“Preethi Nair is a one-woman whirlwind” – Harper Collins   Preethi Nair worked as a management consultant and gave it up to follow her dream and write her first book, Gypsy Masala. Having been rejected by most publishers, she set up her own publishing company and PR agency to publish and promote the book all whilst putting on a suit and pretending to go to work. Working under the alias of Pru, Preethi managed to gain substantial coverage and after two years of a roller-coaster journey, she signed a three-book deal with HarperCollins. She won an Asian Women of Achievement Award for her endeavors and “Pru” was also shortlisted as Publicist of the Year for the PPC awards. Having never acted before (not even at school), Preethi went on to write, act, and produce Sari: The Whole Five Yards, a sell-out one-woman show in the West End. Preethi adapted this play into the novel Unravelling, which has been optioned for television. Preethi is also a visiting professor at various business schools, teaching modules on creativity and journalling for personal leadership. ---- SOCIALS: Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/preethi-nair-author-keynote-speaker-md-29471a4/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/sariwhole5yard Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/writerwala/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sarithewhole5yards Website: www.preethinair.com

Jessamyn Violet is a writer and musician out of Venice Beach, CA. Her debut novel, ‘Secret Rules to Being a Rockstar', was published in April 2023 by Three Rooms Press. Short fiction can be found in ‘Ploughshares', ‘Lit Angeles', ‘805 Art + Lit Journal', and more. Mallory is the host of the podcast Textual Healing, where she dives into the fusion of literature and music, and co-hosts That Horrorcast with Dmitry Samarov where they get lost in the weird world of horror films. Her latest book, ‘I Keep My Visions To Myself', just came out from With an X Books.    Kirsti MacKenzie is the author of ‘Better to Beg', as well as editor in chief of ‘Major 7th Magazine'. Her work has been published in ‘HAD', ‘Rejection Letters', ‘trampset', ‘Autofocus', ‘Maudlin House', ‘Identity Theory', and elsewhere.   Claire Hopple is the author of six books and the fiction editor at XRAY. Her stories have appeared in ‘Wigleaf', ‘Vol. 1 Brooklyn', ‘Forever Mag', and others. She grew up in the woods of Pennsylvania and currently lives in Asheville, NC. Her next book, ‘Take it Personally', is forthcoming from Stalking Horse Press in February 2025.    Each of these four talented authors brings a unique perspective to the conversation. From the creative sparks that ignite our own work to the cultural impacts of rock novels in general, we'll navigate the winding paths of character development and uncovering the challenges of breathing life into fictional musicians while honoring the essence of their real-life counterparts. We'll delve into the stigmas surrounding rock novels, dissecting perceptions and stereotypes to reveal the nuanced portrayals crafted by these talented authors. And of course, no discussion on writing fiction about musicians would be complete without reflecting on current trends and the evolution of the genre, including the explosive success of Taylor Jenkins Reid's rock novel ‘Daisy Jones & The Six'. So, tune in and turn up the volume as Rock is Lit takes you on a journey through the pages of rock literature, where every word is a chord and every story a kickass concert. You can purchase a copy of The Burden of Joy HERE. Great chat, amazing book! Thanks for listening. Kyler --- Synopsis: Lexi Kent-Monning's debut novel, The Burden of Joy, is an incessant dagger to the heart. After Lexi's husband leaves her on Valentine's Day to join a commune that time forgot, her home stops belonging to her. Instead, she discovers a parade of dead animals, a man who turns her blue eyes green, true love in equal parts cocaine and MDMA, and a revolving door of solitude. In the end, Lexi must ask herself, is her craving to nurture virtuous or hedonistic? In Scott Mitchel May's latest novel, a serial killer who believes he's possessed by an Irish demi-god haunts Madison while a city detective tracks his patterns for years. A former Capitol intern becomes a separationist working to retake the American Southwest. The US is led by a President who speaks gibberish except when on the air, and a Wisconsin state senator who is past his prime casts a deciding vote to secede from the nation amid growing continental conflict.Plots collide and timelines overlap in Breakneck: Or, It Happened Once in America (Anxiety Press, April 2023) a full-length novel from Madison author Scott Mitchel May. It could be described as cynical, neo-noir, postmodern thriller, with plenty of authentic Madison geography (Mickey's Dairy Bar! Edgewood and UW-Madison! Eken Park! Last April, I recorded an episode called Ghosting, Reconsidered where I asked the question: is ghosting always a negative thing?  As you know, I'm not afraid of making bold statements or bold predictions. And for my money, I'd rather hear nothing than receive an email that's rude, weird, or cringe. ✔️ Several years ago, job seekers were very vocal about, "Tell us anything, even if it's just a form letter. But for the love of all that's good and holy, don't ghost us." Is that still accurate now in the midst of The Great Resignation?

D.T. Robbins from Rejection Letters joins Mallory in an attempt to convince Dmitry that Scream is a good movie. There's not much more to be said. They discuss their favorite scary movies, what is the actual definition of a horror film, and many weird things after that but Scream is the focus. They go off topic only to discuss California, YouTube, Mallory's fear of clowns, and Dmitry's lost Henry Portrait Of A Serial Killer T-Shirt. For those who somehow don't know what Scream is about: A year after her mother's death, Sidney Prescott and her friends started experiencing some strange phone calls. They later learned the calls were coming from a crazed serial killer, in a Ghostface mask and a large black robe, looking for revenge. His phone calls usually consist of many questions, the main one being: What's your favorite scary movie? The film turns into a bloodbath where the masked killer haunts the town and stalks Sidney Prescott. Her boyfriend Billy Loomis becomes the main suspect along with Sidney's father. Local Tabloid News Reporter Gail Weathers and Woodsbroro's Deputy Dwight "Dewey" Riley investigate and try to figure out who the killer is and if it's the same person who killed Sid's mom the year before. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thathorrorshow/support
