The Tijuana Cartel, also known as the Arellano Félix Organization, was one of Mexico's most notorious drug trafficking organizations. Founded in the late 1980s by the Arellano Félix brothers, the cartel quickly rose to power by controlling the key Tijuana-San Diego border corridor, a major drug smuggling route into the United States. The cartel was known for its extreme violence, sophisticated smuggling operations, and extensive corruption.Benjamin Arellano Félix was the strategic leader, while his brother Ramón served as the brutal enforcer. The cartel maintained its dominance through assassinations, kidnappings, and bribery, eliminating rivals and silencing authorities. Their violent reign included the 1993 assassination of Cardinal Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo, which drew international attention.The Tijuana Cartel engaged in a bloody rivalry with the Sinaloa Cartel, led by Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, leading to a violent turf war that claimed thousands of lives. The cartel's power began to decline in the early 2000s following the death of Ramón and the arrest of Benjamin, leading to internal struggles and fragmentation.By the late 2000s, the Tijuana Cartel had splintered into smaller factions, with some aligning with rival cartels to survive. In this episode of Cities After…, Prof. Robles-Durán interviews Teddy Cruz and Fonna Forman about their work with public institutions and community partners on both sides of the US/Mexico border, in San Diego and Tijuana. Tijuana, as Cruz reminds us, has always been a geography of conflict and of crisis. Cruz and Forman's work is deliberately situated at the intersection of formal, often exclusionary, American institutions and grassroots community organizing. By building coalitions, the interplay between various groups—researchers/political scientists and migrants/community organizers becomes more collaborative and less top-down. Their goal for creating community stations is to build public space that is “not about beautification, but public space that is deliberately injected with co-curatorial programming in perpetuity.” In this conversation, Cruz, Forman, and Robles-Durán discuss changes in border politics since Trump, asylum policies and climate change, working with formal institutions and creating “cultural coyote” organizations, the challenges they face while working at the local level, and more. About our guests: Teddy Cruz (MDes Harvard University) is a Professor of Public Culture and Urbanization in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of California, San Diego. He is known internationally for his urban research of the Tijuana/San Diego border, advancing border neighborhoods as sites of cultural production from which to rethink urban policy, affordable housing, and public space.  Fonna Forman (PhD University of Chicago) is a Professor of Political Theory at the University of California, San Diego and Founding Director of the UCSD Center on Global Justice. Her work focuses on climate justice, borders and migration, and participatory urbanization. She serves as Co-Chair of the University of California's Global Climate Leadership Council. Together they are principals in Estudio Teddy Cruz + Fonna Forman, a research-based political and architectural practice in San Diego investigating borders, informal urbanization, climate resilience, civic infrastructure and public culture. They lead a variety of urban research agendas and civic/public interventions in the San Diego-Tijuana border region and beyond. Their work has been exhibited widely in prestigious cultural venues across the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, New York; Das Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; M+ Hong Kong, and representing the United States in the 2018 Venice Architectural Biennale. Marlene Wagman Geller always wanted to write.  Believing that success is not in succeeding but in trying, Marlene was determined to live out her dream of being a writer.   A teacher, Marlene was in Toronto, Canada, where she taught high school English and then moved to San Diego, California in 1986 to teach at a Tijuana San Diego border school which she says, “surviving that was badass enough.”  Her life changed in 2008 when she published her first book with Penguin, Once Again to Zelda: The Stories Behind Literature's Most Intriguing Dedications. Marlene took a leap of faith sending it out as everyone said her chances were few to none. However, she abided by the belief that dreams do not have to be for sleeping. It was absolutely mind-blowing how much Luis was able to "read me like a book", armed with very little knowledge besides my birth location, birth time and birth date. Obviously, I just had to get into the nitty-gritty of how Human Design principles work for today's podcast, as it has truly helped my own decision making process and communication with other humans, including my own family, quite notably. Luis started working as a lawyer at an international corporate law firm, on the Mexican side of the Tijuana-San Diego, California Border. In a eureka moment, he resigned and moved to the tropical beaches of Puerto Vallarta and Nayarit, Mexico. En este episodio, compartimos el artículo de la filósofa, poeta y activista Sayak Valencia titulado: "El transfeminismo no es un generismo". Publicada en la Revista de Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales Pléyade. Margarita Valencia Triana, conocida como Sayak Valenca, (Tijuana, 1980) es una poeta, filósofa, teórica del feminismo, ensayista mexicana y artista de performance. Desde su activismo, en el 2002 cofundó 'La línea', un grupo feminista interdisciplinario dedicado a la teoría, escritura, producción audiovisual y editorial, así como a la acción en el espacio público a partir del performance. Con esta premisa, también realiza un trabajo de análisis de lo binacional a partir de la experiencia de la frontera Tijuana-San Diego, así como la relación entre Madrid y Nueva York.​ Junto con otras activistas, impulsó el Manifiesto para la Insurrección Transfeminista, cuyo interés se centra en la lucha de "las bolleras, las putas, lxs trans, las inmigrantes, las negras, las heterodisidentes" y también para salir de los estereotipos de género.