DreamGirls Co-Founders Sharie Wilson and Tonya Thompson are on a mission to debunk the myth that black women *can't* have long, healthy hair and change the negative narrative around natural hair and instead, be champions for textured hair. Thompson and Wilson are professional hairstylists with over a decade of experience who are recognized for their reputation of having “magic hair-growing hands.” They've made it not only their expertise but passion to help black women's hair reach its greatest potential in both strength and length through the DreamGirls Healthy Hair Program and product line. Their journey began in 2001 when Sharie moved from her hometown, Los Angeles to Sacramento to pursue a job in corporate America, only to find herself returning home after long workdays to do what she truly loved...hair. Tonya has always had a passion for helping women gain confidence and feel beautiful by doing their hair and with an entrepreneurial spirit at a young age. She was the girl who did everyone's hair before school dances and even casually on the weekends. In 2006, Tonya's love for helping women feel beautiful through hair came full circle after Sharie presented her with a business venture of selling hair extensions. This quickly led to both sisters starting an apprenticeship to receive their cosmetology license and opening up the first DreamGirls salon which allowed them to get back to doing what they loved most- hair. The DreamGirls product line was released at the start of COVID-19 and helped provide hair care solutions to everyone at home who could no longer visit a salon. Since then, the product line expanded into curl and styling products as well as accessories for all hair types. DreamGirls products are color & straightener safe with UV protection and are infused with key ingredients that maintain and promote healthy hair growth such as Peppermint Oil, Pro Vitamin B5, Soybean Oil and Lavender while leaving out Parabens, Sulfates, and Sodium Chloride. Timestamps & Summary 2:59I was wondering if you could review some of the highlights for the audience to remind us of those key important areas.Dr. Bill WeissFor most minerals, what the committee tried to do is start at the cell. And we calculate, for example, how much mineral goes out and milk, how much mineral is free if an animal is growing, how much mineral is in that new tissue, and if she's pregnant, how much mineral is being deposited in the fetus, and we start there and we sum all that up. […]8:29What can you tell the audience today about the impact of mineral nutrition, whether positive or negative on the gut microbiome, and perhaps where some of the research should be focusing?Dr. Bill WeissBacteria need minerals, just like humans and cows need them. And we've known that for a long time so that the fact we have to feed the rumen bugs and the intestinal bugs in cows is well established. And in general, if you feed enough to the cow, the bacteria usually add enough and that's kind of where we left it. But more recently, there's been more and more studies looking at sources, not necessarily the amount of trace minerals but the source of the trace mineral. For example, organic versus sulfates or hydroxy versus sulfates, and so on. And some things we're finding at what I call the gross level is trace mineral affects fiber digestion, and fiber is digested only by bacteria so if you're altering fiber digestion, likely you're changing the room and population of bacteria. […]13:09What is a nutritionist should be looking for when looking to add chromium to a ruminant diet and the sources that they're utilizing?Dr. Bill WeissI don't know other countries' rules and regulations. But in the US, chromium propionate is the only one that's been approved. This is regulated by FDA because they're worried. I think they're most worried about environmental issues. But certain terms of chromium are also toxic. The form that we feed is not or not highly toxic. Other forms of chromium can actually be quite toxic. So, it's regulated in the US at point five milligrams per kilogram is the supplemental right. […]Chromium is one of these nutrients… We know cows need it. Because we can find proteins or substances within animals, not just cows, people, etc. that require chromium to work. But in the new NRC, which is now called NASEM, we don't give a recommendation for chromium. And people say: Well if it's an essential nutrient, why don't you do that? Well, part of the problem is no one's ever identified a chromium deficiency. A lot of cows are not fed supplemental chromium and they live very productive happy lives. So, it's if you can't produce a clinical deficiency, it's hard to say this is a requirement. Part of the problem is feeds have chromium. […] Measuring chromium in feeds is really hard. So, we have very poor data on actual chromium concentrations. […]18:50What are maybe three or four key take-home messages you'd like to leave the audience when they're thinking about mineral nutrition at the farm level that they need to consider?Dr. Bill WeissOne of the first things is, and I see a lot of diets and minerals are needed but too much is too much. And very often they're over-supplemented grossly in both minerals and vitamins. And this adds cost but these metals at some of these absurd levels are detrimental. […]The other thing is source does matter. As we do more and more stuff, the data is I think clearer on zinc than the other trace minerals that organic zinc or zinc from non sulfate sources, does things that zinc sulfate doesn't. […]So, look at everything: water, mineral composition, your basal diet, and make decisions on sources based on those things. But I guess the biggest thing is: be reasonable. And both feed enough but don't feed too much.

