The White House is not at war with Facebook, it's at war with the coronavirus. That's the word from Press Secretary Jean Psaki during her daily news briefing. This, as her boss – President Biden – said big tech was “killing people” by not controlling people's posts on Friday. Psaki again ripped vaccine misinformation on social media and said companies like Facebook are not doing enough to combat it. Psaki argued that bad, inaccurate information about vaccines is killing people. Her comments came after President Biden walked back his criticism of Facebook during an earlierevent, acknowledging that the social media giant is not literally killing anyone. He said there are about a dozen people "out there" promoting misinformation on social media platforms. Biden added, "Anyone listening to it is getting hurt by it – it's killing people – it's bad information." See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Think Tank welcomes the return of the Think Tank “A Team,” Attorney Tom Ryan and political consultant Chuck Coughlin to discuss several of the most pressing Arizona issues. Arizona is getting $12.2 billion of America Rescue Plan Act relief. But there is a requirement that they money be used for the specified purposes, not to fund tax cuts. AG Brnovich has indicted he will sue over this provision. Will his court challenge have a chance? Proposition 208, passed by the voters last November provides additional education funding paid for by a tax on ultra-high income earners. The Voter Protection initiative, also passed by the voters, prohibits the legislature from any action whose purpose is to undermine the will of the voters. The governor and Republicans in the legislature think they can evade this provision with artful legislation. Will this survive a court challenge? The Arizona State Senate “won” the right to “audit” the Maricopa County election results. But they seem to have no idea of how to do this given that the County has already subjected the results to two independent audits. President Fann does not appear to have a face-saving way to get out of this mess. (Like the dog that finally catches that car: “What do I do NOW?) With Governor Ducey’s support, Native American gaming legislation is in the works that will augment the tribes’ gaming footprint, but also pour a small fortune into the hands of the billionaire owners of the four major league sports franchises (who also all benefitted from publicly financed stadiums). We conclude with a discussion of the demise of civility in our politics with a discussion of a couple of pertinent incidents this week in our own legislature. The Think Tank airs from 6-7pm Saturdays and Sundays from 9-10pm on KTAR 92.3 FM. After broadcast, podcasts are available at ktar.com. It is during this segment that we ask for some feedback and ideas related to inclusive community spaces for dogs and humans. Individuals in the Philly community have shared their stories about experiencing racism within the dog community, specifically at dog parks. I have received private messages myself after sharing articles and posts specific to the the Philadelphia dog world. To the protesters, the leaders, the citizens of Philadelphia and the Black Lives Matter Movement: Your voices are strong and you have tremendous support from the city. For the past 3-4 weeks Ryan and I have been taking the time to educate ourselves and listen. There is injustice that is rooted within our country and cities and across the globe. Discrimination and racism is experienced everyday. Black. Lives. Matter. And there is no place for hate. To see change we have to continue to do the work. There isn't a quick fix for the work that is being done. The battle might be uphill, but the climb is necessary and mandatory if we want to truly be the land of the free and the home of the brave. If you own a dog in the Philadelphia area, specifically the Brewerytown and Fairmount area and you feel comfortable DMing or emailing Tails and Ales, we want to hear your feedback on how the community can create this space- physical or virtual. This country as a whole needs to do better and we want to do what we can within our community without doing harm to the educators and leaders making strides toward reform and change. Author Dr. Frank Ryan has spent a lifetime researching, speaking on, and writing about virus behaviors. His book Virusphere: From Common Colds to Ebola Epidemics--Why We Need the Viruses That Plague Us was just released in paperback. In this exploratory conversation, he explains why calling viruses parasitic is too simplistic and confining, why this is so as he discusses the history of the AIDS virus evolution with humans as an example, and how different mechanics we use to survive, such as placental membranes, are virus derived. Dr. Frank Ryan is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medical Education at The University of Sheffield in the UK. He has authored numerous books, including Virusphere. The conversation begins with an explanation of the behaviors of viruses as symbionts, existing at a continuum between parasite and mutualistic symbiont. Among many other examples he presents, he discusses AIDS, one of the worse epidemic viruses in our lifetime. Yet even at the height of the epidemic, scientist didn't ask if it were a parasite or not. Rather, they asked what aspect of the virus is changing as a result of the human interaction and vice versa. What they found was a change in the patient gene antigen that had to do with the virus evolution—both virus and human genome were actually altering each other's genome; so while this may be a virus near the parasitic end of the continuum, human and virus are still changing each other—it's not just a one-sided relationship. Dr. Ryan offers other examples of the behaviors of viruses to flesh out this coevolution, from viruses and the Brazilian wood rabbit in Australia to mammal placental development. He explains how retroviruses function, replicate, and become infectious. He also explains the process of the Coronavirus, its mechanics within human cell cytoplasm and the replication process. He finishes by explaining the ubiquitous nature of the behavior of viruses having effects we may be unaware of, such as keeping the bacteria from taking over the ocean. For more, you can find his book for sale at https://www.amazon.com/Virusphere-Common-Epidemics-Why-Viruses-Plague/dp/1633886042

Andrew and Ryan discuss and brainstorm a bit about how the internship program should work. What should the positions be? What do the interns get? What will their responsibilities be? How will we get the word out? How will they apply for the job? Then they move on to more general topics about the website and the show in general. The idea that the show should have more recurring panel hosts was brought up, Andrew agrees to be one. They also started an idea bout how new content can be generated by asking people to record their own "design chats" with their phones. The next talk will be a brainstorm for new products.
