. I am an organizational design consultant, trainer and executive leadership coach and CEO of The Reliance Company. I believe that leading with compassion creates the most successful work environments and contributes both to the welfare of the individual and continued growth to the organization's bottom line. There are countless studies that prove that happy workers are far more productive, inclusive contributors to their companies than their unhappy counterparts, and that these positive behaviors spill over affecting home and family life as well. We live in a precarious time where compassion is needed now more than ever, and my work is to spark change in the way organizations and individuals work together. P.S., Acknowledgements The host wishes to take this rare launch day opportunity to thank and acknowledge the following people and services that have made this day possible. To Stacey who deals with the piles of books, comics and boom mic stands in our tiny Brighton apartment. To LJ, who is more than the spirit of #ITTIGPOD, more like direct inspiration. To our first sponsor, MMMMAVEN, a place where creativity blooms. To Dan Benjamin at fireside.fm for making a sensible and professional podcasting CMS that works better than I could have imagined. And to you, the listener if you are family, friend or perhaps foe, please spread the word on this show! Special Guest: LJ Malberg, the Compassionate Muse/The Reliance Company.

Episode 5 Growth Strategies Welcome back to the DAC Podcast, I am thrilled that you are here and that you are wanting to grow your business. In this episode we are talking about growth strategies with our current products and new products. You probably already know this just by running a small business, but I always find if something is broken into pieces and categorized that I understand it better and can see where I am headed next. But before we get into the content, I want to let you know something that I am really excited about. I’ve had a lot of downloads for this podcast, which is amazing, but I feel like I haven’t gotten to connect with you yet. If you go to my website at lydiagmiller.com and on the right is a join our community button. You can sign up there and get access to a private FaceBook group where we can discuss things on the podcast, and a lot more. I have lots of ideas on how I can give more content there. So if you would, please join! I’d love to have you. Now, let’s get into the content! We are going to break this down into two pools of products or services. Current product and new products and we will start with current products. Current Products/Services If you already have something that you’re selling, then you are probably going to have an easier time with this. Creating new products is a lot harder. Don’t give up on your current product if it’s not doing super well. You may just need to tweak it a little for it to be a star product. If you’re trying to get more sales for your current product you can sell more to your current clients. They already like what you’re doing with your product! I run a bookkeeping business, and the next step for a lot of my clients would be for me to do their tax return or to take over more of their bookkeeping. For me, this is not something that I want to do right now. I don’t have the right credentials to do tax returns, and I am looking to get new bookkeeping clients, because the ones that I have don’t need any more services. Another idea for a bookkeeping client would be to add on payroll services, or do their 1099s if you already aren’t, or also handle their hr. Find another problem that they are having in their business and solve it for them. That could be a way that you sell more to your current clients. Another way to sell more current products would be to sell your current products to new customers. New customers can be expensive to acquire. There is always a cost to educate, remind, and motivate a client to become a client of yours, but it is something that can be done. You want to see if you can expand the appeal of your product, or maybe find a new place to sell your product. Maybe you have an affiliate program where someone else promotes your product for a commission, or you find someone to co-brand with. Remember, if the product or service that you have isn’t selling as much as you want it to, the ideal thing is not always to make a new product. That can be really tempting, especially since we have a grass is always greener mindset sometimes. But I want you to try some of those strategies with your current product first before creating something new. Now we are going to talk about creating new products/services for your business. Any time you make something new, you want to know the investment it will take to get there, what you want your return to be and how it fits into your business model. This podcast is a great example of that! I decided last year that I wanted to do this podcast and share this content. But I was having problems with the technical side of it all. I finally had to make a investment into an online course to walk me through step by step how to create it and get it working seamlessly. I used Pat Flynn’s Power UP Podcasting course if anyone is wondering or interested. I would recommend it 100%. You can also got to the resources page on my website to find the link for it. So, new products. First, you could create a new product for the audience that you already have. This seems like the most logical first step. The people who buy from you already know like and trust you and if you are solving a problem for them, they’re more likely to buy from you. This could be a product line extension or a premium version of what you already have. The second way is through diversification. This is the hardest thing to do. It would be like me going from offering bookkeeping services to offering photography as well. Very, very different fields with different customer bases and different challenges. I wouldn’t recommend doing this. Make sure that the ideas you have don’t fall under this category, because you will probably loose time