Alex Strathdee is no ordinary writer. That's because he's as much an entrepreneur as he is a writer. How do we know this? Because when he wrote his book, Experience Over Degrees, and it didn't transform the world—or even his life—he didn't just shelve the book and the experience like most people.Instead, he asked: how can I get more people to see this? What followed was a targeted campaign to colleges and then a targeted campaign to businesses to pay for that first campaign. It's an ingenious approach and he breaks it all down in this episode. Now he helps other authors make an impact with his company, Advanced Amazon Ads and he even has a free gift for YOU where he breaks down his strategies. Dr. Steffanie Strathdee is Associate Dean of Global Health Sciences and Harold Simon Distinguished Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. She co-directs UCSD's new center for Innovative Phage Applications and Therapeutics (IPATH), Global Health Institute and the International Core of UCSD's Center for AIDS Research. An infectious disease epidemiologist, she has spent the last two decades focusing on HIV prevention in marginalized populations and has published over 600 peer-reviewed publications. She has recently begun working to move bacteriophage therapy into clinical trials at IPATH. She has co-authored her memoir, The Perfect Predator: A Scientist's Race to Save Her Husband from a Deadly Superbug. In this podcast we talk about Dr. Strathdee's experiences learning about bacteriophage (phage) therapy treatment through a personal experience where her husband became extremely ill from antimicrobial resistant bacteria. She learned that stigma in part was how phage therapy had become forgotten in North America--stigma toward scientists with different beliefs and training than the mainstream, stigma toward viruses that maybe perceived "at the borderline of life", and stigma toward research based on geopolitics (including the "Russian taint"). Steffanie inspires listeners with her discussion of the power of global collaboration, advocacy in healthcare, and the importance of making (rather than waiting for) miracles to happen. Are you a self-published author who's struggling to get your book in front of more eyeballs? This week's guest on Decode Your Burnout is Alex Strathdee, an Amazon ads expert who debunks the myths of what it takes to be a successful author. These tips will be relevant to you as an entrepreneur even if you're not an author.   At 21, Alex convinced 11 colleges to send his book to 40,000+ students across the US. Now, he's the founder of AdvancedAmazonAds.com (200+ books and $300,000+ in ad spend) where he helps authors get their books read. He works from various countries from around the world. A minimalist at heart - everything he owns fits into a backpack and duffel bag. When he's not working, you can find him sitting out on a surfboard, waiting for the next big wave.   Myth 1: All you have to do is put your book on Amazon and it's going to sell. The truth is that you need to be specific, know who your audience is so you can speak their language when you market to them.    Myth 2: What works for one author will work for another. Each book is different so you need a more targeted approach when it comes to selling it.  Find out what your ideal reader is searching for so you can have ads that include those keywords. This is true in business when it comes to your ideal client because your niche will set you apart and make your offer relevant. Myth 3: When it comes to Amazon ads, you have to go big or go home. It's better to start small and get some data before you outsource Amazon ads to someone else. You don't have to do it all yourself.   Resources: Kindlepreneur.com - free resources for authors including a free Amazon ads course To sign up for newsletter and to register for Alex's free course on Amazon ads: advancedamazonads.com Reach out to Alex to see about fit: alex@advancedamazonads.com Download a copy of the Burnout Checklist at: www.drsharongrossman.com/burnoutchecklist Watch the video of this episode: https://youtu.be/Gs2DnP0eOXI Sign up for a free Breakthrough Session with Dr. Sharon: http://www.bookachatwithsharon.com/

Jessica Strathdee worked on a typical dairy farm in New Zealand. The animals were not intentionally abused, and they had access to the open green fields so often associated with the pastoral practice of dairying. However, Jessica's retelling of her experience on the farm is horrifying. It's not the farm she worked on—it's the system. There is no way to obtain cows' milk for human consumption without participating in truly exploitive acts. Jessica is not an animal-lover, nor is she a bleeding-heart emotional activist. She's a regular person who thought cows' milk was perfectly normal, noble even, until her work experience revealed the truth. Mr. Strathdee was involved in a group assault at a downtown Edmonton apartment with at least four other men. Several victims were stabbed – one fatally so. He was charged with second degree murder, manslaughter, one count of break and enter, and three counts of aggravated assault. At trial, he was acquitted of second-degree murder, manslaughter, and break and enter with intent. He was convicted on all three counts for aggravated assault as a party to the offence under section 21(2) of the Criminal Code, having been involved in a group assault. With respect to the murder charge, the trial judge found as a fact that only one person could have caused the victim's death and that no one else applied force to him. As such, under section 21(2)(a), Mr. Strathdee could not be found liable where the cause of death could have only been inflicted by one person. In that regard, an acquittal was entered. The Crown appealed the acquittal on the homicide charge and the appellant cross-appealed his convictions for aggravated assault. The Court of Appeal of Alberta found that the trial judge erred in her application of the law on joint participation, ultimately allowing the Crown's appeal. The Court held that because of the judge's finding of a group assault, she ought to have assessed Mr. Strathdee's liability as a joint principal, and that the Crown was not required to prove that Mr. Strathdee personally applied force to the deceased. The acquittal was set aside and the Court substituted a conviction for manslaughter. Mr. Strathdee's cross-appeal was dismissed.Mr. Strathdee appealed his conviction for manslaughter as of right. At issue before the Supreme Court of Canada is whether the trial judge erred in her application of the law of joint principals.

