Building a legacy goes beyond financial wealth—it's about laying a foundation that allows future generations to start from a stronger position. In many families, financial wisdom is passed down, equipping children with the knowledge to navigate life with greater stability. However, for those who didn't inherit that guidance or resources, every step toward financial literacy and long-term planning becomes a step toward breaking cycles.   True success isn't just measured by personal achievements but by the ability to create opportunities for those who come after us. This can be done through education, mentorship, or by teaching problem-solving skills. Remember, legacy-building is an intentional act. It ensures that today's sacrifices pave the way for a better future—not just for our children, but for generations to come.   In this episode, I continue my special conversation with my dear mother, Dorothy Burgess. We talk about the lessons she has learned in life, the challenges of being a first-generation professional, and the importance of hard work. She shares her thoughts on education, raising children, being a grandmother, and why family time matters. Join us for a heartfelt chat about family, perseverance, and the values that shape our lives.   "Never forget to come together and bond as a family because that connection is essential. Family shapes identity, values, and aspirations. It's where love, sacrifice, and resilience take root, shaping who we become.   It's in the quiet moments—the shared meals, the bedtime stories, the reassuring words after a hard day—that character is built. The lessons aren't always spoken, but they are lived. A parent's unwavering support, a grandparent's wisdom, a sibling's laughter—these form the foundation that steadies us through life's challenges.   Family teaches perseverance in the face of setbacks, generosity in times of need, and the importance of standing together. It reminds us that we are never alone, that we carry within us the strength of those who came before us.   The true legacy of a family isn't measured in wealth or achievements, but in the values passed down—the love that endures, the lessons that guide, and the bonds that remain unbroken through time.   In this special episode, I sit down for a heartfelt fireside chat with my first and most influential teacher—my mother, Dorothy Burgess. We reflect on my early years, from being homeschooled at the kitchen table to the many lessons learned through bumps and bruises. She shares the sacrifices she made to put family first and how her love for education shaped my journey. It's easy to believe that some things are meant for others—those who appear more qualified, more prepared, or more deserving. But the reality is, no one is more deserving of growth, joy, and success than anyone else. The doors that seem closed may not be locked; they may only require the courage to push them open.   There are gifts within each of us that are meant to be shared. Talents that were never meant to be hidden. The world is filled with places where those abilities belong, waiting to be used in ways that haven't even been imagined yet. The only thing standing in the way is the belief that they don't.   Stepping into more isn't just about achieving a goal or reaching a new milestone. It's about shifting perspective—seeing possibility where there once was hesitation, recognizing that every challenge is also an invitation to rise. Growth isn't just for the people who seem ready; it's for anyone willing to take the first step.   The path forward doesn't require perfection—just a willingness to believe that more is meant for us. And when that belief takes root, everything begins to change.   In this episode, I share my unforgettable first-time experience at the Super Bowl—an event that's so much more than just a game. Many are familiar with the idea of sowing and reaping—everyone gets excited about the harvest. But what about the process of cultivation? Cultivation involves nurturing something from its early stages, requiring patience, persistence, and dedication before the fruits of labor can be reaped. When pursuing a goal, it's easy to focus on the end result, but the real work happens in the cultivation phase. Success doesn't happen overnight, and sometimes the road is longer and more difficult than expected. But those who stay strong long enough to endure the challenges are the ones who will ultimately see their dreams come to fruition. So, as you reflect on your goals for the year ahead, remember that cultivation is an essential part of success. It's not always glamorous, but it's where the real growth happens. Can you stay strong enough, long enough to endure the process and continue working toward your dreams? The answer to that question will shape your path to success. In this week's episode, I reflect on the lessons of 2024 and the importance of cultivating your dreams. As the year wraps up, I highlight the hard work it takes to keep moving forward, whether celebrating big wins or simply surviving. Strength doesn't come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn't. We all are faced with certain obstacles in life that affect our decisions and challenge our patience. Sometimes, it feels overwhelming, but they all teach us something important. They help us align our dreams more closely with the reasons we pursue them and  make us more grateful even for the little unnoticeable things.   