A recent Forbes article highlighted a survey that examined 36 surveys where researchers suggest growing up with sexual minority parents “may confer some advantages to children,” possibly because they are more “tolerant of diversity and more nurturing towards younger children” than heterosexual parents, adding that exploring gender and sexual identity “may actually enhance children's ability to succeed and thrive in a range of contexts.” Essentially the report tries to highlight that there are no noticable differences in kids in what they call sexual majority vs. sexual minority parent relationships. Dr. Kathy considers the point of surveys, how they guide our thinking, and what we should do with them. Then she gives insight on how we can live well in community with sexual minority parents. Parenting in normal times is hard enough, but then you add in a little pandemic, a three-state inferno, political division the likes we've never seen, deadly policing, and for a little kick how about the start of a new school year with, yet again, distance learning and no one around to supervise. In the words of our current favorite meme:"At this point, if a clown invited me into the woods I would just go."Since that's not an option, couples are turning to an age-old response to stress. When the social media platform NextDoor came on the scene, it seemed perfect. It provided a place for people to connect locally, share neighborhood information, and look out for one another. You know, a total love-they-neighbor kind of opportunity. But that Nirvana was short-lived. The platform has slowly devolved into a bickering, mean-spirited place for people to shout at each other in all caps, compete for the snarkiest comment award, turn any and all conversations into a political rant. It literally begs you to pour a glass of wine and curl up to watch the slugfest—unless of course, Fluffy goes missing. Then it's all hands on deck and everyone agrees that all cat lives matter. On this episode we share the good, the bad, and the ugly as we deconstruct a NextDoor bickerfest about whether or not there should be sex education in our schools. We would venture to bet that 80% of the people you’re about to hear from are 70 and older, with no kids in the house anymore! It starts out so innocently. Your baby boy or girl joins a team of 5-year-olds running onto the soccer field and chasing down a ball for the sheer joy of it. Before you know it, however, you are shelling out bank for private lessons, equipment, fees, and an airline ticket to some ball field in Arizona, hoping that a big athletic scholarship is in your superstar's future. What in god's name has happened to kids' sports?!We share all the mistakes we've made encouraging our kids to chase the proverbial gold ring in every sports arena known to mankind—soccer and baseball fields, basketball courts, and swimming pools are just the tip of the iceberg. And we answer the question, once and for all, of how our 6' 8" son could make it through high school and not be a baller. Hint: It all started with a bad coach. Goodnight Moon. Secret handshakes. Saturday morning waffles. Every family has traditions that help define its culture. Ours has been defined, in part, by an annual, multi-family camp-out in the San Juan Islands. TBH, the kayaking, crabbing, campfires, sing-a-longs and potlucks on an island floating in the Northwest waters of the Pacific Ocean is ridiculously idyllic—as long as the children aren't falling into the fire while roasting marshmallows, the driftwood forts aren't crashing in on the kids who built them, and the parents don't have one too many glasses of scotch. We promise you'll laugh when you come along for the (ferry) ride with us to Spencer Spit—and be reminded that what's most important in our lives is connecting with the ones we love. If ever there was a time to lean into that idea, it's right now. If you're straight, you might not know the kinds of hoops that same-sex parents jump through in their effort to raise and protect their kids. Never ones to shy away from the taboo, Bonnie and Ellen tell you all about it in this episode of I Shouldn't Have Had Kids.It will probably blow your mind. For instance, what if you had to adopt your own child after his birth?Or, what would you do if the office lady in your step-son's school told you that you couldn't pick him up without a note from the bio mom?And what names does a kid use for each of his two moms or his two dads? Houston, we have a problem. Get ready to bust a gut as Bonnie and Ellen push past anger and find humor in even the most unfair situations on their journey to fabulous same-sex parenting.Quote from Zach Wahls' speech to the Iowa legislature in 2011 (see video link below):“My family really isn't so different from yours after all. Your family doesn't derive its sense of worth from being told by the state, ‘You're married. Congratulations.’ No, the sense of family comes from the commitment we make to each other: to work through the hard times so we can enjoy the good ones. That comes from the love that binds us. That's what makes a family.”____________________LinksZach's YouTube Video: Zach Wahl's address to Iowa legislatureRosalia Video: Rosalia's performance at the 2020 Grammy AwardsResource for same-sex cards: ZazzleFind all episodes of I Shouldn't Have Had Kids wherever you get your podcastsBuzzsproutApple PodcastsSpotifyFollow us on social media!Instagram @ishouldnthavehadkidsFacebook ishouldnthavehadkidsTwitter @SHHKidsOr, email us :)ishouldnthavehadkids@gmail.com

In 1983, The Sperm Bank of California pioneered an Identity Release program that would forever shape the sperm donation industry. The bank's Executive Director, Alice Ruby, answered some questions I had about the work TSBC does, the research it has published, and the fertility industry as a whole.Just a warning: As someone who was conceived via The Sperm Bank of California, I struggled (and ultimately failed) to separate my personal emotions related to the sperm bank from what I felt was my duty as a podcaster to be non-biased and critical. In retrospect, I should have owned my feelings and experiences from the start. Regardless of my personal bias, I think the interview was informative and valuable in many ways. From starting a family, raising children and affirming relationship, same sex couples do this all on the backdrop of an often discriminative, heteronormative culture. The Parenting Show from Sunday, August 13th 2017, with host Pina Crispo. This week's guests: BJ Barone and Frankie Nelson
Raising a child is said to be one of the most rewarding experiences anyone can hope for - watching a little human grow into adulthood, overcoming life's challenges and reaching important milestones. But, imagine if you were permanently denied this privilege on account of your sexual orientation? On what grounds should same sex couples be prohibited from raising children? The Yardie Skeptics are yet again breaking new ground this Sunday, August 23rd at 12:30pm EDT (11:30am Jamaica time) as we do our first exposé on same sex parenting. What are some of the challenges same sex couples face when they decide to become parents? Do children raised in same sex households turn out as "normal" as other children? Joining us live on air will be one same sex couple - partners Christopher Inniss and Shelton Stroman - and three other same sex parents - Judith Williams, Natalie Bennett, and Nigel Simon to round out our full house on this discussion. Join us for this first ever exploration of the highs and lows of same sex parenting!

Kevin talks with Dawn Stefanowicz, who shares her story of growing up in Canada with heavy exposure to the male homosexual lifestyle. When Dawn was still an infant, her father brought a homosexual partner to live in their home for the first time. Throughout her childhood she was introduced to other young men involved with her father, including minors and some who later committed suicide. Dawn was taken to places that no child should be exposed to, such as gay nude beaches and “sex shops.” Dawn’s father died from AIDS in 1991, and his last living partner died from AIDS in 1996. Dawn was not comfortable with what she saw and experienced, but felt that she had no voice to speak her concerns until her late 20s. It was at this point in her life that she found healing through Christian counseling, and realized that she should speak out. She began to testify about the homosexual lifestyle in court cases regarding issues such as hate crime legislation, and wrote a book about her childhood. Since going public with her story, Dawn has been contacted by dozens of others raised by a homosexual parent and has found that her own experience was not unique. Kevin and Dawn discuss many key issues in the current debate over sexuality, such as gender identity formation, transgenderism, same-sex marriage, freedom of speech/”hate speech”, and same-sex parenting. They consider how the church can offer love and support to those who struggle with their sexuality, while also upholding the ideal pattern that God has provided for human relationships and families. “So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.” —Romans 7:21 This episode first aired on April 26th, 2015.
