Does your dog have chronic yeast outbreaks, ear infections, or tummy problems that go away after a round of antibiotics, only to come right back after you stop using them? Have you spent hundreds, if not thousands of dollars at the vets, on supplements, and trying every diet imaginable, but you still can't get on top of your dog's symptoms? Then you NEED to listen to this conversation I had with veterinarian Dr Neal Loh. Dr Neal is a holistic and integrative vet based in Perth, Western Australia, who uses Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine approaches to support his clients and get to the root cause of health imbalances. Honestly, Dr Neal gives us a TCM 101 course in this episode, it is so chock full of helpful information! * He shares his journey into both conventional veterinary medicine, and why he switched to a Traditional Chinese Medicine approach. * He also talks about how stress - ours and our dogs' - is at the heart of so many health challenges our dogs face * And we do a deep dive into one of the most common and pervasive pathogens in TCVM: dampness. * You'll learn what dampness is, where it comes from, and how it contributes to some of the most common conditions, including yeast, chronic ear infections, as well as chronic and sporadic gut problems. And you'll also learn how food therapy approaches can be really helpful in supporting your dog if they suffer from dampness. To learn more about Dr Neal, to book a telehealth session with him, as well as order his Healing with Real Food Guide Book, visit his website https://www.holitreats.com.au and follow him on Instagram https://instagram.com/neal.holisticpetvet. Today we are doing a deep dive into all things kidney disease: what it is, how it is diagnosed, and how to prevent and manage it with fresh food! My guest is my canine nutrition mentor, colleague, and friend, Katie McCaul! Katie is an esteemed canine nutrition professional who uses her background as a veterinary nurse, as well as her studies in human naturopathy specialising in nutrition, and animal behaviour and physiology to bring both a holistic and evidence-based approach to how we support our dogs' health and wellbeing through fresh food. Katie has held roles in research and development, as well as formulation for several companies in the pet food industry. She also consults directly with clients who need nutrition support. Katie has conducted research projects, and has been part of the raw feeding veterinary society. Katie is also super passionate about education and teaches vets, vet nurses, and other canine professionals about fresh feeding. I couldn't think of anyone I would rather chat with about kidney disease than Katie! Katie and I pack so much helpful information in here to give you a better understanding of what kidney disease is, how to interpret what the lab results are telling you, and how you can best support your dog through a fresh food diet. You'll learn: * The various roles the kidneys play, and how kidney disease affects them * What factors can cause kidney disease * Kidney disease symptoms and how it is diagnosed and Staged (and why blood test results might not always be a true indicator of kidney disease) * How reducing stress and anxiety in your dog can help support the kidneys * And we answer the question,”Can we replicate what prescription kidney diets are doing with fresh food instead?” (Spoiler Alert! Not only can you match what prescription kidney diets offer, but you can do even BETTER with a fresh food diet for kidney disease, and we'll walk you through how and why!) We share some great tips on foods to add into your dog's diet, and answer common questions around whether or not you need to restrict certain nutrients and when. It's my hope that this episode provides you with some new, helpful perspectives on how to prevent and manage kidney disease, and that in doing this it takes away some of the fear that I know firsthand comes with a kidney disease diagnosis. There really is SO MUCH we can do to help dogs with kidney disease live long and healthy lives, so grab a pen and paper! You'll want to take notes! You can learn more about Katie and how to work with her to support your dog by visiting her website http://mypetdiet.co.uk/ If you do have a dog with kidney disease and you would like some more information on anything Katie and I went over, including my resource on my favourite kidney disease supports from a TCVM perspective, please reach out. It's really exciting for me to introduce you to today's guest, Hannah Zulueta! Hannah is a certified canine nutritionist, and is currently studying to become a doctor of acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Herbalism for the human end of the leash. You may know Hannah from her popular blog and Instagram account, @dailydogfoodrecipes where she shares how she applies a Traditional Chinese Medicine approach to health and feeding her own dogs, Maggie, Orbit, and Mr Higgins. Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, or you might see it abbreviated as TCVM is really coming into the mainstream of holistic dog care. I invited Hannah to come and have a conversation with me to unpack what this really means and looks like on a practical level. Something that I just love about Hannah's approach to feeding your dog, and to TCVM, is her focus on simplicity. She says that if you can feed yourself and your family, you can feed your dogs, too, and I wholeheartedly agree. We talk about Hannah's own journey into TCVM and canine nutrition, starting with how her family fed her dogs while growing up in Papua, New Guinea. She shares the fundamentals of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it came from as a medicine for the common people, and how you can begin applying its principles to your own dog's health to restore harmony. Hannah also addresses how she would approach the top health issues that you told me you have with your dogs: allergies, yeast, and anal glands, oh my!I absolutely LOVED talking with Hannah. She is so wise, and gracious with her energy. I know you're going to love this episode, too! To learn more about Hannah and her TCVM approach to canine nutrition, visit her blog: https://dailydogfoodrecipes.com, or connect with her on Instagram https://instagram.com/dailydogfoodrecipes