Prior to this role, Sarah became an internationally recognized re-inventor of brands, having served as global president of the $5Bn sports brand Gatorade, where she successfully led the business through a major repositioning and business turnaround, and global president of the luxury fitness company Equinox, where she reinvented the offering through a significant technology transformation. Learn to Focus on What You Are Doing Now  Tell me if this has ever happened to you before? You are at work, hustling away on a  project that is fun and exciting, but for some reason, you cannot stop thinking about what’s happening at home with your wife or girlfriend. Or you are out on a date with your significant other and, instead of giving them your full attention, you are answering work emails when you are supposed to be connecting and sharing a special moment. Why the hell is it that we are always thinking about, and focused on everything except for what we are doing right now? Happiness and success are found when you are able to be completely present in whatever you are doing. When you are 100% focused on your work, you will be able to solve problems, pivot, and accomplish your tasks with greater speed and efficiency. Meaning that later in the day, you have the mental bandwidth to focus in on your family and friends 100%. The more present and focused you can be in one area, the more focus and presence you will be able to bring to the other areas of your life. 2. The Foundation of Success is Self-Care One of the most underrated and least talked about subjects in the world of entrepreneurship is self-care. Everyone gets so focused in on the hustle, they get so focused in on grinding it out and being “obsessed” that they forget to take care of #1. But let me ask you a question… How much money are you going to make if you are constantly in and out of the hospital with stress-related illnesses? How effective will you be if you are constantly drained, lethargic, and fatigued? How successful do you think you will really be if you are not taking care of yourself? You won’t! Success without self-care is unsustainable and ultimately unfulfilling. You must learn to take care of yourself, especially your mental and physical health first and focus on your business second. Make time every single day to get some form of exercise. Give yourself those extra 10-15 minutes to meditate and clear your headspace. Give yourself permission to relax at the end of a long day with a hot bath and some calm music. If you are not taking care of yourself and your body, you will eventually burn out and fail. Period. 3. You Cannot Take Things too Seriously  Look… Life is short. So why the hell would you waste one second of your life in an unhappy or depressed state? Have fun for God’s sake! Learn to laugh at yourself, laugh at your work, laugh at your success, laugh at your failure, because, at the end of the day, we are all dead anyways, so we might as well enjoy the journey and have a few laughs along the way. Life isn’t meant to be a constant stress-fest. It’s meant to be enjoyed with people that you like, doing things that you love. And guess what? In every moment, you have the choice to enjoy your life, to have a great time, and to laugh through the hardships or to succumb to the pain and the suffering and allow outside circumstances to dictate your attitude. You have a choice to enjoy life even when it’s hard. You have a choice to let go of your ego, stop taking things so damn seriously, and enjoy the ride. So will you? 4. Stop Going Half Way  Because of the pressure that many millennials feel from the older generations, a large majority of the young people in Western society are making the grave mistake of building “partial bridges” for the sake of their resume. What do I mean? Well, think about it. Most 18-35-year-olds will change jobs every 2-4 years. Instead of finding something that they are really passionate about, going all the way and becoming great, they go halfway. They hop from position to position trying to build their resume and “experience” when all that they really accomplish is becoming ok at a bunch of unrelated crap. If you really want to become great, then you need to go all the way. Build your bridges fully. Commit to one skill, one position, one person and don’t back out when things get tough. Stick it out and become an expert at your craft. Because when you do, the rewards will be great. 5. Passion is Made Not Found  One of the most “bass akwards” beliefs in the 21st century is that you need to find your passion. In reality, you must make your passions. Passions aren’t something that you find like a dollar bill on the street. They are the result of commitment, persistence, and breakthroughs. How many of you reading this are passionate about music? Now… How many of you picked up a guitar for the first time, tried to strum a C chord, sounded terrible and thought to yourself “Yes! I am passionate about this!”? Not many. Chances are, you picked up the guitar and you sucked for a long time. But you stuck with it. Maybe you wanted to impress that girl or show off that Pearl Jam song to your friends. But for whatever reason, you stuck with it, and eventually, it became an addiction. You loved the way that learning new songs and techniques made you feel, you loved the reaction on people’s faces when you started playing their favorite songs, and you loved the feeling of getting into flow while soloing. And now… It’s a passion. And that’s how most passions are born. You don’t know what your passions are until you stick with something long enough to enjoy and understand it. So realize that you make your passions. And the better you become at a skill the more passionate you will be about it.