Heparan sulfates regulate axonal excitability and context generalization through Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.01.26.524131v1?rss=1 Authors: Song, I., Kuznetsova, T., Baidoe-Ansah, D., Mirzapourdelavar, H., Senkov, O., Hayani, H., Mironov, A., Kaushik, R., Druzin, M., Johansson, S., Dityatev, A. Abstract: Our previous studies demonstrated that enzymatic removal of highly sulfated heparan sulfates with heparinase 1 impaired axonal excitability and reduced expression of ankyrin G at the axon initial segments in the CA1 region of the hippocampus ex vivo, impaired context discrimination in vivo, and elevated Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) activity in vitro. Here, we show that in vivo delivery of heparinase 1 in the CA1 region of the hippocampus elevated autophosphorylation of CaMKII 24 hours after injection in mice. Patch-clamp recording in CA1 neurons revealed no significant heparinase effects on the amplitude or frequency of miniature excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic currents, while the threshold for action potential generation was increased and fewer spikes were generated in response to current injection. Delivery of heparinase on the next day after contextual fear conditioning induced context overgeneralization 24 hours after injection. Co-administration of heparinase with the CaMKII inhibitor (autocamtide-2-related inhibitory peptide) rescued neuronal excitability and expression of ankyrin G at the axon initial segment. It also restored context discrimination, suggesting a key role of CaMKII in neuronal signaling downstream of heparan sulfate proteoglycans and highlighting a link between impaired CA1 pyramidal cell excitability and context generalization during recall of contextual memories. What are my thoughts on sulfates being in the BC brand spf and is this something to worry about? What are the perceived benefits of dating younger for hormone support? What are my predictions with biohacking, microchipping and much more!I would love to share with you my quick and easy preview of my Top 5 Mature Fall Skin Tips for Glassy and Hydrated Skin that I expand upon in yesterday's show!Customize your shifting hydration needs by having a lighter moisturizer on hand for lighter daily needs, and one that is a little more hydrating to use after your dermarolling and retinol which can create a little redness, dryness and requires extra recovery support for optimal outcomes with my more advanced and mature skin protocols.Cleanse and exfoliate the skin regularly to reduce oxidative stressors from accumulating in the stratum corneum layer of the skin.Optimize your at-home skin care and dermarolling routines, incorporate skin actives like vitamin c and vitamin a, take hair, skin and nail supplements (always make sure they're third party independent lab tested!), and use non-toxic hair growth stimulating shampoo, conditioners, scalp care and styling products. Shop my Fall Skin Essentials here!Plan and optimize your fall skin rejuvenation journey to address things like hyper/hypopigmentation, redness, sun damage, fine lines, large pores and stimulating more collagen which may involve laser skin rejuvenation and other non-surgical interventions depending on your skin goals, budget, lifestyle and desires.Continue to biohack your air, water, lighting, EMF's and perform regular detoxification with systemic cleanses like the Purium Lifestyle Cleanse (that I am literally drinking now!) to remain as pure as possible.Bonus tips for keeping stress down (which depletes key nutrients) and keeping your essential nutrients up!By supporting your adrenals and immune system you support the ability of your body to remove excess melanin, keratin and other cellular fragments that precipitate as rough, dry and raised skin patches and sun/age spots. Shop my Adrenal and Stress Stack here with a few extra self care goodies! My husband and I start everyday with purified water, greens and superfoods to give my body potent adaptogens and hydrating nutrients to support healthy cellular function, support my mitochondria and keep my energy levels up with the delicious Organifi superfood juice powders that are a fraction of the cost and hassle of fresh juices and won't break our fast with under 30 calories per serving! I am nothing short of obsessed with Organifi products and have been taking them routinely now for 3 months and love my skin and energy results.

