I was in Dallas with my son for a podcasting conference in August. It was a blast, especially hanging out with my son. We stayed at the downtown Sheraton, which afforded us the ability to walk the city a bit. I also had the opportunity to connect in person with two former guests of the Smart Cleaning School. I went to lunch with Greg Shepard from "Sail Around the World". We had a blast walking around the city and enjoying a quality Mexican meal. Greg is a friend and definitely a mentor. He stretches me big time. The day after lunch with Greg, I had a personal tour and breakfast with Debbie Sardone from "A Buffalo Charges the Storm". Debbie is highly regarded coach in the residential cleaning industry as well as a friend and mentor. Back to my son and walking Dallas. I really, really wanted to visit Dealey Plaza. As a kid, I was enamored with the movie "JFK" starring Kevin Costner. The movie makes a compelling case for a second gunman on the grassy knoll. I have seen the Zapruder film so many times, that I already felt like I've been there. I was wrong. Being there was different. Kenny and I walked into Dealey Plaza. I was in awe. He knew more about the Lincoln assassination than Kennedy, so I described it as best I could. That's when I noticed a guy with a bike helmet and bike showing the Zapruder film and explaining the details of the assassination. Kenny and I walked over to listen. We stood on Elm Street in front of the old Texas State Book Depository as he pointed to the 6th floor corner window. The window is half open with boxes arranged exactly as they were in crime scene photographs. He paused the video on his phone and pointed to the first large "X" on Elm Street. This is where JFK was struck the first time in the neck. He played the Zapruder film. We could see Kennedy grab his neck. It was too surreal. He kept the film running as JFK was struck with the kill shot. He pointed to the second "X" on Elm Street. "On November 22nd, 1963, that's where an American President was assassinated." Chilling. We thanked him for his history lesson and walked the plaza. We stood on the "X" and took a picture. We stood on the grassy knoll and took a picture. We stood where Abraham Zapruder took the movie and yep, we took a picture. It was much, much different in real life. Dealey Plaza is virtually unchanged in 59 years. History is powerful, especially when we can be there in person. There's a reason I shared this story. In the early 1960's, John F. Kennedy was beloved and respected. He was a member of the Democrat Party and generally regarded to have political views left of center. He considered himself a Liberal, yet he opposed Communism, supported the 2nd Amendment, and voted for tax cuts. Those were positions held by the Democrat Party then. Today, these same policy beliefs would be called Republican. Here's what I find interesting. If JFK were running for office right now, he would likely be a moderate Republican. This is not my opinion. You can search it online and read for yourself. That's not the point of this podcast. Here's the point. JFK didn't change. How could he. He's been dead for 59 years. What did change? Now we're asking the right question. It's called the Overton Window and I find it fascinating.Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website

