Gendering the Hadith Tradition: Recentering the Authority of Aisha, Mother of the Believers (Oxford UP, 2024) presents for the first time a partial translation and study of Imam Badr al-Din al-Zarkashi's work, al-Ijaba li-Iradi ma Istadraktahu Aisha Ala al-Sahabah-"The Corrective: Aisha's Rectification of the Companions. "It critically analyses from the perspective of hadith criticism a number of sections presenting Aisha's refutations and corrections of key Companions including, Umar b. al-Khattab, Abdullah b. Abbas, Zayd b. Thabit, and Abu Hurayra, applying classical hadith methodology to the scrutiny of narrators by way of impugnment and validation (al-jarh wa al-tadil) in an effort to re-construct and re-present Aisha as a central authority in Islamic knowledge production. This work constitutes a major rethinking of the Muslim hadith and jurisprudential traditions by evaluating how Aisha responded to hadiths that were circulating and being ascribed, often incorrectly, as authoritative statements of the Prophet Muhammad. From her critique of overwhelmingly male Companions of the Prophet, the study elicits a methodology for hadith criticism which is sure to challenge classical approaches. Sofia Rehman unearths the scholarly acumen of this great female Companion and mother of the believers, in her discussion of several legal positions which Aisha held in contradistinction to many of the male authorities among the Companions. This interdisciplinary study serves as a model for how the voice of Aisha may be given renewed life and significance in the way it re-centres her traditions and thinking. A crucial aspect is its contributing to expanding the horizons of multiple Islamic disciplines. A major contribution to the study of hadith lies in the development of an emergent methodology of Aisha in the scrutiny of the actual statements (matn) of traditions, not just the chains of transmission (isnad). The contributions of this study to the development of the Muslim legal tradition (fiqh) also lies in a framework that emerges from this research based on the pattern of how Aisha approaches juridical matters. The implications for this are many, especially regarding women and their spiritual and daily life and practice.“ Sofia Rehman is an independent scholar of Islam, trained both traditionally in Syria and Turkey, and in Western academia, receiving her PhD from the University of Leeds. She advocates bridging the gap between scholarship on Islam and the Muslim community, setting up critical reading groups with global reach to facilitate learning and empowerment. She is a contributor to Mapping Faith: Theologies of Migration, edited by Lia Shimada, Cut from the Same Cloth?, edited by Sabeena Akhtar and Violent Phenomena: 21 Essays on Translation, edited by Kavita Bhanot and Jeremy Tiang. She is author of A Treasury of Aisha Bint Abu Bakr. Tugrul Mende holds an M.A in Arabic Studies. He is based in Berlin as a project coordinator and independent researcher.

This is the third episode of a special 4-part takeover with cast & creatives from Hulu's new musical series UP HERE. Make sure to stream the entire 21 song UP HERE soundtrack everywhere you find your music. Director Tommy Kail and choreographer Sonya Tayeh have teamed up for the first time in Hulu's new rom-com musical, “Up Here”. Not wanting to stick to just one medium, Sonya talks about being an expansive artist and following wherever her passion takes her. Tommy also shares his deal with Disney, putting a musical on mainstream TV and how Kirsten and Bobby's ability to make musical comedy resonated with him. While Sonya has done numerous projects and won awards already, the choreographer shares open up about dealing with imposter syndrome, calling it "big, old, scary monsters" and why she loves physicalizing them. Working as the director and choreographer for "Up Here", both Tommy and Sonya share how they operate, including collaborating with other creatives and shooting with at least two cameras at all times. Sonya reflects more on her love for collaborating, trying out all the options, starting a conversation and hearing what her collaborators have to say. Tommy, on the other hand, speaks about consciously surrounding himself with talented people that make him a better person. With Sonya and Tommy's love for collaborating, it's no surprise that the two found each other to create something beautiful. Sonya Tayeh is a TONY Award-winning choreographer and director. She has choreographed for renowned artists, including Madonna, Miley Cyrus and Florence and the Machine. She's been nominated twice for Emmy Awards for her work on So You Think You Can Dance, and won the Lucille Lortel and Obie Awards for “Outstanding Choreography” for her work on David Henry Hwang's dance-play “Kung Fu”, for which she also received a Drama Desk nomination. She made her Broadway debut as the choreographer for the hit show, “Moulin Rouge the Musical” and worked on the production of “Sing Street”. Sonya has recently joined the creative team for the upcoming production of "Gatsby" and “The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window” and is gearing up for the world premiere of “Is It Thursday Yet?”, a play