Welcome to the Faery Whispering Podcast! Hello, I'm Claire CaselyIn this two part episode hear an inspiring ‘David and Goliath story of how villagers of Teigngrace, in Devon, and environmental protestors joined forces in July 1997 to save their local landscape, wildlife and way of life from destruction by a large mineral company.  It was called the ‘Two Rivers Campaign'.  These events led to the villagers and campaigners to forge strong friendships and change their outlooks in many ways.  They decided to twin Teigngrace with the faeries of rivers, trees and valleys (Naiads, Dryads and Napaeiads).  This is what first peaked my interest and led me on a journey to talk with those people involved.  This is my homage to these kind and brave folk and a landscape that is dear to my heart.I'm thankful to Joy, Walter and Ivan for sharing their stories.  Also my thanks to singer-songwriter Nicky Swann for allowing me to use her track ‘A Piece of Me' from her album ‘How Does Your Land Lie?' which is her homage to Newton Abbot.  When I first heard the track I knew it would be perfect for this story!  Music | Nicky Swann (bandcamp.com)See my website for show notes and photos for this episode and other episodes. www.faerywhisperer.co.ukIf you enjoy this episode please share with friends and consider joining my Faery Whisperer community on Patreon which helps to support the creation of this podcast.  Thank you!See you next time and remember to listen for the whispers from your heart ❤️and be the change… Love Claire ❤️  Support the Podcast on my Faery Whisperer Buy Me A Coffee Page See Show Notes on my podcast blog www.twitter.com/FaeryWhispering Faery Whispering Facebook group The Faery Whisperer YouTube Channel

Castle Freak (1995) Castle Freak is a 1995 American direct-to-video horror film directed by Stuart Gordon. The film stars Jeffrey Combs as John Reilly, an American recovering alcoholic who inherits an Italian castle when a distant relative passes away. John travels to Italy with his estranged wife Susan (Barbara Crampton) and blind daughter Rebecca (Jessica Dollarhide). The three plan to stay at the castle, but unbeknownst to them, a freakish monster locked away in the basement of the castle is about to escape and commit a series of murders. The police place John as the prime suspect, leading him to confront his alcoholism, fight the demon and prove himself innocent. Castle Freak went into production in 1994 after Gordon noticed art for the film in producer Charles Band's office. Gordon agreed to develop the film on Band's condition that the film take place in a castle, contain a freak, and would be shot on a very low budget. Gordon obliged as he would be able to cast who he wanted in the film and would get the final cut. The film was shot in 1994 in a castle owned by Band in Italy, where Gordon had previously shot The Pit and the Pendulum.   Castle Freak (2020)   Castle Freak is a 2020 American direct-to-video horror film that was directed by Tate Steinsiek. It has been billed as a reboot of the 1995 Stuart Gordon film by the same name, which is a loose adaptation of the stories "The Outsider" and "The Dunwich Horror" by H.P. On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined for the eighth and final part of a conversation by returning guests Andrew Batt and Rebecca Wheele to interview Paul and his friend Gary Clarke (a.k.a. Boatsy) about who they are, including mastering the game of life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Paul: My troubles were deeply rooted psychological issues, alcohol addiction etc and Gary's were behind identity and being in the Casual scene. My advice to somebody like a younger me would be, whatever it is, learn to let it go. And you might say it's alright for me to say, but having it as a focal point in our lives that we can let things go, in doing so we release that negative toxic energy that entraps and enslaves us, brings us down, depresses us, etc. The older you get, the more mature and wiser you get. You start off on the wrong path, but there's always light at the end of the tunnel. Life's a rollercoaster and you have to stick with it. Things can send you backwards sometimes, you could have a death in the family, you might lose your job or have no money, but there's always good out there as well. Just keep right on ‘til the end of the road. It may not happen overnight, but make sure you're surrounded by good people and look for help. Looking after our mental health is a lot better these days, nobody spoke about mental health in our day, but it's out there now. My company does a lot of mental health tutoring and has mental health days. Reach out. I woke up and smelled the coffee, I was letting people down, my family and friends. You only get so many chances in life, and if you carry on down the path that I took, eventually you're going to run out of friends, your family will turn their back on you, you could end up in prison, you've got to get a grip on it one day. BEST MOMENTS ‘We might be 3-0 down at half time, metaphorically, but there's always the second half to play for.'‘If our younger days, as a man, looking for help was seen as a sign of weakness. That conditioning is nonsense, the real men in life do cry and they're not afraid to show that vulnerability, and that's strength.'‘When the chips were down I (Paul) had no one to turn to, which created a self-fulfilling prophecy as the deeper I got down the more I had to dig in. What I was doing was digging a deeper and deeper hole for myself and I couldn't get out of it.'‘Fit in with yourself first, not to anyone else. Some people will resonate with you and some don't and that's fine. If you can count on one hand the people that are in the trenches with you when it actually matters, you are very fortunate.'  