How does an organization effectively showcase how the funds raised from a signature fundraising event benefit the community they serve? In this episode, I talk with Laura Ward, Founder, President & CEO of Houston Children's Charity to discuss the organization's upcoming Chariots for Children event. For nearly 30 years, Houston Children's Charity has been one of Houston's top nonprofit events. This is due in large part to Laura Ward's vision, strong leadership, and passion for helping children in the Houston community. Chariots for Children, a Van Distribution Event provides children with disabilities vans to give them and their families more independence. The van distribution is the end result of an innovative Paddles Up at the organization's annual Houston Children's Charity Gala, Houston's top annual fundraising gala. Attendees raise their paddles to provide one family with a van. This year, a record 66 vans will be distributed to children at Chariots for Children. Laura Ward provides a masterclass on what it takes to effectively lead a nonprofit organization including tips for creating an efficient application process for services that benefit anywhere from tens to tens of thousands, the importance of understanding the specific need you can fill in your community, and how to attract a top-tier board and hold them accountable. This is one episode you will definitely not want to miss.

Welcome to this episode of The Underdog Vet Podcast! In this episode's Animal Advocate Interview I spoke with Laura Ward a Clinical Animal Behaviourist, who specialises in dog aggression. Laura set up Minds Alike Animal Behaviour after working as a veterinary nurse for 10years. She has always had a passion for how animals think and feel and now dedicates her time to helping owners solve their dog's behavioural issues. Laura firmly believes in using only positive approaches and that having an understanding of how your dog is feeling means you can then appreciate why they are behaving in the ways they are. Laura and I spoke about the importance of using a qualified dog behaviourist, the difference between a dog behaviourist and a dog trainer and why it is vital dog owners understand some dog psychology! Laura used some words that some listeners may not be familiar with, here's some explanations: Desensitisation: Desensitisation means very gradual exposure to the scary thing, starting at a very low level and building up very slowly, at every step on the way, you dog should be happy and comfortable. Positive Reinforcement: Positive reinforcement training means training with rewards, such as a treat, praise or a toy. You give your dog something they want when they're behaving in a way that you like (more info here: https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/dog-advice/training/techniques/positive-reinforcement-training-with-rewards). Socialisation: The process of getting a puppy/dog comfortable and familiar with everyday things. Positive Punishment: The addition or application of something unpleasant to the dog or it's environment eg using a prong or electric collar or hitting the dog. Threshold: The point at which a dog will be triggered by something. This weeks guest is awesome animal behaviourist, and one of my Diamond coaching clients, Laura Ward. A childhood love of animals led to Laura leaving school and becoming a Vet Nurse, a career she held for 10 years. In that time she also nurtured a love of dog behaviour, and eventually she left employed life to start her own training business. Steady referrals from her network of Vet colleagues meant the new business thrived, and pretty soon she had a full diary and was hiring other trainers to help with demand. Laura is a self confessed 'people pleaser', and not wanting to let clients down - or referring vets - plus guilt about taking a proper cut from her staffs earnings meant she ended up with a big business with a long waiting list, loads of clients, lots of staff, lots of stress, but little money left over for a very busy and overwhelmed Laura. After almost burning out and rapidly approaching the VAT limit, Laura finally reached out to Dom for help. We put together a simple plan, she took action and quickly took back control of her beast of a business. Now, she has time to concentrate on herself, her family and her true passions, behaviour work and mentoring. You'll be inspired by Laura's story and it'll give you the confidence to take back control of your pet business. Laura and Trevor Ward knew something was wrong with their firstborn son early in his life, but doctors thought it was first-time parent jitters. They learned to advocate for their child and themselves, finally receiving a diagnosis and treatment for a rare genetic disorder, Guanidinoacetate methyltransferase deficiency or GAMPT. Because they had learned to advocate for their older child’s health, when their second son fell ill and knowing it was not GAMPT due to newly imposed newborn screenings, they fought for his own diagnosis of Infant Botulism. Laura Ward joins this episode of Relentlessly Resilient to share her story of how she learned to trust her mother’s instinct through her sons’ illness, stay at Primary Children’s Hospital, diagnosis, and treatment. Even though we live in challenging times we can become Relentlessly Resilient as we lean on and learn from one another’s experiences. Hosts Jennie Taylor and Michelle Scharf are no strangers to overcoming adversity; Michelle lost her husband to cancer, while Jennie’s husband Major Brent Taylor was killed in the service of our country. Their stories bond them together and now listeners can join them weekly as they visit with others enduring challenges and who teach us how they are exercising resiliency, finding value in their grief, and purpose in moving forward. E25 That Great Business Show, Ireland's best business podcast.2.00' A hilarious insight into the first seven years of start-up www.ImpactGumShields.com with former advertising exec James Murphy explaining