History:The Billboard Top Ten Songs chart for 1995 contains the following names: Coolio, TLC, Seal, Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, Madonna, and a man named Montell Jordan. This Is How We Do It was a breakout new jack-swing song that topped the Hot 100 for seven weeks and R&B charts for eight. Jordan, tall and handsome with a silky-smooth voice, established himself as a powerful presence in music, brimming with talent, savvy, and charm. Over his nearly twenty-year career in music, Jordan has released seven studio albums, and fourteen singles, and is a Grammy-nominated artist, selling more than 10 million records worldwide. Origins:From South Central Los Angeles to Pepperdine University in Malibu, Montell was on course to attend law school when a professor said one of his biggest regrets was missing the chance to pursue music. In a flash, Montell recognized that if he was ever going to take a shot at music, he needed to do it then. He put together a demo, which eventually landed in the hands of Def Jam Records and Russell Simmons. This Is How We Do It took off, and his first of many number-one singles was born. Following years of awards, achievements, and accolades that never seemed to satisfy, Montell learned that without music, he's a husband, a dad, and a friend. He stepped away from the music business for many years in search of significance over success. “I had to learn who Montell was outside of music to determine that I make music and music doesn't make me.” In that time away, Montell was able to reevaluate his priorities and ultimately find his passion. This was found as he connected with his childhood faith. Ministry:Montell began to realize the difference between gifting and calling. He was gifted with music, but he was called to minister. Speaking, teaching, mentoring, counseling, and writing are some of the many ways Jordan is fulfilling his purpose in ministry today. Jordan now does music again as he has determined both what he is gifted to do and what he is purposed to do and allowed those worlds to meet. Montell served more than 14,000 people from 140 nations around the world each weekend for the last decade as an executive pastor of music, marriage, and men's ministry at Victory World Church in Norcross, GA. He continues to redefine sound through Victory, an ideal place that builds families transforms communities, reconciles cultures, and impacts nations. In his musical past, Montell had already shown an ability to stretch boundaries of genre and style and uses this same ability to influence, impact, and inspire today. Jordan's musical achievements are still recognized worldwide, and he and his wife of 20+ years, Kristin Jordan released a marriage book in October 2017 titled, “Marriage Masterpeace Inc! Making Your Marriage A Masterpeace.” Jordan released his autobiography, “Becoming Unfamous” during the summer of 2016. Montell brings the word of God and personal experience from the music business to provide a practical and applicable understanding of music and worship to light. He still tours on occasion to bring the love of Christ outside the four walls of the church to concert venues all over the world. Montell and Kristin is now a marriage missionary and has founded Marriage Masterpeace Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that seeks to help marriages all around the world by helping men and women reconcile with God and then to each other in efforts to eradicate divorce by taking the option off the table. Music:Montell Jordan's latest single, “When I'm Around You” feat. Grammy award-winning rap artist Lecrae is his first R&B song in nearly ten years! The new song is available NOW on all digital platforms and is currently charting on Urban AC radio! The single is modern R&B with a soulful relevancy easily identifiable as classic Montell Jordan. This new song and album are created to be the soundtrack for married couples (and those who desire to be married) by assisting them in keeping passion alive in their re...

