How do you know when it's time to walk away from a dream? As a business owner and entrepreneur, we are driven by our passions to our goals we set for ourselves. However, sometimes we have to quit and start over. Pivoting (quit by a different name) means course correcting due to either external, or internal factors. Wayne Hartley Jr., owner and founder of Happy Hearts Pet Care ATL, joins the show to share how he quit his dream of mobile grooming to start a brick and mortar business. Wayne sacrificed a lot to make it happen, but it was all because he recognized he needed the change to better connect with his mission. He gives advice on how to keep moving forward, even when you're exhausted, and how to innovate well in your business. Main topics: Moving to brick and mortar Taking risks FLIG Beaten down Innovating Main takeaway: The difference between acting out of desperation and focused intentionality, is the belief you have in yourself and the goal you're working towards. About our guest: My name is Wayne Hartley Jr. I am a Registered Veterinary Technician. Pet Care has always been a passion of mine. Since I was young I've always loved animals — both learning about and taking care of them. I have graduated from THE Fort Valley State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Technology. I have worked in various veterinary settings from the largest multi-specialty emergency hospital to general practices, other referral hospitals, and university settings such as the University of Georgia's Veterinary Teaching Hospital. When not working, I have volunteered my time at wildlife conservation centers, adoption agencies, dog daycare, cat sanctuaries, and with the Boys and Girls Club as well as Habitat for Humanity. Giving back and working with the community has always been another passion for me. It makes my heart happy to be able to be a blessing for someone else. (see what I did there). After being a veterinary technician for 7 years, I began Happy Hearts Pet Care as a mobile grooming service in 2016 and moved to a brick and mortar location in 2022. I also founded PETLANTA, a community of pet care professionals in Atlanta that come to support each other, network, teach, and give back to the community. I now have the opportunity to share my love of animals with my clients and pet owners all over the Stone Mountain and Metro Atlanta area.  Links: Previously on: https://www.petsitterconfessional.com/episodes/224 Website: happyheartspcs.com Youtube: youtube.com/channel/UC7v4FA7Qs1C3BaVGJ2VB2bQ Facebook: facebook.com/happyheartspetcareatl Instagram: instagram.com/happyheartspetcareatl/ PETLANTA: https://petlanta.org Buy PSC Merch Give us a call! I realized my love for canine rehab and massage while volunteering at a canine rehab facility in 2012 when I took my own dog in for rehab.  I wasn't able to pursue school at that time and went on to work as a veterinary assistant while being trained as a technician on the job. While learning valuable information about the veterinary field and gaining vast experience working in general practice, I felt I was missing out on a passion that I had grown to love.  I went on and graduated from New England Institute of Technology with an Associates in Science Degree in Veterinary Technology, as well as going to the University of Tennessee for Canine Rehabilitation.   My love for helping geriatric patients and other arthritic dogs lead me to go on and become certified in canine massage at the Brandenburg Massage Therapy program.  I worked in a rehab facility in Massachusetts since 2014 and continued on to do the job I love fitting in massages anywhere I can whether it be in the pool, underwater treadmill, draped over an exercise ball or on a bed.   https://www.pawsitivehealingtouch.com/about-me

Well, the awards for 2021 were announced via a webinar event. The NZVNA and Hill's Veterinary Nurse of the Year Award was launched in 2013 to recognise New Zealand veterinary nurses who advocate and significantly contribute to the care of their patients, and who are an integral part of the veterinary health care team.As you'll hear, Margie took a somewhat circuitous route to reach her vocation as a veterinary nurse. Margie holds two Bachelor degrees:  a Bachelor of Science plus a Bachelor of Veterinary Technology.  Today she works as a companion animal vet nurse at The Strand Veterinarian in Auckland's Parnell.  We jump into the conversation here where I ask Margie when she knew she wanted to be a vet nurse.LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODEDr Megan Alderson - morning ritual of turning the clinic phone off for 10-15 mins/daySophie Kennedy - Vet Clinic sustainability VetStaff leading veterinary sector recruitment in New Zealand | veterinarians | locums | nurses