As we continue to walk this journey, having the right people beside us can make all the difference. Realizing that we can do something on our own but having mentors makes the process so much easier. Remember, every challenge we allow ourselves to be refined by is what makes our story unique and relatable. When people see us face difficulties and come out stronger, it motivates them to do the same. Our experiences can serve as a reminder that everyone struggles, but it is how we respond to those struggles that defines us.    In this episode, I'll share the key lessons from my keynote speech at the National Medical Association in New York City. Speaking to young orthopedic surgeons, I reflected on my journey, from overcoming challenges as a first-generation physician to finding mentors who shaped my path. I'll also discuss the rewards and realities of working in sports medicine, from professional team experiences to daily patient care, along with insights on balancing family and career. How often do we let the allure of our dreams distract us from the hard work required to achieve them?   Many people get caught up in the word "dream." It evokes images of grandeur and a life of ease, leading many to envision their future successes without recognizing the sacrifices and determination required to attain them. While having dreams and goals is important, focusing too much on them can distract us from the crucial work necessary to turn those aspirations into reality.   This disconnect between dreaming and doing can lead to a cycle of frustration, as we become so enamored with our visions of success that we overlook the disciplined effort needed to reach our destinations. Therefore, it is essential to establish a clear plan that outlines actionable steps toward achieving our dreams. Additionally, developing this perspective enables us to focus less on the idealized outcomes of our dreams and more on the process of growth and learning that comes from pursuing them. In essence, while dreams can serve as powerful motivators, they should not overshadow the hard work required to realize them.   In this solo episode, I will share the importance of taking action and putting in the work to achieve our goals. We'll explore how focusing solely on dreams can be a distraction and how every great achievement starts with a single step. Tune in as we learn about the value of self-reflection, taking action, and the practical steps required to manifest personal and professional growth.   "Be prepared, and when opportunities arise, you'll feel more comfortable grasping the concept. What keeps athletic trainers going despite the challenges? The hours may be long and the pay may be low, but the passion for helping athletes drives every dedicated athletic trainer to keep showing up. Athletes face many challenges, from intense physical strain to mental pressures that can affect their performance and well-being. They push their bodies to the limit in pursuit of excellence, often risking injuries that can sideline them for weeks or even months. However, their journey becomes more manageable with the unwavering support of athletic trainers.   Athletic trainers are the unsung heroes who stand by every athlete. Along with their many challenges, athletic trainers face a tough reality: long days filled with rigorous demands, heart-wrenching injuries, and a salary that often doesn't reflect the time and energy they invest in their work. Their job can be physically draining, requiring them to stay on their feet for hours, and emotionally taxing as they support athletes through painful recoveries. Moreover, the behind-the-scenes nature of their work can lead to feelings of being unrecognized or overlooked. Thus, we must recognize that behind every successful athlete is a team of dedicated professionals working tirelessly to ensure they remain in peak physical condition.   Mr. Brady Howe is a certified athletic trainer, certified strength and conditioning specialist, and the esteemed Director of Sports Medicine at Grand Canyon University. With a wealth of experience in the field, Mr. Howe previously served as the Vice President of Health and Performance for the Phoenix Suns. In that role, he combined his expertise in sports medicine and strength and conditioning to oversee the Suns' performance department. He has recently transitioned from covering the men's three-on-three basketball team at the Olympics.   In this episode with Mr. Brady Howe, we will explore his journey in sports medicine and athletic training. He shares his experiences working with high-level athletes and discusses the importance of the relationships he built along the way. We'll learn about his passion for helping athletes recover from injuries and prepare for competitions. Mr. Howe will also talk about the challenges and rewards of his work, including the hard work that often goes unnoticed. Are we doing enough to ensure our young athletes are truly protected and supported on their journey?    