Conditioning for Canine AthletesHost Laura Reeves is joined by Dr. Ashley Nixon to discuss conditioning our canine athletes, whether for the show ring, dock diving, agility and more."Cardio's good for everybody," Nixon said, "but I think it's really important to consider the sport you're doing and what you're asking your dog to do. They can be cardiovascularly fit, but maybe they don't have the propulsion to do some dock diving or agility, right? So I think it's super important to kind of keep that in mind and not just say, hey, I walk my dog, we go for a run, we're fit, we're good."I like a ton of stuff you can actually do at home with basic equipment (for conditioning work). You can have them do some push-ups on an unstable surface, like a little exercise ball. You can have them pivot. It's great. Front end up, back end up. I love sit to stands for these guys and you can do a ton of different variations. You can have them do it on a mattress, Fit Bones are great. Cavalettis are great for these guys. You can especially pick up some changes in their gait or change their gait."(Cavalettis) are super versatile and if you want some flexion, you can have serpentines over the cavalettis and arrange them in, you know, semi circles, get some nice spinal flexion. Like that."Listen to the full episode for more from:Dr Ashley Nixon DVM, CVA, CVMRT, CVSMT, FCOAC, CAMP, CSCCChief of StaffDr. Ashley Nixon knew she wanted to be a veterinarian since she was just 3 years old. That passion inspired her to obtain her DVM from St. Matthew's University School of Veterinary Medicine, and complete her clinical year at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She received her CVMRT (massage & rehabilitation) and CVSMT (spinal manipulation) certifications from the Healing Oasis, and was trained and certified in veterinary acupuncture at the Chi Institute of Traditional Veterinary Medicine. She passed additional testing to become a fellow of the College of Animal Chiropractors, and received a certification in arthritis management. She is certified in arthritis case management. Dr. Nixon has a special interest in sports and conditioning, and is certified through NC State. Prior to the ATC, she most recently worked at a specialty referral practice in the south as a rehabilitation veterinarian. She is active with multiple dog sports.

In this episode of the EquiConnect Podcast, host Dr. Mike Pownall welcomes Dr. Esther Millares from McKee Panel Equine Services - Campbellville to discuss the emerging field of orthobiologics. The conversation delves into the definition, applications, and benefits of orthobiologics like Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), IRAP, and ProStride for treating equine musculoskeletal issues. Dr. Millares explains how these regenerative therapies work, their advantages over traditional treatments, and common misconceptions. The episode emphasizes the importance of consulting veterinarians for proper diagnosis and personalized treatment plans.Dr Esther Millares started her professional career after graduating in 2012 in Madrid, Spain where she did an equine rotating internship at the Alfonso X El Sabio Veterinary Teaching Hospital. During this time, her interest in sport medicine and equine surgery increased and she decided to pursue a career in sports medicine. She then started a second internship at Paton & Martin Veterinary Services in Vancouver, Canada, an equine clinic with a large orthopedic and lameness caseload. During this experience, she was afforded the opportunity to work with elite sport horses that suffered a range of orthopedic injuries and allowed her to refine her lameness skills.Afterwards, she completed a two-year Equine Sports Medicine Fellowship and a one-year Equine Field service Fellowship (Junior specialist) at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of California-Davis, USA. Are you curious about how to apply food-as-medicine to your furry friends? Want to know more about the optimal diet for dogs? Looking for information on reducing toxicity when it comes to flea, tick, and heartworm prevention? Tune in to hear us interview Laurie Johnson DVM, Integrative Veterinarian and cover all this and more!    In this episode, we pick Dr. Laurie's brain about everything from assessing your pet's constitution to how to transition to a raw or real food diet. We discuss supplementation when it comes to your pet, how you can individualize your pet's preventative regimen, and how to best work with your veterinarian to get the best care for your pet!    Dr. Laurie's Bio: Dr. Laurie Johnson is an integrative veterinarian practicing in Austin, Texas (AcuDog HerbalCat Vet). She is certified in Acupuncture, Food Therapy, and Tui Na from the Chi Institute, and Integrative and Chinese Herbal Medicine through the College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies.   She has over 15 years of experience with a diverse background in wildlife, emergency, shelter, small animal medicine, dermatology, soft tissue surgery and dentistry.    