VALUABLE RESOURCES Paul's Story: Emerging From The Forest (UK): https://www.amazon.co.uk/Emerging-Forest-Pain-Purpose-Mastering/dp/1719373272 Paul's Story: Emerging From The Forest (USA): https://www.amazon.com/Emerging-Forest-Pain-Purpose-Mastering/dp/1719373272 Mastering The Game Of Life Book (UK): https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mastering-Game-Life-Paul-Lowe/dp/1782227679 Mastering The Game Of Life Book (USA): https://www.amazon.com/Mastering-Game-Life-Paul-Lowe/dp/1782227679 Speaking From Our Hearts Books: Volumes 1-3 (Available on Amazon) World Game-Changers Group ABOUT THE GUESTS Andrew Batt is a business expert and property specialist with a passion for helping others. Initially, the series adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before it began adapting films. These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences. The series became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s. On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined for the seventh part of a conversation by returning guest Jason Kehoe to interview Paul and his friend Gary Clarke (a.k.a. Boatsy) about who they are, including changing the beautiful game and what that means. KEY TAKEAWAYS There's a lot of money in the game now and a lot of the players are spoiled, they're not really connected to the fans anymore, not like the old days when the Nottingham Forest players used to take the train with the fans and mix. I've never met such a good group of guys, they were humble, they'd speak to anyone and take photos. These modern day footballers, I find that a lot of them are up their own arses – not all of them.  The money has gotten a bit silly, but then again, it's made it a better spectator sport. With all-seater stadiums you can take your family and you know you're safe. So, in that respect, it's gotten better. We couldn't carry on the way it was in the 80's. The football in the 70s and early 80s was fantastic, I loved watching some of those players, but it's had to change, and it's changed for the better. The euphoria of your team winning gives you such a high, but what I learned – and I gave all my power away, as a teenager to Nottingham Forest – was that you have a team in red and a team in blue. One of them wins 1-0. Imagine there's 100,000 people in the crowd, 50,000 red and 50,000 blue, half of them will be absolutely elated because their team has one, the other half will be absolutely devastated because their team has lost. The result is the result, it's 1-0, the only power it has is the power we choose to give it. It's just a game. That was a powerful lesson for me. This is something you can apply to life in general. Dedication and determination in all aspects is important to becoming a star player in either the beautiful game or life, it's a mindset, you can't go after it half-heartedly. It's almost cliché, but it's true – but, if you dig below the surface of what's really needed, those traits  of respect, trust, honesty. This is why I've turned my back on the modern game because money has spoiled it and players dive and cheat trying to get other players sent off. I find it disgusting. What happened to the trust, the mutual respect of a fellow pro? Why do you want to dive around as if you've just been shot and try to con the referee? BEST MOMENTS ‘No one will ever repeat what Forest did: Gaining promotion and then winning the European Cup back-to-back.' ‘I could remember every FA Cup winner from 1968-2000 but I can't anymore, I've lost interest in it.'‘Don't get too high when you win or low when you lose.' ‘We'll pick ourselves up and dust ourselves down and we will wait another four years and we'll cheer England on, and hopefully it's not too long. If I knew that, when I passed on, my son was to witness it, I'd accept that… not that I'd know a lot about it!' On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined for the sixth part of a conversation by first time guest Darryl Claypole to interview Paul and his friend Gary Clarke (a.k.a. Boatsy) about who they are, and how football has played a role in their lives.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Grass roots football is about taking part and enjoying it and playing with your mates. Some parents are too over the top with their kids and take it a bit too seriously, shouting at the referee and the manager, I don't believe in that, it's a bit out of order, they can frighten some kids off from wanting to be a referee – because some of them are as young as the kids playing and are still learning the game as well. The earlier you can let kids express themselves through whatever medium, whether it's painting, sport, whatever aspect it is, just give them the ball and let them play. Now more than ever, in society, there's that many expectations with social media and peer pressure to do this and that. Sport – and football particularly – teaches you about the philosophy of life and teaches discipline and respect.  It's incredibly important that charities like World Game-Changers put money into grass roots football, it needs money for the development of the kids. It's every parents' dream – and it's the kids' dream as well – to play professional football, they want their kids to do well. But, you can make a good living playing part time grass roots football as well as having a job, some players are earning £1000 a week. You can talk about the beautiful game of football, for me there's an even bigger game: The game of life, and there's a lot of common skills and attributes that we can take forward from one to the other. BEST MOMENTS ‘Football's been my whole life from as long back as I can remember to now getting involved with grass roots football and watching my lad play on Sunday mornings.' ‘I'm a massive lover in life, and particularly in football, of the style and philosophy that Pele was brought up with all those years ago: There's the ball, let the children play.' ‘We're in this together, from the chairman to the tea lady.' ‘We send them out the door far better young men than when they came through the door.' On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined for the fifth part of a conversation by returning guest Rebecca Wheele to interview Paul and his friend Gary Clarke (a.k.a. Boatsy) about who they are, including a feminine perspective around football KEY TAKEAWAYS 70s football was more of a male-oriented sport, it was very rare you saw women and families at a match, that only came about with the birth of the Premiere League in the mid-90s. In the 70s it was every man for himself, especially at away games where you had to fight your way to and from the station. It's not right, but it was survival of the fittest. In the 80s it escalated until Thatcher's government turned it round with bans, all-seater stadiums and cameras. In the 60s it was: Do as you're told, speak when you're spoken to, know your place, you're only a child. That was changing, certainly in the 70s with punk rock and the rebelliousness of the teens in Britain, we were saying “we're not going to suppress any more, we have a voice, we want to be heard”. Punk rock spoke to that and it was played out particularly in