When it comes to sports, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the game and overlook important health aspects. The thrill of competition, the adrenaline rush of scoring points, and the camaraderie with teammates often take center stage. However, maintaining proper health practices is crucial not only for peak performance but also for long-term well-being.   One of the most overlooked aspects of sports is injury prevention. While many athletes focus on building strength and improving skills, they may fail to prioritize essential things like preparing their physical and mental health for the demands of the sports. Hence, parents must play an active role in ensuring that their children are taking the necessary steps to stay safe and healthy. Remember, prioritizing health in all its forms is the key to sustainable success on and off the field.   Rebecca Turner, MS, RDN, LD is an author, registered dietitian nutritionist, radio host, television presenter, and board certified in Lifestyle Medicine (DipACLM). She offers no-nonsense nutrition guidance through print, TV, and radio, challenging the world's version of wellness. You will find her on social media and the radio talking about meaningful things, with interesting people, underscoring there is more to good health (and life) than weight loss.    In this episode, I'll share key insights from my recent interview on the "Good Things" podcast with Rebecca Turner. We talked about sports medicine, focusing on issues like heat exhaustion and overuse injuries in young athletes. I also offered practical tips for parents on handling sports-related pain and injuries in kids, and highlighted the importance of proper medical evaluations and athletic trainers. This episode provides valuable insights for parents, coaches, and sports fans to support and protect young athletes. Challenges are something we all face at some point in life, but it's how we respond that defines us. We've all encountered moments of self-doubt, times when the challenges before us seemed insurmountable, especially when stepping into roles or opportunities that feel beyond our reach. When faced with these obstacles, it's easy to question whether we have what it takes to succeed. This doubt can feel overwhelming, but it's important to remember that these are just tests along our journey, not permanent barriers.   Thus, it is important to approach failure with a mindset geared toward learning and growth. Viewing challenges as opportunities rather than threats can significantly change our experience. Many of us are driven by the desire to excel in our careers, personal lives, and hobbies. While ambition can lead to great achievements, it can also become overwhelming. Indeed, the more we take on, the harder it becomes to maintain balance. We might start to feel like we're constantly running on empty, struggling to keep up with all our commitments. However, there is a danger in trying to do everything and be everything to everyone. When we stretch ourselves too thin, we jeopardize our own well-being. In our pursuit of meeting every demand, the quality of our work and relationships can suffer, despite our best intentions. Thus, the desire to be successful in every area of life is noble, but it's crucial to recognize that our capacity is limited. Therefore, it's important to set realistic boundaries and prioritize what truly matters. By acknowledging our limits, we can focus our efforts on the areas that align with our core values and long-term goals. Remember, finding a balance between ambition and self-care isn't about giving up on our dreams but about ensuring we pursue them in a healthy and sustainable way. Conflict is not a hurdle to be overcome, but a pattern to be understood; it is through the examination of these patterns that we unlock the truly creative potential of our challenges. We see conflict in various facets of our lives, from personal relationships to professional environments. In these spaces, conflict often arises from differences in values, goals, or communication styles. Yet it is precisely these differences that offer fertile ground for growth and innovation.   Many conflicts we encounter often intensify because we tend to concentrate on defending our own stance instead of trying to understand the perspective of the other person. Hence, our defensive approach can create a cycle of misunderstanding and frustration, where both parties feel unheard and undervalued. Therefore, we must adopt a mindset that prioritizes understanding over winning. Remember, resolving conflict is not about proving who is right or wrong but about finding a way forward that respects the needs and perspectives of everyone involved. By cultivating a mindset that seeks to understand and learn from conflict, we can transform it into a powerful catalyst for personal and collective growth.   Jennifer Jones-Patulli is a conflict management and leadership development consultant with a passion for transforming conflict into a productive force. In 2019, Jennifer founded Productive Conflict LLC, where she combines complexity thinking, conflict resolution, and power dynamics to help clients foster better collaboration, increased productivity, and stronger organizational relationships. Each time we face a fear, we learn more about our strengths and weaknesses, refining our skills and gaining confidence in our abilities. Fear is a natural reaction when we face something unfamiliar or challenging. From the anxiety of speaking in front of a crowd, the nerves before a big exam, or the discomfort of stepping out of our comfort zones, fear can feel like a heavy burden. When we find ourselves in situations that seem overwhelming or beyond our control, it can be tempting to doubt our abilities and consider giving up.   