Find her at: AcuDog HerbalCat - Veterinary Medicine in Austin, Texas   Also in this episode:  Keto Reset Program Starts 8/21 Dr Laurie's Story TCM and Assessing ConstitutionEpisode 383: Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Optimal Diet for DogsSoCal Raw Fed Dogs Instinct Dog Food Smalls (cats) A Pup Above Chi Dog Farmer's Dog Petdiets.com Nom Nom Barking Creek Kitchen Just Food for Dogs Why Consider Delayed Spay and Neuter Gut Health for DogsRebuild Spectrum Probiotic GI Immune Builder Supplementation for PetsNordic Naturals Omega 3 Liquid Herbsmith Heartworm Prevention Flea PreventionWondercide   More Resources from Dr. Laurie: VDIlab.com:  lab that has a lot of special testing that most integrative vets have access to. I use them most for GI vitamins and allergy screening. Much more affordable than a standard lab.  DNA heartworm testing-  I've sent to Canada in past- very tricky with customs. Apparently Auburn offers this test. Any vet can set up an account with Auburn's lab to be able to run the test. Ideal when pet parents choose not to use a preventative. Detects living heartworm DNA - positive much sooner than standard testing. Heartworm - Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Animalbiome.com is an excellent company. tons of high quality research on microbiome health in dogs and cats and specific research on gut health with raw fed animals. Pet parents can test their pet's biome. I tend to recommend this with all of my GI cases, chronic skin, immune health cases. Results vary a lot. Some pets have severe e-coli overloads and practically zero beneficial bacteria so they need fecal transplants and specific pre/probiotic and fiber sources. Inulin might be a better fiber source than psyllium in some cases. Some pets don't have pathogenic bacteria but they have no good flora so they will also need fecal transplants. Best to work with a vet when this is needed as most of my patients need more support when they are undergoing fecal transplant. I reach for S boullardi /FOS a lot. This is not found in standard small animal formulas. Their product line is amazing! Vax/Titers: puppy /kitten vaccine protocol with titer testing recommendations from Dr. Jean Dodd's foremost authority on endocrine disease and immunology in small animals. One of her projects is the rabies challenge fund. vaccine protocol | HemopetPuppies and kittens need their vaccine series per the protocol to protect them from deadly diseases. We think of these as core vaccinations. We start them earlier in Texas because of the much higher risk here. These vaccines are extremely effective. I usually run titers when the pet has already had one 3 year vaccine because they tend to be better protected and if they are protected, we can run the titers every 3 years when the vaccine would be due.  Rabies is a legal requirement to prevent human exposure to this deadly disease. We have  a lot of rabies in Texas! Every year, there is at least one pet dog and multiple kittens or adult cats who test positive for Rabies in Austin. They are tested because of human exposure and they are euthanized so their brain tissue can be tested :( All healthy pets should be vaccinated at least twice before titers are run.  Titers can still be run but many clinics won't accept the titers. I am rabies vaccinated because I used to work with wildlife. We tested our titers regularly and when they were low, we got a booster. This is standard practice in the human field and may someday be the standard with small animals.  Interceptor dose example: Sharing this with y'all so you can see the calculation for Interceptor (milbemycin oxime) **Please note- the chewable pill cannot be broken because the medication is not evenly distributed** Jax weighs 80 # We convert his weight to kg= 36.4kg 36.4 x 0.1mg/kg = 3.64 mg- this is the bare minimum dose to prevent heartworms. I don't like to have such a narrow margin in case the dog gains weight or there is resistance to the drug and because we can't break the tablet, so I tend to dose at 0.2mg/kg - 0.3 mg/kg (instead of 0.5mg/kg)  So, his more appropriate dose is 7.3 mg- we round up to 8mg.  The 50- 100# dose is 23mg.  The 26-50 # dose is 11.5mg. It's the next size down.  11.5mg divided by 36.4 = 0.3 mg/kg dose so we're good!Note: The lower dose does not protect against hookworms according to the study, so you would need to be aware of this. Any dog with a history of hookworms needs the higher dose until 100% clear on antigen testing.    This episode is sponsored by: Noble Origins, an animal-based organs focused company serving up Nose-To-Tail Protein With Organs, Collagen, & Colostrum. Her career since graduation has been dedicated to working with sport horses all over the United States. In 2001 Dr Heart left the track to focus on other disciplines in the equine industry – a move motivated by the birth of her daughter Camille in 2000. She spent 6 years at a busy equine referral clinic in Illinois where she focused primarily on lameness. This move exposed her to the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques available in the sport horse industry. She was able to refine her skills in all imaging modalities and attend clinics devoted to lameness diagnosis and treatment.Dr. Heart began her training in Acupuncture at the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine in 2003 with Dr Huisheng Xie DVM, MS, PhD. She completed her certification in Veterinary Acupuncture in 2005. She is currently working on her Masters in Chinese Herbal Medicine at the Chi Institute. Let us know by shooting us a direct message on Instagram: @fdntraining.   