football. I got peer-pressured into joining the Forest Boys. I got attacked by them in Nottingham city centre and every week afterwards I seemed to bump into them in the city. They were a great bunch of lads, and they invited me to go to away games with them and I did. To be honest with you, the first day I had out with them at Arsenal was a great day out, even though we all got arrested. But once you get into it, it's like a drug, it's very hard to get out of it. I'd just got together with a class a few years ago and things were starting to get serious after about three months. My idea of humour was to say to her: “I haven't been completely truthful with you, I really don't know how to tell you this ‘cause it'll break your heart, you're sharing me with somebody else”. She gave me a load of expletives and said she didn't think I was like that. Then she wanted to know her name. I said: “I can't tell you what her name is”. I got a slap, which was fair, but I burst out laughing and I was told I was disgusting. Then I told her it was Nottingham Forest Football Club and we both fell about laughing. Rebecca: I think I'd feel quite cross if someone did that to me. BEST MOMENTS ‘As a woman, and someone who hasn't experienced violence or gang/hooligan culture, what drives you to get in a fight?' ‘I got beaten up at Southampton at the age of 15, I wasn't a hooligan, I was a normal schoolboy!' ‘I wish I was at home having coffee and crumpets with my girlfriend rather than getting beaten up in the rain!' ‘The gang lifestyle ended my first marriage, at the time you needed five points of unreasonable behaviour to get a divorces and Nottingham Forest was mentioned three times!' On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined for the fourth part of a conversation by first time guest Mick Garton to interview Paul and his friend Gary Clarke (a.k.a. Boatsy) about who they are, including being torn between two lovers: Nottingham Forest and Carlton Town Football Clubs. KEY TAKEAWAYS I (Paul) met Mick about 20 years ago at an event, we got on and arranged to meet up and talk business over a coffee and a piece of cake. Obviously there was a love of Nottingham Forest that brought us together, but I loved and respected what you were doing with Carlton Town. Later that year we did the Brian Clough Tribute Dinner. We kept in touch and I helped Carlton Town with some sponsorship. I (Mick) knew Gary by reputation, I'd read your book, but the first time I met you was when you came to a Carlton Town event and you introduced yourself and very kindly donated some stuff for the auction. That pattern continued for more events, including buying us all shots at the end of the night! When you really got involved was during Covid when you couldn't watch your beloved Forest and the only game you come go and see was Carlton Town, so you came down to watch us and I remember you coming up to me saying: “Bloody hell, this is good, I've never been into non-league”. From then on it got to the stage where you were at pretty much every game and it built from there. I (Gary) met Paul at one of your events just before Covid and I bought a couple of his books because I was intrigued by him and I wanted to know a bit more about him. Paul  introduced himself and gave me his card, kept in touch and invited me on one of his podcasts for his World Game-Changers charity that he'd just set up and invited me to get involved with. Then Mick suggested a charity football match between WGC and Carlton Town as Covid was coming to an end. It was an overwhelming success and we raised more money than in our wildest dreams. I (Gary) get the sponsors in at Carlton now so I feel – if both Carlton and Forest are at home – I'm obligated to meet the sponsors. It wouldn't look very good if I was at Forest when these people are coming to meet me and watch a game under my hospitality. It's a no-brainer for me because I like going to Carlton and I like non-league football these days. I've been bitten by the bug. It's a shame though because my son likes to go and see Forest, especially now they've been promoted to the Premier League, but I'm lucky because his Godfather tends to take him in my place. I'm pretty lucky really that I can do what I need to do. BEST MOMENTS ‘Gary seemed to be, although he had a past, somebody who just wanted to do good and help people. To this day, that's the overwhelming thing that comes across to me, you'll go out of your way to help people.'‘Like attracts like, you resonate with people that you know you are just going to just rub along with.'‘I've got more clubs than Jack Nicklaus!'‘My love of Carlton is for the unsung heroes – and there are a lot of them – and what they do for the benefit of the local community and particularly the younger people.' Dear Rob was the grand inquisitor and dear Kyle, mon cherie, was the grand inquisitee - if that is even a word, which I hope it isn't. Questions came from long-time listener Paul from Hong Kong via Stamullen as well the the late James Lipton from his Inside The Actor's Studio tv show from some years ago. He didn't come from beyond the grave - that would have been fucking legendary. While recording this episode, the two lads enjoyed some delicious beers from Crafty Bear brewing and check that out via https://www.craftybearbrewing.com - Rob recommends the Belgian Blonde if possible, but try any of them if you can. On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined for the third part of a conversation by first time guest Mick Garton to interview Paul and his friend Gary Clarke (a.k.a. Boatsy) about who they are, including their love of Nottingham Forest FC. KEY TAKEAWAYS Because of what I was going through in my childhood I was looking for some kind of emotional reassurance, because my world was chaotic and violent, I loved the gentleness of David Cassidy's music – though you weren't allowed to admit to liking him, as a guy – I found it very soothing and still do to this day. It's funny how music triggers the mind. Whenever I'm in a tube station in London I think of Gary because his favourite band is The Jam. My first suicide attempt as a kid of 13 and a half was on the back of Forest losing 1-0 to Newcastle in a replay on the Thursday night and two days later losing 2-0 to Fulham away. That was it, my world was shattered, I couldn't cope any more. Those two games basically broke my heart. The reason I share this is because of the power of a belief system that we get in our minds. Forest was my world and I can remember at the time being physically sick, my Mum was crying because she knew what it meant to me.  