I'm coming at you with a solo episode and talking about three major headlines in the beauty industry right now. First off, John Demsey, executive vice president of The Estée Lauder Companies, was recently fired after posting an incredibly racist meme on Instagram. Racism is alive and well in the beauty industry, but what does it mean for buying patterns and brand loyalty? I also talk about L'Oreal's latest lawsuit, which claims the company is causing American shoppers to overpay for its beauty products by misleading them into thinking they're actually made in France. I round out the episode by discussing The Ordinary's new marketing campaign for their shampoo with sulfates, and explain why I'm personally anti-sulfate. These new stories have brought up a lot of questions and thoughts that I have about consumer responsibility and the future of beauty marketing, so let's get into it.  In this episode, I dive into: The range of reactions to John Demsey's Instagram post and lackluster apology  How L'Oreal's lawsuit could redefine how people brand beauty products  Sulfates trending in hair care again and why Some background on what sulfates are and how they affect beauty products  Cognitive dissonance in the beauty community  RESOURCES & PRODUCTS MENTIONED https://www.wsj.com/articles/estee-lauder-fires-executive-john-demsey-11646057171 (Estée Lauder Fires Executive John Demsey Over Instagram Post)  https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/us-lawsuit-claims-loreal-makes-up-products-appear-being-france-2022-02-18/ (U.S. lawsuit claims L'Oreal makes up products to appear being from France)  https://www.beautyindependent.com/sulfates-haircare/ (Should Sulfates Make A Comeback In Haircare?)  FOLLOW IZZY Instagram: https://instagram.com/izzysapien?utm_medium=copy_link (@izzysapien) Website: https://thingofbeautypodcast.com (thingofbeautypodcast.com)

You can find glyphosate on nearly 100 non-GMO food crops, including vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, and cereals like wheat and oats. You can find it in wine, beer, ice cream, and pretty much everything else. Also, you wouldn't imagine in a whole host of ingredients, such as corn starch, beet and cane sugar, and even honey! Glyphosate interrupts the body's ability to turn natural sulfites from food into sulfates that the body needs to detox and stay healthy. High sulfate levels heal the gut while supporting the absorption of many vital nutrients. Sulfates assist in clear brain fog and improve memory through increased blood flow. Some suggested things to detox are drink and bathe in purified, start organic food from trusted sources, and if you can, grow your organic fruits, veggies, and herbs – it's easier than you think! Detox the liver and kidneys - these help the body eliminate glyphosate through urine. Also, focus on having two to three bowel movements every day. It might sound hard to achieve, but it will be smooth when you start changing your diet! Eliminating toxins through the bowels is key to detox. ===================================== Subscribe on I-Tunes: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com/itunes Review us at: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com/itunes Visit us at: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com Have a question: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com/question

00:00 - Intro01:33 - We're in an muriatic acid shortage. Thanks, COVID.02:21 - Two specialty acids: modified Muriatic Acids for less fuming: AcidBlue and AcidMagic. 03:06 - Muriatic acid is a diluted form of Hydrochloric acid (HCl). It is 31.45% HCl or less.04:14 - Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is sold in 38.5% concentration. It is comparable in dosing to standard 31.45% HCl. It takes just 2% more sulfuric acid to equal muriatic by volume.09:36 - Sodium bisulfate (NaHSO4) is sold in 93.2% concentration. It is also known as "dry acid", or in pool retail stores, "pH down" or "alkalinity down". It is safer to handle than liquid acid, but needs to be pre-dissolved before adding to the pool.11:48 - Let's talk about sulfates (SO4--) or (SO3--).12:05 - One gallon of 38.5% sulfuric acid leaves behind 47.1 ppm of sulfates in 10,000 gallons.13:19 - One pound of 93.2% of sodium bisulfate leaves behind 9.6 ppm of sulfates in 10,000 gallons, plus salt.14:58 - even in perfectly LSI-balanced water, if you have high enough sulfates, you can still have etching of cement. The sulfate ion (SO3--) can become the dominant ion and kicks carbonate off of calcium (Ca++) and create calcium sulfate.  