About Dr. Roberts:   During her 30-year career as a DVM, Dr. Ruth Roberts has become one of the nation's foremost experts in holistic and integrative veterinary medicine. After graduating from North Carolina State University in 1990, Dr. Roberts began her career practicing traditional, Western medicine. The onset of simultaneous health challenges for both her and her dog Arnold, however, prompted Dr. Roberts to seek solutions outside of the traditional realm of veterinary care she had learned in her textbooks. Dr. Roberts furthered her education by absorbing the principles of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine at the Chi Institute in Florida. Her studies there would eventually form the foundation for her philosophy that “good health begins in the bowl.” She is certified in Acupuncture, Chinese Herbology and Food Therapy. In 2006, Dr. Roberts founded The Original Crockpot Diet and continues to see the dramatic results it makes in the health of her patients. She is a leading consultant in integrative veterinary medicine and advises clients in the United States and internationally through her website DrRuthRoberts.com. She found the CHI Holistic Health Institute through a podcast on the Dr Charlie Ward show, joined us as a patient, and eventually became a coach to help others find the root cause of their symptoms and detox their way back to a thriving life. Lisa struggled with chronic fatigue and underwent several expensive medical tests, totaling over $10,000…. but Western medicine couldn't find anything wrong. She eventually dropped her medical insurance and started taking care of herself, including doing parasite cleanses, which helped improve her health significantly. Learn how food sensitivity testing, adrenal fatigue diagnosis/treatment, and other health issues are not the REAL problem and are a waste of money to test, and what to do instead (HINT: address imbalanced gut flora, nutrient deficiency and toxicity). NOT a surprise: Western medicine often fails to provide adequate solutions for women's health issues. Learn the RIGHT lab tests to start with, so save money on unnecessary ones, and identify root cause issues and how to remedy them. Lisa shared that with the knowledge gained from testing, she was able to fine-tune her health and eliminate most of her symptoms. Through Lisa's journey, because of what she learned at the CHI Institute, to identify and treat root causes of health issues, such as toxins and trauma, rather than just treating symptoms, she was able to save her own life by following God's direction and finding the right path to healing through detoxing, gut healing, hormone balancing, mindset and behavior changes. LISA'S RESULTS Overcame Arthritis that had been lingering in her life for decades, without any help from Western medicine diagnostics, doctor visits nor drugs. Got rid of 30+ SYMPTOMS that nothing else worked to fix As a newly certified CHI Holistic Health Practitioner & Detox Expert, Lisa shared a success story about a client of hers who struggled with insomnia and anxiety for 15 years but was able to regulate their sleep and improve their mental health after going through The Warrior Cleanse and Parasite Full Moon Challenge. This podcast is FIRE where we highlight the importance of taking action and consistency in the healing journey, and the need to address all factors that may be blocking the body's natural healing process, which are JUST AS important as detoxifying the body, and what we teach in the institute. Your body is a MIRACLE made to heal, we just need to remove the S.H.I.T. in your body, interfering with it's ability to do just that. Enjoy the episode and may it IGNITE you into action. My name is Dr. Jennifer Remnes and my undergraduate studies were completed at the University of Illinois at Champaign- Urbana. I double majored in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Psychology with a minor in Chemistry. Believe it or not, I was on a pre-med track throughout college and planned to apply to medical school. I quickly realized humans are gross, and I am way more passionate about animals. I was inducted into the Phi Zeta National Veterinary Honor Society in 2014. I graduated from St. George's University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2015 following completion of my clinical year at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. The wonderful small town of Chambana gifted me with endless country nights at Kams I'll never remember with friends I'll never forget. The small Spice Island of Grenada will forever remain a second home for me. I was fortunate enough to experience an authentic Caribbean culture, obtain a PADI scuba certification and bring home the world's most handsome souvenir—my heart dog and Papillon, Nutmeg.  