Davida Herzl is co-founder and CEO of Aclima, where she leads a team pioneering a new way to diagnose the health of our air and track pollution. A Public Benefit Corporation, Aclima measures air pollution and greenhouse gasses with block-by-block resolution. The company's enterprise software, Aclima Pro, translates billions of scientific measurements into analytics for companies, governments, and communities to reduce emissions and improve public health. Aclima has been driven by two questions: Where is pollution coming from and who is it impacting? Today the company operates the largest mobile sensor network on Earth, creating datasets of hyperlocal greenhouse gas levels and air pollution never before available. David is proud of the work that the Aclima team is doing. “Climate change is the most pressing issue of our time,” she says. “And there are so many intersecting problems -- environmental justice, infrastructure, and more. Our data is a critical part of the solution because transparency ensures accountability and also enables actors across society to take informed climate action.”

The benefits of understanding and taking the scientific approach.   “One of the reasons I've been successful to the degree that I have at USGBC, is that I came at it as a scientist. I'm trying to ask questions and test them with data. If I had come into USGBC as an architect, as an engineer, as a planner, I would have been locked into a tribe. Leading analysts estimate that more than 7% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are generated by small-to-medium buildings. Too often, these buildings are terribly inefficient—wasting as much as 50% of the energy they consume, which significantly drives up energy bills—and unhealthy—with deadly viruses and other toxins circulating freely. What's more, many of these buildings primarily serve low-to-moderate income Americans, who often lack the upfront capital needed for proven upgrades. In part driven by his childhood experience with energy poverty and the related localized pollution, Donnel Baird founded BlocPower seven years ago to ensure that everyone, especially those with lower incomes and/or from other disadvantaged backgrounds, has access to greener, healthier, smarter, and more cost-effective homes and buildings. To date, BlocPower has helped to identify, finance, and upgrade more than 1,200 buildings—many in communities that had previously been left behind in our transition to a greener economy. In this episode, host Chad Reed dives deep with Donnel into how his professional experiences in community organizing and with the Obama Administration led him to his entrepreneurial efforts to decarbonize buildings in disadvantaged communities. Chad also speaks with Donnel about how best to ensure all communities—whether in neglected urban areas or deindustrialized rural areas—share in the economic benefits of a cleaner, greener economy. We hope you find this discussion as inspiring and entertaining as we did.BlocPowerWashington Post: This US city just voted to decarbonize every single buildingDonnel Baird on LinkedInEpisode recorded: October 6, 2021

It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. U.S. STEPS CLOSER TO NEW $12,500 EV TAX CREDIT"The US Senate Finance Committee on Wednesday approved a bill to increase the tax credit for electric vehicles assembled by union workers in the US up to $12,500. This would apply to electric vehicles up to a price of $80,000." reports Chris Randall at Electrive: "The new law would remove this existing cap, but a different, future limit is included in the proposal: For example, the tax credit would be phased out over a three-year period once 50 per cent of car sales in the US are electric cars. Now for the proposed increase in the credit up to $12,500: The proponents of the bill, led by Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, propose to increase the $7,500 tax credit by $2,500 for vehicles assembled in the US and by another $2,500 for vehicles manufactured in plants whose employees are members of or represented by a union." Yahoo! News points out: “That would mean smaller credits to automakers such as Tesla, Volkswagen and others who do not have U.S. union workers, and companies building EVs outside the United States. The EV incentives are estimated to cost $31.6 billion through 2031, according to a congressional estimate. The bill must still be approved by the full Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. The bill also includes a 30% tax credit for manufacturers to retool or build new facilities to produce advanced energy technologies including batteries and new incentives to purchase commercial electric vehicles." https://www.electrive.com/2021/05/27/us-senate-approves-increase-of-ev-tax-credit/ https://news.yahoo.com/u-senate-panel-advances-ev-025709643.html RIVIAN DELAYS DELIVERIES OF THE R1T LAUNCH EDITION BY ONE MONTH"Rivian said that deliveries of the R1T Launch Edition, the limited edition release of its first series of “electric adventure vehicles,” will be delayed by a month, according to an update on its website." reports Tech Crunch: "Customers who preordered can now expect to start receiving their pickup trucks in July instead of June, with Launch Edition deliveries to be completed by Spring 2022. The change was first spotted by the Rivian Forum. The one-month delay was due to a combination of small issues, including delays on shipping containers, the ongoing chip shortage as well as ensuring the servicing piece is properly set up, a Rivian spokesperson said." https://techcrunch.com/2021/05/27/rivian-delays-deliveries-of-the-r1t-launch-edition-by-one-month/ FORMER WAYMO FINANCE CHIEF DWYER JOINS EV STARTUP RIVIAN"Rivian Automotive Inc., the electric-vehicle startup backed by Amazon.com Inc., has hired a former finance chief from Alphabet Inc.’s self-driving arm Waymo LLC. Gerard Dwyer, who was Waymo’s chief financial officer, joined Rivian this week as vice president of business finance, according to a post on LinkedIn." says Bloomber: "Waymo, long viewed as the leader among autonomous-driving startups, is seeking to raise as much as $4 billion from outside investors and also considering an IPO, Bloomberg reported last week, citing people familiar with the plans." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-27/former-waymo-finance-chief-dwyer-joins-ev-start-up-rivian FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC GOOGLE STREET VIEW CAR IS A JAGUAR I-PACE"For the past few years, Google has equipped its mapping vehicles with air pollution sensors. Google worked with Jaguar Land Rover on the first all-electric Street View car that will be tasked with measuring air quality in Dublin, Ireland." says 9to5Mac: "A Jaguar I-Pace is being used for this effort, and it will see a roof mounting for the tall Street View camera, as well as a new rear-window glass for wiring and redesigned interior switchgear for sensor controls. The visual system was last updated in 2017 to provide higher-resolution images while being less bulky. The vehicle will also be equipped with Aclima mobile air sensors that record nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, as well as fine particles (PM2.5). Meanwhile, Google is partnering with the Dublin City Council on the Environmental Insights Explorer tool that provides local data on air quality." https://9to5google.com/2021/05/25/electric-google-street-view-car/ FIRST RIDE IN THE ELECTRIC LUCID AIR SEDAN "The ride was comfortable, and while the Air makes the low-speed pedestrian noises all EVs are required to make, nothing is piped into the cabin. That means riding in an Air is a mostly calm and serene experience, at least until the driver floors the throttle. After my first encounter back in 2017, I was impressed with how well-built the Air was.

