Carlin Davison, Corey Webster and Jackson Ball have had strong start to the NBL season, while the All Whites sealed World Cup qualification so we celebrate all things kiwi football. We also touch on Tyler Bindon, Sarpreet Singh and Marko Stamenic as kiwi footballers with intriguing club situations overseas. Wellington Phoenix Women had a loss and seem unlikely to crack A-League Women finals. Then we chat through Blackcaps T20I/ODI stuff vs Pakistan with Nick Kelly and Muhammad Abbas earning ODI call ups, meanwhile White Ferns have struggled to compete with Australia in their T20Is. White Ferns tied up the ODI series with India and Ford Trophy is humming along with youngsters like Tim Robinson and Zak Foulkes lining up for the ODI/T20I tour of Sri Lanka. Chris Wood is still bagging goals and Elijah Just loves whipping in goals from outside the box, while Auckland FC and Wellington Phoenix both had wins in the A-League. Bundesliga. Und so geschah, was geschehen musste.

Wellington Phoenix head coach Mark Rudan has confirmed he won't be returning to the club at the end of the season. As reported last week, The Australian, who has turned the Phoenix around since taking over from Darije Kalezic in May last year, will walk away halfway through his two-year deal - despite the club's best efforts to retain him.Rudan said that making the decision to leave was an extremely difficult one."This has been one of the most difficult decisions I've had to make in my career. I came here wanting a project I could sink my teeth into and really make a difference to our sport."I've said it before, this football club is special. There are wonderful people here that make this club what it is. The people of Wellington and New Zealand have truly embraced me. I thank all the supporters, corporate partners and the entire football club on having such great belief in me," Rudan said in a statement.Rudan's future has been the subject of much speculation since the start of this year, as he has struggled with being isolated from his Sydney-based family.Since January, the Phoenix have been trying to put together a package to convince Rudan to stay, driven by chairman Rob Morrison, but they've been unsuccessful.Living closer to his wife and teenage children is believed to be a key driver of Rudan's decision to return to Australia, though the 43-year-old has also been frustrated with the financial resourcing of the club, and has spoken publicly on several occasions about the need for the Welnix ownership group to display more ambition."...as I've made mention previously, family is up most of importance to me. I am a husband and a father first and a football coach second," Rudan said."The past few weeks I have worked closely with the club trying to find a solution but ultimately it was something that could not be resolved."The confirmation of his exit marks the end of a short, but highly successful era. From the first day he walked through the doors Rudan has shaken up the club, from the playing group to the back office staff, bringing confidence and belief back into the organisation, after the Phoenix's reputation, off and on the field, nosedived dramatically during the Kalezic reign. He has helped several players to produce the best football of their careers, especially young Kiwis like Alex Rufer, Louis Fenton, Sarpreet Singh and Liberato Cacace. His methods have also driven striker Roy Krishna to enjoy a stunning season, and former Socceroo David Williams is another who has responded positively to the environment under Rudan. The former Sydney FC captain has engendered a unified, successful playing group, with a positive, attacking style and the recipe has worked. The Phoenix are all but qualified for the finals for just the fifth time in their history, and could surpass their highest regular season points tally (42 in 2014-15).Four more goals in the last three regular season games will also mark a new goals record for the club. The team enjoyed a nine-game unbeaten run from the beginning of December to late January, smashing the previous best streak of six.Such success has brought back the fans, highlighted by more than 23,000 coming to Eden Park in February, a new club high for a non-finals match. However, Rudan's departure means the franchise will be on the search again for a new head coach, and will bring another period of uncertainty and upheaval for the capital team.Since Ernie Merrick's exit in December 2016, Des Buckingham, Kalezic, Chris Greenacre (caretaker) and Rudan have occupied the position.

Wellington Phoenix head coach Mark Rudan has rocked the club by informing them that he won't be back next season. The Australian, who has turned the Phoenix around since taking over from Darije Kalezic in May last year, will walk away halfway through his two-year deal - despite the club's best efforts to retain him. The Herald understands Rudan has been unwilling to discuss the situation with the club over the last month and has recently informed them that he is leaving.Rudan's future has been the subject of much speculation since the start of this year, as he has struggled with being isolated from his Sydney-based family.Since January, the Phoenix have been trying to put together a package to convince Rudan to stay, driven by chairman Rob Morrison, but they've been unsuccessful.Living closer to his wife and teenage children is believed to be a key driver of Rudan's decision to return to Australia, though the 43-year-old has also been frustrated with the financial resourcing of the club, and has spoken publicly on several occasions about the need for the Welnix ownership group to display more ambition.Phoenix CEO David Dome was unavailable for comment when contacted by the Herald on Friday.Rudan refused an interview request, telling the Herald he wouldn't "be doing anything this week", as he was fully focused on the clash with the Brisbane Roar on Friday night. The confirmation of his exit marks the end of a short, but highly successful era.