She's been in on some of the weirdest dog-related stories we've ever heard, from a bulldog whose vomit smelled like wine (but wasn't) to finding a cat in the most unexpected place you can imagine. Along the way she has tons of advice about hazards our pets face during the holiday season and how to avoid them … from strangling Christmas lights to tinsel to pancreatitis problems. She also offers advice about how to evaluate your own pet insurance needs and touches on the business of pet insurance itself, and how the “wide open market” in the U.S., where only 2% of pet owners have it, is attracting opportunists. An enlightening and entertaining conversation with a woman who has dedicated her career to helping people in crisis help their pets. After the message, Joseph talks about a traditional, Scottish festival he was attending, with concerts and kilts galore. Then, Joseph introduces the guest of the episode, Joetta Newman. Joseph asks her where she grew up in Kentucky and what it was like. She talks about how she got into the outdoors, explaining how she expressed little interest in the outdoors growing up, contrary to who she is now. They transition into Joetta's veterinarian degree and what she did as a veterinarian before heading to the break.Segment 2Returning from the break, Joseph wanted to learn about how Joetta met her late husband, Denver Holder. She recalls it was during her time doing search and rescues where she would volunteer to, as she describes it, train dogs in hide-and-seek. Her most memorable rescue was a lost old man who wanted McDonald's and some love. Joetta then talks about geocaching, a sort of scavenger hunt in which the player would explore the environment using GPS and apps. Joetta depicts her experience in getting over her fear of guns and learning how to shoot. This sparks a discussion on guns and the experiences between the two before going to a commercial break.Segment 3Coming back, Joseph asks Joetta how she created her business, Mountain Girl Outdoors. She explains how when she got more involved with the outdoors, more women were also asking about the outdoors so Denver and Joetta started up the business in response. She goes on to describe the different programs they offered, the firearms program becoming more and more popular. Now, they offer outdoors, photography, and more. Joseph switches the conversation to her part in turkey conservation. She explains her role in bringing the turkey population back up and succeeding, now having more restrictions on turkey hunting. She also talks about public events offered by her business, although right now, they only offer classes and private lessons.Segment 4Back from the final break, Joseph asked about Joetta's involvement in her time as a circus photography. She explains how her friend was a part of a circus, and she was offered to take pictures of them, leading to Joetta traveling with them for a while. Joseph then wanted to know Joetta's ideal itinerary in Canton. She talks about her ideal breakfast, lunch, and dinner spots along with activities to do in between everything. These can include walks in different parks and axe throwing. They finish off with where they can find Joetta and her business.

Blunt Dissection: The best minds in veterinary medicine, academia & business profiled so you can learn from their experience.

On today’s show, I’m joined by Veterinary Technician, campaigner and veterinary Instagram celeb Nicole LaForest. Nicole is a co-owner, manager and Licensed Veterinary Technician for Mayo Veterinary Services - a large mobile surgery practice in Seattle. She graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Technology from Penn Foster College, is licensed in both California and Washington State and spent several years working in emergency medicine as a lead technician. Her clinical work at the mayo is focussed primarily in the fields of orthopaedics and regenerative medicine. Away from her practice, Nicole is very active in the wider veterinary community serving as the president of the Washington State Association of Veterinary Technicians, and also campaigning personally to raise awareness, standards and opportunities for vet technicians around the planet. Her passion in doing so has attracted a large social media following where she chronicles her life in practice and courageously discusses her issues with mental health in the hope that others may battle their own demons. Now, just before we jump into the episode here’s a quick word from today's show sponsor the VetX:Thrive community. If you are a young vet looking to find your feet in veterinary medicine, grow your confidence, avoid burnout and beat your inner imposter, then VetX:Thrive is for you. As a community member, you’ll receive success-skill training modules, monthly access to experienced mentors and incredible toolkits to help you thrive in your career. A year-long membership of the community is available for just $275 and if you use the promocode ‘podcast' then you will receive a further 10% discount. Head to www.vetxthrive.com to redeem this offer and take control of your career. A conversation with a veterinary technician on Blunt Dissection is long overdue so it was great to bring a different perspective to the show. In a virtual world where filters and selfies are the norm, Nicole’s brand of visceral story-telling stands out and has won her a 20,000+ fan base. Her frequently edgy posts chronical a journey off the beaten path, they are educational, engaging and gritty – displaying an authenticity and a rawness that scream’s “take me as I am, warts ‘n’ all”. Nicole, it’s safe to say, is not afraid to call a spade a spade. But she is also a warm-hearted and incredibly bubbly person to spend time with. And so it was in our conversation where she left nothing on the field. We covered a lot of ground, with subjects as diverse as managing burnout, drug addiction, crazy clients, how she keeps a life working with her husband fun. So without further ado, it gives me huge pleasure to bring to you, my conversation with Nicole LaForest.
