Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) impacts more than 45 million Americans and about 1 in 10 globally. So, if you have abdominal pain, diarrhea and/or constipation on a regular basis...you are not alone. We are thrilled to have world-renowned gastroenterologist, Dr. William Chey, on this episode to discuss this diagnosis along with common IBS mimickers.  Dr. Chey is the Chief of Gastroenterology at the University of Michigan and a true physician champion for the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the management of IBS. He discusses how this complex condition, once perceived purely as a psychosomatic disorder, has evolved into a multifaceted syndrome with new and improved treatment methods. Discover the transformative potential of dietary strategies like the low FODMAP diet, the integration of behavioral therapy along with complementary and alternative medicine (like acupuncture) into patient care, as we explore the nuances of treating IBS and its masqueraders. Dr. Chey sheds light on the enlightening findings from a recent study on disaccharidase deficiencies, particularly the surprising prevalence of sucrase-isomaltase deficiency in IBS patients with diarrhea predominance. Gain insight into the challenges of current testing methods and the role of bile acid malabsorption, which opens the door to a more precise and personalized approach to managing unruly gut symptoms. The conversation steers toward the promise and limitations of breath tests and the significance of a Dream Team approach, blending expertise from various specialists to address the unique needs of each patient. We also delve into the intricate relationship between small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and bile acid diarrhea, and the innovative work of researchers like Dr. Mark Pimentel. Dr. Chey emphasizes the growing importance of precision medicine in the field of gastroenterology and gut health, highlighting the complexities of diagnosing and treating conditions such as SIBO. While we share a wealth of knowledge that promises to enlighten both healthcare professionals and individuals navigating the intricacies of IBS and it's common mimickers, you won't want to miss the introduction to a very special guest! The French baritone Gérard Souzay was born Gérard Tisserand on 8 December 1918 and died in Antibes on 17 August 2004. This episode was one of my first episodes, originally posted in honor of his then 101st birthday. It has been chosen by my friend Randall Scarlata as his Listeners' Favorite episode in the last of this month's Great Baritones series, and this is particularly appropriate and moving, because from the age of 19 until Souzay's death, Randall had a close association with Souzay as both teacher and mentor. He tells some wonderful stories about their work together, shares some of Souzay's bon mots and also presents with great compassion some of the personal challenges that Souzay faced. He also discusses some of Souzay's other artistic pursuits, one in particular of which may surprise you! The episode itself explores Souzay's recorded legacy, with particular emphasis on his earliest recordings. Repertoire ranges from Jaime Ovalle to César Franck, and Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert to Maurice Ravel, Henry Purcell, and Claude Debussy (including an excerpt from his 1955 radio performance of Golaud in Pelléas et Mélisande), many of them accompanied by Souzay's musical and personal partner Dalton Baldwin. We also hear performances by his teachers and mentors Claire Croiza, Vanni-Marcoux, Pierre Bernac, and Lotte Lehmann, as well as his sister, Geneviève Touraine. And Randall's jewel of an introduction is a testimonial and tribute you'll want to turn to again and again. I am proud to present again for your listening pleasure a singer who means as much to me as any other who has ever lived. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.07.07.548180v1?rss=1 Authors: Hunsberger, H., Lee, S., Jin, M., Lanio, M., Whye, A., Cha, J., Scarlata, M., Jayaseelan, K., Denny, C. A. Abstract: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), such as depression and anxiety, are observed in 90% of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, two-thirds of whom are women. NPS usually manifest long before AD onset creating a therapeutic opportunity. Here, we examined the impact of anxiety on AD progression and the underlying brain-wide neuronal mechanisms. To gain mechanistic insight into how anxiety impacts AD progression, we performed a cross-sectional analysis on mood, cognition, and neural activity utilizing the ArcCreERT2 x enhanced yellow fluorescent protein (eYFP) x APP/PS1 (AD) mice. The ADNI dataset was used to determine the impact of anxiety on AD progression in human subjects. Female AD mice exhibited anxiety-like behavior and cognitive decline at an earlier age than control (Ctrl) mice and male mice. Brain-wide analysis of c-Fos+ revealed changes in regional correlations and overall network connectivity in AD mice. Sex-specific memory trace changes were observed; female AD mice exhibited impaired memory traces in dorsal CA3 (dCA3), while male AD mice exhibited impaired memory traces in the dorsal dentate gyrus (dDG). In the ADNI dataset, anxiety predicted transition to dementia. Female subjects positive for anxiety and amyloid transitioned more quickly to dementia than male subjects. While future studies are needed to understand whether anxiety is a predictor, a neuropsychiatric biomarker, or a comorbid symptom that occurs during disease onset, these results suggest that AD network dysfunction is sexually dimorphic, and that personalized medicine may benefit male and female AD patients rather than a one size fits all approach. New Climate-Friendly Cement Substitute?