If you'd like to dive a bit deeper into TCVM, Hannah has a wonderful community with mini-courses on specific topics related to caring for your dog with TCVM. Dog prostate cancer can be missed because early symptoms look like simple UTIs, but when Renée Michael felt something was wrong with her beloved Roscoe, she didn't wait. A full veterinary workup at Louisiana State University revealed prostate cancer. Over the next 21 months, Renée learned a ton about the treatment options from prostate cancer, the value of having both an oncologist and a holistic vet on the care team, and how she could support Roscoe's wellbeing at home with diet and supplements. In this episode Renée shares some of her insights into anti-inflammatory foods and immune support supplements that she feels Roscoe, as well as recipes for some of his favorite treats. She also talks about the work that she has done to promote dog prostate cancer awareness and help other dog lovers get an early diagnosis and support their dogs throughout treatment. Her Sweet Roscoe adopted her on Mother's Day 2011 when he was approximately 3 years old. He was her goofy clown when things were good and her rock when her life fell apart. At the end of Feb 2020 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer so Renée started researching everything she could. They did SRT radiation but she's against chemo so foods and supplements were her main focus. She worked closely with the awesome TCVM vet at LSU who taught her a lot, and said Renée even taught her some things. Roscoe gave her 21 months before looking into her eyes on November 12, 2021 and saying “Mom I can't go on any more.” Some people encouraged Renée to write a treat book (being a Basset Hound Roscoe LOVED his treats and she was inspired by her late husband Mike when she came up with Roscoe's treats). The treat book morphed into Roscoe's Cancer Journey, a free pdf, that is now hopefully helping many many pups and their parents. Dr. Susan Howell was raised in Washington State. She got her undergraduate degree in Fine Arts, then moved to Fairbanks, Alaska with her husband and worked as a veterinary technician for a number of years before returning to get her veterinary degree from Washington State University in 1997. After graduation, she worked in a number of small animal practices in Washington as well as the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area. There she developed an interest in holistic medicine and began her journey. She was employed by the Standard Process Company to support Veterinarians by giving lectures in the field as well as answering technical questions. She was certified in Acupuncture and Chinese Veterinary Food Therapy by Chi University in 2017. In 2017, she also opened her own holistic practice in White Fish Bay, Wisconsin. Thrive Holistic Veterinary Care provides complementary veterinary care with a focus on Nutrition Response Testing, functional nutrition, TCVM food therapy, and acupuncture. Veterinary Acupuncturist Dr. Erika Halle joins Angela today on It's A Dogs Life! After a youth spent being driven to achieve a veterinary degree, Dr. Erika found herself floundering in her first year of veterinary school. She had worked so hard to get there, and once there she discovered that she was utterly bored with the conventional solutions to pet health issues that she had come to be familiar with. For a few months, Erika considered dropping out and changing careers altogether until a classmate reintroduced her to her curiosity about complementary and alternative treatments. Suddenly a holistic veterinarian was born! Dr. Erika believes that conventional medicine has its place and is extremely important but, for many conditions, offers limited options. Because of this, her career has been dedicated to holistic medicine since before its official start. Dr. Erika graduated from Oregon State University in 2010 with her veterinary degree. Shortly afterward (2 months later) she completed the final session of the Chi Institute’s mixed animal acupuncture certification course where she learned the basics of acupuncture and traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM) for cats, dogs, horses, and other animals. Afterward, she continued her training by moving to Canada to work with the founder of the first established holistic veterinary clinic in British Columbia. Dr. Marlene was one of the groups of veterinarians who were the first generation of North American veterinarians trained in acupuncture, and she passed the wisdom of her many years of TCVM experience on to Dr. Erika.

She describes the issues related to diet and how most pet foods lead to chronic illness, and how to easily improve the diets of your pets, no matter what your lifestyle. We talk about the fact that most pets she treats have similar issues to their owners and why that is. Josie shares about her own heartwarming path to finding Traditional Chinese Medicine, flower essences, gem elixirs and the results she's seen with not only animals but also in her own life.

Alt-Vet- The Revolutionary Pet Care and Longevity Solution. explores the alternative therapies that are available to your pet through a network of alternative veterinary medicine practitioners throughout the country, but offers some simple and safe therapies you can do at home with your pet that will them maintain a high level of health and happiness. TCVM is not some new concept- it has been practiced for thousands of years, yet surprisingly, many Americans have not heard of it or tried it with their pet. Alt-Vet contains real life stories of animals that have been brought to my clinic by pet owners that were looking for some hope of saving their animal, reducing their pain, and increasing their quality of life. Many of those pet owners come in skeptics and leave believers. Alt-Vet offers chapters on pet massage, healing diets and emergency response care. The techniques offered are low cost and simple to implement. It is the goal of this book to inspire pet owners to embrace a holistic lifestyle for their pets and in the process to extend their furry companions' quality of life. My life passion is to heal animals and the information in this book will hopefully multiply the number of pets that get to feel better and live healthier happier lives.