Enough calcium sulfate can precipitate a sharp crystalline scale.18:08 - The only way to reduce sulfates is to drain and dilute.  Unless you have Reverse Osmosis (R.O.) available. If you're going to use sulfuric or sodium bisulfate, you must regularly schedule dilutions to avoid sulfate problems.19:53 - Sulfates and metals can combine to create that infamous 'rotten egg' smell. We think of it as sulfur, but it's usually iron sulfate or some variant.21:08 - The third alternative for pH reduction is injecting carbon dioxide (CO2). It reduces pH but does not reduce alkalinity. In fact, alkalinity tends to rise due to excess lye from chlorine.22:18 - Acid only introduces more CO2 (to reduce pH) is to burn through alkalinity and convert it into carbonic acid.  And Joe thought I was asking a trick question. There is no CO2 in acid.24:39 - One pound of CO2 is equivalent to 32.8 fl.oz. of standard Muriatic Acid for pH correction.27:08 - Summary------------------------------------Connect with Orenda TechnologiesWebsite: https://www.orendatech.comBlog: https://blog.orendatech.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/OrendaTechnologiesFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/orendatech/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/orendatechnologies/

Advertising will have us believe that hair isn’t attractive unless it’s smooth and silky. And you can’t get smooth and silky hair unless you use products packed with harmful toxins. Not true! You can use conditioner on your hair. You just need to know what to look out for. Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™.  This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health and the health of the environment around us. I've spent most of my adult life obsessively researching these "conveniences." On every show, I pick one topic, and we dive into it. My goal is to make you more aware of these traps so that you can push back on them. Remember, it starts with you and the choices you make. So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you. You can get silky smooth hair without sacrificing your health. Did you know that the FDA does not require companies to provide the exact ingredients in their shampoos or conditioners? The FD&C Act allows companies to release beauty products onto the market without reviewing its ingredients. Nobody is looking into this stuff, guys. They can get away with throwing in all sorts of harmful chemicals into these bottles of product and no one is aware. Parabens, sulfates, chemical fragrances- they’re all in there. And they’re wreaking havoc on your body’s delicate systems. I don’t use shampoos and conditioners daily, but I do use them. I have longer hair and I like it to look nice. So, yes, I use conditioner. But I’m aware of the dangerous toxins that some companies sneak into their products. I’m here to educate you so you can be aware also. Then you can seek out responsible, compassionate companies that use real natural botanicals and ingredients instead of chemicals. Other great info in this segment: The scary effects of the toxins found in hair products The buzz words to look for on packaging that don’t mean what they claim The gross truth of urea in hair care products The conditioner ingredient that actually dries out your hair The myth that you have to wash your hair daily What to use instead Links & Resources: Listen to my Fatal Conveniences™ segment on Shampoos Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) Chemicals in Shampoos May Cause Health Risks What are Sulfates? This episode is all about oxalate.  I interviewed Susan Owens who is one of the leading researchers into oxalate and their deleterious influence on health. Oxalate is found in many "healthy" foods like leafy greens, nuts, and beets.  The body makes them naturally and can function fine with a low balance.   However, many people are told to eat these healthy foods that are high in oxalate as a part of a healthy diet and are experiencing many negative side effects.  In this discussion, Susan explains everything you need to know about oxalates, why they matter, and what they are doing to your body and brain. Be sure to check out Susan's Facebook group "Trying Low Oxalate" for the most comprehensive, researched-based oxalate education online.  Remember to Subscribe