Hey there, everyone! Greg Shepard here, and in today's Podcast episode, we're diving deep into a rather specific situation surrounding the 5-Year Fixed Period Payment Option within TIAA Traditional. As someone who specializes in simplifying the complexities of TIAA accounts, I'm here to shed light on this topic and help you navigate through it.Let me paint the picture for you. Just recently, I had a conversation with an individual from Arizona who found himself in a bit of a predicament with his TIAA retirement plan. He opted for the 5-Year Fixed Period Payment Option within his GRA account with his TIAA Traditional, directing payments to his rollover IRA at Schwab. However, things took an unexpected turn when he turned RMD age, triggering a series of events that he wasn't prepared for.You see, when you select the 5-Year Fixed Period Payment Option and hit RMD age within that period, payments from TIAA are redirected to you directly, rather than to your IRA. This caught this individual off guard, leading to confusion and frustration. So, what's the solution? Well, it's essential to understand the implications of your choices and plan accordingly. In this case, after he became a client, we continued both the RMDs from the IRA and the payments from TIAA, but directed the RMDs to a Trust account to avoid doubling his income. This scenario highlights the importance of being proactive and seeking guidance before making decisions that could have significant consequences for your retirement plan.If you're considering the 5-Year Fixed Period Payment Option or have any questions about your TIAA Traditional investment, don't hesitate to reach out. I'm here to help you navigate through the complexities and ensure you make informed choices.Remember, knowledge is power, and being informed is the key to securing your financial future. Thanks for tuning in, and until next time, this is Greg Shepard from S&A Financial Services, wishing you all the best on your retirement journey.Lastly, I wanted to let you know that my firm is looking to work with and help one new client per month. My firm remains highly specialized in simplifying the TIAA process and putting together strategies that are easy to understand. If you're within a few years, or a few days, of retirement and want to see if you 're a good fit for my firm. Please feel free to contact me to see how we can make your TIAA life a little easier. In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks to the Founder & CEO of BOSS Startup Science, Gregory Shepard.According to Gregory, bad decisions are the number one reason for startup failure. However, he explains that bad advice is the root cause of these bad decisions. Surprisingly, the main contributors to lousy advice are investors and mentors. This is attributed to investors needing firsthand experience as founders and mentors needing to understand the specific needs of each business. Investors may give advice based on their experience working with founders, but with a deep understanding of the operations and details of the business, their advice can be beneficial. For instance, they may push founders to raise money or focus on valuation without considering the long-term consequences. Similarly, mentors who have had success in the past may need more expertise to provide relevant and practical advice for current market conditions. To address this issue, Gregory suggests a model similar to the medical field, where general practitioners refer patients to specialists for specific diagnoses and treatments. In the business world, it is essential to seek advice from specialists who deeply understand the particular challenges a founder is facing. Shepherd emphasizes the importance of teaching founders the necessary skills and knowledge so that they can navigate their entrepreneurial journey independently. However, mentors are still valuable in providing context and guidance. For example, if a founder takes a course on valuation, they will understand how valuation works and be able to defend themselves to an investor. Conversely, mentors can help founders along this learning journey by understanding how they have learned valuation. Key Points from the Episode:Common reasons for startup failureBad decisions as the number one reason for failureInvestors and mentors as main contributors of bad adviceLack of firsthand experience as founders and understanding of specific business needsImportance of seeking advice from specialistsResources and courses offered by Startup ScienceTools such as grant finder and investor networkTeaching founders necessary skills and knowledgeOpenness to suggestions and advice from mentors and interested individualsAbout Gregory Shepard:Gregory is a highly experienced serial entrepreneur, having completed 14 liquidity events, including two notable transactions contributing to a $925M deal that won four PE awards for deals between $250M-$1B. In this episode, Greg Shepard, who specializes in helping those in higher education get the most out of their retirement plan, shares with you the 3 most recent popular questions / topics asked to him from those viewing is YouTube channel. In this episode, Greg shares with you what one can do if their TPA (Transfer Payout Annuity) from TIAA Traditional exceeds that of the RMD (Required Minimum Distribution). Question posed to Greg regarding this issue is can one take the difference (the TPA dollar amount greater than RMD) and direct that towards IRA rather than taking the income? The answer is Yes, but the logistics of accomplishing this is a little trickier than one may think. Also, piggybacking off the first topic, higher ed employees wanted to know if they could transfer TIAA Traditional balance NOT converted to a Lifetime Income Annuity? Again, the answer is a resounding Yes, but listen to Greg as he shares with you how to accomplish this. Lastly, Greg shares with you something he's discussed in prior podcasts. With TIAA Traditional realizing such high interest rates, does it make sense to use this fixed investment as a bond alternative? The answer is Maybe, depending on your contract and how you feel about the liquidity issues around TIAA Traditional. Again, listen to this episode and Greg will talk you through the nuances. YouTube Video Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@higheredretire4534

Before I even begin, let me first share the context of this episode. There are so many people struggling financially in America, which used to include us. I did not come from money. I have never made a lot of money. I am not currently a millionaire. "Ken, why are you teaching this topic?" In a matter of speaking, I am teaching it through my podcast. But the real credit goes to my friend Greg Shepard of Dallas Maids. His interview called "Sail Around the World" was a powerful example of how to think and solve problems in your business. Several months ago, I had the opportunity to hang out with Greg in Dallas for a few hours. Greg is a millionaire, many times over. He is very modest, so I clearly won't share his numbers. I will, however, share his mindset on money and becoming a millionaire. It was the simplest and most believable path I've ever heard to attaining wealth. His mindset is not unique. In fact, most money guides and gurus teach it already. Greg taught me 3 simple steps that every single person can take (no matter where they are from) to attain wealth during their lifetime. And that's the key word... "lifetime". Wealth can be overnight and fast, but not usually. The prevailing mindset now on wealth now is that it's lucky and immediate... right place, right time. It's the lottery mentality. Greg taught me a powerful lesson that day in Dallas. I started implementing it and teaching it to my kids. Now I want to share it with you. This will rock you with its simplicity. What do you need to create wealth? Let's reference the late, Napoleon HIll. You need to "Think and Grow Rich". There is a mental mindset you need to have on work, time, and money that allows you to conceive ideas that you can take action on. You need to believe that it is possible because without belief, you won't take the level of action required to convert an idea into wealth. You also won't be able to attract committed people to your vision that will help you accomplish it. John Maxwell says this. "A leader that lacks confidence has a team that lacks commitment." A strong mental mindset will produce the ideas. Strong ideas with action will build your belief. Results from your action will increase your belief. Increased belief produces confidence. This is where we need to get to. Now, I'll tie this back to my favorite quote in "Think and Grow Rich". "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve." I love this quote... always have since the first time I read it in 2002. Now that you have a basic premise of what it takes to create wealth, I'll share Greg's very simple and practical advice that he has followed in his life.Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website

This process is especially going to be hard for lifestyle companies , where the owners live from their businesses. In this episode we talk about a method that can help lifestyle companies develop a plan not only for recovery but for growth.

