In March I had the pleasure of spending time at Cornwall Alternative School in Regina Saskatchewan. There I met an incredibly passionate and caring staff along with the funny, smart, and charming students. Cornwall Alternative School brings in youth from every corner of the city that are slipping through the cracks in public, Catholic and private schools. Its whole purpose is to support youth with compassion and empathy that would otherwise likely dropout and get lost in the abyss with societies under privileged. These youth deal with things like addiction, trauma, mental illness and poor home lives. The school relies on donations and partial funding from the local government to stay operational. In this episode I speak with the principal, Bryan Rice and school counsellor Jay Kayseas to get a better idea of how the school started, obstacles a school like this runs into, what some of the needs of their students are and the future hopes for the school. For this week's episode of the Journal with Jenny Podcast, Jenny was lucky enough to speak with Pam Bustin. Pam is a successful author who has used journaling in her own life personally and to further her writing career. In this episode, we discussed how Pam uses different types of journals as part of her daily ritual to create success in all areas of her life. Pam began using journals at a young age as a way to process the things that were going on in her life that she was not comfortable talking about with anyone else. This was an incredibly brave thing to do, and it ultimately helped shape who she is today. In our conversation, we discussed how act journaling and getting thoughts and feelings out on the page can be used as a tool for healing and growth. These days, Pam still uses journals but for different purposes than before. She now has three main types of journals that she uses regularly: The Scribble, where she scribbles each morning by hand; an Interstitial Journal where she tracks her daily work doings; and a Process Journal where she records what's going on in her current writing project and how she is feeling about it. These journals have become invaluable tools for Pam in achieving success both professionally and personally. Listen now for several journaling ideas and inspiration from Pam. You won't want to miss this episode! Access a copy of Pam's Process Journal here: https://pambustin.com/process-journal-template-2/ Pam Bustin is a writer, performer, story-tender, and the award-winning author of the novel Mostly Happy, the stage plays Saddles in the Rain, The Passage of Georgia O'Keefe and barefoot, and the CBC Radio dramas Coffee in Lloyd, The White Car Project, and Talking with the Dead. She was born in Regina Saskatchewan and raised in a host of small towns across the prairies. For the last ten years, she's lived mostly in Chapleau Ontario with a lovely man and 10,001 books. She believes that stories save lives. That they teach us how to survive this earth walk and whatever comes next. She sees her calling as two-fold, to do her own work as an artist and to honor and support the genius of each writer she meets. Can you remember the last time you avoided having a conversation because the perceived stakes were high? I know I can. The challenge is we likely won't go back to that conversation, will we? And if left unattended and dealt with it creates trust issues, resentment and frustration. As men, our greatest Achilles heal is talking about things that are important to us. These are crucial conversations and when we learn how to have them we actually raise the level we show up as a husband, a father and a leader. Tamara Kerr is my guest on the latest edition of The Revolutionary Man Podcast. In Tamara's consulting work, she provides training and coaching solutions that target unwritten, deep-seated sources of human behaviour that foster accountability, spur open communication and improve engagement in all aspects of her client's lives. In this episode, we discuss... What makes a conversation crucial? the importance of psychological safety How familiarity causes issues Why men default to silence How to have crucial conversations at home and at work mistakes we make when we get into crucial conversations and more Be sure to hit like and subscribe to stay up on the latest information. Steve Mazur is a humble rockstar. He's the guitarist of one of the biggest bands to ever come out of Canada: Our Lady Peace. OLP's been around for close to 30 years and 4 Juno Awards and 10 MMVA's later, they are still going. To add to their legacy, they remain one of top-selling Canadian bands/artists of all-time.Steve himself is a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston but thankfully, he's not a Boston Bruins fan. He joined the band in 2001 and has been rocking ever since.Steve talks about the pressures of being an opening band compared to being a headlining band, he talks about touring with Guns N Roses as well as what inspires him in his everyday life and much more!"Questions with Deevo" is available on all podcast apps, subscribe to find out who will be on next, episodes come out every Monday.