I didn't have the latest designed tracksuit because ADIDAS was the thing to have. If everybody had ADIDAS, I had to have something different because I was never ever part of a crowd. I've always been a loner, being labelled miserable, anti-social, even when I used to get into scrapes, I always operated solo. I liked to have the best of everything, but it was very traditional, which reflected my taste in music. By the 80s I was out of football, my head was well and truly screwed from my childhood, and my drinking was out of control, I'd lost my marriage. I vowed that one day I'd return and kill the guy that was responsible for that and all the misery he'd inflicted on me and my mother, more so my mother. I'd given up and just wanted to die. Football was not on the radar. BEST MOMENTS ‘I used to sneak the transistor radio up to bed with me so I could listen to the games, and when I heard my Dad come up the stairs I'd quickly turn it off and put it under my pillow and pretend to be asleep.'‘Your interests do change as you get older, which helps as someone who DJs.'‘Someone said to me once: “You've got a really polished voice” and I said: “That's because I used to drink Brass-O.” I actually used to drink metal polisher with some milk in it for a hit because it's almost pure alcohol. It used to knock your head off, but it gave you a hit.' ‘I lived in the past, because my childhood was so violent and so erratic I was looking for some kind of emotional security, and I found that in trips down memory lane. I clung to things like Frank Sinatra, Karen Carpenter and even my love for Forest in the 70s, I still talk about Franny Lee, Roy McFarland, the old school. I'm still, to a certain degree, not stuck in the past, but appreciative of that culture of when people stood for real values.' On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined for the second part of a conversation by returning guest Keith Amoss to interview Paul and his friend Gary Clarke (aka Boatsy) about who they are. KEY TAKEAWAYS Paul and Gary had similar paths growing up in poor families in inner-city Nottingham with mixed fortunes and adventures in their youths. Now they're writing a book about changing their lives round from growing up in the wrong side of the tracks to coming out the other side. They decided to name the book Angels With Dirty Faces after the iconic James Cagney film of the same name because when you go back to that iconic film that is a tale of morality underpinning it. Gary and Paul have had loads of chats over the past few years around ‘the good old days', how they'd found themselves in certain circumstances, and how they're in a different part of the game of life and how much of a different ball game it is. Football was a big part of my life, I've been football mad for as long as I can remember. I played football for the primary school team and that was it, all I was bothered about was football – and cricket. I got into fashion in my fourth or fifth year at school and started going to football games on my own and I noticed the fashion at the matches, it intrigued me. Then came the music and going to away games on my own, visiting different cities. Football grounds in those days were violent places and I was intrigued by it, it fascinated me, I wasn't scared of it. I got beaten up and a couple of football games so I got in with a gang and that's where I think I fell off the rails a little bit. Half the time you'd have to fight your way back to the train station after the away match. You got the feeling you belonged to something, and women were attracted to it as well. For me, hard men don't exist, they're a fabrication. A man's hands might be quicker than another man's hands, it might take him longer to cry than another man and the rule of the jungle necessitates we give people labels, that there's a pecking order, and that dictates that he is a hard man. Even in the midst of being in that goldfish bowl, I always thought; if you lose a loved one, you cry, if you get cut you bleed. My image was a mask of stern faced, don't come near me, don't mess with me, I'm not letting you inside. But, what I was really saying was please don't hurt me anymore, I'm so emotionally hurt, vulnerable and I'm dying inside. It was a façade to keep people away, get in first, kill or be killed, big boys don't cry. It's all a front. As many parallels as there are between our paths, our mindset, our hearts, I often look upon Gary as a kindred spirit, the contradiction on that is that we have ended up in the same place after all these years when our paths crossed, but the paths that we took have been very different. Yes, there is a commonality with words like violence, Nottingham Forest, drink, but my patterns in all those were completely different to Gary's. I needed drink, it was an addiction that was formed through my win/survive at all costs mentality, which was galvanised out of my childhood. If you had a black cat mine had to be blacker, if yours was actually blacker I had two cats. That addictive personality, win at all costs… I was living a total lie and did for decades. It's not been until recent years that I've bottomed it all out, I'm 13 years dry and see things so much more clearly, but I needed alcohol to get by. BEST MOMENTS ‘It's often the way with gangsters, or naughty boys and girls, they build up a cult following with hero worship, promoting the dark side of life as glamorous. Actually, it's not. But there's that perception.' ‘No matter what the first half of your life was like, or whatever has gone off in the past, there's always room to change it in the second half.' ‘You've always had [violence] in Britain in the 50s, 60s and 70s going back to the mods and rockers and the teddy boys, people have always defended their areas. ‘The damage that was done in my formative years has taken me most of my life to unravel.' On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by World Game-Changers director, Kristin Johnson to interview Paul and his friend Gary Clarke (a.k.a. Boatsy) about their childhoods growing up in Nottingham and the challenges they faced growing up. KEY TAKEAWAYS Inner-city Nottingham was a rough, tough place growing up in the 60's, our family was very poor, to the point where the rag and bone man used to come around and gave us a cup and saucer or a goldfish. We bathed in a tin bath in a terraced