Ten years ago, when Rafe Offer created Sofar Sounds, he had no idea what kind of global community he would build. He didn't know how badly people needed real, tangible, human connection. He was just frustrated with his experiences at concerts by musical artists he knew and respected. With the drive to improve his own listening experience, Offer came up with a relatively simple idea: invite artists into people's homes to play an intimate set. The audience would kindly be asked to not use their phones and hold off on getting up to get drinks during the experience. Offer describes that first experience as something that truly allowed for connection. It felt so good, they decided to do it again, and then again. By the third living room concert, the line to enter was out the door - and Offer and his co-founders knew they were onto something. Since that first concert in London in 2009, Sofar Sounds has reached 400 cities, with over 20,000 concerts played in various living rooms, on rooftops and in small retail spaces around the world. And although Offer was always passionate about his music, prior to launching this global phenomenon he held titles like Global Marketing Director for Disney and for Coca-Cola, as well as Director of Innovation at Diageo. In this episode of #WeGotGoals, you'll hear him talk about sensing the need to let go of his role in marketing for a major brand and pursue this idea of Sofar Sounds with all his might. The concept, to "be in the moment, [to] take it all in," as Offer says, was - and is - universal. "People all around the world really felt the same way. "I do think that I’ve become the patron saint of failure," Sarah Robb O'Hagan said as I spoke to her for the #WeGotGoals podcast with a laugh. But that's exactly what made me pay attention when I met her two years ago: a special sort of grit that's simultaneously powerful and vulnerable. On this week's episode, Robb O'Hagan and I talk about her goals, sure, and they're well worth a listen, but I was most struck by her retelling of childhood in New Zealand. It's also telling to note what was dominating the news when we spoke - it was in close proximity to the college cheating scandal that made "Aunt Becky" trend on twitter and days after a terrorist attack devastated a mosque in New Zealand. And in the background, we had rescheduled our interview so that Robb O'Hagan could attend a vigil in a mosque in New York City shoulder-to-shoulder with a grieving community. Robb O'Hagan is naturally an introspective person, but I'd think that because of this convergence of factors, you'll catch a certain nostalgia in this interview -  a mix of gratitude for her upbringing and a connection to home. And just like everyone on the podcast before her, I asked Robb O'Hagan to share a big goal she set and achieved in the past. For her it was leaving New Zealand, which could be misconstrued as out of alignment with a deep love for her home. But after listening - and re-listening - I would argue that it was her upbringing there that gave her the courage and confidence she needed to laugh in the face of a challenge. Growing up in land of "50 million sheep and 5 million people," she delightfully explains, her parents empowered her to "figure it out." Their parenting style? The opposite of helicopter or snowplow parents, a fact that makes her profoundly grateful. #ICYMI, a snowplow parent amounts to a parent who actively works to eliminate the threat of hardships and failures for their children. In Robb O'Hagan's book Extreme YOU: Step Up. Stand Out. Kick Ass. Repeat. she writes about taking big risks and dealing with big failures. Risks, failures, and big wins pepper her resume - in fact, her LinkedIn profile lists the failures in every role she's held. Taking big risks led her to a role where she was "in over her head" at Virgin Megastores, which got her exactly one week of severance. Big risks also led her to the successful rebrand of Gatorade, a move she was initially skewered for in the media, but under her leadership, it turned out to be a winning strategy. And as she speaks about her goals for the future, she talks about her desire to change the face of leadership in business and the world, speaking with pride about Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand. You'll hear her speak about mentorship, leadership and the climb, but you'll also hear her give a simple piece of advice to change your personal worldview today. This woman is unmatched. She's been the global president of the $5,000,000,000 sports brand, Gatorade, where she led the business through a major repositioning and business turnaround. She has also held senior positions at Nike, Virgin Atlantic, Atari, served as the global president of Equinox and currently she's the CEO of Flywheel Sports. "Be Relentlessly Open To The Curveballs Of Life" Sarah Robb O'Hagan 1. What drives you to be your best self? Sarah talks about drive and tenacity. She believes that drive can be cultivated and developed. I also believe that if you are inspired by something that your drive will amp up. I also believe that we can’t wait for drive to always appear before we get started. It’s almost the opposite – ready, start, go = drive. Who can you surround yourself with to amp up your drive meter? 2. Is your morning set up for success? Sarah talked about her daily rituals that set her up for success. She shared how she sets her day up the night before, and she recommends no electronics before going to bed. I know for me if I get my body moving in the morning my brain is more creative and focused. A habit that is working for me is to get an hour of writing in before I check my e-mails in the morning. Is there one small adjustment that you could make to your morning ritual that would allow for more focus and productivity? 3. What can you do to elevate your luck meter? I loved it when Sarah talked about creating the circumstances for luck to come your way. I have also heard it said that luck is preparation meeting opportunity and I do know that people with a positive outlook on life seem to have more luck that those who only see the negative. What can you adjust within your set of circumstances to be ready and get ready for that opportunity that is just around the corner? 4. Where do you look for inspiration and with a healthy curiosity, versus competition? Sarah talks about friendly motivation versus competition. She talks about how greatness happens can be when we stop focusing on others and play our own game. Sarah finds inspiration, not by looking at her direct competitors but by looking at adjacent companies for motivation and for sparks of creativity to be ignited. We can do the same in our own life by looking at others people’s stories for inspiration and then filtering them for our own growth. 5. Can you view asking for help through the lens of curiosity versus seeing it as a weakness? Sarah and I talked about The Imposter Syndrome and how we can all feel like frauds some of the time. Sarah shared that the freedom and our power comes from being able to say, “I don’t know" and asking for help. Magic appears the moment you say you need help – it empowers you and kills off the imposter, plus the other person is going to be more open to you when they see you as human.