Real Estate News: Real Estate Investing Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 16, 2022 4:53

Cement is to the construction industry like dirt is to a garden. It's essential for all kinds of buildings and infrastructure. But it's also a huge greenhouse gas contributor. With the current push toward more climate-friendly technologies, two researchers from Massachusetts claim they have created a cement-like material that is not just carbon neutral, but literally sucks carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.Hi, I'm Kathy Fettke and this is Real Estate News for Investors. If you like our podcast, please subscribe and leave us a review. So what is this intriguing new material? It's called Enzymatic Construction Material or ECM. It was created at the Massachusetts-based Worcester Polytechnic Institute by researchers Suzanne Scarlata and Nima Rahbar.Carbon-Negative FoodprintIn addition to its eco-friendly carbon-negative footprint, they say it will also use stored carbon to heal cracks. And it may also be a good material to patch aging concrete. As reported by Construction Dive, the primary component of ECM is calcium carbonate crystals. You get that by combining carbonic anhydrase with CO2, which is an enzyme found in living cells. The mixture also includes sand, water, and a polymer binding agent. The final product isn't as strong as concrete, but Scarlata and Rahbar say it could be used for smaller projects with a lower load demand. That might be the side of a house, for example. What's a Megapascal?ECM's strength is currently 12 MPa, or Megapascals, which is a unit of measure for the compressive strength of concrete. The higher the number, the more pressure can be applied to the concrete before it starts to break down. Typical Portland Concrete ranges from 20 to 40 MPa but some concrete is rated much higher for projects that require high strength and durability.Scarlata told Construction Dive: “The technology's there, but needs tweaking and a little more development.” They have patented their product and founded a start-up called Enzymatic Inc. to develop it. In addition to making it stronger, they also reportedly want to make it more resistant to humidity and water damage. They plan on conducting more tests, and will be filing for grants to help fund their research. ECM currently costs about $168 per cubic yard to produce although Rahbar says the benefits it provides for the environment are much greater than concrete. Concrete is cheaper, dollar-wise, at $125 per cubic yard.Other Eco-Friendly Concrete AlternativesBut this isn't the only eco-friendly product being developed to replace concrete some day in the future. According to media website, Anthropocene, which focuses on sustainability science and innovation, there are other products in development that are also carbon-negative.One is called hempcrete, which is made of hemp fibers and a binding agent. Another is a material that's infused with bacteria that absorbs carbon dioxide. The ECM product has an enzyme that does that.ECM vs. ConcreteAnthropocene says that twenty-seven cubic feet of ECM will store 8 kilograms of carbon dioxide while the same amount of concrete will “emit” more than 180 kilograms of carbon dioxide. In addition to being carbon negative, ECM can use the carbon it stores to heal cracks. It can also be produced without high temperatures and doesn't take a long time to cure, like concrete. It'll take a huge effort to displace concrete, however. Concrete pretty much rules the construction world right now, with some 30 billion metric tons used per year. It also accounts for about 7% of the greenhouse gases produced worldwide.Rahbar says their goal is to produce a building material with a lower carbon footprint. He says: “It's our contribution to climate change issues.”If you'd like to read more on this topic, you'll find links in the show notes at newsforinvestors.com.Also, please remember to hit the subscribe button, and leave a review! You can also join our real estate investor network for free at newsforinvestors.com. Why We Should Still Keep the Sabbath (Mark Scarlata)

The Biblical Mind

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 12, 2021 43:24