However, it's often in these scary moments that we experience the greatest growth. When we push through our fears and face these challenges head-on, we uncover our true capabilities and strengths. Moreover, finding support from others can make a big difference. Surrounding ourselves with people who believe in us and offer encouragement helps us stay motivated. Their support can provide a boost when we are feeling low and remind us of our potential when we start to doubt ourselves. Ultimately, overcoming fear requires a combination of self-belief, perseverance, and a strong support network. As we navigate through life's challenges, we develop a deeper understanding of our own strengths and weaknesses.    Dr. Manju Dawkins is a caring doctor and mother who knows how scary needles can be. Her journey started when she saw the fear in her daughter's eyes during her first shots. As a dermatologist, she used numbing creams to ease the pain, but she knew it wasn't enough. She saw that untreated pain was a common problem in medical care for both kids and adults. To find a better solution, Dr. Dawkins started Thimble. Thimble is changing how needle procedures are done, aiming to remove the pain and fear from shots and blood draws. Their solutions make these experiences more comfortable for everyone, helping patients and their care teams, and improving overall public health. Dr. Dawkins is dedicated to making sure no one has to endure needle pain and fear. Her work at Thimble is helping millions of people have a better, less painful healthcare experience.   In this episode with Dr. Manju Dawkins, we will learn about her inspiring journey of perseverance, hard work, and believing in oneself despite the challenges and doubts from others. Throughout the episode, Dr. Dawkins discusses the value of embracing challenges, learning from failures, and the need to quiet external noise to listen to one's inner voice. She also touches on the significance of taking breaks and allowing time for recovery, both physically and mentally, to maintain long-term health and well-being. Dr. Dawkins' journey is a testament to the fact that with the right mindset, support system, and determination, one can overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams.    “A lot of people have opinions about you but they don't know you and what's inside of you. So take the time to quiet your noisy mind to know what you're capable of, what you're meant to do and what you deserve.”– Dr. Manju Dawkins   Topics Covered: (00:00:34) Introducing our special guest, Dr. Manju Dawkins  (00:01:13) A journey from sports to medicine (00:03:05) Mindset of a Challenger (00:05:15) Listen to yourself (00:06:34) Celebrate small wins (00:07:32) The Role of Supportive People (00:08:33) Embracing endless growth  (00:12:09) Love and compassion in healthcare (00:15:09) What is medical dermatology? In a world where we're expected to mask our struggles behind a white coat or a suit, finding the courage to be an open book is truly commendable. We all have struggles and setbacks in different forms. Some of us face challenges in our careers, others deal with personal issues, and many of us encounter both at the same time. Whether it's grappling with addiction, experiencing job loss, or dealing with health crises, the journey through these trials can be incredibly tough.    Many of us compartmentalize our pain until it overwhelms us, but acknowledging our challenges is the first step towards healing. When we begin to openly recognize and talk about our difficulties, we take a significant step toward recovery. Embracing this openness allows us to seek the support we need from mentors, coaches, and loved ones. By sharing our experiences and vulnerabilities, we break down the walls of isolation and build connections with others who may have faced similar struggles and provide them with grace we have received.Remember, it's through understanding our struggles and reaching out for support that we transform our challenges into strengths.    Courtney Barrows McKeown, MD is a board-certified general surgeon. Time is our most valuable asset, but when we don't make the most out of it, regret may overcome us. Every moment wasted is an opportunity lost, and the weight of missed chances can be a heavy burden to bear. Sometimes, we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, forgetting to spend time with loved ones and making the most of what we're capable of in making a difference in the world and the lives of others.     As was the life of Big Daddy, a shining example of how to use time wisely. Big Daddy lived his life to the fullest, always making sure to spend time with his family and help those in his community. He showed us that the best way to use our time is by building strong relationships, giving back, and leaving a positive impact on the world. He made sure his family felt loved and supported, and he worked hard to improve the lives of everyone around him. Thus, his legacy teaches us that time spent helping others and standing up for what is right is never wasted.   