and money on this and become very frustrated, just my guess. Big corporations have tried this, and unless you hire someone to run that part of their business who has done it before, it’s not going to work. Two more ways that you can grow using new products are vertical and horizontal integration. So vertical integration is when you own businesses in the chain of what you’re doing. So, let’s say you create hand painted wooden signs. Right now you’re buying paint and wood pre-sanded and having a professional seal your signs. Vertical integration is when you buy what you need to sand the signs, buy wood wholesale and buy the equipment to put a seal on the signs. It can save you money, but may cost you some time if you’re not hiring someone else to do it. If you use horizontal integration, you would buy out all of the hand painted wooden sign companies. So really, that is expensive. For my bookkeeping business, that would be like me supporting QuickBooks Online, and Xero and FreshBooks. You’d have larger audience to appeal to, but you would have to know a lot more and have more time on your hands. I want you to think through the new ideas that you having and see where these ideas fit. If you run a business and are looking to expand, try to find something in the current products/services that you can offer to the audience that you already have. At least test it there and see if your target audience is interested in it. I would stay away from entering an entirely new industry and starting completely from scratch. This isn’t like adding a podcast to talk about what you’re already doing, it would be like me adding a jewelry line to my bookkeeping business. Totally different industries! This episode is a milestone for the show because we have reached episode number 10! I appreciate each of you for being on this journey with me, and I'm also so grateful for the opportunity to chat with the guests that have so generously shared their time and knowledge with us over these first 10 episodes. Today's guest is Christa Biegler, who I met through our podcasting community, Power Up Podcasting, created by our mentor, and one of my favorite podcasters of all time, Pat Flynn. Christa and I immediately hit it off, when we noticed common interests in building health with food as medicine, geeking out on food intolerances and lab testing, and also, musings about the importance of mindset. Youll find in this interview, great examples of those amazing coincidences and synchronicities that show up in life. As Christa likes to say, there are no coincidences, and things often happen for a reason. In this interview, Christa also shares a bit about her health journey and how she started helping clients rebuild health, even through they were considered complex or incurable cases. Here's Christa's official bio: she is an integrative dietitian nutritionist that specializes in food sensitivities and reversing symptoms of IBS, migraines, fibromyalgia, and autoimmune issues. She loves tough cases, and is host of The Less Stressed Life podcast. Here's a fun fact: she coordinates the local unicycle club with her husband and 3 kiddos! Thanks for listening! ProBlogger Podcast: Blog Tips to Help You Make Money Blogging
Advice from Pat Flynn on How to Create a Successful Podcast Today I have a treat for anyone who has ever considered starting a podcast (or already has one), because I’ve just finished a Skype call with Pat Flynn about the art of podcasting. As I’ve mentioned in the past, Pat’s teaching on podcasting is the number one thing that helped me as I was starting the ProBlogger podcast two years ago. If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn't have started at all. And so I was very excited when he launched his Power-Up Podcasting course earlier this year, because I knew it would help many more Pre-Podcasters get into this amazing medium. Pat spoke at our Aussie ProBlogger events earlier in the year (he'll also be speaking at our Dallas event in October), and during that event we talked about how often I heard ProBlogger readers say things like "I really should start a podcast". It’s a statement I hear all the time. But it's almost always followed up with something like "But I don’t know where to begin"’ or "But I don’t have the right gear" or "But it all seems so overwhelming". So I asked Pat if he’d be willing to come on the show and help those in our audience interested in podcasting take their first steps. Today we jumped on Skype, and I put a lot of your questions and challenges to him in this interview. Not only that, Pat has also opened up his Power-Up Podcasting course exclusively for ProBlogger listeners. His course opened for just a week in July when a couple of hundred students signed up, but then he shut the doors so he could concentrate on serving that first intake of students. So this is pretty special. He’s opening it back up for only one week, and only for ProBlogger readers and listeners. You can see what it’s all about over at ProBlogger.com/powerup. Whether you enroll in the course or not, I encourage you to stay tuned to today’s interview. In it Pat and I talk about A tip for growing your podcast audience through Facebook Groups (it’ll help you grow your blog too) What two of his most successful podcast episodes have been What microphones he recommends if you’re on different budgets Working out which format of podcast is right for you Interviewing techniques to help you get conversations flowing Surfacing stories in those you interview Editing podcasts The pros and cons of seasons vs ongoing episodes, How to make your episodes sound more alive and energetic Much much more. Pat is incredibly generous with his advice in this episode. So whether you take his course or not, you’ll get a lot of inspiration and ideas from staying with us. Again, if you’re interested in checking out the Power-Up Podcasting course head to problogger.com/powerup where for the next seven days you can enroll. If you’re listening after that seven-day period there will be an option to join his waitlist until the next time he opens the doors.