that she directed, co-choreographed and co-conceived. Tommy Kail is a theatre director known for directing the Off-Broadway and Broadway productions of Lin-Manuel Miranda's musicals “In the Heights” and “Hamilton” for which he won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Direction of Musical. His other credits include “Lombardi”, “Magic/Bird”, “Randy Newman's Faust and The Wiz”, “Broke-ology”, “When I Come to Die”, “Family Furniture”, and “The Tutors” among others. Tommy was awarded the Kennedy Center Honor in 2018 and won a Special Tony Award in 2021 for “Freestyle Love Supreme”. This episode centres around the perspectives of Muslim women in surgery, and in particular the challenges faced by hijab-wearing Muslim women in both theatre environments and in their trusts. Featuring a panel led by core surgical trainee Azra Khatun, along with colorectal consultant and RCS Council Member Nuha Yassin, vascular registrar Nina Al-Saadi and paediatric registrar Farah Roslan, this podcast aims to show a range of experiences that hijab-wearing women face in the surgical world, while offering guidance and encouragement to those coming through medical school and aspiring to a career in surgery. As Azra says in a recent RCS Bulletin article on her work on the Surgical Scarf initiative: 'Research demonstrates that the lack of consideration for religious dress codes in the operating theatre has compromised access to training and surgical career pathways for a growing number of Muslim women surgeons and medical students. Many women were left feeling anxious and bullied, subsequently opting for alternative specialties. During a recent meeting of the British Islamic Medical Association's dress code group, it became clear that each of us from different UK hospitals shared similar experiences of not being able to wear our headscarf in theatre. Many of us were being told to leave the theatre and to wear a theatre cap while some reported that surgery could not be a career option because of this.' The African diaspora is full of various cultures from all around the world. Oftentimes those differences result in arguments causing a divide between Africans, Caribbeans, and African/Black Americans. Whether it may be explaining that African Americans have culture, if not one of the most imitated cultures in the world. Or Africans and Carribeans speaking about being accepted more as adults and having the most authentic roots. What lessons can be learned from the war in Ukraine when tackling the cross-strait crisis? In this special episode of Bridging the Oceans, Veerle speaks with Yuichi Hosoya of Keio University, Tokyo about the parallels between the war in Ukraine and the current standoff over Taiwan, and the extent to which these comparisons are valid. They examine escalation scenarios across the Taiwan Strait, in light of Russia's pattern of behaviour before invading Ukraine. And they discuss what role Japan could play in the maintenance of peace and stability in the region, as well as which key networks and strategic alliances Japan will be relying on.

Today, I'm talking with Chrysta Bilton about her new book and the discovery of her 35 (and counting) siblings! Chrysta is an American author who lives in Los Angeles, CA, with her husband and two children. Chrysta's new memoir, Normal Family, details her nontraditional upbringing and how her father was one of the most prolific sperm donors of the California cryobank in the 80s. Listen in as Chrysta talks about family reunions, nature versus nurture, and how we can learn and grow from our parents' trauma. Also hear a short story based on Chrysta's life from Michael Kobzik. IN THIS EPISODE: [03:02] Chrysta's discovery of her many siblings [08:15] Chrysta's upbringing and meeting and building relationships with her half-siblings [13:29] Family reunion and interviewing her family for her book [18:45] Writing prompt and further discussion about her book, Normal Family [20:16] Short story: “Cut from the Same Cloth” KEY TAKEAWAYS: Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction. Sperm donation was and continues to be unregulated. Normal Family is an effort to try to understand our parents' traumas as a way to gain acceptance of their choices. This often informs the way in which we structure our own families and how we break free from generational issues. We're starting to remember how fun playoff basketball is, aren't we?!! Patrick breaks down the Golden State Warriors' wildly entertaining 126-106 Game 2 win over the Denver Nuggets at Chase Center. Specifically, he talks Jordan Poole being cut from the same cloth as Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Andre Iguodala; Steph coming off the bench feasting on backups and turbo-boosting the offense; that vintage Warriors 3rd quarter blitz; Andrew Wiggins blending perfectly into the flow on offense and defense, the surprising mediocrity of Aaron Gordan; and the Warriors' need to lean on their veterans to steal Game 3 in Denver to really put this series away. This week I discuss (maybe rant a little) about dealing with difficult agents. I also talk about the importance of choosing the right agent whether you are buying or selling a house.