house with an outside toilet and each of you had to share the same water. They humble days but there was feeling of family togetherness and a sense of the community binding together. Being my grandma's favourite caused so much resentment among my cousins that we were always fighting, even with the girls – I used to fear fighting with the girls more than the boys, because the boys were straight fighters, with the girls you never knew what they were going to do next! But it also bred resentment and jealousy with my dad and my grandad. I remember school in the inner-city being a happy place, but kids now have missed out of a year's schooling because of the pandemic and so many of them have fallen behind so they're playing catch-up and that'll affect them massively in the long term. I was introduced to violence at the age of 8, sickening violence at the hands of my step-dad, to the point where I gave my belief system over to Nottingham Forest football club. But, my world was one of extreme violence, degradation, torture, abuse, it was horrific and set the tone for many, many, many years to follow. At the end of the day, getting the cain, the slipper or whatever at school or at home, it was what we were used to, it was the way things were then. It's easy to look back and say it's wrong, and in modern day society it is wrong, and it was probably wrong then, but we didn't know any different. Obviously, things have changed for the good now. It's only in recent years where I've been having a bit of difficulty and my dad's illness that me, my sister and my aunt have been able to talk about it. He was under a lot of pressure at the time, so I don't blame him entirely and I've been able to get over it a bit. BEST MOMENTS ‘Speaking to kids today about growing up having an outside toilet, they think I'm from another planet!'‘My grandma was my world, I used to spend more time at her house than at my parents house, even when we moved to a better apartment, I'd rather spend the weekend at my grandmas and being taken to the football by my grandad.'‘I had 13 cousins, 8 from one aunt and 5 from the other. In those days we used to joke that they didn't have a telly which is why there were so many kids! But that was the norm.'‘I think kids take too much for granted nowadays, things come to them too easily, though that's not their fault, we adapt as kids to make the best of what we can.' https://notesonfilm1.com/2022/05/28/thinking-aloud-about-film-the-law-of-the-border-hudutlarin-kanunu-lutfi-omer-akad-turkey-1966/ A gorgeous film, shot in a quasi neo-realist style that nonetheless aims squarely at poetry and critique; clearly influenced by John Ford Westerns in its use of landscape; with shoot-outs staged amidst minarets and water fountains, horses vying with jeeps. A structure reminiscent of Angels With Dirty Faces in that two childhood friends end up on different sides of the law. With the great Yilmaz Güney as a father caught between a rock and a hard place -- does he continue smuggling sheep across the border; the only option to feed his people; or does he allow the school to come in that might offer a better life for his son? It's a film where one feels the heat, the thirst, the despair; an existential noir amidst the barren landscape with a great feel for places and the people who inhabit them. Güney as the father has something of Clint Eastwood's granite iconicity about him but with life and feeling behind the eyes. Restored in 2013 by Cineteca di Bologna/L'Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, in association with The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project, Dadaş Films, and the Turkish Ministry of Culture. Early in his career, Shah Rukh Khan did a series of films where he played the anti-hero. One of those films was Ram Jaane  (1995), a full-bodied remake of the James Cagney classic, Angels with Dirty Faces. Ram Jaane could've been a career-defining film for SRK but it failed to have a lasting impact. Nevertheless, it's a very peculiar film and if you're a SRK fan, you probably have many memories around the film. Transcription: LLWD - 22 - Walidah on Envisioning the Future 1:21:45 SPEAKERS Margaret, Walidah Imarisha Margaret 00:14 Hello, and welcome to Live Like the World is Dying, your podcast for what feels like the end times. I'm your host, Margaret Killjoy, and this week I'll be talking to an author and activist and poet and just a historian—I'll be talking to will Walidah Imarisha who is, just, I think is absolutely wonderful. And that'll probably come across way too much in this episode. But I'm talking to her because I'm interested in talking about—well, this week is a little bit of a departure from usual, instead of just talking about the end of all things, right, we'll be talking about envisioning better things. And we'll be talking about how important—how necessary it is—to be able to imagine better things in order to make those better things real. And so we'll be talking about the importance of fiction, but we'll also be talking about what it means to envision a world, say for example, without police and prisons and how we can move towards that. And, yeah, I'm just really excited for y'all to hear this episode. This podcast is a proud member of the Channel Zero Network of anarchist podcasts. And here's a jingle from another show on the network. Duh da duh daaa... Jingle Speaker 1 01:28 Kite Line is a weekly 30 minute radio program focusing on issues in the prison system. You'll hear news along with stories from prisoners and former prisoners as well as their loved ones. You'll learn what prison is, how it functions, and how it impacts all of us. Jingle Speaker 2 01:39 Behind the prison walls a message is called a kite—whispered words, a note passed hand to hand, a request submitted to the guards for medical care. Illicit or not, sending a cadence trusting that other people will bear it farther along until it reaches its destination. Here on Kite Line we hope to share these words across the prison walls. Jingle Speaker 1 01:55 You can hear us on the Channel Zero Network and find out more at kitelineradio.noblogs.org Margaret 02:06 Okay, so if you could introduce yourself with your name, your pronouns, and then like political or organizational affiliations that kind of concern what you're going to be talking about, or maybe like the books that you've written that are about what we're going to be talking about. Walidah 02:22 My name is Walidah Imarisha, she and her