​ Valencia acuñó el término «capitalismo gore», en su libro homónimo de 2010,​ tomando como referencia el gore cinematográfico, similar a la violencia del capitalismo que se experimenta en ciudades fronterizas, la cual es parte de la reproducción del sistema capital. El texto de Valencia es un 'análisis transfeminista' a partir de sus propias experiencias en Tijuana, que para ella es el lado oscuro (Lado B) de la economía global.6 La idea principal del texto es que el capitalismo "se alimenta de sangre", su lógica es la depredación y el asesinato como formas de trabajo, particularmente en poblaciones precarizadas, las cuales a su vez son hiperconsumistas. En esta lógica, las empresas se convierten en «necroempresas», pues aunque prometen beneficios y progreso, también fomentan el surgimiento del «proletariado gore». Dra. Norma Iglesias-Prieto, académica transfronteriza, con una educación interdisciplinaria (licenciatura en antropología social, maestría en comunicaciones y doctorado en sociología). Desde el 2000 trabaja en la Universidad Estatal de San Diego. Trabajó durante más de 22 años en El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, sede Tijuana. Tiene 38 años de experiencia académica en estudios culturales en la frontera México-Estados Unidos, con énfasis en identidad, género, arte y medios de comunicación (particularmente cine). Las investigaciones más recientes de Iglesias Prieto se basan en el potencial creativo como mecanismo para resistir la opresión y expresar la dignidad humana, así como en el papel de las artes en la reconfiguración del tejido social. Desarrolló el concepto de fronteridades o borderism para comprender los diferentes significados de las experiencias y prácticas fronterizas. Es autora de cinco libros, entre ellos La flor más bella de la maquiladora (1985/1997) y Emergencias: Las artes visuales en Tijuana (2008), entre múltiples artículos para revistas académicas, y capítulos en catálogos de arte. 14 artículos en revistas académicas, 25 capítulos en libros arbitrados, 10 capítulos en catálogos de arte, y 25 artículos en revistas culturales. Sus publicaciones están en inglés, español, francés, alemán e italiano. En esta charla la doctora Norma Iglesias- Prieto nos compartió experiencias biográficas, sobre su infancia y su desplazamiento hacia el norte, su interés por los estudios de género, el cine, las artes y sus múltiples destrezas creativas. Hello listeners, this week we have a conversation with Laura Rivas.Who would’ve thought a 1980 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am Bandit would be the reason why Laura's family lives in the U.S. today. Her father came to pick up the Firebird and decided to stay in the land of the free, followed shortly by her mom, her sister, and her a year after. Their first year in America was in her uncle’s living room in the city of Compton. Laura remembers looking out the second-floor living room window on Christmas day and seeing a drunk Santa Claus shooting his gun in the air shouting a cheerful “Merry Christmas Motherf*ckers.” They settled down in the backhouse of Mexican Santeria worshippers for the next fourteen years. On her tenth birthday, Laura's mother bought her a Sony Mini DVD camcorder to capture the two scarlet macaws, five Chihuahuas, four chickens, and a cat that roamed freely in their front yard. FANDANGO AT THE WALL follows Arturo O’Farrill, maestro Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra founder, and Kabir Sehgal, bestselling author and music producer, as they prepare to record a live album at the U.S.-Mexico border wall. Their project is inspired by the annual music festival called Fandango Fronterizo, which unites people in son jarocho's song and dance on both sides of the Tijuana-San Diego border. Before recording, Fandango Fronterizo organizer, Jorge Francisco Castillo, takes O’Farrill and Sehgal on an inspiring journey of Veracruz, Mexico, where son jarocho, the 300-hundred-year-old folk music called combining indigenous, Spanish, and African traditions originated. As they travel to the remotest regions of the Veracruz coast, they meet legendary son jarocho musicians and artisans and recruit them for the upcoming festival. Their travels culminate at the annual border celebration, promoting peace, and celebrating unity. From executive producers, Quincy Jones, Andrew Young, Carlos Santana, producers Kabir Sehgal and Doug Davis, and director Varda Bar-Kar, the film introduces the beautiful music of the region through intimate storytelling and captivating concert footage. Check out our past episodes for more interesting stories! ** RoughTranscript ** So here I am in downtown San Diego at another restaurant talking to the hostess outside, and she told me that she lives in ... Tijuana, Mexico ... I thought it would be interesting to do a little podcast because here in San Diego we're right on the border and you're proof of that I guess? Yes sir, one of the many people that commute across two countries to go to work and live. So every day, how do you get to work? So, I leave my house at 4:40 in the morning to walk 20 minutes to a local bus station and I take the 5 AM bus that drops me off at the border at 5:30 in the morning. I do about one hour and a half wait time which it makes it about seven in the morning. Wait a minute now, they drop you off and then you have to wait an hour and a half for what? To cross the border from Mexico to United States. In the bus? No, the bus drops me off to the, umm, walking way to cross to the US. Alright, what we call La Linea, right? La linea. OK, then and from there, there's so many people it takes an hour.... an hour, an hour and a half roughly if it's during peak hours which usually are in the morning because many of us work early or have school. OK, so she's got an hour. hour and a half wait to get across the border, and then once you get across... I take the trolley, the Blue Line from the San Isidro station all the way to 12th and Imperial, which takes about 30 to 40 minutes, and then I get off. I transfer to the Green Line which takes me from 12th and Imperial to County Center and Little Italy, where I get off and I walk about five minutes to get to work. So all together the trolley time is... it depends on the day, like an hour-ish, maybe more. OK, so an hour on the trolley, an hour waiting.... (someone interrupts…) OK, well, we had a little interruption because somebody was looking for a bathroom but I think you got the idea!