the highly unusual and very, very painful way he found to attract a million viewers to learn about his patented gum shield. It involves Ian Madigan testing the gum shield, but not where or how you might think! Have a look here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ0BkQCyQTs After 'a mere' three and a half years Impact has finally secured a patent on its software. Next stop the world. To complete his Impact Gum Shield early executive team James explains why 'he'd hire Dan Weiden (creator of Nike 'just do it' strapline) in a heartbeat'.26' The Ward family owned the Mothercare franchise in Ireland for decades but with the collapse of the UK mothership the Irish franchise finally foundered and the family business went down with it. Marketing director Laura Ward was in Mothercare HQ in Watford, UK the day the story broke. She heard not from management, but she saw it on Sky News. She tells That Great Business Show how traumatic that was. Now, the Ward siblings have started again with www.Kaliedy.com - an online version of what they had - but with a greater emphasis on backing small Irish businesses. Laura wants relevant businesses to contact her with a view to a listing. Her 'Hire in Heartbeat' is Chrissy Teigen. She explains how having Chrissie onboard could make her business go global.47' You may think you know the horse business. That is until you listen to Equine MediRecord co-founder Pierce Dargan. He trots us through the worldwide market opportunities for his software, markets that include Sweden where horse trotting is massive (who knew?), New Zealand where bloodstock makes a mark on the country's GDP, Poland - famed for its Winged Hussars. In total he gives 60,000,000 reasons why his TCD Tangent backed business has a massive global opportunity. As well as hiring his grandad, famous industrialist Michael Dargan, in a heartbeat he also wants Andrew Lloyd Webber in his posse. Find out why.1.09' Next time you look at a lamppost, say to yourself, 'there's a business in that'. The same goes for a park bench, a road sign, a telegraph pole. The great news for another TCD Tangent backed company, www.AIMapIT.com is that their very early stage AI company is already getting traction from large enterprises who want to count the 2 million lamp poles in Ireland, or the 5.5 million poles in the UK. Co-founder Julie Connelly says that because it's at such an early stage the business opportunities are only beginning (a Greek company has already come calling). Listen to see if you have a business idea that could you use their business idea. Julie's 'heartbeat hire' is Padraig O'Donoghue of Surecom Technology. There’s drama and then there’s DRAMA!! This week hosts Dr. Ernie Ward and Beckie Mossor, RVT discuss when, how, and why you should share your feelings with your veterinary work family. Dr. Ward reveals why he believes the legacy of Baby Boomers “Suck it up buttercup” attitude may have led to today’s burnout and mental stress. Beckie shares a recent personal tragedy and how she dealt with it. Both emphasize the importance of a supportive clinic culture and leader that staff members feel comfortable sharing their feelings (and how Dr. Ward and Laura Ward did this!). And the duo discuss how REAL Drama Kings and Queens make it more challenging for real nurturing to occur (and what to do if you find yourself in a similar situation). This is another good “real real” talk about the tough topics faced in everyday veterinary practice. Viewfinders, please share this episode with a colleague who needs to hear it. Together we can help create more supportive, nurturing work environments.
Laura Ward joins Jack and Freddie to discuss Off Menu, Potterless and Somehow I Manage.
My co-host The Vintage Contessa & Times Past was greatly missed during today’s incredible sit down with Dave Ward's Houston and Jim Mcgrath on Styling Social Justice! In discussing the launch of Dave Ward’s new memoir “Good Evening, Friends: A Broadcaster Shares His Story” co-written by Jim McGrath, we covered so much of Dave’s journey to now. Whether talking about his time in radio to walking into ABC13 Houston KTRK fifty plus years ago, from interviewing President Barak Obama to life “behind the scenes” with #MarvinZindler - there were so many insights into the life and legacy of Houston’s Media icon. And of course from his Mrs. Laura Ward who was the glue and catalyst behind this book production to the many who have read it and commented like Neal Hammil, Shelby Hodge with PaperCity Magazine, Ken Hoffman with CultureMap and more - everyone agrees this is a must read! Thank you Jim for all your work and expertise on this important project. And thank you both for your time on #stylingsocialjustice this morning! To listen, find the live video on our Facebook page or go to stylingsocialjustice.com!

Works for voice and piano performed by baritone Randall Scarlata, soprano Jennifer Aylmer, and pianists Jeremy Denk and Laura Ward.Ives: Selected SongsTin Pan Alley SelectionsToday’s podcast features a wonderful bouquet of American song—beginning with selection by Charles Ives, and then moving onto works by Tin Pan Alley composers. Though at first blush they may seem like odd bedfellows, it’s important to remember than many of the Tin Pan Alley greats were contemporaries of Ives. The context was certainly different—Ives is often thought of as an under-appreciated (and commercially unsuccessful) pioneer, while the writers on Tin Pan Alley were employed by music publishers, and as such their work was expected to have commercial appeal. But both were masters of their respective domains. We’ll begin with 8 selections by Ives, performed by baritone Randall Scarlata and pianist Jeremy Denk. Ives is a master of setting the scene, of evoking a time and place with just a few minutes of music. He does so here with great skill. Scarlata then joins soprano Jennifer Aylmer and pianist Laura Ward to perform 11 tunes from Tin Pan Alley—some familiar, some less so, but all delightful.