I'm thrilled to share an episode that is deeply personal and significant to me. In this episode, I reflect on the final moments I shared with my grandfather, Charlie Burgess Sr., affectionately known as Big Daddy. This reflection isn't just about personal memories but about the legacy he left behind—a legacy that goes beyond financial inheritance and encompasses family values, rituals, and making a lasting impact on the community. Join me in this heartfelt episode as we celebrate the incredible legacy of Charlie Burgess Sr., a man whose life embodied the spirit of service, love, and community. Every pursuit, no matter how humble, deserves the touch of greatness. Achieving greatness is a challenging pursuit. Some people may perceive it in ways that seem easy to reach and attain, but in reality, greatness demands every possible effort you can give. It's like climbing a mountain. If you want to reach the top, you can't just sit down and hope someone will carry you up. You have to keep pushing yourself, even when it's tough. You can't just sit back and expect greatness to come to you. You have to work for it every day.   Sometimes, when people see the weight of effort greatness requires, they tend to quit striving and settle on being just an average in their chosen fields. Sure, it might seem easier to just coast along, doing the bare minimum, but deep down, you know you're capable of more. Therefore, dream big and give your very best in all that you do. Always remember that everything starts in our minds, the plans, visions, and steps. We are capable of being our best version if only we begin looking at things through the lens of positivity and continuous learning despite the adversities.    Dr. Eric Peters is a pharmacy entrepreneur, real estate investor, public speaker, pharmacy consultant, and owner of Lagniappe Pharmacy in Louisiana. Dr. Peters is a New Orleans native and started his pharmacy journey at Xavier University of Louisiana. His stores have been instrumental in the COVID-19 vaccine distribution in underserved communities.   In this episode with Dr. Eric Peters, we talk about many important things that can help you succeed in life. Dr. Peters shares how having supportive and encouraging friends has helped him stay focused and driven and how a positive mindset can help us overcome challenges and reach our full potential. Behind every victory, there is a story of sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering support from those who champion our dreams alongside us. Marriage is a commitment many of us take for granted. We often focus on the visible accomplishments and accolades, forgetting the countless moments of quiet support and sacrifice that made those achievements possible. Some of us fail to appreciate our spouses and end up regretting the missed opportunities to express gratitude and love.   Hence, we must realize that marriage goes beyond just feelings and requires love in a deeper sense. It includes daily effort, understanding, constant support, patience, and a willingness to put the partnership above individual desires — which often involves sacrifices and some compromise. It's about being there for each other through good times and bad, celebrating victories together, and comforting each other during failures. So, dear friends, if you are considering marriage, find someone who not only makes you happy but, most importantly, someone who strives to bring out the better version of you.   In this special episode, I will share with you the things I want to celebrate as a father and a husband, the lessons I've learned, and the things in my marriage that shaped me into the person I am today. I also want to highlight my heartfelt appreciation to my wife throughout the fifteen years of our marriage for being the anchor of our family and for her unwavering love and support. Embracing opportunities often means stepping out of our comfort zone. Perfectionism can be a hindrance, but seizing the moment opens doors to unforeseen successes. Starting something new can feel scary, like taking a plunge into the unknown. Whether it's writing a book, starting a business, or launching a podcast, it's natural to feel uncomfortable. But it's in those moments of discomfort that we find growth.    However, many of us fall into the trap of perfectionism, where we get stuck in wanting everything to be just right before we even begin. This mindset can hold us back from starting something new or taking the first step. While we are waiting for the perfect moment, which may not come, we miss out on opportunities along the way. Therefore, we must learn to embrace imperfection and take action despite our fears. Instead of waiting for everything to align perfectly, we should focus on progress over perfection.    