The appellant was charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault and breaking and entering with intent to commit an indictable offence. A group of at least five men, including the appellant, entered an apartment and began assaulting the occupants. Four occupants were stabbed, one of whom died of a single stab wound. The trial judge found that the members of the group, including the appellant, had a common purpose to assault the occupants of the apartment and to assist each other in that purpose, and she found the appellant guilty of three counts of aggravated assault as a party to those offences under s. 21(2) of the Criminal Code. Concerning the murder charge, the trial judge reasoned that an accused cannot be found liable as a joint principal under s. 21(1)(a) of the Code where the cause of death could have only been inflicted by one person. The trial judge acquitted the appellant of both second-degree murder and manslaughter, and also acquitted him of break and enter with intent. The Crown appealed the manslaughter acquittal, and the appellant cross-appealed his convictions for aggravated assault. The Court of Appeal for Alberta found that the trial judge had erred in her application of the law on joint participation and allowed the Crown's appeal, set aside the acquittal, and entered a conviction for manslaughter. The appellant's cross-appeal was dismissed, and his convictions for aggravated assault were upheld. "This is the worse superbug you can get," said her husband's doctors when diagnosing him with a life-threatening multidrug resistant bacterial infection.  But Steffanie Strathdee put her research skills to work and eventually was able to convince doctors to treat him with an experimental phage therapy that ended up saving his life. Listen and learn Why no other solution was working to cure her husband of this superbug, How the history of phage therapy versus antibiotics has played out, and Why the problem of antibiotic resistance may be addressed by utilizing bacteriophages. Steffanie A. Strathdee is the Associate Dean of Global Health Sciences and the Harold Simon Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. She helped found and co-directs UCSD's new center for Innovative Phage Applications and Therapeutics (IPATH) and also works with the Global Health Institute and the International Core of UCSD's Center for AIDS Research.  An infectious disease epidemiologist, she's also the author of The Perfect Predator, which tells the story of her husband's struggle with a superbug and the successful effort to help him recover with phage viruses. Phages are viruses that infect bacteria, and are emerging as a potential winner as scientists struggle with how to prevent superbugs from causing deadly infections.  She gives listeners a fascinating history of how politics and war kept phage therapy out of American medicine for decades. First discovered by a French Canadian microbiologist, their adoption by Russians pre-World War II marked them as off-the-table for the American medical field. But they are emerging again as having great potential, and Steffanie Strathdee helps enlighten listeners by describing the process and why they can be effective. First, scientists are able to pick and choose their phages, testing to make sure what bacteria the phages will infect. They can get specific, killing only the bacteria they want to target. Ideally, they'll collect a couple of different phages for the best chances of success, then make isolates of them.  The most difficult stage is the purification, she says. Scientists are moving ahead, designing clinical studies. Listen in for more exciting news about this life-saving treatment. No story of antibiotics would be complete without the rise of resistance. As promised in our last episode, this week we dive into what the WHO calls ‘one of the biggest threats to global health, food security, and development today’ - antibiotic resistance. In the decades since their development, misuse and overuse of antibiotics has led to many becoming all but useless, and our world seems on the verge of plunging into a post-antibiotic era. How does resistance work? Where did it come from? Why did it spread so far so rapidly? Is there any hope? In this episode, we answer all these questions and more. First, we explore the many ways bacteria evade the weaponry of antibiotic compounds. Then we trace the global spread of these resistant bugs by examining the major contributors to their misuse and overuse. And finally we assess the current global status of antibiotic resistant infections (spoiler: it’s very bad) and search for any good news (spoiler: there’s a lot!). To chat about one super cool and innovative alternative to antibiotics, we are joined by the amazing Dr. Steffanie Strathdee (Twitter: @chngin_the_wrld), Associate Dean of Global Health Sciences, Harold Simon Professor at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and Co-Director at the Center for Innovative Phage Applications and Therapeutics. Jessica Strathdee worked on a typical dairy farm in New Zealand. The animals were not intentionally abused, and they had access to the