In the first half, history professor and author William R. Forstchen spoke about preparedness, hardening the energy grid, and what we can learn from recent disasters, including the flood in North Carolina and the LA fires. Recounting his harrowing experiences in North Carolina during Hurricane Helene, he said there was major devastation, such as in the town of Swannanoa, which was "totally wiped out." Though he was without power for three weeks, he noted that that would be "nothing compared to what could happen if there's an EMP attack." Elaborating on the dangers of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attacks, he explained that they can be triggered by a nuclear detonation or a solar flare. An EMP would blow everything out within a second, affecting everything from high-tension power lines to aircraft in flight. He pointed out the alarming fact that many components of the US electrical grid are over 40 years old and in desperate need of modernization and strengthening. We have become so dependent on electricity, what happens when it no longer works? He urged listeners to consider their emergency preparedness, particularly regarding food and medication supplies. He expressed frustration over the lack of preparedness despite significant investments in green energy, arguing that the government spent billions, but the money should have gone into developing infrastructure. He is hopeful that the new presidential administration, along with local representatives, will turn their attention to protecting our electrical grid. On his property, Forstchen said he had a number of tall pine trees removed near his house that was luckily completed before the hurricane.------------In the latter half, author Marc Hartzman shared accounts of the weird and unusual, as well as presented his research on the fascinating practice of sword swallowing, documented in his new book "To the Hilt," co-written with sword swallower Dan Meyer. The project began seven years ago when Meyer, who has been swallowing swords for 25 years, approached Hartzman with a wealth of historical information about the art. Meyer's motivation to become a sword swallower stemmed from overcoming childhood bullying. The practice is absolutely genuine with rigorous training involved, and sword swallowers must master techniques to suppress their gag reflex and navigate the esophagus safely, Hartzman explained. He also recounted tragic historical incidents, including the story of Maud D'Auldin, who died after a blade nicked her esophagus during a performance. Among the strange stories he presented was that of Jim the Wonder Dog, an extraordinary "psychic" canine who could identify various tree species and even predict Kentucky Derby winners by selecting them with his paw. Hartzman detailed the chilling tale of the Phantom Barber of Pascagoula, who infamously cut the hair of young girls during World War II. "Parents were locking their windows at night, terrified of this hair-cutting intruder," he said. Additionally, Hartzman touched on the history of Ouija boards, noting their rise in popularity during the spiritualism movement of the late 1800s. He recalled a disturbing incident where a mother allegedly instructed her daughter to shoot her father after consulting a Ouija board. The daughter reportedly did so, though the father survived the shooting.

132. How an EMP or GMD Could Destroy the Power Grid and Create Chaos

The POWER Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 13, 2023 22:32

Perhaps the most devastating thing that could happen in any developed country would be widespread catastrophic damage to its electric power grid. Nearly everything in an industrialized nation relies on electricity to function. Without it, normal water supplies, sewer systems, and communication services are cut off. Furthermore, things like food and transportation are quickly affected when power is down for extended periods. A severe electromagnetic pulse (EMP) or geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) event could take the power grid down for months, and possibly even for years. An EMP is a very intense pulse of electromagnetic energy, typically caused by the detonation of a nuclear bomb or other high-energy explosive device. A GMD, meanwhile, can be caused when a solar eruption produces a coronal mass ejection (CME) that travels from the sun to the Earth. A direct hit by an extreme CME would cause widespread power blackouts disabling everything that uses electricity. Some experts have suggested that a major EMP or GMD hit could result in the death of up to 90% of the U.S. population. What makes the event so devastating is that the U.S. power grid is not well-protected from such a strike, and the country is not prepared to recover quickly. Dr. William R. Forstchen, author of more than 40 books including the groundbreaking novel One Second After, which has been credited with raising national awareness to the potential threat posed by an EMP strike, explained the situation as a guest on The POWER Podcast. Forstchen noted that the U.S. power grid is vulnerable to such an event for a number of reasons. “The average component in our electrical grid is 40 to 50 years old. We are running our electricity on a 1970s, early-1980s industry. We're not modernizing it,” he said. A few years ago, the federal government began to address the problem. “The Trump administration finally started taking action about six months before the election in 2020. They mandated DOD [the Department of Defense], DOE [the Department of Energy], all the different agencies to submit a comprehensive analysis of what needs to be done that would then follow by legislative action in the next Congress,” Forstchen explained. However, when Trump lost the election, President Biden immediately killed the initiative, he said. Forstchen said relatively minor investments could vastly improve the situation. He suggested stockpiling key components is an important first step. “A large transformer for a major substation can cost several million dollars. From the time of ordering one until the big truck pulls up and we start to unload it is two or more years,” Forstchen said. Furthermore, he noted that most of the equipment and components that might be needed to repair the grid are now sourced from other countries, mainly China, which means the U.S. may not be able to get supplies, especially if the attack was initiated by one of those countries. “We should be building a strategic reserve of key electrical components,” he said. Additionally, Forstchen said the U.S. should focus on a “lifeline to recovery.” He suggested hardening 10% of the grid could act as an insurance policy for the nation. “Let's say the rest goes down, but we have those lifelines out there that can be used to start repairing things, bringing supplies, and communicate—big thing, communication and transportation,” said Forstchen. Risks could be substantially reduced with relatively minor investments. “I argue $20 to $30 billion a year would at least start ensuring some responsible response to this problem,” Forstchen said.

