Is excellent academic leadership and management possible in the education system? Making Conversations about education Count! "We recognise all the students are different, have different backgrounds, you have different skills, abilities, different ambitions. If universities were some of the things that people accuse them of, we wouldn't give that level of choice..." Kevin Singh, Making Conversations Count - (May 2022) Psst! Low on data? Here's a lower bandwidth version for you. Who is Kevin Singh? Professor Kevin Singh is Head of the Manchester School of Architecture as well as the Director of "Space Studios" in Manchester. Kevin is also part owner of a bar and restaurant. But this entrepreneur isn't just in it for the money. As you'll hear, he has a very clear mission in mind. To leave an impact on students and buildings alike. In this episode of the "Making Conversations Count" podcast, Kevin explains to Wendy how educational frameworks are important and need to be handled correctly, and why he's not bothered about being commissioned for a big New York skyscraper!... You'll learn.... In this episode of "Making Conversations Count", in which Kevin Singh shares his thoughts on management and education in architecture, covers: Kevin's values around ‘taking responsibility' and comparison The real continuing value of education The impact architecture (and solid educational leadership) can make! Kevin's pivotal conversation A poignant moment from the episode: Wendy Harris There's an old saying, and I don't know who said it may be Jim Rohn or somebody like that that says, do what you love and you never work a day in your life, isn't it? It's that sort of concept. Kevin Singh Yeah, spot on. Yeah. Which I think goes then to that point to students trying to have your career, because you're far more likely to enjoy it. I mean, if you enjoy social housing and small domestic projects, that's not better or worse than designing big office buildings, each to their own really! Wendy Harris Doesn't that just fall into a different category of. Well, actually, you can feel a real sense of pride because of the contribution that you make. Kevin Singh Yeah. I mean, probably legacy is too strong a word, but I certainly know where I feel most reward is that sense of satisfaction when you see a student that was failing or was desperate to get a 2-1 and you help them achieve it, or they went on to get a great job. But I've got an ex student who unbelievably talented drawing, has left the profession, has now set up his own business as an artist, as an illustrator. It's really satisfying to see that he's gone on to do something that he's clearly passionate about. He works from home, he's got a young family, it's perfect for him. And it's not a failure that he didn't practise for long as an architect. He just found his calling. That's great, really. I'm still waiting for my calling to be a professional footballer, but I think it's a little bit too late for me Click here for the full transcript What IS Making Conversations Count? We talked about China's rich history, cultural identity, and international affairs, as well as China's worldview and efforts to reshape the international order, the evolution and growth of China-Israel relations (of which Carice played a key role in fostering), and how the Chinese feel about Israelis and Jews. Carice Witte is the Founder and Executive Director of SIGNAL (Sino-Israel Global Network & Academic Leadership), an Israeli policy organization that specializes on China-Israel relations.  Ms. Witte initiated Chinese-Israeli Track-II exchanges in 2011. Having led over 1,000 briefings in China and Israel, she established a semi-annual China-Israel and annual China-Israel-U.S. Track-II dialogue in 2017.  In 2011, Ms. Witte initiated the founding of Israel Studies Programs (ISPs) at universities across China, including an annual program held in Israel for Chinese faculty on teaching Israel Studies.  An expert on China and China-Israel relations, Ms. Witte is a leading contributor to defining this field of policy research in Israel. Ms. Witte has authored articles, research and policy analysis papers on Sino-Israel relations, trade policy, strategic communications, and global Jewry. Her research focuses on Israel's perspective on Xi Jinping Thought and its potential implications for the Middle East, Israel and the BRI, China in the Middle East, and China's foreign policy.  Links: SIGNAL's http://www.sino-israel.org (website) SIGNAL's https://twitter.com/sinoisrael?lang=en (Twitter) Carice's most recent article in https://www.calcalistech.com/ctech/articles/0,7340,L-3848995,00.html (Calcalist), Israel's leading source of economic news. Professor Randy Howard Katz, the Vice Chancellor for Research at UC Berkeley and the United Micro Electronics Corporation Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. He is a pioneer who helped develop many of the wireless tools and fast, reliable, computer storage, we take for granted today. Katz is well known in the computer industry for his development of RAID computer storage systems in the 1980s with Professor Emeritus David Patterson, and then graduate student Garth Gibson. Short for Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks, RAID storage today is a $25 billion per year industry sector that allows the storage of data in multiple places