pronouns. I am a writer and an educator. I have done a lot of work on science fiction and social change, culminating in co-editing Octavius Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements. I've also written the creative nonfiction book Angels with Dirty Faces: Three Stories of Crime, Prison, and Redemption. Margaret 02:46 Oh, the fact—I've been telling people for years that my favorite book against prison is Angels with Dirty Faces. And I actually have a really hard time reading nonfiction, which is kind of embarrassing because I'm an author. And the fact that you describe it as creative nonfiction really helps explain part of why. For anyone who hasn't read it yet Angels with Dirty Faces is like, um... it's talking about prisons, but it's talking about prisons from the point of view of, like, several specific people who are in prison and, well, your interactions with them. So the reason I have you on this, like, community and individual preparation podcast is—the important—I kind of want to talk to you about the importance of actually, like, envisioning something better. And because it's this kind of cliché that, like, we know what we're against, but do we know what we're for? And sometimes I kind of hate when people ask—I actually almost always hate when people ask that—because my argument is that if you're being hit with a baseball bat, you don't actually have to articulate what you would like society to be like without someone hitting you with a baseball bat before you can get someone to stop hitting you with a baseball bat. But yet at the same time I do personally want a much better society and I know that you've done this work also, yeah, with Octavius Brood, which is just labeled visionary fiction. Is that right? Walidah 04:13 Yeah. Margaret 04:14 Um, could you talk about visionary fiction? And could you talk about what draws you to that? And what draws you to painting better worlds and resistance? Walidah 04:24 Sure. Yeah. I mean, I feel—I agree with you. And I think it's a, you know, it's yes/and. And so, I also think it's really important who's asking these questions, right? Are we asking these questions of each other or people from outside being like, "Well, what do you want then?" Like, I don't really owe you anything if you're coming with that tone. Um, you know, for me, "visionary fiction," I started using that term to refer to the intersection of science fiction or imaginative fiction, fantastical art, and social change. It's deeply steeped in, you know, radical organizing, in thinking and building liberated futures. It's not a utopian project, it's really more about how can we imagine the futures we want to figure out new ways to build them into existence. So we're never going to get to those perfect futures because as science fiction writer Octavia E. Butler said, we're not going to have a utopia until we have a few perfect humans and that seems unlikely. So we won't reach utopia. But I think the practice of utopia is the useful one. And really, I mean, that is what organizing is, is thinking about this world around us and how we actually want it to be and, you know, that's the foundation of Octavia's Brood, which I co edited with Adrienne Maree Brown. The premise is all organizing is science fiction. And we believe that anytime you imagine a world without the ills we fight against, without borders, without prisons without police, that is science fiction because we haven't seen that world. But we can't build what we can't imagine. And so Octavia's Brood is fantastical writing, visionary fiction, specifically written by organizers, activists, and change-makers, the folks who are, you know, in the world trying to make it a better place. And I think that intersection of imaginative spaces and social change is not just useful, but it's absolutely imperative for us to build something other than this world around us. Margaret 06:50 No, that makes sense. I really like the quote that you just had of, we can't build what we can imagine. That—I don't know. I like that a lot. It ties into a lot of what I what I think about with my own writing. And so this is a weird tangent, but okay, so like, so you're saying it's not a utopian project, right, even though it's sort of in some ways about envisioning utopia. And utopia has this like really mixed reputation, right? And I think some of your work, you've talked about how Oregon was developed as a white utopia, for example. And, you know, I remember doing a talk—I think I've even said this on the podcast before, I'm not sure—I was doing a talk about A Country of Ghosts, an anarchist utopian novel that I wrote. And I was doing it at Táala Hooghan, an Indigenous info shop. And someone who was there was like, "Yeah, you know, that white people with utopian ideas destroyed everything, right?" And I was like, "Yeah, no, you're just right. I don't have a counter argument. Like, you're just correct." And so I'm wondering if you could talk a little bit about that, about like the idea—maybe the difference between like utopia as a thing that you're specifically trying to create versus utopia as like a direction to walk or something like that? I don't know. I don't know how to phrase this. Walidah 08:21 No, I think that's I think that's a really useful differentiation. I think the idea—the sort of arrogance and audacity to think that we could create a perfect society, I think is rooted in, you know, everything that is against what we are wanting to build. It's, you know, it does result in, you know, in these projects, I mean, you know, Adrienne often quotes Terry Marshall talking about, you know, that we are in an imagination battle, that we are living in someone else's—specifically as black people—living in other people's imaginations. And this is the result of that— of us, you know, the world being manifested through this white supremacist imagination. And I do think it's important to talk about utopias because, I mean, so much of the goal of white supremacist hetero patriarchal, you know, capitalism has been to create their vision of utopia and to, you know, impress upon it, and press it upon the rest of the world. And so I think it's important to talk about that as utopia because it complicates the notion of utopias you're talking about, but I do think the sort of thought exercise of utopia is useful. I often quote, Eduardo Galeano and his quote of saying, "What is the purpose of utopia then, it is to cause us to advance." Margaret 10:03 Yeah. Walidah 10:05 