In this special episode, I will share with you my journey over the past three years of podcasting, the reasons why I started, and the incredible opportunities it has brought me. I will provide insights on why podcasting has been a game-changer for me, offering a platform to establish authority, expand my network, and connect with incredible individuals from various fields. I also want to reach out to young physicians to join our upcoming virtual seminar, "The Home Stretch." This seminar aims to equip you with essential knowledge on contract negotiations, debt management, investing, and entrepreneurship, helping you navigate the early stages of your medical career with confidence and clarity. Medicine is indeed a noble profession, one that transcends the boundaries of science and reaches into the depths of human compassion. Physicians are not merely practitioners of medicine; they are healers, caregivers, and advocates for the well-being of their patients.  It requires years of intense study, training, and examination. But becoming a doctor is just the start. After medical school and residency, physicians continue learning and developing throughout their careers, exploring new paths and discovering more about themselves along the way.   Doctors need to be strong and flexible to do well in a healthcare world that's always changing and often confusing. They have to face problems with bravery, keep going even when things don't work out, ask for help when they need it, and understand that changing jobs is normal in healthcare. This helps them become even better at what they do. Therefore, doctors must possess not only clinical expertise but also resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace change.    Amy Vertrees MD is a General Surgeon, Surgeon Coach, Author of "Become the BOSS MD", Keynote speaker, and Founder of BOSS Business of Surgery Series. With a deep understanding of the challenges physicians face beyond the operating room, Dr. Amy is dedicated to empowering her peers to take control of their careers and thrive. Drawing from her own journey and years of expertise, she understands that residency training only scratches the surface of what it takes to succeed in the medical field. It became her mission to guide fellow physicians toward becoming the BOSS MD they aspire to be. Her approach is not just about surviving in medicine but thriving—with Dr. Amy's guidance, physicians can regain autonomy, find balance, and rediscover the joy in their profession.   In this episode, I will share with you an interview I had with the Business of Surgery Series podcast with Doctor Amy Vertrees. Some of the key themes that emerged from our discussion were the importance of adaptability and resilience in the face of unexpected changes, the emotional toll of job loss and career transitions in medicine, and the art of physician contract negotiation. We also talked about the intricacies of navigating career transitions in the medical field, drawing from my own experiences and insights gained over the years. Tune in to learn how to thrive amidst uncertainty and change.   "What we have to learn in practice is how to run and build a practice. "Success is not reaching the top of the mountain; it's the passion of each step climbed, the resilience shown in the face of adversity, and the growth experienced with every stumble." In seasons of achievements and successes, some of us fail to take a pause and appreciate our triumph. We become so fixated on reaching the pinnacle of our ambitions that we overlook the beauty of the journey itself—the trials, the triumphs, and the transformations that occur along the way. No wonder many of us find ourselves feeling unfulfilled even after reaching our goals. Because when we fail to recognize the value of the journey, we rob ourselves of the opportunity to fully appreciate our achievements.   Therefore, we must realize that the true beauty of achievement lies not in the attainment of a goal, but in the transformation that occurs within ourselves as we strive towards it. We are often advised to focus on the goal but I want to encourage you to focus more on the journey. To appreciate our progress of being better in what we do. To continue pursuing a goal despite having no one to give you a round of applause or a tap on the back. Take full advantage of every opportunity to succeed and know that no matter what your level of success is, you will always be enough. Hence, as we continue on our respective paths, let us embrace the journey, celebrate our successes, and strive for even greater heights.   In this solo episode, I will share with you my realizations in this graduation season, reflecting on the significance of milestones, the journey beyond them, and how we can navigate life's transitions with purpose and gratitude. I want you to take a moment to appreciate the success and its genuine sense, since many of us fail to acknowledge our progress in our pursuit to achieve every goal we have on our checklists. Buckle up and discover the hidden gems within the journey towards our dreams.   "Many times, in life, we don't take the time to appreciate what we've accomplished or what we achieved." – Dr. Derrick Burgess   Topics Covered: (00:00:48) The Graduation Season (00:01:39) Appreciate your progress (00:03:54) How do you nurture your gift? Success in real estate requires more than property acquisition—it demands strategic thinking, calculated risk-taking, and disciplined execution. Real estate is a vehicle of wealth creation that offers ordinary individuals the opportunity to build financial security and generate lasting prosperity. Unlike other investment avenues, real estate provides tangible assets that can be leveraged for rental income or sold for substantial profits.   