Welcome to “Avoiding Accidental Armageddon: Nuclear Fail-Safe Reviews”, the second episode of our second Ok, Doomer! podcast series. Hosted by the ELN's Deputy Executive Director Bekki Field and outgoing Project and Communications Officer Edan Simpson, this episode explores how nuclear fail-safe reviews can reduce the risk of accidental, mistaken or unauthorised nuclear use. To begin, Bekki and Edan are joined once again by Julia Berghofer, Programme Lead for the ELN's Nuclear Weapons and New Technologies programme, who explains what “fail-safe” means in the nuclear realm and why safeguards must be regularly reviewed. Julia also outlines the ELN and Asia-Pacific Leadership Network's work since 2024 examining how different nuclear-armed states understand fail- safe, what terminology they use, what measures they have adopted and how openly they discuss them. Edan's panel features Deborah Rosenblum, Joel Petersson Ivre and Héloïse Fayet. Together, they discuss: Why fail-safe reviews can be politically controversial. How trust, deterrence and geopolitical competition shape states' approaches. Whether fail-safe reviews can serve as confidence - and security-building measures. How much transparency is useful or realistic. What role non-nuclear-weapon states can play in supporting wider discussion. Moving on to “Turn Back the Clock”, Bekki is joined by Tom McKane. They discuss the history of nuclear fail-safe reviews, the reasons non-nuclear-weapon states have had limited engagement with the issue, and what earlier efforts can teach policymakers seeking to reduce nuclear risks today. Finally, in “The Debrief”, Bekki, Edan and Julia reflect on the tensions between secrecy and transparency and the different national approaches to fail-safe. Welcome to “Nuclear bombs and bots”, the first episode of our second series! Hosted by the ELN's Deputy Executive Director, Bekki Field, this episode explores the relationship between new “disruptive” technologies and nuclear weapons. Bekki and Alex discuss the history of these technological advancements, how technology changes threa perceptions, and how equipped the expert community is to cope with the pace of technological change. Across the world, despots and and wannabe dictators are deploying new tools, both legal and technological, to stifle dissent and oppress. Today's guest is Jonathon W. Penney, the author of Chilling Effects: Repression, Conformity, and Power in the Digital Age, a book from Cambridge University Press that explores the weaponization of surveillance, censorship, and technologies of control and offers a roadmap for the reforms necessary to push back.

This episode explores how cattle producers can make informed decisions when considering new technologies, products, or services for their operations. The discussion emphasizes the importance of evaluating both costs and benefits, including upfront expenses, recurring fees, labor savings, and potential productivity gains. Producers are encouraged to use tools such as partial budgets and spreadsheet-based “what-if” analyses to determine whether a technology is likely to provide a positive return in their specific operation. The hosts also stress that research results from other operations may not always translate directly to a producer's own environment, making careful evaluation and limited on-farm testing valuable when possible. Examples such as virtual fencing, electronic identification systems, and feed additives illustrate the challenges of assigning economic value to both direct and indirect benefits. In the second half of the episode, the team tackles several common nutrition myths. They explain that while lush green grass often supplies adequate energy and protein, mineral supplementation may still be necessary depending on soil and forage conditions. They also note that mineral consumption is often driven more by salt intake than by a specific mineral deficiency. Discussion of creep feeding reveals that calves frequently substitute supplemental feed for forage rather than reducing milk consumption, making the economics highly situation-dependent. Finally, the hosts clarify that overfeeding replacement heifers can contribute to calving difficulty if they become excessively fat, but moderate increases in nutrition have relatively little effect on calf birth weight. Overall, the episode encourages producers to rely on careful analysis and evidence rather than assumptions when making management decisions.

ACT leader David Seymour wants New Zealand to become a testing ground for emerging technologies - by allowing companies to temporarily bypass regulations through a regulatory exemption scheme. Seymour says the existing rules are 'prohibitive' and that the 'innovation trials' will help get new technology like self-driving vehicles, agricultural drones and crypto going into New Zealand faster. He says it's important we start experimenting more if we want to see technology appear in New Zealand, instead of overseas nations overlooking the country. He shares his story from his beginnings to now, describing what college life was like as a young computer enthusiast. He says "If you look at my 1986 yearbook, I think it was my sixth grade class, it says computer scientist for my career path. So I had a love of computers when I was really young. I guess I knew what field I wanted to get into right off the bat." He describes different career paths that all led him to his current position.