Stephanie Wong (@swongful) and Carter Morgan (@carterthecomic) take us on a journey recapping serial entrepreneurs, surprising lessons learned, critical technology pivots and uncovering there is no silver bullet to security. The episodes of 2020 surprisingly revealed many common themes between founders, CEO’s and their respective companies. While dual pandemics plagued this year, we kept the recordings going in hopes of giving listeners a platform to learn, grow from and simply enjoy. This year, we learned what it takes to start and scale global businesses. Being flexible and adjusting to trends and new technologies was a big theme, and we were lucky to hear advice from multiple professionals about how to keep companies effective as the world changes. The complete pivot CEO Dirk Hoerig of commercetools took early in the company's journey is a great example. Pendo CEO Todd Olson enlightened us on the importance of product-led growth in business and how sometimes things have to break to get better.Bringing together industry tools to create something more than the sum of their parts was a big take away from episodes like TrueFit and Change Healthcare. Flexible, indexed data that's easy to use was another point a lot of our guests touched on, and MongoDB's product offerings focus on just that. We talked online security with guests like MongoDB's Lena Smart and how important it is to have functional, secure networks for users and employees. From tips on productivity and remote working to understanding the social constructs that affect workplace comfort, we've tackled some of the big issues of 2020 and learned how entrepreneurs have leveraged technology to help overcome these challenges. Guests like Mandy Price taught us about the anonymous reporting system, Kanarys, that's working to create a safe and inclusive workplace. Aeris CEO Marc Jones joined us in a candid conversation about race and entrepreneurship as well, pointing out how a lack of support can create risk-aversion and limit opportunities for certain races of people. Companies like Upswing are striving to change that by supporting marginalized people through college and beyond. And when companies support diversity, great things can happen, Quitebit was a perfect example of this. Outside the workplace, entrepreneurs are working for a healthier planet as well. Our very first episode tackled air pollution. We learned from Founder and CEO Davida Herzl, how Aclima is revolutionizing air quality improvement through data mapping and Olea Edge Analytics is helping companies conserve water with their unique meters.Check out all the episodes from this year to hear in-depth conversations with these guests and more! Welcome to "How I Launched This: A SaaS Story" from Google Cloud! In our first installment of the podcast, your hosts Stephanie Wong (@swongful) and Carter Morgan (@carterthecomic) talk with the folks at San Francisco-based Aclima about environmental intelligence. Aclima's air quality mapping platform aggregates and analyzes air pollution factors to aid in the diagnosis and remedy of these problems for a safer breathing environment, both locally and globally. The air quality data is collected by sensors on vehicles and input into the SaaS platform for customers. The analyzed data can quickly be interpreted so appropriate measures can be taken to mitigate air pollution.Davida Herzl, CEO of Aclima, starts the show explaining why she felt the world needed Aclima and how advancements in technology made it possible to collect, store, and analyze data in a new and more useful way. With their hyperlocal data collection system, clients can see city-block by city-block numbers and learn how the air quality affects each individual person, making the system much more personal. The data can of course also be analyzed in larger numbers for city-wide, state-wide, or even global solutions.Davida and Robert Murphy, VP Strategy and Business Development, later dive into the technical side of Aclima, describing their technology stack, development procedures, and suggestions of SaaS best practices. Davida also elaborates on the development of the hardware and how these sensors are deployed. She addresses the growth of Aclima and how company management and technologies have changed and grown with the business. She wraps up the show expressing her excitement at how technology can continue to improve our world.Episode Links:AclimaGoogle Street ViewGoogle Earth Outreach

Whatever else the First Industrial Revolution may have been, it was an environmental calamity. As we now know, the practice of mining and burning fossil fuels on a massive scale was profoundly consequential for our planetary development. Does the Fourth Industrial Revolution give us the chance to reverse the damage we have done? Across the spectrum of environmentalist activity, there are engineers and innovators finding ways to employ new technologies to lessen our impact on ecosystems, from the startup using blockchain to drive sustainable buying decisions to the activist using satellites to bring environmental degraders to book. In episode 3 of ‘Shaping the Fourth Industrial Revolution’ we talk to John Amos, founder of Skytruth; Paul Bunje, Chief Scientist of the X-Prize Foundation; Jonathon Porritt, former Director of Friends of the Earth; Lauren Fletcher, founder and CEO of Biocarbon Engineering; Jessi Baker, Founder of Provenance; Kim Hunter, VP of Communications and Engagement at Aclima.