LISTEN TO DAVID DOME TALK WITH D'ARCY AND GORAN ABOVESydney FC 1Wellington Phoenix 3The Phoenix produced one of the best away results of their 12-year history with a 3-1 win in Sydney.Six days after being denied a deserved victory against unbeaten leaders Perth in a match marred by an unwarranted red card, Wellington improved further in an excellent display across the Tasman. The Phoenix were sharper, worked harder and played with greater desperation to upset the odds and add to hopes that an unexpected transformation is under way.A couple of statistics underline the notable nature of this win — the Phoenix had lost seven and drawn one of their last eight games against Sydney; they won just one away game last season and had not even scored an away goal this season before tonight. The result was particularly sweet for Phoenix coach Mark Rudan, an A-League champion with Sydney FC who played alongside several of tonight's opposition staff, including coach Steve Corica. On the back of a dire three-match losing run, Rudan successfully instilled confidence into his side last week for the game against Perth. The focus this week was on being brave and wanting the ball, and Wellington delivered again. After taking six games to score their first goal from open play, the Phoenix were almost unrecognisable from last month's incarnation. Roy Krishna scored a tidy brace and thrived on the service provided by his fellow attackers, with the likes of Sarpreet Singh, Alex Rufer and Mandi a constant threat on the ball. The Phoenix set the pace from the outset, forcing a corner in the opening minute and taking a first shot in the fourth.Sydney responded with the best early chance, Adam Le Fondre clipping a good cross over the crossbar from close range. Le Fondre was lively, showing why he has scored nine goals in as many games since arriving in Sydney, and the Phoenix did well to contain him.But for 20 minutes, Wellington completely outplayed Sydney, scoring three goals. The first two exploited Krishna's pace superbly in the 21st and 30th minutes. For the first, Singh curled an outstanding pass in behind the Sydney defence for the Fijian to run on to, and he produced a composed right-foot finish into the bottom corner. For the second, Mandi passed from a similar position on the left and Krishna scored with his left foot into the opposite corner. It's been quite a week for the Fijian. He became the club's record scorer last Sunday, then a New Zealand citizen on Thursday, and added another two goals tonight before being forced off on the hour with a hamstring complaint. Given his form, the club will be hoping any injury is not serious.Steven Taylor capped a remarkable first half by scoring his first Phoenix goal, guiding a header into the top corner from an excellent Liberato Cacace cross.A Tom Doyle own goal proved the catalyst for a Wellington collapse against Adelaide two weeks ago, with a 1-0 lead turning into a 3-1 defeat. Andrew Durante put the ball into his own net soon after Taylor's goal tonight but the Phoenix were spared a similar examination of their mental toughness when referee Jonathan Barreiro blew for offside.Sydney had more of the play in the second half but Wellington proved frustrating opponents and made the hosts work hard for their only goal, scored in the 89th minute by Michael Zullo after Louis Fenton looked to have been fouled in the build-up. But no matter, the goal was a mere consolation and took little gloss off an outstanding Phoenix performance.Wellington Phoenix 3 (R. Krishna 21, 30, S. Taylor 38)Sydney FC 1 (M. Zullo 89).Halftime: 3-0.