However, achieving success in real estate goes beyond simply buying properties. It involves careful planning and strategic decision-making in providing a space for relaxation, reflection, and wellness. By leveraging real estate investments wisely, ordinary individuals can unlock opportunities for financial security and prosperity that extend far beyond traditional investment avenues. Hence, investors must understand market trends, assess property value, and manage properties effectively to maximize returns. Simply acquiring real estate isn't enough; it's about leveraging opportunities and managing assets wisely to realize the full potential of real estate investments.   Dr. Rachel Gainsbrugh is a full-time mother, wife of eighteen years, pharmacist, CEO, and founder of Short-Term Gems. She has established herself in the market as a Luxury Short Term Rental host and coach for busy professionals. She is an immigrant who took a small rental and built it into a multi-property seven-figure real estate business. She has been hosting since 2019 and serves guests in vacation rental markets and those who need short-term housing rentals for business. Today, Dr. Rachel is a healthcare professional by day, a short-term rental investor by night, and a mom 24/7.   In this episode with Dr. Rachel, we will learn about the transformative power of real estate investments in achieving financial freedom. Dr. Rachel's journey from pharmacist to successful real estate entrepreneur exemplifies how strategic investments and thoughtful management can pave the way to significant financial milestones. Dr. Rachel emphasizes the critical role of education and networking in real estate success. Through ongoing learning, mentorship, and collaboration with industry experts, she has honed her investment strategies and adapted to evolving market conditions. In life, we are often faced with numerous and various decisions that can shape our path and influence our future. Decision-making is one of the crucial parts of our lives.  Each choice we make determines our direction and the path of our journey.  Some circumstances may not involve significant choices,  but others  may require us to step out in faith, get our knees on the ground, and raise our hands in surrender to the almighty God who is always in control. Life is a choice.  The greatest mistake a man can ever make is choosing to live his life apart from God's guidance and grace. Therefore, we should possess a humble heart that acknowledges the wisdom of God in every circumstance whether  favorable  or unfavorable. Though some things in this world may cause us trouble and discouragement, still, we have peace that passes all understanding, knowing that we are never alone.  The eyes of our Lord are always on us. Thus, may we all find the courage to walk in faith and embrace the transformative power of God's guidance in every decision we make.   Pastor Wesley Thompson is a loving husband, father, educator, author, activist, chaplain, political candidate, pastor, and faithful man of God. He is a native of Florence, Alabama. He is the senior pastor and teacher at Bethel Colbert Missionary Baptist Church and previously served as a youth pastor and interim pastor in his eleven years of ministry. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of North Alabama and a master's of divinity degree from Mercer University. He is pursuing a doctor of ministry degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center. He has worked as a college admissions recruiter and adjunct professor. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., NAACP, the Academy of Preachers, and various community service organizations. He is married to Le'Tanndra Thompson, and they have three sons.   In this episode, we will revisit a conversation I had with Rev. Wesley Thompson over a year ago and learn how faith in God guided him through the complexities of decision-making amidst the darkest moment of his life. He underscores the significance of seeking divine direction, aligning decisions with personal aspirations, consulting trusted confidants, and how God can lead us towards paths of hope, healing, and purpose. Rev. Thompson's testimony serves as an inspiration to all who listen, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, faith can lead us to hope, healing, and unexpected blessings. Tune in to gain a wealth of wisdom on the impact of faith on decision-making during life's darkest moments.     “When making decisions, it's usually going to be uncomfortable when you're more than likely to not be guaranteed one way or the other and that's where the faith piece comes in.”   Topics Covered: (00:01:43) Ask God for direction (00:03:16) Where faith comes in (00:04:36) The doubts of starting a podcast (00:06:33) Introducing our special guest, Rev. Being an athlete isn't just about being good at sports. It's about discipline, hard work, and dedication. Athletes put in countless hours of practice, endure physical challenges, and learn valuable lessons about teamwork and perseverance. But what happens when the final whistle blows or the last match is played? For many athletes, the transition from sports to the next phase of life can be daunting. However, it's essential to recognize that being an athlete teaches valuable skills that can be applied beyond the field or court.   