Will they sell it, leave it for family or simply close it down? What will happen to their income when they no longer have the business? Today, WTR welcomes Greg Shepard, serial entrepreneur, investor, Forbes author, and Ted X speaker. In this week’s episode, we discuss the steps that occur in the crisis journey, and how to get your business to return to deliberate operations. Ingenious tactics to accumulate wealth, for people who see things differently. Today we're going to talk about crisis management during the pandemic. Our guest is a serial entrepreneur, investor, Forbes author, and Ted X speaker [01:28] He made it a mission for himself with his company BOSS (Business Operating Support System) and they are trying to help companies right now weather this storm of crisis [01:45] Would you mind sharing with our WTR listeners about where you came from and what inspired you to do what you do today? [01:55] Greg: When I was young I was pretty poor and we had next to nothing. When I started to build businesses I got to the other side of that and started to really want to give back [05:05] BOSS has 5 major steps [05:08] The north star: identifying where you want to go and what success looks like [05:10] Strategy: the plan itself [05:13] Execution: actually the process of executing the plan [05:17] Standardization: puts in place processes and procedures and standards [05:29] The continuous improvement loop [05:32] When this crisis happened, we said we need to have a module that you could slide in to get your business from crisis back to business as usual and then move forward with BOSS again [06:00] The crisis journey steps [06:02] The call to action (the virus) [06:07] Meeting your mentor (meeting somebody or something that's going to help you through this process... seeking advice from somebody who's already been there) [07:02] Crossing the threshold (acting on the advice given by the mentor) [07:07] The reward (where you emerge from the crisis as a better company back to normalization [07:14] Back to ordinary business [07:20] Crisis management phases [07:25] Initial assessment and damage control (looking at the immediate and potential long-impacts on this crisis to your business and to the market in general) [07:40] Do what you can to limit the damage to you [07:50] What do you need on your team and what do you have available on your team that you can use to help you get that information? [08:07] Stabilization and a crisis pivot (where you're trying to get more stable and get to a point where you can pivot) [09:14] How can you use existing assets and talents differently to generate revenue or enter new markets? [09:52] How can you adapt to that decision that I just went through? [09:58] Seizing an opportunity (what aspect of your business sector is likely to see permanent change?) [10:30] Returned deliberate operations (what conditions must be met in order for you to exit the crisis and go back to deliberate operations?) [11:09] Circles of concern [11:16] Circle of concern (factors you have no control over) [11:26] Circle of influence (factors you can control) [14:00] You act on the things you can...

His former company, AffiliateTraction, was acquired by eBay Enterprise Marketing Solutions in January 2016 as a part of a cross-brand deal totaling $985M. Greg served as Pepperjam’s Chief Strategy Officer during 2016, charting the company’s trajectory for future products and service offerings, before transitioning into the role of Chief Technology Officer in 2017 to execute on the vision and strategy defined during his time as the Chief Strategy Officer. Clean Up Your Business In this episode, Tom and Greg discuss: How to use SEO tools to increase your reach. How to expand your business. The importance of finding quality employees. Simple steps to build your business from the ground up. Key Takeaways: Treat your employees with respect and reward their services. Don't be afraid to go for the "dull" business idea. Your people are your biggest asset. Expect to pay more for mistakes early on when starting your business. "Try to figure out all of your costs of starting and maintaining your business for the first year...once you figure out all of the costs, write that number down, then multiply that by two- that'll be your REAL cost- and then add a quarter for your mistakes." - Greg Shepard In 2004 Greg left the high tech world to start a maid service. Why a Maid Service? A question he is often asked. After all, he had an amazing career in high tech working at fortune 500 companies. What was he thinking?… A thought that often crossed his mind those first couples of years after starting Dallas Maids. Anyway, to answer that question… Building a business was what Greg wanted to do. He wanted to create something of value. And he wanted to see people, both customers and employees, benefit from that value. This was much more fulfilling than hacking away behind a glowing computer screen all day. And it was the best business decision he ever made. Greg's programming skills easily transferred to starting a cleaning service company: Building a business is like writing code: You write the code (i.e. business’s operation manual) then continually debug it until you have a program (cleaning service system) that produces the same quality results (housecleaning) for the user (customer). And it worked well... Today Dallas Maids is not only one of the largest maid services in Dallas, but no other services have won as many awards as Dallas Maids have for their cleaning service.