Yeah, I think if we frame it in that way it becomes incredibly useful. Because as a thought experiment, to me, it roots very much in, you know, in Ursula K LeGuin's The Dispossessed, the subtitle of which is "An Ambiguous Utopia." The foundation of that ideas is these folks think they have built the perfect, you know, anarchist society and then realize, you know, the liberation we want is not a destination. And if we ever think we have reached perfection, that is the very moment that we begin to replicate the very systems of dystopian domination that we fought and give our lives for. And so I think it's important to continually think of this as, you know, as a process and a practice rather than a destination. And to continually get to ask the question, "What is our ideal world?" knowing that we won't reach it, but we will continually not only better ourselves and society, but we will create space to reimagine what we consider to be utopia. I mean, we're all growing. I'm growing. We're all messing up every day. We're all learning how to do better every day, hopefully. And, you know, so to imagine that the destination that we set at some fixed point in the past is the destination we want to go to today is—it actually does a disservice to ourselves, because it stops us from being able to grow and to continue to imagine beyond what we're told as possible. Margaret 11:52 Wait, I thought we were just following the blueprints that Bakunin laid out. Is that not? Like? Yeah, no, I really like that. I really like this idea of that—I mean, for me, it's one of the reasons why, you know, personally, I'm an anarchist but I'm—just in general anti authoritarianism appeals to me is because to me it's this, it's a little bit clear to say like, no, no, no, no, there's not a "perfect." There's not a like, a system that you create, and then enforce on everyone, you know? It's a—instead it's always gonna be messy, it's always gonna be this process. Walidah 12:31 Yeah. I mean, it's rebelling against the tyranny even of our past selves really. Right? Like, the plan that I laid out for myself when I was 20, you know, is certainly not the plan, you know—And even if the destination of this—even if I'm heading the same way on the horizon, certainly the lessons that I've learned along the way have deeply impacted, shifted, and changed. And if I don't allow myself the space to do that, then I've locked myself into a moment that has then become just my life. Margaret 13:06 Yeah. Walidah 13:07 But we do that with our movements every day. Margaret 13:11 I like this idea. So—because it's like, we need the plans. We just—to even think of it like in terms of the individual, like you were saying, like the plan of what you were going to do when you were 20. It's like, we always need to have these plans so that we can do anything, right, otherwise—like, if I didn't have an idea of like, what I want it to be and what I wanted to do, I wouldn't make any progress. But yeah, no, that makes sense to be able to, like completely readdress it at any point. Walidah 13:39 Well and just recognize that, you know, I mean, that the world is so much larger than we imagined, that the sky seems vast. And one point on the horizon that seems like the end point, when we reach it we recognize, oh, there is a whole infinity of sky beyond that. So why would we just stop when we've reached that point if our goal was to just continue exploring and seeing and experiencing and doing as much as possible. Margaret 14:10 That's so good. I like, I love all that shit so much. Okay, so why then fiction? Why choosing to express that specifically through fiction, as you all did with Octavius Brood? Walidah 14:31 Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, I think again, for me, visionary fiction is about creating possibilities and as many entry points. So, you know, I think fiction is one way to do it. I think you can do it in any genre and whatever messy intersections between genres, the infinite intersections of

Walidah Imarisha on Angels With Dirty Faces (rebroadcast) This week we are rebroadcasting an interview that William and Disembodied Voice conducted with Walidah Imarisha, who is an Oregon based writer, educator, public scholar and spoken word artist about her book Angels With Dirty Faces: Three Stories of Crime, Prison, and Redemption, her 2016 book out from AK Press and IAS, which highlights three distinct experiences that are all in different degrees tangential to the realities inherent to the prison industrial complex. This book won the Creative Non-Fiction Award in the state of Oregon earlier on in 2017. In this interview we got to touch on a wide array of topics, mostly centered on Angels With Dirty Faces but also on accountability processes and what might have to change in order for them to feel more effective, her relationship to anarchism, and some upcoming projects and appearances. We also get to touch on the book Octavia's Brood, a compilation of speculative fiction that Imarisha co edited with Adrienne Maree Brown, who also wrote the book Emergent Strategy. More about Imarisha, her work, and upcoming events can be found at http://www.walidah.com/ Announcements New York Anarchist Mental Health Conference 2019 First tho, for all of you who enjoyed our interview with Mango and Marin about anarchist approaches to psychiatry and mental health, there is going to be an Anarchist Mental Health Conference in New York City on Saturday February 23rd 2019 at Judson Memorial Church at 55 Washington Square South, New York NY 10012 The call for proposals reads as follows: “1. Are you an anarchist (or other leftist anti-capitalist anti-authoritarian)? 2. Are you a mental health provider (psychotherapist, counselor, peer specialist, or psychopharm prescriber)? 3. Do you have something to share with anarchist mental health workers? (a critique of the field, a skill you have, or a resource we need to know about)? If the answer to these questions is yes, please email an accessible language abstract of 100 or so words to nycamhc@protonmail.com describing what you want to share, why it's important, and what conference participants will take away from the presentation. Separate from the abstract, please also specify how much time you need (45 minutes max) and what format you'll be using (lecture, workshop, roundtable, longtable, etc) Please submit proposals to nycamhc@protonmail.com by December 31st 2018.” Thanks to everyone who reached out to us about the interview about anarchist mental health, your comments and feedback were truly wonderful to hear! Keep an eye out for further interviews with Mango and Marin, on this and other anarchist and anti authoritarian media platforms.   