Cities may have seemed more fragile during the global COVID-19 lockdowns but, as Greg Woolf's impressive studies of early urbanism show, cities have been re-invented many times. In today's episode, listeners hear from Greg, who is an historian and archaeologist, specializing in the late Iron Age and the Roman Empire. Greg is currently the Director of the Institute of Classical Studies and a Professor of Classics at the University of London. His research concerns the history and archaeology of the ancient world at a very large scale, and he has published on literacy, on cultural change in the provinces, on identities in the ancient world, and also on libraries and knowledge cultures. He is currently researching urban resilience, mobility, and migration in the ancient world, and his latest book, The Life and Death of Ancient Cities, was published in 2020. In this episode, Greg talks about the ancient city of Göbekli Tepe and how it has influenced the way we think about city creation. He explains the common traditions that create a city, how those essential precursors have influenced human behavior, and how language and resources have travelled across the globe since ancient times. Greg also covers the collapse of the Bronze Age, the following urbanization in the Mediterranean, and some key factors that influenced the locations of ancient cities, and he ponders on the comparative advantage that Rome had over its neighbors. Finally, Greg shares his opinions on governance and the role it plays in the evolution of cities, and he offers some core lessons from what led to a successful versus an unsuccessful ancient city. Tune in today! Key Points From This Episode: • Greg shares the premise of his latest book and explains why it's no accident we live in cities. • Why Greg chose to study classical history – a fascination with the ancient world and an interest in digging came together. • The ancient city, Göbekli Tepe, and how it influences the way we think about city creation. • There are two traditions to a city – agricultural intensification and collective activity. • The essential precursor for urbanism is agriculture – Greg explains how it impacts behavior. • How Greg believes we're getting better at discovering and understanding new sites. • As archeological technology evolves, Greg thinks there are indefinite discoveries to be made. • Thinking about the Bronze Age in a broader context, how language and resources spread. • The collapse of the Bronze Age – how long it took, and why Greg suspects it happened. • The Bronze Age collapsing versus the collapse of the Roman Empire, for example. • Preserving literacy and Roman tax systems while the churches went on undisturbed. • What happens with urbanization in the Mediterranean following the Bronze Age collapse. • Greg says key factors for the locations of ancient cities were connect-ability and fertility. • What comparative advantage did cities that asserted themselves have over their neighbors? Greg says it could be luck, location, or strategy. • How the governance of ancient Mediterranean cities played or didn't play into their evolution. • Greg asserts why he believes that governance makes no difference to the rise and fall of individual cities. • What was different about Rome that led it to the Mediterranean empire, like its geopolitics. • It's tempting to look back at history like a straight line, but it's a curve with many possibilities. • Core lessons from what led to a successful versus an unsuccessful ancient city. Netflix in the TV industry, Uber in the Taxi industry, Airbnb in the hotel industry, Tesla in the car industry, and countless others. These are just some of the incredible brands or companies that came into an industry and disrupted the norm with brilliance and innovation. The emphasis in 2020 on digital events isn’t a company or service but has disrupted the industry just the same. That’s not always a bad thing you can embrace disruption and push yourself to new heights, or you can be the person dreaming about the “good old days” or waiting for everything to be “normal again”. The choice is up to you. In today’s podcast, Blair interviews Greg Beach from Event Strategy Group. Greg has 27 years of experience in the event space. From running an exhibit house that serviced the event industry, helping companies grow through events, booking speakers, planning, coordinating, and everything in between, Greg is a true industry expert. In this conversation, you will hear Greg explain how the pandemic has pushed the industry to new levels of greatness and why he thinks this is one of the best things that could have happened. This episode will leave you inspired to reimagine the way you approach events as a speaker, entrepreneur, or meeting planner. “This is a disruption, not an interruption in the event industry” - Greg Beach Here’s what we cover: How past experience helped create an amazing virtual event Overcoming the stigma that “virtual” events are any less impactful How virtual can solve common problems in live events How engaging content is more important than ever How speakers can upgrade their digital storytelling Refining the delivery of your message Speakers being used as experiential engagement tools The importance of virtual problem solving How to pivot from a traditional keynote to the competing attention of a digital audience Taking suggestions and responding to live feedback The type of events that will return as live