I was born and raised in Chicago, IL. Yes, Chicago, Chicago—not the burbs. I grew up a few miles west of Wrigley Field, and I'm absolutely ecstatic that I witnessed a Cubs World Series championship within my lifetime. Hey Chicago, what do you say? I live in the Windy City with my husband, Brad, and our Great Pyrenees rescue, Ophelia. Hi! My name is Dr. Jessica Trice! I graduated from Waubonsee Community College with an associate degree in Biological Sciences. I then received a bachelor's degree at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in Animal Science and Agricultural Consumer and Environmental Sciences. I graduated from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine. My multifaceted career has led me to wear many various hats in veterinary medicine, including Chief of Staff and Medical Director. I have also served as a member of the Medical Advisory Board for the Midwest and led a Mentorship Program for veterinary students and new DVM graduates. I proudly collaborated with Banfield Pet Hospital and co-authored a children's book called "My Very, Very Busy Day." You may have also viewed one of my many television media segments featuring pet current events, health and preventative care. My long time passion of incorporating integrative medicine with conventional veterinary medicine finally became a reality when I received my certification of Veterinary Acupuncture along with Herbal Medicine through the Chi Institute. Additionally, I also earned certification as a Veterinary Chiropractor in the specialized area of Applied Kinesiology through the Health Pioneer Institute. Together, we can take a whole-pet approach to your pet's therapy. My collaborative techniques blend Western medicine with holistic approaches to treatment.

Dr. Radica Raj started practice as a Veterinarian in general practice but soon embarked on a more fast-paced career in Veterinary Emergency Medicine and Critical Care in Ontario.Within a year of practice in this field she was inspired to start her own emergency facility and subsequently opened a second general practice. While this path provided the stimulus and the challenges she had yearned for, she soon realized that there had to be a better quality of life for terminally-ill patients, for the geriatric patients disabled by osteoarthritis and for the paralyzed patients that could not walk.Determined to explore these avenues and find answers, she successfully completed her post-graduate diploma in Veterinary Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCVM) with the Chi Institute in Florida. She then completed a program in Animal Chiropractic at Options for Animals in Kansas and obtained an animal chiropractic certification from the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association (IVCA).She then started Phoenix Rising Integrative Veterinary Care thereby opening the door to an integrative veterinary clinic on Vancouver Island. The still hazy legal status of cannabis makes advising clients about it darn near impossible. Dog lovers are left to figure out what to do on their own. With only product manufacturers to advise them, they can easily get bad, incomplete, or inaccurate advice. Cannabis in Veterinary Medicine a Critical Review, a brand-new publication, helps professionals sort fact from fiction. One of the paper’s authors, Dr. Trina Hazzah, returns to discuss their work. She is an integrative veterinary oncologist and co-founder of the Veterinary Cannabis Society, a non-profit that helps veterinarians and pet parents access credible, realistic, legally sound advice around medical cannabis use. In the paper, Dr. Hazzah and her co-authors lay out a road map of a sort for practicing veterinarians. They go over the description and structure of the endocannabinoid system, the pharmacologic effects of the active compounds, the potential uses, and the toxicities of cannabis. The purpose of the paper, and of this show, is to help clinicians get an overview and grounded understanding of the compounds so they can help their patients without reading thousands of papers on PubMed. The authors also address the very real issues around legal status and offer feedback and ideas for how to work with clients safely and legally. A must-listen show for anyone practicing veterinary medicine or asking their veterinarian about cannabis or CBD use. Veterinary Acupuncturist Dr. Erika Halle joins Angela today on It's A Dogs Life! After a youth spent being driven to achieve a veterinary degree, Dr. Erika found herself floundering in her first year of veterinary school. She had worked so hard to get there, and once there she discovered that she was utterly bored with the conventional solutions to pet health issues that she had come to be familiar with. For a few months, Erika considered dropping out and changing careers altogether until a classmate reintroduced her to her curiosity about complementary and alternative treatments. Suddenly a holistic veterinarian was born! Dr. Erika believes that conventional medicine has its place and is extremely important but, for many conditions, offers limited options. Because of this, her career has been dedicated to holistic medicine since before its official start. Dr. Erika graduated from Oregon State University in 2010 with her veterinary degree. Shortly afterward (2 months later) she completed the final session of the Chi Institute’s mixed animal acupuncture certification course where she learned the basics of acupuncture and traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM) for cats, dogs, horses, and other animals. Afterward, she continued her training by moving to Canada to work with the founder of the first established holistic veterinary clinic in British Columbia. Dr. Marlene was one of the groups of veterinarians who were the first generation of North American veterinarians trained in acupuncture, and she passed the wisdom of her many years of TCVM experience on to Dr. Erika.