American Christians often make two key mistakes when approaching the idea of sabbath in the Hebrew Bible / Old Testament. First, we assume that the command has been made irrelevant by the New Covenant. Second, we "spiritualize" the idea of sabbath and downplay the importance of formative rituals for our bodies, not just our souls. However, a closer investigation of sabbath in Scripture reveals its importance, not only as a command of God but as a necessary counterweight to our digitally saturated and busy lives. In this episode, Dr. Dru Johnson interviews Dr. Mark Scarlata about sabbath as a gift for all creation. Dr. Scarlata is a Tutor and Lecturer in Old Testament Studies at Saint Mellitus College in London, an Anglican priest, and the author of the recent book Sabbath Rest: The Beauty of God's Rhythm for a Digital Age. I'm your host, Christian Klepp, and one of the founders of EINBLICK Consulting. Our goal is to share inspirational stories, tips and insights from b2b marketers, digital entrepreneurs, and industry experts that will help you think differently, succeed and scale your business.Alright, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this episode of the B2B Marketers on a Mission podcast. I'm your host, Christian Klepp. And today I'd like to welcome a guest on to the show who I met through the thriving RevGenius community. She's not only an experienced b2b marketer, but is also well versed in the fields of digital marketing, AI, and machine learning. So Joya Scarlata, welcome to the show!Joya Scarlata  00:53Thank you for having me, Christian.Christian Klepp  00:55All right. You know, Joya, it's really great to connect with you again, and I'm really looking forward to this conversation. So let's just get this party started! Please give our listeners a little bit of a background, and tell us a little bit about yourself.Joya Scarlata  01:09Yeah, well, again, once again, thanks for having me. I actually really enjoy your podcast. I think it's great. Targeting b2b marketers. So a little bit about myself, I am based out of Virginia Beach. And I work for a b2b IT service firm known as Interra IT, in our small but mighty marketing team. So the company itself is based out of San Jose, California. And we've been in business for about 20 years. And we provide IT services ranging from QA, testing, mobility, cloud computing, big data, what have you. And funny enough, I actually did not start off my career in marketing. Actually, far from it, I majored in International Relations and Economics. So I am completely different from marketing. I started off my career in that field, in research and analysis, working for a think tank in Washington, DC. And once I got married, my life changed. And I decided I wanted to switch my career path. And I found myself in marketing. So here I am now.Christian Klepp  02:39Wow, what a story. And Joya, if I may say so like when you said like, when I got married, my life changed. The Low Fodmap Diet is the most researched diet for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and is estimated to help alleviate symptoms in upwards of 40-70% of IBS patients. Not many people know more about the low fodmap diet then our guest Kate Scarlata, MPH, RDN. FODMAP is an acronym that defines foods that are composed of Fermentable Oligosaccharides (fructans and galacto oligosaccharides), Disaccharide (lactose), Monosaccharides (Fructose) AND Polyols (sugar alcohols). These carbohydrates are small chained carbohydrates that many people with IBS and related digestive disorders have a difficult time tolerating these carbohdrates and may develop symptoms of bloating, pain, constipation, or diarrhea, or a mixture of these symptoms. We dive deeply into the Low Fodmap Diet and also into other advanced conditions that mimic IBS and must be considered if you are not responding to the Low Fodmap Diet. I have show notes on my blog at this link. Now more about our guest. Kate Scarlata, MPH, RDN, LDN is a registered, licensed dietitian with a nutrition consultation business in Medway, Massachusetts. There’s a wealth of information about how prebiotics and probiotics can influence your gut microbiome for the better. And yet, even though SIBO is a type of gut imbalance, there’s less awareness around how these tools work to eradicate unwanted bacteria and encourage the resurgence of beneficial populations. In this week’s episode, we clear up some of the confusion and talk about how specific probiotics and prebiotics can be used in SIBO treatment, how taking these supplements in pill form differs from getting them through your diet, and what well-established thinking on the low FODMAP diet (which limits many prebiotic fibers) gets wrong when it comes to the health of your microbiome at large. To break it all down for us, I am joined by Jason Hawrelak, PhD, who