This week we dive into the murky ingredients in your skincare products. Many of these are hormone disrupters and known carcinogens. Since our skin is our largest organ and we're all about limiting toxicity in our lives this episode was a MUST. Tune in this week to learn how to be a savvy skincare shopper!   Featured Product Clean Sourced Collagens Features five collagen types from four different sources! Contains eight grams of protein per serving Help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles Helps ease joint stiffness and discomfort Formulated with vitamin C, horsetail extract, and zinc for maximum absorption Odorless, flavorless formula easily mixes into water, juice, or smoothies   * * *   Why Skincare Impacts Your Health Skin is the biggest organ on your body. Skin absorbs everything that we put on it. Skincare is one of the most lucrative industries in the world.   “Fake Skincare” In March of 2019, the Environmental Working Group, the EWG, reported that US regulation of chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics is falling behind the rest of the world. More than 40 nations, ranging from major industrialized economies like the United Kingdom and Germany, to developing states like Cambodia and Vietnam, have enacted regulations specifically targeting the safety and ingredients of cosmetics and personal care products. Some of these nations have restricted or completely banned more than 1,400 chemicals from cosmetic products. By contrast, the US Food and Drug Administration has banned or restricted only 9 chemicals for safety reasons. This is one of the most under-regulated industries but one of the most lucrative industries in the United States.   Why Do Regulations Matter? The Environmental Working Group (EWG) They curate the Skin Deep database of ingredients used in personal care products and their safety concerns on human health. Biggest advocates for clean ingredients in your products. If your skincare product is backed by the EWG, it means they’ve done their homework, they’ve taken the time to look at clean ingredients. The EWG has a scale that rates products from 1 to 5 as far as cleanliness and safety.     Top 12 Ingredients to Avoid & Why – The First 6! Ingredient: PHTHALATES (DIBUTYL PHTHALATE) Typically Found In: nail polish and other nail products, perfume, makeup remover, hairspray, deodorant Why You Should Avoid: Phthalates are sneaky endocrine disruptors, which means they mimic the body’s hormones, therefore throwing the entire endocrine system off balance. They cause both hormonal and neurological damage, and in the case of pregnant women, may also cause major birth defects. The worst part? You will rarely find the word “phthalates” on a label. Some products do market themselves as phthalate-free, but what about the other slew of synthetics on our department store’s beauty shelf? You can identify phthalates by their abbreviated chemical components: DBP (di-n-butyl phthalate), DEP (diethyl phthalate), DMP (dimethyl phthalate), DEHP (di-2-ethylhexyl), and BzBP (benzylbutyl phthalate).   Ingredient: SULPHATES (SODIUM LAURATE, LAURYL SULPHATE OR SLS) Typically Found In: Primarily used as a foaming agent or detergent to be found in shampoos, facial cleansers, mouthwash, toothpaste, bubble bath products, household and utensil cleaning detergents. Why You Should Avoid: Depending on the manufacturing process, Sodium laureth sulfate may be contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. Both contaminants may cause cancer. Also, ethylene oxide may harm the nervous system and interfere with human development, and 1,4-dioxane is persistent. In other words, it doesn’t easily degrade and can remain in the environment long after it is rinsed down the shower drain. SLS has been shown to cause or contribute to: skin irritation, canker sores, disruptions of skin’s natural oil balance and eye damage. It is also widely believed to be a major contributor to acne (especially cystic acne) around the mouth and chin.   