Dr. Natasha Lilly, DVM, CVA, animal diet expert and founder of the Royal Animal Health University (royalanimalhealthuniversity.com), delivers an interesting overview of pet nutrition and the importance of a well balanced diet for our furry friends. Dr. Lilly has a profound passion for animal well being and care. She attended California Polytechnic State University on the pre-veterinary track studying animal science, and completed her DVM work at UC Davis with a concentration in equine medicine. Dr. Lilly has extensive experience in equine sports medicine and animal acupuncture. Frustrated by traditional methods of treatment, Dr. Lilly sought new ways to provide care. She began working for an established acupuncturist and complementary medicine DVM in Chicago—Dr. Barbara Royal. Dr. Royal's approach to animal health combined conventional and holistic medicine practices. Holistic veterinary medicine is a branch of veterinary medicine that implements alternative medicine in the treatment of animals that strongly stresses the importance of empathy and very minimal invasiveness. Dr. Lilly worked at Central Coast Pet Hospital and Emergency, where she practiced acupuncture services. She has knowledge and training in Chinese herbal medicine through the Chi Institute. Dr. Lilly discusses their diet software for dogs and cats. Based on the groundbreaking work and diet analysis of Steve Brown, Dr. Barbara Royal and Dr. Natasha Lilly have incorporated his unique Animal Diet Formulator into their care plan. (Steve Brown is a revered nutritional researcher and formulator of the first commercially available fresh-raw pet food in the United States.) The animal diet expert talks about the kinds of foods people feed their pets, and surprisingly, home-prepared food is often the worst because it is extremely out of balance for the pet's nutritional needs. Though with recalls and commercial pet food problems, she came to the conclusion that home-prepared food could be balanced and healthy… if pet parents could learn how to balance it for maximum nutritional benefit. She discusses the importance of considering the biology and physical traits of the species in regard to their optimum nutritional intake. Dr. Lilly details how their formulator works, and how it can be set up to comply with American or European guidelines. She discusses how her team at the Royal Animal Health University works with clients to educate them on the software, so they get a comprehensive understanding of what it offers and how to utilize it. The animal care educator discusses their website and the benefits that it offers to pet owners. She talks about some of the problems with animal diets, and mistakes some pet owners make when attempting to feed their pets. She elaborates on animal diets, and how it is important to incorporate things that many of us don't eat, such as spleens, livers, kidneys, etc., because our pets are biologically designed to eat whole animals. And animals enjoy this type of organ meat and it is natural for them. Additionally, she discusses how smell is a factor in pet food, and the ways that smell can be enhanced to entice your pet to eat their food. She talks about the ways pet owners can add butter, or lightly sear the food, to enhance the meal and get pets excited to eat. Dr. Lilly discusses weight issues with pets and the importance of getting weight under control to avoid heath issues. Additionally she discusses some of the absolutely unacceptable foods for dogs and cats; she stresses that pets should never be fed chocolate, onions, or grapes. When formulating fresh foods, Dr. Lilly states that carbohydrates can be lowered, which makes a big difference in pet diets. She also states that all carbs are not created equal, and some sources for carbs are far better than others. Dr. Lilly describes their upcoming commercial software that provides a wide variety (over 1500 ingredients) for commercial companies who want to utilize the formulation software when preparing pet food brands for market. She discusses individual recipes as well, and consulting services for pet owners whose pets have specific conditions. Dr. Lilly is passionate about pet health and the Royal Animal Health University is steadfastly dedicated to a holistic, common sense approach to contemporary animal care.