Perhaps you have never heard of an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) and don't understand what the implications from one being used as a weapon against the United States or other national powers. That is what this podcast does, looking at the full impacts of such a weapon being used in the future. The guest for this podcast is William R. Forstchen who is a New York Times bestselling author and holds a doctoral degree from Purdue University with a specialization in military history and technology. He is a noted expert historian and public speaker and has been interviewed on FOX News, C-SPAN, and Coast to Coast AM on topics ranging from history to technology and cultural issues, to space technology development, to security threats. And, he has a novel One Second After that is a New York Bestseller that addresses via fiction what might happen following the use of an EMP weapon. Correction: Since this podcast went live a listener provided this link: Top Transformer Manufacturers and Suppliers in the USA. In the podcast as it was recorded, it was mentioned that “there are no transformers manufactured here in the United States.” As evidenced by the link above, there are such manufacturers.  The size and capabilities of transformers offered by these USA based manufacturers is unknown.Dynamis, a leading provider of information management software and security solutions, is a sponsor of this podcast.Eric Holdeman is a professional emergency manager who is passionate about providing information that can help families, businesses & governments become better prepared for disasters of all types. Recent geopolitical events and other natural disasters in recent years have shown how reliant we are on electricity, and how vulnerable the power grid can be. Rebuilding the grid following a nightmare scenario such as an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack could take years, so preparation from an individual, town and regional basis can be key to accelerating recovery. We chat about this topic with Dr. William R. Forstchen, author of “One Second After” and other books that explore life in a small town following such an attack.