Ingredient: PARABENS (METHYL-, ETHYL-, PROPYL-, BUTYL-, ISOBUTYL-) Typically Found In: A common and very cheap cosmetic preservative, the second most common skincare ingredient. Found in: makeup, moisturizer, shaving gel, shampoo, personal lubricant and spray tan products Why You Should Avoid: Synthetic parabens are toxic in large or cumulative quantities, as the body stores parabens in many tissue types. They can cause allergic reactions, skin rashes and irritation. Parabens have been shown to mimic estrogen which disrupts normal hormone function. Exposure to external estrogen’s have been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer and increase cell abnormalities. There should be no excuse for your skincare products to still have Parabens. The FDA acknowledges several studies linking parabens, which mimic estrogen, to breast cancer, skin cancer and decreased sperm count, but has not ruled that it is harmful. According to the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Products, longer chain parabens like propyl and butyl paraben and their branched counterparts, isopropyl and isobutylparabens, may disrupt the endocrine system and cause reproductive and developmental disorders. Look for ingredients with the suffix “-paraben” as well—paraben-free products will be labeled as such.   Ingredient: FORMALDEHYDE Typically Found In: These are primarily preservatives commonly found in cosmetics. It is also found in baby bath soap, nail polish, eyelash adhesive and hair dyes. Look for: DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine, quaternium-15, and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate. These ingredients slowly and continuously release small amounts of formaldehyde. Why You Should Avoid: Short-term health impacts include irritation to the eyes, nose and throat, and many studies show it causes allergic skin reactions and skin rashes. In fact, it was awarded 2105 Contact Allergen of the Year by American Contact Dermatitis Society. Long term, Formaldehyde has a long list of adverse health effects, including immune-system toxicity, respiratory irritation and cancer in humans. Formaldehyde is a recognized human carcinogen.   Ingredient: BHA AND BHT (BUTYLATED HYDROXYANISOLE AND BUTYLATED HYDROXYTOLUENE) Typically Found In: Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) are closely related chemicals – preservatives commonly used in cosmetics, personal care products (mainly shampoos, perfumes, deodorants, body lotions), and even food and food packaging. Why You Should Avoid: The National Toxicology Program classifies butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” It can cause skin depigmentation. In animal studies, BHA produces liver damage and causes stomach cancers such as papillomas and carcinomas and interferes with normal reproductive system development and thyroid hormone levels. The European Union considers it unsafe in fragrance. Opt for a BHA and phthalate-free perfume.   Ingredient: COAL-TAR DYES  Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of chemicals that occur naturally in coal, crude oil and gasoline. Typically Found In: Found in: hair dyes, lipstick, cosmetic, shampoo Why You Should Avoid: Phenylenediamine, used in hair dyes, has been found to be carcinogenic in laboratory tests conducted by the U.S. National Cancer Institute and National Toxicology Program. Coal tar is recognized as a human carcinogen and the main concern are their potential as carcinogens. As well, colors may be contaminated with low levels of heavy metals and some contain aluminum (a neurotoxin). This is of particular concern when used in cosmetics that may be ingested, like lipstick.   * * *   Deeper Dive Resources   The Environmental Working Group https://www.ewg.org/   EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/   Global Regulatory Lists of Banned or Restricted Cosmetic Ingredients and Positive Lists https://www.chemsafetypro.com/Topics/Cosmetics/Regulatory_Lists_of_Cosmetic_Ingredients_Banned_Cosmetic_Ingredients,_Restricted_Cosmetic_Ingredients_and_Positive_Lists.html   Prohibited & Restricted Ingredients in Cosmetics (FDA) https://www.fda.gov/cosmetics/cosmetics-laws-regulations/prohibited-restricted-ingredients-cosmetics   Phthalates https://www.cdc.gov/biomonitoring/Phthalates_FactSheet.html   Sulfates https://www.healthline.com/health/beauty-skin-care/sulfates   Parabens https://www.fda.gov/cosmetics/cosmetic-ingredients/parabens-cosmetics   Formaldehyde https://www.ewg.org/research/exposing-cosmetics-cover/formaldehyde-releasers   Formaldehyde: 2015 Contact Allergen of the Year https://journals.lww.com/dermatitis/Fulltext/2015/01000/Formaldehyde.2.aspx   BHA/BHT https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/700741/BHT/   BHA/BHT (National Toxicology Program) https://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/roc/content/profiles/butylatedhydroxyanisole.pdf   Coal Tar Dyes http://www.safecosmetics.org/get-the-facts/chemicals-of-concern/coal-tar/   Coal Tar Dyes (National Cancer Institute) https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/substances/coal-tar   Coal Tar Dyes (National Toxicology Program) https://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/roc/content/profiles/coaltars.pdf

