Death of the Pastor's Wife is the case Netflix just put back in front of millions, and Jack takes you straight into the words at the centre of it. Mica Miller was found dead in April 2024, just days after she filed for divorce from her husband, Pastor JP Miller. You'll hear how JP described Mica, how he described their marriage, and how he described the night she died, including his own line, "I got a call late last night." Jack pulls that language apart piece by piece and shows you exactly what it holds.JP Miller has pleaded not guilty to federal cyberstalking and false statement charges and has not been charged over Mica's death. This video is Jack's analytical read of his public statements, not a verdict on the case.Want more from Never A Truer Word? Alexa Burger is producer of Netflix's three-part documentary series Death of the Pastor's Wife. The series tells the story of Mica Miller, a 30-year-old pastor's wife from South Carolina whose April 2024 death was ruled a suicide. Mica grew up deeply rooted in her faith and met John-Paul “JP” Miller, a pastor sixteen years her senior, when she was 13. Years later, the two married, and Mica became a prominent presence in his church. As their marriage deteriorated, allegations of abuse, coercive control, surveillance, and harassment emerged, and Mica began speaking publicly about abusive relationships. Two days after serving JP with divorce papers, she was found dead in a North Carolina state park. Featuring never-before-seen footage and firsthand accounts from Mica's family and friends, Death of the Pastor's Wife examines her life, marriage, final months, and the troubling questions that emerged after her death. In 1999, a handful of people gathered at a dusty Namibian airfield to meet two men flying weight-shift microlights around the world. One of them was Mike Blyth. Watching from the crowd was a boy who had never left the country, whose family couldn't afford much flying, and who had no real concept of where these men had come from — only that whatever they were doing, he wanted to do it too.Twenty-five years later, JP Schulze has flown around the world himself, built the first Sling High Wing off the line — designed by the same Mike Blyth — and become one of the most distinctive filmmakers in aviation. This one took a while to make happen. We finally met at Oshkosh this year, and JP is candid about being a naturally shy person who ended up with a career in front of a camera. He grew up in Namibia with no art classes and no creative outlets, thinking in German and Afrikaans, teaching himself English from the Discovery Channel at eight years old. He was taking the controls of his dad's microlight at ten. He funded his first licence by free-diving for crayfish, selling snake venom, and restringing tennis rackets. The around-the-world trip nearly didn't happen twice. Sponsors walked after a Cirrus ditched near Hawaii and the CAPS pull ran on every news channel — nobody wanted their logo on a small plane over an ocean. So JP and Louis Cole self-funded it, and JP is honest about what that cost: the fourteen-hour legs, the multi-hour shouting match somewhere between Fiji and Kiribati, and the weight of being responsible for a non-pilot's life for the first time.In this episode:Meeting Mike Blyth in 1999 — and building his airplane twenty years laterGrowing up flying "sketchy" weight-shift trikes over the African bushWhy Southern Africa has a GA scene almost nobody expectsMoving to New Zealand at seventeen and rebuilding from scratch in a third languageMeeting Louis Cole on a sand dune and having his life change in a daySigning with Discovery, then watching the money disappearWhat flying around the world actually took — and why he'd do it againInsisting on being the first to build the Sling High Wing, then helping write the manualWhy he refuses to post weekly, and what that has cost himThe sunglasses he built because a $350 pair costs $10 to makeWhy print still matters, and what we both think is at stakeWe also recorded a second conversation about the around-the-world flight itself — that one is exclusive to the magazine, with the audio released free a year after publication.Happy Flying,JustinSupport JP - otavi.co best sunglasses for pilotsPilot to Pilot Magazine — Volume 003 is out now. FROM THE ARCHIVES: This week, we're revisiting one of my favorite conversations from the What If Project archives, a conversation with John Philip Newell about his beautiful book "Sacred Earth, Sacred Soul". What if the deepest truth about being human isn't that we're broken, sinful, or separated from God? What if we've simply forgotten who we are? In this conversation, JP introduces us to the wisdom of Celtic Christianity and its radically different understanding of humanity, Jesus, creation, and the sacredness of the earth. We talk about things like original sin, "soul forgetfulness," the divine presence within every human being, and what it might mean to see Jesus not as the exception to humanity, but as someone who reveals what has been there all along. We also explore JP's own journey from conservative evangelical Christianity into Celtic spirituality, why ancient Celtic teachers challenged the marriage of religion and empire, and how practices like silence, meditation, nature, and attentiveness can help us remember what our souls already know. I originally recorded this conversation a few years ago, but listening back to it, I was struck by how much of it still speaks to where I am today. So I'm pulling it from the archives and sharing it again! On this week's episode, everyone is really excited, but AI really failed us. JP had a birthday and Scotty forgot. Are electric vehicles good or bad, and is the WNBA doing a good job? Are jockstraps overrated or underrated, Is Asian food really Asian food in America, and what is something you still believed as a child that you still believe today? When are the worst times to have to seriously go poo, and should we have AI to write the show? Thank you so much and keep on laughing!