William R. Forstchen has a Ph.D. from Purdue University with specializations in Military History and the History of Technology. He is a Faculty Fellow and Professor of History at Montreat College. He is the author of fifty books including the New York Times bestselling series One Second After, the Lost Regiment series, and the award-winning young adult novel, We Look Like Men of War. He has also authored numerous short stories and articles about military history and military technology. Dr. Forstchen resides near Asheville, North Carolina.Could ‘Unknown Factors' in Schools Stop Active Shooters in Their Tracks?Washington, D.C., July 25, 2022 — While politicians wring their hands and debate complex gun control legislation, military expert and historian Dr. William R. Forstchen offers a strategy that could be implemented in time for the upcoming school year. “We arm some teachers,” Forstchen said in a recent interview. “We should select people who are ex-military, ex-law enforcement. Train them, train them, train them. Compensate them. Put them in the schools, armed. They become the ‘unknown factor.' I think this could make a major difference.”  Besides exhaustively vetting and evaluating these chosen members of the school faculty, anonymity is paramount. In fact, Forstchen added, “If they ever tell anyone or boast, ‘oh gee I'm armed now,' fire them. You want these people to be anonymous.” Forstchen's perspective is informed by his 45 years of teaching and by the Beslan school siege in 2004 — an Islamic terror attack against a Russian school that left 333 people dead, including 186 children. He believes that arming teachers could serve as a deterrent, or at the very least, a way to stop school shooters in their tracks. “They would be the ‘unknown factor' in every single school,” Forstchen wrote in a recent opinion editorial in The Washington Times. “They would be the men and women who, in those first precious seconds, would react rather than hide, be it against a lone killer or even a trained team of killers. They could buy time for other responders to rush in, rather than wait outside while mayhem runs rampant within.“They would be the ones who would willingly put their lives on the line … but would be the surprise factor in a school that would fight back when seconds counted. They might not stop, but they would at least slow down an aggressor and buy time for a swift response … In so doing, they just might prevent a Beslan massacre from happening here.”   The Beslan incident also prompted Forstchen to write the book, Day of Wrath, which presents the unsettling scenario of ISIS-inspired teams launching a coordinated attack on schools — a threat he views as all-too realistic. William R. Forstchen is a New York Times bestselling author and holds a doctoral degree from Purdue University with a specialization in military history and technology. He is a noted expert historian and public speaker and has been interviewed on FOX News, C-SPAN, and Coast to Coast on topics ranging from history to technology and cultural issues, to space technology development, to security threats. To read the entire op-ed, visit https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2022/jun/7/train-and-arm-teachers-they-would-be-the-unknown-f/. Forstchen.  I heard about this book on Mac and Katherine Barron’s podcast, Catholic in a Small Town, during their entertainment section.  I’ve been on the waitlist for this book for nearly a year.  I expect I read this book much directly after our pandemic than I would have prior to the pandemic. The book describes the events that happen after an EMP event which takes out all the electronics in the United States.  An EMP or Electromagnetic pulse is a potentially real threat that could happen, this isn’t just science fiction. Reading this during the pandemic brings the issues we are facing into perspective.  The pandemic has changed the way we live, but it could be so much worse.  We still have internet and can communicate with others, plenty of food to fill our stomachs- think about how many people have taken up baking, medicine and healthcare are still readily available, and we can generally still travel wherever we want without fear. Another interesting perspective I took from the book is access to food.  As a Midwesterner, a variety of fresh food is accessible, many people have home gardens, and I drive by fields of crops every day.  The insight the book gave me is because of fewer opportunities for growing crops and higher population, the central US truly feeds those on the coasts.  I hadn’t really thought about the work that goes into processing and shipping food across the country, even though my husband is a farmer and drives a semi. There are very dark points of this book, which just reflect the true reality of what could happen.  I encourage you to read this book and consider how you would respond to the situation the book’s characters are presented with.  This book is a trilogy, but it seems like the next two books get more into the politics of what happens afterwards and I’m not sure I’m up for reading that at this point. What books have you read that have made you think differently about your first world problems? https://www.amazon.com/Second-After-John-Matherson-Novel/dp/0765327252 https://www.macandkatherine.com/ Thanks for joining me.  Be sure to check our show notes for links to inspiration items and …  don't forget to stop and smell the roses. To try and prevent permanent damage, everything goes dark prior to the hit: global communications are shut down; hospital emergency generators are disconnected; the entire internet, media broadcasting, and cell phone systems are turned off. Will the world's population successfully defend itself in the wake of the CME, or will mass panic lead to the breakdown of society as we know it? William R. He is the author of over forty books, several of which have been New York Times best sellers. His groundbreaking novel, One Second After, published in 2009, is credited by many with being integral to the start of the “prepper movement” by raising national awareness of the potential threat of an electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) strike. He, along with other experts on terrorism and the military situation in the Middle East, also firmly believes that it is time America took serious note of the threats leveled by ISIS: that we are their next target and that it is not a question of if. It is now a question of when.  Links http://www.onesecondafter.com http://www.newsmax.com/PeterPry/emp-nuclear-pyongyang/2017/05/04/id/788094/ http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/expert-north-koreas-h-bomb-is-super-emp-weapon/article/2579715

If you think this is just another EMP book, you may be in for a surprise. Tigers and Gorillas included at no extra charge. EMPs (Electro Magnetic Pulses) is now and have been for a while, a hot Prepper topics. EMPs as an antagonist are in many ways like Zombies A perfect villain with all the pitfalls needed to scare the crap out of you. And they present a wonderland of problems to contend with. But, unlike Zombies, EMPs are this side of catastrophes that are possible. The technology, will, and opportunity exists. Most of the serious and balanced minds in prep have long since considered an EMP to be an outlier scenario, however. While the tech and will exists, the technological hurdles have long been considered too great for most aggressors. Cal Wilson sides with William R. Forstchen and others. And he shows us all the ways an EMP attack isn't just possible, but probably, in his latest work: E.M.P.: The End Of The Grid As We Know It (All At Once Book 1) ~ EMP Attack Topics Discussed: ~ * Who is author Cal Wilson * How he came to writing * Why Cal chose EMP Attacks as the antagonist for his most recent book * The history of EMP Attack research * What zoo animals have to do with TEOTWAWKI * The current state of research on the topic * What will happen to Nuclear Power plants after an attack * Preparing for life after an EMP Attack ~ Become a supporting member here: http://www.itrh.net ~ Resources from this episode can be found at: http://www.intherabbithole.com/e214

Forstchen: After defeating the designs of the alleged federal government, John Matherson and his community have returned their attention to restoring the technologies and social order that existed prior to the EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse) attack. Then the government announces that it’s ceding large portions of the country to China and Mexico. The Constitution is no longer in effect, and what’s left of the U.S. Army has been deployed to suppress the rebellion in the remaining states. The man sent to confront John is General Bob Scales, John’s old commanding officer and closest friend from prewar days. Will General Scales follow orders, or might he be the crucial turning point in the quest for an America that is again united? As the dubious Federal government increasingly curtails liberty and trades away sovereignty, it might just get exactly what it fears: revolution.