Drawing comparisons to some of music's greatest singer, songwriter, producers like Babyface, Michael Jackson and El Debarge, Devon Howard has constructed a style and feel very reminiscent of his childhood inspirations yet uniquely all his own. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Devon's greatest influence was his father, Melvin Leonard Brown, who was a songwriter for a few local groups of his era including The Bleu Lights, who enjoyed a hit release written by Brown. After graduating from The Baltimore School for the Arts, Devon joined the group Me 2 U who scored a record deal with RCA Records allowing him to write two songs on the album. The self-titled debut album contained production from Vincent Herbert (Lady Gaga, Tamar Braxton) and Ron Fair (Christina Aguilera, Keyshia Cole). The project released two singles ‘Want U Back' and ‘All Night' both charting on the R&B Billboard charts respectively. After Me 2 U disbanded, Howard and two other members of the group formed Diverisiti, signing to Global/EMI Records. This venture gave Devon the opportunity to write and produce twelve songs on the CD. The group toured the United States promoting their music and eventually went on to do solo projects. In 2005, Howard signed with an indie label in Europe and released his first solo project entitled ‘Urban Eclecticism.' The success of that project lead to a record deal in Japan and garnered more fanfare abroad for Devon. In 2007, the release of Howard's hit single ‘Other Side of the Bed' through Global Entertainment marked his first release in the United States. The video for the single was directed by Chris Robinson (Beyonce', Usher, Bruno Mars) and played on video outlets worldwide, including VH1 Soul and BET. Global released a second single ‘Yesterday' in 2008, a duet with Baltimore's own Paula Campbell which fared well at Urban AC radio. In the subsequent years, Devon performed around the country opening for major and independent artists, including Joe, Mario, KeKe Wyatt and Dionne Warwick. Taking time to produce projects and delve into other facets of the entertainment industry, Howard has created a suite of songs that feels reminiscent of old school classic love songs yet still retaining relevance in today's market. The album entitled ‘Return To Love' and its 'singles ‘Back To Paradise' and ‘Could This Be Love' have already gained attention across the globe and is set to make its debut in the United States at Urban AC radio. Return To Love is currently available on most digital outlets. Devon is not just the nice guy with the smooth sexy voice, he is the winner of the Heineken/ASCAP Initiative for Songwriting. Amidst his hectic schedule he also finds time to give back. He's been an advocate for foster kids and homeless teens in his hometown Baltimore the past fifteen years. Devon also put together a compilation CD of local Artists where 100% of the proceeds went to supporting a day shelter for homeless youth and young adults. Devon Howard has also performed at countless charitable events and have donated to various organizations including The Red Cross and America's Harvest. His latest single "Forever and Always reached #8 on the Indie Soul chart in the UK and is doing just as well here in the US. The multi-talented Demetria McKinney from FREEFORM much anticipated new series, “MOTHERLAND: Fort Salem,” who plays ‘Anacostia' – an articulate, tough and smart sergeant, whose sole focus is keeping the young recruits alive through their basic training. The show is set to debut in March 18th, 2020. Set in an alternate America where witches ended their persecution 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the U.S. government to fight for their country, Motherland: Fort Salem follow these young women from basic training in combat magic into early deployment. In this world, the traditional roles of gender and power are flipped, with the more dominant women on the front lines fighting looming terrorist threats that are familiar to our world — but with supernatural tactics and weapons. The series not only stars Demetria, but talents like, Taylor Hickson, Ashley Nicole, Amalia Holm and many others. Demetria, a triple threat in the truest sense of the term, a vocal powerhouse, an award-winning actress, a skillful songwriter and a trend setter. Demetria has played many diverse roles on both the big and small screen. She is showing us why she is making her mark on your TV screens, in movie theaters and on stage. She is also concurrently recurring on BounceTV's, “Saints & Sinners” and “A House Divided” for UMC. You may also recognize McKinney from her role as ‘Janine Payne' on the hit TBS sitcom “Tyler Perry's House of Payne”, which produced over 250 episodes and received five NAACP Image Awards for Best Sitcom. The show now airs in syndication on BET Networks. From Albuquerque, New Mexico to a Military family, Demetria has lived all over the world and was given a drive that resembled that of her parents growing up. Her work ethic, way of life and how she sees life is that of her relationships with her family. Finding an interest in theater since she was little, Demetria decided to go to Okaloosa Walton Community College to study theater, where she took part in different theatrical plays outside and inside the college circuit. However, she didn't finish her degree because other opportunities came calling her name, one being Mr. Tyler Perry. Mr. Perry discovered her in a play that was touring called, “The Woman I am Today,” which she will say “kick started” her career. McKinney also worked with Tyler on his stage play, “Meet the Browns” and went on to star in several of his other plays including “What's Done in The Dark”, “Why Did I Get Married?” and “Madea's Family Christmas”. Her additional stage work includes leading roles in the plays “The Mountaintop”, “Church Girl”, the musical “I Dream” (in which she portrayed Mrs. Coretta Scott King) and “Dreamgirls”, where she performed alongside the legendary Jennifer Holliday. Demetria always makes time for her first love: music. In October 2017, she released her debut album Officially Yours, featuring the single Easy which was a top 5 hit on the Billboard and Urban AC radio charts. Demetria has opened on tour for R&B mainstays including Tyrese, BBD, Tank, and Fantasia. She received a 2017 NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding New Artist. For Fun, Demetria loves spending time with her son, taking in a good movie, traveling and even painting art. She is very passionate about cancer research, due to her father, a cancer survivor. On top of that, she spends time in the women empowerment space, especially with young African American Women of Our Communities, which plays a big role in her life, sexual abuse, homelessness and Earth Awareness. The R&B general found new life on his last album “Savage” when he dropped his single “When We”. The success of the record was a shocker to a lot of people because “When We” not only dominated Urban AC, the song also crossed over to Urban radio and found some success there. This was considered a huge accomplishment to many in the industry because Urban radio is typically for younger artists, not one who has been releasing music since 2001. Tank is back with his new album “Elevation” and YouKnowIGotSoul had a chance to talk to him about the project, his collaboration with JoJo and his thoughts on R&B fans who want the “old Tank” back. The songs we've heard so far as very trap influenced, so we talk about whether we'll ever see real R&B Tank again. For this week's hall of fame discussion, we nominate Jill Scott and 112. Both have very strong credentials, but will they get into the hall of fame?

We take turns talking about some of the classic R&B albums from the 90's and 2000's such as Jon B's “Cool Relax”, Amerie's “All I Have” and Keith Sweat's “Keith Sweat”. We also share memories from the album including our favorite songs and even some personal stories such as Kyle's transition from mainstream to Urban AC music. For this week's hall of fame discussion, we discuss Johnny Gill's long career from his days in New Edition to his solo projects and also his LSG albums. We also discuss the ups and downs of Robin Thicke and debate whether “Blurred Lin
0:25: Musiq Soulchild announces double album "Feel the Real" 7:32: Looking over the Urban AC charts 13:14: Thoughts on Tone Stith's new project "Can We Talk" 20:56: R. Kelly incident and whether it affects his legacy 30:20: Usher's downward spiral continues 37:30: R&B Hall Of Fame nominations: Donell Jones and R. Kelly You know we had to come back with another podcast after the drama that came with this R&B this week. We start off the podcast talking about Musiq Soulchild's upcoming double album "Feel the Real". This is the follow up album to "Life On Earth" which only came out a year ago. We talk about our expectations for the album and if it's too soon to be putting out another album. We also talk about how it's weird that this era for Musiq has been rather quiet as his singles aren't really taking off. Afterwards we talk about some singles that are blowing up on Urban AC including Tamar Braxton's "My Man", Charlie Wilson's "Good Time" and Khalid's "Location". We also talk about Tone Stith's new album "Can We Talk". Tone is a new artist and he has us excited with this youthful R&B/Pop sound. And of course, we had to talk about the incidents that happened to R&B legends R. Kelly and Usher this week. Although the incidents are different, we discuss whether they're both damaging to their respective careers. It's quite an interesting debate that we have and essentially it's up to everyone to decide whether they can separate the person from the music. For our hall of fame this time around, we try to induct Donell Jones and R. Kelly.

With No Edd around, Kyle and Tom respond to some of the YouTube comments that we've all been receiving about the state of R&B. We start off the episode talking about Bryson Tiller's album as we're told he is the savior of R&B. We talk about the 90's samples on his new album as well as his impact on the genre with his trap soul movement. Afterwards we talk about new releases from Mali Music, Jazmine Sullivan and Ameriie who made her return to R&B last week with her new song "REDRUM". Afterwards we talk about the trap soul genre and try to figure out who belongs in that demographic or if it's only for a certain age bracket. We skip the hall of fame this week because Edd isn't here, but we do revisit Ginuwine's nomination as there are more points that point towards him being a good candidate for it. We also discuss the future of artists such as Chris Brown and Trey Songz who will be transitioning into that Urban AC market in the next 10 years. We also play the "what if" game by looking into the careers of Usher and Justin Timberlake and giving out different scenarios that could have potentially changed the landscape of everything. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Acclaimed R&B Star Leela James. his spring, R&B/Soul singer-songwriter Leela James will be headlining a nationwide 25-city tour, with special guest Daley. James will be supporting the release of her hotly-anticipated album, Did It For Love (March 31, 2017/BMG). In creating her sixth studio album, Leela James drew upon a variety of inspirations ranging from her two beautiful children to the death of a close friend. The album showcases her trademark blend of powerful vocal range and sultry soul that fans have long been drawn to; as it stands, her current single Don't Want You Back is already top 5 on the Urban AC radio charts and has been streamed in over 60 countries via Spotify. For James, dedicating her energy entirely to writing and recording Did It For Love left her aching to get back on the road. “I am so excited to be going back on tour. There's nothing like interacting with people and seeing how the crowd reacts to new music. This album has been a wonderful experience, just an incredible project to work on. I feel so positive and I want to try to bring that onstage, and to everyone I meet.”