We tackle the age old question of why Goofy can speak but not Pluto (Mickey's Dog). Yes it is important, We are aware.Lots of Love Island that last half. OOPS.
We are so excited to have Carl on the show today. Carl is a client here at Rock, and he is celebrating his 90 days of being sober. In fact, he says that he hasn't been alcohol free for 90 days since he was 16 years old. Carl has given back and contributed to our community and this conversation shows his commitment to sobriety and service. One of the interesting things about recovery is the diversity of people. People with different backgrounds, jobs, economic experiences, and different ages all coming together to battle the same problem. We talk about how being open and listening can broaden your attitude and actually help you learn about yourself as you learn about others and find common ground in the recovery community. Show Notes: [04:02] As a kid, Carl stole alcohol from his parents. [04:19] In high school, it was practically required that he party and be part of the in crowd. [04:39] His dad was also a highly functioning alcoholic. In the 70s, drinking was common and it was accepted. [04:50] Eventually, his social drinking became more regular. [08:28] Ben grew up where there wasn't a lot of alcohol, so he wanted to be part of the normal group and that's why he went and drank and partied. [10:06] Alcohol followed Carl through college. He also played sports which allowed him a regimen that got him through college. [11:26] In the business world, everything around you is about doing more and doing better. You are looking at the end result, and drinking becomes part of your environment. [12:57] After his 30s, drinking became an everyday thing for Carl. [14:32] We can all do a holiday of not drinking, it's a rest of the life of not drinking that's more challenging. [16:17] There is a diversity of people at the Rock Treatment Center. They have a gentleman who has studied human genomes. They have a kid who shot dope off the streets. A homeless guy. A stock market guy who's the number one salesman. There is a diversity of class and a diversity of age. [19:35] Carl has learned a lot by being around a diverse group of people who have the same problem as him. It's very humbling and enlightening. He finds the service aspect healing. [20:52] Don't be afraid to get into recovery with people who you think you don't have anything in common with. The real victory lies within crossing over the threshold. We are all fighting for our lives from addiction. [21:36] Older people have had a whole lifetime to develop pride and ego. It's a challenge for clinicians to break down the walls of someone who's been drinking for 30 years. [26:32] One base at a time can beat swinging for the fences. Something to think about. [28:34] Regardless of age the journey speaks to you. You just have to be there to receive it. [31:44] There's more to the process than just getting clean. [32:14] If you can get through the challenge of living with the diverse group of people and different personalities, you can get through anything. [33:20] The housing component is like 80% of treatment. The majority of the day is spent outside of the clinical setting. [33:57] You get opportunities to practice conflict resolution and learn how to deal with negative feelings without picking up a drink. [36:35] Don't assume you think you know what other people are about or what they have to offer. [37:14] Carl is more service driven. He thanks God that his mindset has changed. [40:18] Ben thinks Carl brought more to Rock than they gave him. Links and Resources: Alcoholics Anonymous

Going back to Steve Ralston's commentary for SOFREP TV's "Inside the Team Room: Cut from the Same Cloth" up to his more recent appearance on Episode 300, you guys have wanted to hear more wisdom from Ralston, and we delivered. For the first time, Steve gets into some extremely disturbing details of a very unconventional childhood and adolescence leading up to his time in the SEALs. The story is one that he lived in fear of coming to light for many years. Steve's story however is one of triumph and overcoming adversity, and you do not want to miss it. It may just be that inspirational kick in the ass you need to conquer your own demons. You can follow Steve on Instagram @RalstonSte and stare in awe at the incredible New York City skyline view from his bedroom. We also check our email sent to sofrep.radio@sofrep.com, and talk some recent happenings in the special operations community. Namely the lowering of standards in the Green Berets written at length for the free piece on SOFREP.com, "Careerism, cronyism, and malfeasance in the Special Warfare Center." Steve also addresses some of the criticism his colleagues in the Teams have received for writing books and starting successful business ventures.