There is a consumer trend to avoid additives in hair care products and consider natural alternatives. Dr. Lynn McKinley-Grant, president of the Skin of Color Society, talks with Dr. Amy McMichael about shampoo ingredients and the importance of cleansing the scalp in the skin of color population. Dr. McMichael also discusses how hairstyling practices in this population can lead to hair loss and damage to the hair shaft. “We just have to be more healthy in our choices of how we do those styles and how we cleanse our scalp and our hair when we’re wearing those styles,” advises Dr. McMichael. We bring you the latest in dermatology news and research: 1. Psoriasis registry data provide evidence that adalimumab reduces mortality 2. Tape strips useful to identify biomarkers in skin of young children with atopic dermatitis 3. Short-term statin use linked to risk of skin and soft tissue infections *  *  *   Things you will learn in this episode: Do patients need to avoid shampoos containing sulfates and parabens? “Sulfates are just one of the many ways that we can cleanse the scalp and the hair. It is a detergent, and when that detergent is removed, in order to cleanse the hair another detergent has to be put into its place,” explains Dr. McMichael There are "no data to suggest that these other detergents are better or safer or even helpful for our hair shaft.” Only patients with a true allergic contact sensitization to parabens need to avoid products with this ingredient. Patients need to understand that the “no-poo” method and dry shampoos are not cleansing the scalp. “There’s an idea that you can shampoo as infrequently as you want,” says Dr. McMichael. “That’s really not true. In order for your scalp to be healthy and to grow healthy hair, you need to have it cleansed. And once weekly is preferred but certainly every 2 weeks is reasonable.” Patients may rinse their hair with water and baking soda, apple cider vinegar, and tea tree oil without knowing how they interact with the bacterial and yeast components on the scalp. “And they can be bad for the hair shaft,” Dr. McMichael adds. Conditioners are not a good replacement for shampoo, especially for patients with a scalp condition. “Conditioners alone are not meant to cleanse,” Dr. McMichael explains. For women of African descent, consider dandruff shampoo products that are manufactured and tested for this patient population. Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) is the most prominent form of hair loss in the United States in women of African descent. Clinicians should help patients with or who are at risk for CCCA to minimize traction, tension, and trauma to the scalp caused by some hair care practices. In a recent study of more than 5,000 patients, CCCA seems to have an association with type 2 diabetes mellitus. “As we move forward, we need to start thinking about the whole patient,” Dr. McMichael advises. “It’s not just the scalp that we’re dealing with. It’s not just the hairstyle. But what is the health and underlying metabolism issue of some of these patients and can we as dermatologists be helpful in getting them to better health.” Dermatologists in residency need more training in hair care practices of patients with skin of color that encompasses the wide cultural differences in hairstyling methods and scalp conditions across different populations.   Host: Lynn McKinley-Grant, MD (Howard University, Washington) Guest: Amy McMichael, MD (Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, N.C.) This episode looks at sulfates and their role in haircare, specifically shampoos. Sulfates act as a foaming agent that cleanses away impurities on our hair shaft and scalp, but in the past few years, they have gained a bad rap in the beauty industry for their habit to strip away good oils and color. We sat down with Lorean Cairns, Co-founder and Creative Director of Fox & Jane Salons to hear her experience with sulfates as a salon owner and experienced hair stylist.
