Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)
Larry Ostola speaks with Richard Harris about his book, The Rise of the Neighbourhood in Canada, 1880s–2020s. The Rise of the Neighbourhood in Canada, 1880s–2020s by Richard Harris traces the evolution of Canadian neighbourhoods from the 1880s to the 2020s, highlighting their growing importance amid rising social inequality and immigration. While neighbourhoods now foster fewer social connections, they have become crucial for homeowner investment and children's educational opportunities. The book examines how neighbourhoods, especially in urban areas, impact the lives of the least mobile groups—workers, low-income households, immigrants, women, children, and the elderly—by shaping public health, crime, social capital, and job prospects. It explores the influence of physical and social characteristics, long-term trends, and communications technology on neighbourhood life. As homeownership increased, neighbourhoods became central to financial investment, leading to greater financialization and reduced affordability. Drawing on examples from cities across Canada, the book argues that neighbourhoods' significance will endure, continuing to shape Canadian society and individual life chances in the face of ongoing change. Richard Harris is a professor emeritus of urban geography at McMaster University. Image Credit: University of Toronto Press If you like our work, please consider supporting it: bit.ly/support_WTY. Canada Post's decision to halt its ‘neighbourhood mailing' service is rippling through communities across the country. For small businesses and arts organizations, it was one of the most cost-effective ways to reach their audiences. The Firehall Arts Centre here in Vancouver has relied on this targeted mailing every year to connect with patrons in nearby neighbourhoods. Now, faced with the sudden loss of that tool, the Firehall is left with a $13,000 bill for printing brochures it can't use — and no affordable alternative to get the word out about its shows GUEST: Donna Spencer TITLE: Firehall Arts Centre's Artistic Producer Learn more about your ad choices. How do we mend the fractures of modern life and find our way back to each other? In this conversation, Bryony Greenhill shares a vision for repairing our communities - through land, song and the everyday acts that weave us back together. We explore why so many of us feel disconnected, what's been lost in our modern way of living, and how we can start to rebuild trust, care, and shared purpose in our neighbourhoods and daily lives. Bryony shares stories and ideas for bringing the ‘village' back as a living, breathing way of being together that can meet the challenges of our time. Briony is a teaching artist, a vocal improviser, performer, pianist, composer, and teacher of collaborative vocal improvisation. She's one of the main people who brought this art-form to the UK from West Coast USA where she lived for 10 years. She cares passionately about the transition to regenerative culture, shifting from modernity / coloniality to indigeneity, and particularly in this moment, about peace, justice and decolonisation, and as such is the co-founder of Regenerate UK. We hope this conversation reminds you that you are not alone, and that together we can imagine and build the future we know we belong to. Detective drama with a twist
In this powerful episode of The Radio Vagabond, we explore one of Cape Town's most poignant landmarks: District Six. I begin by chatting with Uber drivers – immigrants from Rwanda, Congo and Malawi – who share what life is really like in the city today. Their stories highlight Cape Town's beauty and its socio-economic challenges, setting a compelling backdrop for what follows. Then we step into the District Six Museum, where history comes alive through photos, maps and personal testimonies. Once a lively, multi‑ethnic neighbourhood of tens of thousands, it was declared a whites‑only area in February 1966. Forced removals displaced over 60,000 residents over the next decade – families torn apart and community destroyed. Today, most of the land remains vacant – a stark reminder of apartheid's legacy. We hear from former inhabitants who recount heartbreaking stories of resistance, loss and survival. This episode is a journey through memory, resilience and the enduring spirit of community amid injustice. See pictures and read more on https://www.theradiovagabond.com/151-the-dark-history-of-district-six/ This Flashback Friday episode was first released on March 9, 2020.
