I have a pet peeve, and it's the messages going around on Social Media that if you haven't "Niched down" to a minute level you won't be successful... quite frankly it's bullshit. There are so many businesses out there that would not benefit from only targeting for example "accountants" and I myself have pushed back on many marketers and business coaches who have tried to tell me I should only be selling to one industry. Why do I know that this is detrimental to my business and truly shit advice?Because my marketing model and the things I implement for businesses are unique... sure there is a base of how I work and what I do, but the whole point of what I offer is the fact that it's not cookie-cutter.So in this episode, I hopefully open your mind up to thinking about nicheing differently and think about how your messaging needs to hit the market you choose.Being so specific about who we serve that we ignore entire markets begging for our service/product isn't beneficial and it won't give you longevity in your business. If there is one thing I see that really stresses educators in business out and stops them dead in their tracks, it is choosing their niche. I have never fully understood why people have put so much pressure on themselves to choose the 'perfect' niche and anything beyond that isn't even worth starting, and so the result: They never actually start. The honest truth is that you are worrying way too much about the wrong things, and in this episode, I show you why by sharing my niche journey with you. You will learn how I started in the 'wrong' niche, but how that was the perfect stepping stone to get me to where I wanted to be. If you're changing niches every two seconds, or you are still putting all this pressure on yourself to have the 'perfect' niche and you're frozen to move forward then this podcast episode is for you. If the traditional marketing chatter around selecting a target audience and finding your niche don't resonate with you, you are NOT alone! Have you ever begrudgingly created an Ideal Customer Avatar or ICA even though you knew it felt wrong? If you are following a calling or some inner guidance, it can be a scary journey. Why?Your heart will always guide you to something that's unknown. However, many people will wait until they feel comfortable or try to figure out what's on the other side before they leap. This isn't how life works, and the patterns can keep you stuck. What I really admire are those who are taking their leaps even if it goes against their mind's logic. Molly ended her teaching career, sold her possessions, sold her house and moved interstate, not knowing where it would take her.Her realtor even questioned why she was selling the house!By listening to this chat, it might also reveal the scary leaps your heart is guiding you to take. A lot of us dreamed of starting our own business and being our own boss, but may not have known exactly what type of business we wanted to go into. Cafes and shops sound dreamy, coaching sounds fulfilling, crafting would be a great outlet...but the reality is that these business ideas are oversaturated in most areas. If you want to not only stay in business, but thrive as you serve your market and earn the revenue you desire, you'd better have a unique twist to your offering that really makes you stand out. Our guest today took a different approach to going into business, by seeing a need that was going unmet in the marketplace, and creating a startup that would fill the gap. Michael Ly is the CEO and co-founder of Reconciled, a completely online-based accounting firm which lets business owners get their bookkeeping done in a fast, easy, and painless way with help from a certified accountant.
The legal environment these days almost demands that lawyers become experts in their practice areas. So before you can begin building your authority in a specific practice area or industry, it's important to select a niche that provides the best possibilities for growth. That's what we're discussing in this episode: how to identify the five qualities of a lucrative business niche to build your law practice around. Joining me today is Jacob Slowik, a partner with Joseph, Aleem & Slowik who represents healthcare businesses and co-author of the book, Small Law; Big Success: How to Use Business Niche Specialization to Grow a Multi-Million Dollar Law Practice. Jake and his law firm partners built a multi-million-dollar law practice before they were 30 years old. That is impressive! They did this by using a novel strategy of business niche specialization. Prior to Joseph, Aleem & Slowik, LLC, Mr. Slowik was an attorney with the real estate practice group of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP in New York, New York. Mr. Slowik is a graduate of Harvard Law School and received his B.S. in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University.