LISTEN TO ANDREW DURANTE TALK WITH D'ARCY AND GORAN ABOVEGoals were always going to be a problem for the Wellington Phoenix this season, especially early in the campaign, and so it proved on Saturday night. The Wanderers were good value for their 3-0 win — it perhaps could have been more — as the Phoenix had little of quality in the final third.A second half penalty, unfortunately conceded by milestone man Andrew Durante, sealed the result for the visitors, after they had opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a neatly constructed move.New coach Mark Rudan has built a stronger defensive base, but creating attacking combinations always takes much longer, and the Phoenix have a modest roster. The Phoenix relied on building pressure through frustration in their previous two games, and then exploiting space as the game opened up. But the Wanderers' early goal, and assured display in possession made that difficult. In trying conditions, the home side huffed and puffed, but the only fireworks on display were the early Guy Fawkes celebrations around the Wellington isthmus. The Phoenix couldn't string much together in possession, and only really looked dangerous from set pieces, especially inswinging corners in the blustery conditions. Spanish import Mandi still looks short of match fitness, and fellow midfielders Mitch Nichols and Alex Rufer struggled to impose themselves on the game.It was always going to be a tough assignment; the Wanderers were unbeaten in their last seven games against Wellington (five wins and two draws) and have a roster stacked full of talent. It was Durante's 250th game for the club, and a haka welcomed him and his family onto the pitch. Rudan rolled the dice for the match, with starts for Nichols and Max Burgess for the first time this season.Conditions were awful. The rain, which started as a drizzle, got progressively heavier as the match progressed. It wasn't quite Germany versus Poland in 1974 — the famed 'Water Battle of Frankfurt' — but precise passing was difficult as the ball slowed on the waterlogged surface. Accompanying the rain was the notorious Wellington wind, a savage gale blowing straight up the park.Somewhat surprisingly, the visitors adapted better.Roly Bonevacia, who played 80 games across three seasons across for the Phoenix, initiated the opening goal against his former club. His slide rule pass sliced the Wellington defence wide open, and German import Alex Baumjohann finished the subsequent cross with aplomb in the 11th minute.Baumjohann was a class above. The attacking midfielder has had spells at several Bundesliga clubs — including Schalke 04, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayern Munich — and it showed, with his touch and vision standing out.The Sydney team dominated the rest of the half, with their neat passing in the trying conditions, though the Phoenix created half chances for Roy Krishna and Liberato Cacace.Oriol Riera extended the Wanderers lead in the 55th minute from the spot, when a shot struck Durante's elbow as he blocked a shot. It was a 50-50 call, but probably fair enough.Nathan Burns and Sarpreet Singh were summoned for the last half hour, with the Australian heading against a post in injury time, before Jordan O'Doherty profited from a last minute break away.Western Sydney Wanderers 3 (A Baumjohann, O Riera pen, J O'Doherty)Wellington Phoenix 0Halftime: 1-0

LISTEN TO ASSISTANT COACH CHRIS GREENACRE TALK WITH D'ARCY AND GORAN ABOVEThe Wellington Phoenix are on the march. It's been long time since anyone could say that, but a 2-1 win over Newcastle is a promising start to this campaign. It's just the second time the Phoenix have won their opening game in 12 attempts, and was the perfect start to coach Mark Rudan's reign. The Australian has been reluctant to make any big predictions ahead of this campaign, but he has regularly promised "100 per cent commitment" from his team. That was what they delivered, and the intensity of effort, a generous slice of luck, plus the conditioning and organisation honed in pre-season, achieved this outcome.Unfortunately this victory will be overshadowed by more VAR controversy, as technology driven decisions ruled out a Phoenix goal, then gifted the Wellington side a penalty. Both were highly debatable, at best. The Phoenix's intentions were clear from the start. Mark Rudan set up a five man defence, though wing backs Liberato Cacace and Louis Fenton had licence to get forward in possession. In front of them sat Alex Rufer and Spanish import Mandi Sosa, an extra shield in front of the central defenders. It meant the Phoenix struggled to get a flow in possession, especially in the first half, as the hopeful ball forward was often the only option. It wasn't always pretty to watch, but given what the Phoenix have been through in recent seasons, that probably doesn't really matter. All the fan base want, as a starting point, is a team that will work hard for each other, and not fall apart at the slightest hint of pressure. That's what they got.The first Phoenix goal in the 33rd minute was against the run of play, but also a reward for their effort. The ball skimmed off Jets' defender Daniel Georgievski's head and past Glen Moss, after Steven Taylor had directed a Sarpreet Singh free kick back across goal. Before that the best chances had fallen to the visitors, with Jets forward Jair wasting one and Matt Ridenton missing a good opportunity on his return to the capital.Roy Krishna went close off a Fenton cross in the second half, as the Phoenix started to get more possession in the final third, while the Jets pushed forward in search of an equaliser. The Phoenix were unlucky not to extend their lead just after the hour mark, after Singh bundled the ball into the net from a close range rebound after a misdirected David Williams shot. It was initially ruled a goal, but after VAR intervention the referee judged the ball had touched Singh's arm, as well as his torso. It was a marginal, though probably forensically correct call. It hurt though, especially as Williams should have done better with his original effort, but directed his shot well wide of the target.Phoenix goalkeeper Filip Kurto tipped a Nigel Boogaard header spectacularly onto the crossbar to keep their lead intact, before a foul on substitute Mitch Nichols allowed the referee to find a penalty, via VAR. It was dispatched by Krishna at the second attempt, before a consolation strike from Dimitri Petratos seconds before the final whistle.Wellington Phoenix 2 (Daniel Georgievski own goal, Roy Krishna) Newcastle Jets 1 (Dimitri Petratos) Halftime: 1-0
