For episode two, we fast-forward two decades to 2017 and Mindhorn. Written by and starring Julian Barrett and frequent collaborator Simon Farnaby. If you're a fan of Bergerac, you'll love Mindhorn, the 80s sci-fi cop who can see the truth. Someone who is a big fan of this film is musician, producer, and podcaster Ricardo Autobahn, AKA John Matthews, who joined us to discuss his love for the Isle-of-Man-com. As well as Mindhorn, we chatted at length about 00s cult sitcom Nathan Barley, which, of course, starred Julian Barrett and was ahead of its time, to say the very least. Hey everyone, welcome back to another review and today, we'll be discussing the sequel to one of the most consistent franchises in films right now. Paddington and Paddington 2 are both some of the best family movies of the last decade. The thought of doing a third film is definitely terrifying because of how it could affect this franchise's track record but also because Paul King wasn't coming back for this third entry, although he still has a story credit. He went off to work in the Chocolate Factory. As I'm now studying in the UK, I had the chance to see Paddington in Peru. Does this movie cement the Paddington trilogy as one of the best of all-time or is the absence of Paul King felt? This time on 15, Luke and Dan rattle off their reviews for three recent films that they should have got round to critiquing sooner. Firstly, Luke gets frustrated by Wonka, the musical fantasy film directed by Paul King, who co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby. The picture tells the origins of Willy Wonka,  featuring his early days as a chocolatier. Starring Timothée Chalamet as the title character, and with an ensemble cast including Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman and Hugh Grant, it is the third live-action film based on Roald Dahl's novel. Next up is the film that grabbed everyone's attention, Saltburn. Emerald Fennel's second offering is black comedy psychological thriller featuring Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant. The film focuses on a student at Oxford University who becomes fixated with a popular, aristocratic student who later invites him to spend the summer at his eccentric family's estate. Then, after a handy tip off from Luke, the pair discuss Theater Camp, a 2023 American mockumentary comedy film directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman. The movie follows the counsellors of an underfunded theatre-focused summer camp as they band together with the founder's son to keep the camp afloat. To wrap up the show, they agree to quickly review two extra films that the other has no interest in seeing. Dan shares his disappointment with Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. Whereas Luke recommends Air, the film that's based on true events about the origin of Air Jordan, a basketball shoe-line. Wonka is a 2023 musical fantasy film directed by Paul King, who co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby based on a story by King. The film stars Timothée Chalamet in the title role and an ensemble cast including Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Natasha Rothwell, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Grant. It is the third live-action film based on Dahl's novel, following Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). Development began after Warner Bros. Pictures reacquired the rights to the character in October 2016 and announced that the film would serve as an origin story. While the film tells a standalone story with no connection to prior adaptations, King developed Wonka to exist as a "companion piece" to the 1971 film by reprising some of the music, thematic elements, and visual design of the Oompa Loompas. In May 2021, Chalamet was confirmed to be portraying Wonka and the supporting cast were announced in September of that year. Filming began in the United Kingdom in September 2021, taking place in Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, in Watford, as well as Oxford, Lyme Regis, Bath, St Albans and at the Rivoli Ballroom in Crofton Park, London. The original songs for the film were contributed by Neil Hannon, while its original score was provided by Joby Talbot. Wonka had its world premiere in London at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, on November 28, 2023. It was released in the United Kingdom on December 8 and in the United States on December 15 by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film has grossed $469 million worldwide and received generally positive reviews from critics. For his performance, Chalamet was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. The film also received two Critics' Choice Award nominations for Best Young Actor/Actress for Lane & Costume Design. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcorn-junkies/message

"The Phantom Of The Open" tells the unlikely true story of Maurice Flitcroft, a British golfer who, with no prior experience, managed to sneak his way into the pros and received the worst score ever recorded at the Open Championship. His determination to keep on playing and improve made him an inspiring figure for many to this day. Director Craig Roberts ("Tolkien") and screenwriter Simon Farnaby ("Paddington 2") came together to tell his story, and they do it with precision, liveliness, and delight. Both of them were kind enough to spend time talking about how they came across the project, working with Mark Rylance and Sally Hawkins, what they hope audiences will take away from Maurice's story, and more. For the first episode in our three-part Brit Picks series, Brendan brings forth the most critically-acclaimed sequel in recent memory (or possibly ever) known as Paddington 2. The guys talk about the beautiful colour palette in the movie, Hugh Grant's criminally underrated performance as the villain, the multiple visual references to silent films and Charlie Chaplin in particular, the movie feeling like a warm ball of comfort and much more. Plus - Jason is pretty sure that Mrs. Bird is a pimp.   Next week: Brit Picks continues with Jason's pick - Monty Python and the Holy Grail.   Full List: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BFI_Top_100_British_films Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/forscreenandcountry Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/bfi_pod Our logo was designed by the wonderful Mariah Lirette (https://www.instagram.com/mariahhx)   Paddington 2 stars Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Simon Farnaby, Peter Capaldi, Hugh Grant and the voices of Ben Whishaw, Imelda Staunton and Michael Gambon; directed by Paul King.

Ee arr, our kid. Yow wo' believe it, but we've only gon' an' published anuva bostin' episode! Ark at four half-soaked wallies blaberen about films an' that in a Failed Critics Dudleycast. Only kidding. The main feature of this week's podcast is a triple bill on British comedy films post-1980s in honour of Julian Barratt and Simon Farnaby's newest hilarious collaboration, Mindhorn. Tony Black, the mastermind behind the popular X-Files podcast, The X-Cast, joins hosts Steve Norman and Owen Hughes to discuss the Isle of Man-caper Mindhorn, whilst Underground Nights co-host Paul Field is back on the fetishist documentaries, specifically On Tender Hooks - who knew the suspension capital of the world would be Birmingham? Elsewhere on the show, Owen dismays everybody by not-disliking last week's quiz booby-prize, The Most Hated Woman In America, before chatting about noir classic The Night of the Hunter; and Steve invents (and finishes) a brand new Denzel Washington game after watching Déjà Vu. With John Wilson. Prima Ballerina Tamara Rojo will be the new Artistic Director of English National Ballet, it was announced today. She discusses what this means for her dancing career and how she intends to strike the difficult balance between choreographic innovation and balancing the books. The children's TV series Horrible Histories returned this week, offering a comic take on often gruesome parts of the past. Series producer Caroline Norris and actor Simon Farnaby talk about how they take inspiration from adult shows such as Blackadder, and the role of their musical numbers, including turning RAF fighter pilots into a dancing boy band. The new film Mozart's Sister argues that she - like her brother - was a musical prodigy, but was prevented from performing or composing because of the period's repressive attitudes towards women. Nicholas Kenyon, managing director of the Barbican Centre, London, reviews. Roger Ballen's photographs of working-class white South African life are renowned for their square, black and white format, and uncompromising subject matter. As a retrospective of his 30 year career opens at Manchester Art Gallery, he reflects on how he hopes his camera captures the souls of his subjects. Producer: Philippa Ritchie.