across an array of many small, parallel computers for quick retrieval and protection against loss or corruption of the data. He is also known as the scientist who brought the nascent internet to the White House. In the 1990s, he set up the email accounts of former President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore, and built the original whitehouse.gov site, which has been the main portal into executive brunch ever since. Katz has also helped shepherd other innovations into common usage, wireless computing, wide area wireless networks for mobile devices, cloud-based applications and cloud storage and ways of managing and protecting computer networks. He currently is involved with the RISElab – Real-time Intelligent Secure Execution — where he collaborates on projects that use machine learning to control complex infrastructures like buildings, energy, and transportation systems. He is focused on exploiting "serverless computing", a way to harness lightweight, low cost, stateless virtual machine images typically found in cloud computing environments to perform long-running data-intensive computations. He has published over 250 referee technical papers, book chapters, and books. His textbook "Contemporary Logic Design" has sold over 85,000 copies and has been used at over 200 colleges and universities. He has supervised 43 Master theses and 31 Ph.D. dissertations (including one ACM Dissertation award winner and eight women) and leads the research team of over ten graduate students, technical staff and academic visitors. His recognitions include thirteen best paper awards (including one "Test of Time" Paper Award, and one selected for a 50 year retrospective on IEEE Communications publications), three best presentation awards, the Outstanding Alumni Award of the UCB Computer Science Division, the CRA Outstanding Service Award, the Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award, the Air Force Exceptional Civilian Service Decoration, the IEEE Reynolds Johnson Information Storage Award, the ASEE Frederic E. Terman Award, and the ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award. Katz has also had a profound impact on engineering education at Berkeley, and has been recognized for his dynamic teaching and mentoring with numerous honors, including the campus's distinguished Teaching Award. He has been a frequent instructor in the freshman seminar program, teaching courses on the history of communications technologies. Katz is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has also been inducted into the Silicon Valley Engineering Hall of Fame. He was awarded the IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal in 2010. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University, and his Master and Ph.D. degrees from UC Berkeley, all in computer science. Katz lives in San Francisco with his wife, psychologist Zoi Eliou and his two rescue dogs, Benji and Lulu. He is an avid Giants fan and amateur actor and playwright, a voracious reader of fiction and history and enjoys board games. Show transcript: https://www.jeremyau.com/blog/randy-katz

Topics Discussed in this Episode: Imposter syndrome is real and it's important to celebrate your successes. Only 5% of all college presidents are women of color. "Mesearch" is a strategic way to undertake research while looking towards long-term goals like joining higher education leadership. ACE is the foregoing professional association for higher education leaders in the United States. We need to have a conversation about public trust and higher education. What trust looks like in higher education varies based on race, socio-economic status, first generation college student status, and the intersections of these and other margins. Student loan debt impacts people of color differently than white students. Student loan debt impacts Black women significantly more than any other racial or gender group. We need to refine what the margins look like in higher education and the language we used. "Minority students" are not "minority students" -- they are part of historically minoritized groups. The American Dream does not look the same for all people and varies depending on race, class, gender, sexuality, and other margins within higher education, as well as the places where people's identities overlap. Student loan debt elimination is a critical conversation. Trust looks different for every single group. The public needs to articulate what they want from higher education. Higher education institutions need to examine whether they can meet the public's needs and what their goals are in meeting those needs. Intentional self-care is critical because racial battle fatigue is real. Systems of oppression weren't created overnight and won't be dismantled overnight, but we can recognize where our calling is to fight oppression.Resources Discussed in this Episode:Johns Hopkins University PressAmerican Council on EducationHoward University"Voices from the Field: Women of Color Presidents in Higher Education"ACE Women's NetworkSenator Elizabeth WarrenRace and Ethnicity in Higher Education (REHE)Moving the Needle: Advancing Women in Higher Education LeadershipTom Hockaday, University Technology Transfer: What Is It and How to Do It Music Credits: “Come Right Here” by Tendinite, licensed under a Creative Commons 4.0 CC-BY-NC-ND license.