Dr. Brett Salkeld is the Archdiocesan Theologian for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Regina Saskatchewan and the author of "Transubstantiation: Theology, History and Christian Unity". You might assume that this is simply a book about a historical theological dispute, and it is, but I think this book is a clear presentation of the history of the conflict surrounding our understanding of the word "God". We use the word "God" as if we know what we're talking about, or that we all mean the same thing when we say the word. I'm convinced we don't and I believe this conflict is at the heart of the great falling away of the church in the West. Brett and I get into this along with a lot of the issues I deal with on this channel. Your hosts, Marie-Claude, Terry, and Marc (video of show at bottom) ListenEN_The_Link-20190809-WEE15 Anniversary of the atomic bomb attacks to end WWII In this Aug. 9, 1945 file photo, a mushroom cloud rises moments after the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, southern Japan. On two days in August 1945, U.S. planes dropped two atomic bombs, one on Hiroshima, one on Nagasaki, the first and only time nuclear weapons have been used. Their destructive power was unprecedented, incinerating buildings and people, and leaving lifelong scars on survivors, not just physical but also psychological, and on the cities themselves. Days later, the Second World War was over. (The Associated Press) It was the first, and luckily so far, the only use of the terrible destructive power of atomic weapons. In August 6th and 9th of 1945, the U.S dropped two atomic bombs, one on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, another on Nagasaki. The death toll for Hiroshima was estimated at around 140,000, for Nagasaki around 80.000. Terry spoke with Paul Hannon, executive director of Mines Action Canada, a group dedicated to working against "indiscriminate weapons". Anti-social behaviour as internet "pranks". shared responsibility Screen capture shows the moment someone in a group throws coffee at Vaviya Falgun in an apparent social media "prank". Internet viewers didn't find the prank funny and Regina police are investigating (via CBC) A recent internet so-called "prank" in Regina Saskatchewan didn't quite turn out the way the people involved probably expected. The person who filmed the event and posted it online did not get the "likes" he hoped for and instead was criticised for the incident. He tried to defend himself saying he wasn't the one who threw the coffee so why are people blaming him? Marc spoke with Gord Pennycook (Ph.D) is an assistant professor of behavioural science at the University of Regina. He says the person filming bears as much responsibility for any bad behaviour as the person committing the act. How dinosaurs grew feathers to become birds: Sex is in the air A flightless dinosaur called Similicaudipteryx uses its feathers in a mating display. U of A researchers looked at how such displays may have helped dinosaurs evolve feathers that eventually allowed them to fly. (Illustration: Sydney Mohr) It's now widely accepted that today's birds evolved from dinosaurs, but how did we get from one to the other. We now know that some early dinosaurs developed preliminary hair-like feathers for warmth, but from there to the complex feather design of modern birds is far too big a leap to be explained by evolution, unless there's a middle step. That middle step according to a new study was develop the feathers into more complex structures for mating displays, i.e., for sex. Marc spoke to Scott Persons (PhD) who was lead author on the study while at the University of Alberta World record poutine Canada has given the world the invention of "poutine", a heart-stopping mix of gravy, cheese and fries. A World Record batch was made this month in a Quebec town. (Radio-Canada) Marie-Claude talks about the Canadian invention of poutine, with the story and video of the recent batch made to beat the previous world record. The new record set this month was, 3,000kgs. She also ordered a sample to be brought into the studio. Reports are none of our arteries were immediately clogged! Dennis “Super Sobby” Sobchuk was a dynamic junior hockey star, who went on to achieve success in the World Hockey Association. Sobby is still a hockey legend in Regina Saskatchewan, where he starred with the junior Pats in the early 1970s. He played 200 games from 1971 to 1974, registering 191 goals and 225 assists. On a team that included the likes of Clark Gillies and Gregg Joly, he was named the most valuable player of the 1974 Memorial Cup. He later had his number #14 retired and in 2018 he and Guy Lafleur were chosen as honorary captains of the MasterCard 100th edition of the Memorial Cup event. His junior career was so impressive that he became the first player to sign with a professional hockey team before leaving major-junior hockey. Dennis signed a 10-year, $1-million contract with the WHA's Cincinnati Stingers in 1973. He played the 1973-74 season with the Pats and was loaned to the Phoenix Roadrunners for the 1974-75 season because the Stingers didn't have an arena in which to play. Dennis was the centerpiece of the Stingers franchise, notching 44 goals and 96 points in 1976-77 while earning a spot in the 1977 WHA All Star Game. Three major shoulder injuries would curtail his career, but did not diminish his legend. After playing in the 1979 Avco Cup finals with Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers, Dennis has a brief NHL stint in Detroit before retiring in 1982. You'll enjoy Dennis' recollections of a colorful and unforgettable ride in a career that could only have happened in the 1970s. This week was our second Grand Prix of Figure Skating competition. This time in Regina Saskatchewan, Skate Canada International featured a number of showdowns with some very high highs and some very low lows. Our frustration in the Canadian broadcast network responsible is palpable, but our excitement for the season ahead has not been tempered (too much). This is a big one, so settle in.