Being an athlete involves more than just excelling in sports since it requires preparation for life beyond the game. By prioritizing education, cultivating a strong work ethic, and building a support network, athletes can position themselves for success both on and off the field. Remember, talent is essential, but it's dedication and hard work that ultimately led to lasting achievement.   Coach Tony Thompson is a father, sports coach, podcaster, and the president of The RIZE Nil sports agency, which connects athletes and brands to maximize exposure to clients worldwide. The "RIZE NIL" is a sports marketing agency focused on making sure our clients receive revenue opportunities for the work they put into expanding the Brands' image. They also assist their clients in being part of an excellent opportunity to extend their careers as collegiate student-athletes while helping brands succeed in the marketplace.   In this special episode, I will share a candid conversation on the Pull Up podcast, where Coach Tony and I discussed a wide range of topics, from the intersection of sports and medicine to the importance of academics for student-athletes. We'll talk about how women's sports, especially basketball, are changing and what that means for upcoming players in terms of both potential and obstacles. We also had the opportunity to hear from Suzette, my daughter, who shared her passion for basketball and her aspirations for the future. Get ready for an engaging conversation about life, sports, and medicine, and how they all intersect to shape the future of athletics.   "Talent will get you so far but your work ethic has to meet your talent level at some point." – Dr. Derrick Burgess   Topics Covered: (00:01:12) Welcome to the Pull-Up Podcast Show (00:03:13) All about Dr. Derrick Burgess (00:05:34) Single Sports Specialization (00:07:10) How Dr. Burgess developed his interest in medicine (00:10:18) Prepare for life beyond sports (00:13:22) Professional mentality and work ethic (00:17:10) Advertisement: Are you prepared for life's unexpected challenges? You have to hang up the cleats and what's next." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "I don't discourage athletes, but I allow them to start thinking beyond the basketball court." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "It's devastating when you're dealing with 13- to 15-year-old young ladies and you're telling them, hey, your knee will never be the same." – Dr. Derrick Burgess   Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess: Website: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drderrickthesportsdr/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeOut.SportsDr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrick-burgess-72047b246/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHGDu1zT4K_X6PnYELu8weg Email: thesportsdoctr@gmail.com   This episode of TimeOut with the SportsDr. is produced by Podcast VAs Philippines - the team that helps podcasters effectively launch and manage their podcasts, so we don't have to. “Perfection is the illusion that stifles authenticity while embracing imperfection. It is the gateway to genuine self-validation and growth.” In a world fixated on perfection, where every flaw is magnified and every misstep examined, it's easy to lose sight of our inherent worth. Oftentimes, we end up focusing more on other people's achievements rather than the unachieved expectations we have for ourselves. It gradually coats our hearts with jealousy. It eats away our self-esteem, leaving behind a bitter residue of bitterness and negative self-talk. And there's no easy way out of this den.   Hence, we must cultivate a mindset guided by self-compassion and realize that we can be more of what we perceive ourselves to be. Instead of focusing on what we haven't achieved and waiting for other people's approval, we must learn to see opportunities for growth and give ourselves a high five, especially amid tough times. Indeed, we are stronger than we think, and we have the power to overcome any obstacle that comes our way. We are our own beacon. Remember, self-validation is the key to overcoming insecurities and building a stronger sense of self-worth.   In this Part 2 Book Review episode of The High 5 Habit: Take Control of Your Life with One Simple Habit, I will continue to empower you with insights and practical strategies to cultivate self-validation, banish negative self-talk, and embrace the power of positive affirmation. The episode touches on the importance of recognizing insecurities, understanding the source of jealousy, and embracing our inner strength and worth. Tune in to gain a wealth of wisdom on how to celebrate our achievements, overcome obstacles, and live a life of purpose and fulfillment.   "You're not going to always feel motivated, but still, you have to move forward." – Dr. Derrick Burgess   Topics Covered: (00:00:00) Part 2 Book review: The High 5 Habit (00:02:30) Who are you jealous of?