open green fields so often associated with the pastoral practice of dairying. However, Jessica’s retelling of her experience on the farm is horrifying. It’s not the farm she worked on—it’s the system. There is no way to obtain cows’ milk for human consumption without participating in truly exploitive acts. Jessica is not an animal-lover, nor is she a bleeding-heart emotional activist. She’s a regular person who thought cows’ milk was perfectly normal, noble even, until her work experience revealed the truth. Now the founder of Mothers Against Dairy New Zealand, she’s using her knowledge of the industry to fight back against the cruel system she was once part of. What we discuss in this episode:   - The process of dairying in detail   - A day in the life of a dairy farm worker   - The challenges faced by the dairy community   - The moment Jessica realized dairying was wrong   - The slaughter that results from the dairy industry   - Jessica’s unique form of activism   - Mothers Against Dairy New Zealand   Connect with Switch4Good   - YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ2toqAmlQpwR1HDF_KKfGg   - Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Switch4Good/   - Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/switch4good/   - Twitter - https://twitter.com/Switch4GoodOrg   - Website - https://switch4good.org/

Today I'm talking with Mark Strathdee, founder of Sherpa Digital Media, a video platform designed to engage and entertain your audience. Think of a webinar platform that's engaging and catered to the individual. Mark and I talk about some of his daily habits, notebooks, his background in journalism, and how COVID-19 has made Sherpa insanely busy. We discuss the history of video and how it's changed over the last ten years. As an example, YouTube has taught us that content does not need to be perfect to make an impact. Everyone can have a voice and that voice can come from anywhere. His passion is to make tools for people to find and share their voice. We talk about why he still likes quality journalism as well as the importance of being responsible for using your voice and influence. Now more than ever, COVID-19 is accelerating the move to more media experiences that are customized and streamed right into your living room. Attention is the most valuable commodity that media creators need to try and capture. At Sherpa, they use Artificial Intelligence to look for trends and opportunities to craft a unique experience for individuals that are looking for information about a brand or product. Mark uses physical notebooks and time management to make sure that he's working on the right things. In particular, he likes to write down the night before what he has to do the next day so that he's focused on that instead of the 100's of emails in his inbox. Mark does not want his inbox to dictate his day. He also uses his notebook as something that's just for him and will not distract him when he's creating something in it. Now, let's get better together. Actions to Try or Advice to Take Time management is all about where your boundaries are. You need to manage your endless todo list. Literally schedule the time to turn off your work and remind you to spend time with those you love. Write down your next day's focus: Before bed, write down what you need to focus on the next day and what you are concerned about. Then, focus on that before you read any email. An email is a communication tool (kinda cold) as opposed to a physical notebook that allows you to use your free hand to create something for you and only you. Read a physical book at night: A physical book is for you and only you. It won't distract you and will calm your mind. There are no distractions in your notebook. Your notebook is only for you. Get out and walk the dog in the fresh air and leave your phone behind. Sherpa takes a consultative approach and they never demo during the first contact. This takes longer to work with Sherpa but this allows them to figure out what keeps them up at night. Video and live events are stressful and unique moments in time for most people and that makes it fearful. Sherpa wants to reduce that. In the first of a four-part series, UC San Diego epidemiologist Steffanie Strathdee and psychologist Tom Patterson start the story of how their research teams have traced the spread of HIV in Tijuana. It opens at a wound clinic in El Bordo, the section of the Tijuana River Canal where migrants and others shoot heroin and, in some cases, share needles. Dr. Patricia Gonzalez-Zuniga offers first aid as she and her staff recruit participants into Strathdee’s Proyecto El Cuete, a study which focuses on HIV prevention for people who inject drugs. Also featured is the inspiring Susi Leal Ricardi, an HIV-positive outreach worker who was once addicted to heroin and had lived in El Bordo. Leal overcame her addiction, has been clean for 14 years, and with the help of antiretroviral drugs, she has fully suppressed her HIV. She is now El Cuete’s “star promotora.” The HIV/SIDA series is based on the book “Tomorrow Is a Long Time.” Series: "UCTV Prime" [Public Affairs] [Health and Medicine] [Show ID: 30005]