The group announced that they'll be hitting the road this summer for their "I Love The 90s Tour" and this all happened shortly after we commented on how the group hasn't toured in forever. We talk about the impact of these nostalgia tours and if they're dangerous for an artist. We also talk about some new R&B albums that are due out later this year including Trey Songz, Kevin Ross and Patti LaBelle. We discuss different marketing ideas that Patti can incorporate into her new album such as her Patti pies. We talk about the state of Trey Songz's career and where he fits in today's R&B world with the addition of all the trap music that's going on. Kyle gives a quick review on Kevin Ross' debut album and calls out every other R&B media outlet for not covering him even though "Long Song Away" is one of the top songs on the Urban AC chats right now. Afterwards we debate a topic that's been talked about for over 20 years now and that's of course the 112 vs Jagged Edge vs Dru Hill vs Next battle. We take turns ranking into group's discography to see where their music lands on our lists. We each have different opinions on their projects but we can all conclude that every group had some real classics. We then talk about Gina Thompson and try to figure out what she's up to these days. We finish the podcast by talking about french fries and try to figure out which fast food chain has the best ones. Somehow McDonalds is not number one but you'll have to listen to see who ends up winning.

We start off the podcast talking about the new Mariah Carey single “I Don't” which samples Donell Jones' classic song “Where I Wanna Be”. Afterwards we talk about artists such as Mariah Carey, Usher (“No Limit”) and Mary J. Blige (“Thick Of It”) who have attempted to adapt to the music today. The purpose is to cater to the younger generation, so we discuss whether it's necessary for legends to even do that. Speaking of adapting to the music industry, we talk about the key differences between a trend in music versus the genre evolving. We view New Jack Swing as a trend (a very good one) based on its short longevity. We also dissect Timbaland's contributions in R&B to see if his sound would be considered a trend or not. Lastly we talk about the inclusion of Hip Hop into R&B and how that has affected the genre as evidenced by the influx of trap music on the radio right now. We also discuss some new music that has come out from the likes of Bell Biv Devoe (“Three Stripes” album), Musiq Soulchild(“Simple Things”) and Omarion. We also talk about an album that we are looking forward to this year which is Kevin Ross' debut “The Awakening”. The project is set to come out on Motown Records in March.
From barefoot dreadlocked troubadour to suave standard-bearer for contemporary R&B. Eric Benét may have changed his look, but one thing has remained consistent: his dedication to crafting authentic music that engages the soul. “I’m not chasing any current whatevers,” says Benét, a four-time Grammy Award nominee. “It’s about music that gives me goose bumps and touches my soul. That’s always been a good barometer for me.” Case in point: the singer-songwriter’s latest top 5 Urban AC single, “Sunshine.” The pure soul/R&B track provides the perfect backdrop for Benét’s heartfelt reflections on a relationship that has lost its spark. The hit has since sparked a remix version featuring Tamia—the singer’s memorable duet partner on his career breakthrough hit, 1999’s “Spend My Life with You.” “‘Spend’ is almost like the national anthem vocally,” notes Benét. “You’ve got to have so much in your arsenal to successfully sing it. Not many singers can do that. But Tamia is all that and more. So it was such a joy to reunite with her on the ‘Sunshine’ remix.”Both tracks are featured on Benét’s eighth studio album. The self-titled, 13-song project, available Oct. 7 from Jordan House/Primary Wave Music, once again showcases the depth of the singer-songwriter’s musical scope. “Sometimes it’s almost like artists pick a color and stay with that for most of an album,” says Benét. “I don’t like to do one-note albums.”
