New Federal ADA Regulation Deadlines Are Approaching – Is Your Institution Ready? Colleges and universities must now meet stricter ADA compliance requirements for websites and digital content or risk legal consequences, fines,  and loss of federal funding. With the Department of Justice's latest update to Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), institutions must ensure all web content, mobile apps, and digital resources meet WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards. For many schools, the deadline is approaching fast. In this episode of Changing Higher Ed®, host Dr. Drumm McNaughton has a conversation with Eugene Woo, CEO and founder of Venngage, to discuss what these new ADA regulations mean for higher education institutions and what they must do to comply. Understanding the New ADA Requirements for Higher Ed The Department of Justice's update to Title II clarifies long-standing accessibility expectations, removing ambiguity about digital compliance. Now, all institutions receiving federal funds—including financial aid, research grants, or disaster relief—must ensure their online content adheres to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1. AA The key changes include: Explicit standards for websites and mobile apps – Digital accessibility is no longer optional. Clearer rules on compliance deadlines – Larger institutions (50,000+ students) must comply by April 2026, while smaller institutions have until April 2027. Greater enforcement risks – ADA lawsuits have historically driven accessibility improvements, and these new regulations are meant to make institutions proactive rather than reactive. Woo explains that many universities operate hundreds, if not thousands, of websites across different departments and programs, making compliance a daunting task. Why ADA Compliance Matters for Colleges and Universities Accessibility Isn't Just a Legal Obligation—It's a Universal Design Best Practice Woo highlights that designing for accessibility benefits everyone, not just individuals with disabilities. Features like captions for videos were initially created for the hearing impaired but are now widely used by all viewers. The Biggest Accessibility Challenges for Higher Ed Websites According to WebAIM's annual survey of the top one million websites, these are the most common accessibility issues: Missing alt text for images – Over 50% of homepage images lack descriptions, making content inaccessible to screen readers. Poor form accessibility – Online forms frequently lack proper labels, creating barriers for those using assistive technology. Non-descriptive links and buttons – Generic link text (e.g., “Click here”) makes navigation difficult for screen reader users. Inaccessible PDFs – Many course materials, syllabi, and administrative documents are in PDF format but lack proper tagging and readability. Color contrast issues – Up to 20% of men have some form of color blindness, yet many websites fail to meet the contrast requirements. 3. What Institutions Should Prioritize First Given the scale of most universities' digital footprints, Woo recommends: Conducting an ADA compliance audit to identify accessibility gaps. Prioritizing high-traffic pages and critical student services for remediation. Implementing universal design principles in new content to prevent future accessibility issues. How Universities Can Ensure ADA Compliance Designating Leadership Responsibility Presidents and institutional leaders must appoint a compliance officer or team responsible for ensuring accessibility across all digital platforms. Without clear ownership, accessibility efforts can fall through the cracks. Leverage AI and Automated Accessibility Tools for ADA Compliance Woo notes that institutions can use AI-powered tools to scan websites for accessibility violations and assist in remediation. Some platforms can even auto-correct PDFs and web pages to bring them closer to WCAG 2.1 standards. Budgeting for Digital Accessibility Compliance Compliance isn't just a policy issue—it requires financial investment. Schools must allocate resources for accessibility audits, technology upgrades, and training to ensure long-term compliance. Chris and Lucas share some of the biggest lessons they've made from nearly catastrophic events. They've both messed up big time, so listen closely, and avoid costly mistakes. Make sure you're subscribed, because Chris will be bringing you big lessons each week from other entrepreneurs. Lucas is going to be talking to vendors and tech partners in the ecommerce ecosystem to keep your store fine tuned and winning. Chris Meade woke up to a big box retailer definitely know of discounting Crossnet 50% at the end of season. Which is totally reasonable. What hurt was when 35 new sellers were competing with us on Amazon for the buy box. We had no choice but to buy them all back. Lesson learned - always negotiate buy backs with your retail buyers. The second lesson he share is the first time Greg and I ordered a container. Nobody told us you had to have protective packaging. Turns out weeks at sea isn't the greatest thing for your product's packaging. When we got our shipment, everything was damaged and destroyed. We had no choice but to pay retail for new boxes and stickers and redo everything ourselves. Lesson learned - Use one company that can get the products across borders and to your doorstep. After the big retail summer season, comes our BFCM season, which is great for us when we make sales directly through the website. Especially when we've already collected the POs from all the retailers. What isn't so great, is when our Black Friday deals over discounted what the retailers were able to do. Buying ads to send traffic to retailers isn't fun. It's low ROI, but it's a great way to build rapport and relationships with buyers. You can also create your own hashtags that incorporate your business name or most popular product, along with locational tags that will help you reach a local audience. #3: Blog Regularly Blogging for business is hardly a groundbreaking marketing strategy, but it's one that you can do for free. Blog posts can be short or long and if they're relevant to your business, they're a great way to attract new people to your website. The key is to choose blog topics that are highly useful to the people you want to attract. For example, you can do a series of blog posts answering common questions about your product or service. Add some relevant images and tags and you'll be sure to attract some traffic – without spending money. #4: Cross-Post Everything A lot of small businesses making the mistake of creating content for one outlet and not reusing it. That's not ideal because it limits your scope and means you need to spend more time and money creating content. Instead, come up with a cross-posting strategy that makes sense. For example, you might: Share blog posts on Facebook with an image that contains a pull quote from the blog Share visual content from Pinterest on Instagram Put pull quotes on images and share to Twitter with a shortened URL Create a Pinterest board with your most liked images from Instagram There are dozens of ways to repurpose your social media content and share it elsewhere. The most important thing to remember is to keep the platform where you're posting in mind. You won't need hashtags on Facebook, but you will on Twitter and Instagram. #5: Create Free Graphics You've probably noticed that infographics and other graphic images are popular on social media. While you could hire a designer to create images for you, there are also plenty of tools you can use to create them for free. However, only 63% of companies have a dedicated content strategy. You can see the issue at hand. Content marketing is a must and yet doing it improperly – without a clear focus and strategy – can be a huge waste of time and money. With that in mind, here are 8 content marketing types to help you build your strategy and grow your business. #1: Blog Posts Blog posts are hardly revolutionary in the world of content marketing, yet a lot of local businesses still aren't blogging regularly. Those who do reap rewards: Companies that blog get 97% more links to their websites than companies that don't Companies with blogs have a 434% higher chance of receiving a high Google rank compared to companies without blogs 10% of blog posts are compounding, which means that they attract more organic traffic over time For the best results, keep your blog posts tightly focused. That is exactly what Eugene Woo, co-founder of Venngage, did. “I had like a taste of failure, but I still went ahead anyway and did it again,” Woo says. After his first startup went under, Woo found himself back in the corporate world feeling like a failure. One of the main ones was I started a company with people I didn’t know very well.” Within a few months, founders started leaving the company, with one even refusing to turn up to an interview with Y Combinator and leaving shortly after. Stung by failure again, Woo didn't know what to do and ended up selling his company. Despite it all, he knew he had a good idea on his hands.