is a research scientist, educator and clinician with more than 18 years of clinical experience. Dr Hawrelak did his PhD degrees in the areas of the gastrointestinal microbiota, irritable bowel syndrome, the causes of dysbiosis, and the clinical applications of pre- and probiotics. He has written extensively in the medical literature on these topics – including 16 textbook chapters – and his research has been cited over 800 times. So yeah, he’s a pretty big deal. A quick taste of what we’ll cover: What the microbiome is and the relationship between our bacteria and our immune system Why broad spectrum antibiotics might cause a bout of SIBO down the line The various functions of probiotics to improve IBS symptoms How certain prebiotic fibers can improve motility and reduce the risk of SIBO Which types of probiotics and prebiotics to use if you have hydrogen versus methane SIBO The best herbs for not disturbing the colonic ecosystem in the large intestine Why allicin garlic works to treat SIBO, while garlic in food remains problematic How fermented foods and prebiotic fibers in our diet effects our gut health overall, and how they compare to conventional probiotic pills Why the low FODMAP diet my NOT be the right approach Visceral hypersensitivity and why we might still experience symptoms even after SIBO is gone Resources, Mentions and Notes: Dr. Hawrelak’s website, The Probiotic Advisor Study on Proton Pump Inhibitors and SIBO Study on PHGG and rifaximin General study on probiotics and SIBO reduction  Dr. Hawrelak's recommended basic probiotic: Biogaia Gastrus  Visceral hypersensitivity study  Partially hydrolyzed guar gum Phoebe's post on probiotics for general health  Join the SIBO Made Simple Facebook Community Page Subscribe to receive a free download of the episode transcript  This episode is brought to you by 4 Weeks to Wellness, my online program for finding the sweet spot between health and hedonism. Need 4-weeks worth of easy low FODMAP recipes with a step-by-step meal plan laid out for you? Over the last 5 years, the low FODMAP approach has become the gut healing diet du jour, with everyone from naturopaths to conventional MD’s prescribing it for IBS relief. On today’s episode we get into the nitty gritty of what eliminating fermentable carbs from your life actually looks like, the healing potential for your SIBO, and how this diet can effect your long-term gut health for better or for worse. If Allison Siebecker, our guest on episode 1, is the queen of SIBO, Kate Scarlata is definitely the queen of FODMAP’s. She’s been writing out this dietary approach for IBS and creating tons of research on her site since long before people like myself were aware of it. She is also the author of several books, her latest of which is called The Low FODMAP Diet Step by Step.  A quick taste of what we’ll cover: What the FODMAP acronym stands for Fructose malabsorption and why it effects people with SIBO more than others How to navigate the complicated ingredient lists for low FODMAP quantities Kate’s tips for keeping the flavor in your meals without garlic and onion Her strategies for reintroducing these ingredients back into your diet without fear What really constitutes a failed test or on-going insensitivity and what other milder symptoms might mean about your SIBO recovery And so much more... Works for voice and piano performed by baritone Randall Scarlata, soprano Jennifer Aylmer, and pianists Jeremy Denk and Laura Ward.Ives: Selected SongsTin Pan Alley SelectionsToday’s podcast features a wonderful bouquet of American song—beginning with selection by Charles Ives, and then moving onto works by Tin Pan Alley composers. Though at first blush they may seem like odd bedfellows, it’s important to remember than many of the Tin Pan Alley greats were contemporaries of Ives. The context was certainly different—Ives is often thought of as an under-appreciated (and commercially unsuccessful) pioneer, while the writers on Tin Pan Alley were employed by music publishers, and as such their work was expected to have commercial appeal. But both were masters of their respective domains. We’ll begin with 8 selections by Ives, performed by baritone Randall Scarlata and pianist Jeremy Denk. Ives is a master of setting the scene, of evoking a time and place with just a few minutes of music. He does so here with great skill. Scarlata then joins soprano Jennifer Aylmer and pianist Laura Ward to perform 11 tunes from Tin Pan Alley—some familiar, some less so, but all delightful.