YouKnowIGotSoul is finally back with a brand new podcast. We used some cool technology this time around, but it came with some minor technical difficulties (which will be fixed in future episodes!!) In the future, you will have the opportunity to not only see the YouKnowIGotSoul team on camera, but you'll also have the chance to participate live on our podcast. More details on that to follow in the future but in the meantime... In this episode of the podcast, we talk about some of the latest releases in R&B including Tweet's new album "Charlene". The album is actually the first official release from Tweet since her "It's Me Again" which came out in 2005. "Charlene" is led by the single "Magic". We also talk about Mya's new album "Smoove Jones" which quietly came out last week. Mya hasn't put out an official album in a minute, but she's back with a new project that she funded by herself. We also talk about Brian McKnight's new album "Better" and look at his current status in the industry today compared to someone like Joe who came out around the same time as him. The Urban AC charts is also discussed on this podcast. We make some points about the unusual appearances on the charts including artists like Adele, The Weeknd and Drake. Lastly we talk about some of the best songs to listen to when someone has broken up with you in a relationship. Edd believes Keith Sweat is the way to go, Tom believes it's all about Mobb Deep and Kyle is rolling with Mariah Carey.

Before her untimely death at the age of 54 on the day after Christmas 2010, Teena Marie, known as “Lady Tee,” the Ivory Queen of Soul, wrote, produced, arranged and sang on 13 albums that have sold 2.5 million copies in the soundscan era. Starting with her 1979, Rick James-produced debut, Wild and Peaceful, Teena Marie’s many soul and R&B hits include “Square Biz,” “Behind the Groove,” “I Need Your Lovin’,” “Fire and Desire,” “Lovergirl” and “Ooo La La La,” a song famously sampled by the Fugees. Teena Marie was working on her 14th and latest album for Universal Music Enterprises, Beautiful, at the time of her passing, the follow-up to 2009’s Congo Square, which peaked at #4 on the R&B chart and went to #20 on the album chart, producing the Top 12 Urban AC hit, “Can’t Last A Day.” Recorded at her Pasadena home studio and finished except for final mixes, Beautiful was seen through to its conclusion by Teena’s 20-year-old daughter, Alia Rose, who sings with her Mom on two tracks, a cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “Give Me Your Love” and “Rare Breed,” which she co-wrote (Alia co-wrote two more songs on the album, “Sweet Tooth” and the title song). The first single, “Luv Letter,” which has just gone to radio, is just that, an homage to Tee’s Motown roots, with nods to Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours,” and a dedication to Alia’s father, who just happened to be a postman, like in the Marvelettes’ song of the same name. The album comes out Jan. 15, 2013.
Loretta McNary Live is a premier blog talk radio show created for an empowered, active, and diverse TV, radio, social media and online listening audience. LML uses a progressive live call in format to target an ever expanding market of online listeners wanting an impressive menu of meaningful, insightful, and authentic conversations in choosing their media, and entertainment indulgences. Our guest today is the phenomenal Soul singer/songwriter Angie Stone. Angie released Rich Girl (SRR Records) on September 25th, her new album featuring the hit single “Do What U Gotta Do” which is already at #17 on the Urban AC charts and rising. Rich Girl is a triumphant return to what Stone does best, writing deeply soulful and intimate songs then delivering them with a voice so powerful and pure that Ebony likens it to both “soul on the outside like a spiritual armor that protects or a warm embrace that invites.” “I wrote this album from a real place,” says Stone. “It’s not about money, it’s about being rich in everything you do, in your spirit, your purpose and your giving to others. And because I was able to really write for, and in, my own voice this time, I could really sing these new songs with authenticity, something I haven’t been able to do in a long time.” Both her fans and the media celebrated Stone’s revelation, driving the single, “Do What U Gotta Do,” to become a bonafide summer hit on Urban AC stations and a favorite on national radio programs The Michael Baisden Show and the Tom Joyner Morning Show. The accompanying video is in rotation at both VH1 Soul and Centric.