And much more! Last week, Rob & Greg imagined what the future of real estate might look like in the aftermath of the pandemic, pending a best-case scenario. Today, they get real about what’s ahead for the industry given the reality of our current circumstances. And they’re bringing on a number of industry stakeholders to offer their outlook as well. On this episode of Industry Relations, Rob and Greg are leading a group chat around what’s next for real estate as the Coronavirus pandemic plays out. The group offers predictions on how the MLS landscape may change, debating whether it’s the number of MLSs or the number of MLS databases that really matters and offering examples of hybrid solutions that may serve as a model for the future. Greg and Rob go on to solicit the group’s thoughts on the potential shape of the recovery curve and the possibility of a shift to a buyer’s market in 2021. Finally, they explain why an increase in property taxes is likely in the aftermath of the COVID-19 bailout and how that might impact buyer demand in the real estate market. Listen in for insight on Open House numbers in states where stay-at-home orders have been lifted and learn how those stats might be a good sign for other industries. What’s Discussed: A review of what Rob & Greg covered in their best-case discussion Greg, Clint Skutchan, & John’s predictions re: the number of MLSs by 2023 Why the consolidation of data is more important than the total number of MLSs Tim Dain’s vision of a future with ten or fewer MLS databases that talk to each other How the pandemic demonstrates the industry’s underutilization of telecommunication Why Georgia is watching the commercial market for clues re: the future of residential Georgia’s concept of a J-shaped recovery Why Joshua Lopour is predicting a buyer’s market in 2021 Why Greg expects a best-case scenario uptick in buyer demand Why property taxes are likely to increase and how that might impact buyer demand The significant uptick in Open Houses scheduled in states where stay-at-home orders have been lifted How Open House numbers may be a good sign for other industries Connect with Rob and Greg: Rob’s Website Greg’s Website Resources: MLS Grid MLS Aligned Northstar MLS CDP MetroList Great Recession + COVID-19 Bailout Comparison ShowingTime Showing Activity Statistics Our Sponsors: Cloud Agent Suite Notorious VIP

My guest today is my good friend Greg Hickman, who is the founder and CEO of System.ly. Their mission is to enable and support entrepreneurs to amplify their best so they can spend their time on the things that matter most. Why I really wanted to have Greg on the show today is because a couple months ago he posted something on his Facebook page that really caught my eye, and it’s something that I’ve felt and experienced in the recent past. Today you’ll hear me read Greg’s entire post, and what he said is something that doesn’t get talked about enough. This is a wide-ranging conversation on what it’s really like to build and grow an online business, and we reveal it all in this episode. We talk about things like why’s it’s actually ok to feel overwhelmed, and how the problems and challenges that you face in business won’t magically disappear as you grow your business. Greg shares what happens when you let someone else’s definition of a “successful” business guide your actions, and how you don’t always need to be climbing a mountain and playing the comparison game with others. This conversation is one that might happen over coffee, or behind closed doors, but not openly on a podcast. We both share our experiences and I think it’s going to provide a lot of value to listeners, which is why I wanted to bring this episode to you today. Before we start the show, I’ve got something to ask. At this time we have over 500 5-Star ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts, which is great, but I’ve set a goal to get 750 of them now by the end of this year, December 31st, 2019. If you’ve gotten value from this podcast, I’d really appreciate you subscribing and leaving an honest rating and review. Take a screenshot, share it on your Instagram Stories and tag me, @rickmulready. When we hit the 750 ratings and reviews, I’ll be raffling off a book bundle of my top 10 business and mindset books for one lucky winner. If you’ve already left a rating and review, just take a screenshot and tag me on Instagram, and you’ll be eligible to win as well! Want to win a 30-minute strategy session with me? I’ll be drawing one winner at random each month, and all you have to do is give me your feedback on this podcast over at http://rickmulready.com/messenger, telling me what you’d like to hear more of - including topics you’d like to see covered, guests, style and frequency of the show! On the Show Today You’ll Learn: What Greg’s evolution as an entrepreneur has looked like to date, and why you can pivot after being known for one thing for so long The fears and hesitations that he faced with his pivot, plus what told him he was on the right path after he made it Why it’s so important to define and strive for your own version of success, not someone else’s The reasons he broke and remodeled his business, and the important lessons he learned from this process The power of keeping your business simple versus complex Why Greg feels that it’s not possible to focus on profit and growth at the same time Feeling overwhelmed is normal (think long-term when it comes to business)
