Brains! Brains! This week in “yes we know it's not a roguelike”, we venture into the heart of Kentucky for some country-fried human flesh with Project Zomboid. The zeds have spread and you have one goal: survive as long as possible. Do you loot the local school for backpacks and safety scissors, or the police station for pistols and shotguns? Do you dare risk alerting the manic hordes with your car as you break windows in your desperate search for prescription painkillers? …in the game, I mean… allegedly, Your Honor… Custom RSS Apple Podcasts Spotify YouTube Music Transcript 1:34 - Game stats 4:16 - One sentence description 5:50 - Roguelike arugments from the Zomboid community 12:00 - Actual gameplay 14:22 - Zombies as Environmental Hazard vs. Villain 27:47 - Tutorial Design & Quality Praise 30:43 - Character Creation, Occupations & Traits 32:30 - Map Size, Starting Location & Open World Scope 36:00 - Lack of Win Condition & Sandbox Design 49:19 - Combat Mechanics, Difficulty & Stealth 1:00:01 - Defining a Winning Run & End-Game Goals 1:20:00 - Rankings & final thoughts 1:38:32 - Similar games & show wind-down Next episode: Hoplite Contact us at grogpodzone@gmail.com! https://grogpod.zone Intro music: Jimmy Greene - Last Summer Outro music: Project Zomboid OST - Maybe We Can Win This

From sleeping on office couches and playing Halo 2 before anyone else, to Don King promos, 50 Cent interviews and the early days of podcasting when you had to manually download episodes onto an MP3 player, they share wild behind-the-scenes stories from the golden age of online gaming media.

Featuring: Ace, Ammosart, Ashgar, Belghast, Kodra, and Thalen Good Morning Folks! We are down a Tam this week and had some topics that were sitting on our list for a bit. We start off talking about the official end of Anthem and the Mark Darrah video that effectively provides an autopsy for the game. Loosely related, we talk about the impending death of New World in January 2027. This forces us down the path of talking about what the heck even makes an MMO anymore, and how we largely agree that it requires random interaction with other players to count. We decided that the lobby-based games are PSOLikes since the first game we can remember that was that way was Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast. From there, we talk a bit about Shape of Dream,s another Roguelike that Ash and Kodra have been playing. Bel shares his thoughts on Legacy of Phrecia 2.0 in Path of Exile, and Kodra shares his endgame thoughts about Path of Exile II. We wrap the show up talking about the impending patch in Guild Wars 2 that is going to add quickplay for raids and the new Fashion Plates adjacent system. Topics Discussed: Anthem is Offline New World will soon Die What Makes an MMORPG PSOLikes Shape of Dreams Path of Exile Legacy of Phrecia 2.0 Path of Exile 2 - Endgame Thoughts Guild Wars 2 Fashion Plates

The NPCs - Video Game Commentary, Video Game News, And More!
Welcome to the long-awaited return of The NPCs, where we're back to discuss video game news, video game insights, provide commentary, and oh so much more.In our absence, a lot of things have happened in the video game universe: Roguelike's have taken over the Steam charts, Elden Ring got a multiplayer game, Fortnite still exists, and we still don't have Grand Theft Auto 6…But one thing has been on our minds for at least half of the year: have we finally reached the end of the console wars? Microsoft has doubled down on a marketing campaign where “Everything is an Xbox,” making it so phones, TVs, even your smart fridge can play Xbox games without needing an Xbox at all. In tandem, we also saw bridges built with core first-party titles like Forza, Gears of War, and even Halo showing up on the PlayStation 5. With the possibility of Nintendo also receiving similar treatment, has Microsoft finally bowed out of the console race? Do we even need consoles anymore given more of a transition to PC-based architecture? Let's talk about it in our great return episode: The Console Wars Concludes…Intro: Run by J+1Post-Break Intro: Getaway by J+1Outro: Haunt by J+1

Today on the 5: Roguelites are a genre of video game that I have not historically had much interest in. I've tried a few, and whiler I see the appeal of the games, none have really connected with me. That might change in a big way when Carmageddon: Rogue Shift comes out!

It seems like we are maybe getting a Breach expansion league, with a bunch of quality of life changes. From there, we dive into the topic that got bumped from last week about how there are so many good games… that it makes it really hard to play less-than-excellent games anymore. This week on The Inner Gamer, Brett and Jason share their first impressions of Ghost of Yōtei — the long-awaited follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima. You now play as Atsu, a warrior on a brutal quest for revenge against the Yōtei Six who murdered her family. The tone is darker, the world more open, and the storytelling more grounded. It's a different kind of Ghost game, but so far, we're loving the shift in direction.Brett also dives into the full 1.0 release of Hades II on the Switch 2. This sequel from Supergiant Games expands everything fans loved about the original — deeper combat, gorgeous art, and another gripping mythic story. If you're a roguelike fan, this is a must-play; if you're not, its repetition may still test your patience. Finally, we break down some major industry news. With rising game and console prices — including another Game Pass increase — gaming is getting more expensive than ever. And in a stunning move, Electronic Arts was acquired by Saudi Arabia for $55 billion, the largest deal in gaming history. We discuss what this could mean for players, studios, and the future of the industry as costs climb higher than ever.Show Notes:1:05 - Housekeeping3:09 - Ghost of Yōtei First Look: Hunting the Yōtei Six46:26 - Hades 2 First Look: Is It Worth the Loop?1:08:36 - Console Gaming Is Too Expensive — The Beginning of the End?1:37:25 - Inside the $55B EA Takeover — Risks, Opportunities, and What's Next1:59:37 - Upcoming Video Game Releases Become a part of the conversation!