Support The Vaughn Prisoners! We also would like to report on a very concerning and terrible event which took place recently. For the second time this month, someone connected with the James T. Vaughn prison uprising trials has died. For a bit of context, from a support flyer at It's Going Down, “On February 1st, 2017, inmates at the Vaughn Correctional Center in Delaware took control of their unit and held staff hostage in an uprising that lasted 18 hours. They called the media, released a list of demands, and explained their actions as motivated by their conditions of confinement as well as the election of Donald Trump as President. One prison guard, Steven Floyd, was killed by inmates during the uprising.” The remaining prisoners are still facing charges associated with the riot. Kelly Gibbs, the man who passed, was not a defendant in the first trial, but his name was mentioned during that time in connection with the uprising. The implications of these two deaths are all too apparent; prison workers and wardens often take matters into their own hands in retaliation for acts of prison rebellion. Now it's important to support the Vaughn uprising! We will link to an updated flyer that includes all the names and addresses of the remaining people, as well as to articles for further reading. From the Philly ABC, calling for court support of the Vaughn 17 back in October: In many ways the demands of the Vaughn 17 anticipated the 2018 National Prison Strike, calling for increased wages for their mandatory labor, and the introduction of rehabilitation and education programs. These comrades positioned their struggle inside against the threat posed by Trump's election, which has now been realized in the increasing detention of immigrants and the rise of fascism on the outside. Since the occupation's end, they have been subjected to extreme repression and violence, including beatings and the denial of basic necessities, including having their water shut off. Yet in the face of these hardships and the betrayal, 17 of the defendants are standing together, unwavering in their solidarity. Here is an updated resource on the Vaughn prisoners and how to support. Here is an article on the recent passing of Kelly Gibbs. . … . .. Playlist here.

We continue our Michael Curtiz kick with Angels with Dirty Faces, a James Cagney gangster film with surprising subtleties. We consider Cagney's stardom and how he remains unique, the film's themes of hero worship and glorification of crime, and the interesting relationship between Cagney's gangster and Pat O'Brien's priest. A film that's very much of its time but remains an interesting and entertaining watch. Recorded on 19th November 2018.

More about Imarisha, her work, and upcoming events can be found at http://www.walidah.com/ Resist Package Restrictions for Those Incarcerated in New York State! The thugs who run the NYS prison system (NYS DOCCS) has issued a new directive (4911A) that describes new, draconian package rules that they are testing in 3 facilities as a ‘pilot program'. Currently, at most facilities, family and friends can drop off packages at the front desk when visiting- packages that include fresh fruit and vegetables that supplement the high carb/sugar, meager diet provided by DOCCS. These new rules are problematic in a lot of ways including: 1) Packages can be ordered only from approved vendors. 2) Fresh fruit and vegetables are not allowed. 3) Family and friends cannot drop off packages while visiting. All packages must be shipped through the vendor. 4) Each person is limited to ordering three packages a month for him or herself and receiving three packages a month from others. Each package cannot be more than 30 pounds. Of the 30 pounds per package, only 8 pounds can be food. 5) Allowable items will be the same in all facilities. (No more local permits.) 6) There are far fewer items allowed than before and of the items that are allowed, far less variety. This includes additional restrictions on clothing. 7) The pilot rules are not clear about how books, media, religious items and literature, or other items subject to First Amendment protection will be treated. This could mean that groups like NYC Books through Bars will not be able to send free books to the 52,000 people in the prison system. The pilot program implements an “approved venders only” package system. This means that only packages from approved vendors will be accepted. The vendors appear to be companies that specialize in shipping into prisons and jails. There are currently five approved vendors identified on the DOCCS website. This amounts to a cash grab for these companies. The pilot program is starting at three facilities: Taconic, Greene, and Green Haven. Those facilities will stop accepting packages from non-approved vendors on January 2, 2018. We have to make this package directive unworkable. These new rules are cruel- eliminating fresh fruit and vegetables and creating massive profits for the vampire companies that will fill the niche. WE CAN ORGANIZE TO ROLL THESE RULES BACK. Some ideas how: 1-Sign the petition- share it with your address book, share it on twitter, share it on Facebook. It takes two seconds. https://diy.rootsaction.org/…/no-package-restrictions-for-n… 2-Get in touch with your people in NYS Prisons and let them know about this. Inform them, send them the info. Massive non-cooperation on the part of NYS prisoners will play a huge role in this. 3- Flood the electeds with postcards. Send one to Governor Cuomo and one to Anthony Annucci, the acting commissioner of DOCCS. It costs 34 cents. Andrew M. Cuomo Governor of New York State NYS State Capitol Building Albany, NY 12224 Acting Commissioner Anthony Annucci NYS DOCCS Building 2, State Campus Albany, NY 12226 Some sample text: Dear Governor Cuomo, This holiday season is about giving, not taking away. I object to the new DOCCS package rules. From, (Your Name) (Your relationship to people in prison, if applicable) Dear Acting Commissioner Annucci, The new DOCCS package pilot punishes innocent families. Having a loved one in prison is already expensive and difficult—the new rules make it worse. Rescind the package pilot! There's a brief mention of STAR WARS at the very end as well as a welcome (?) digression Jim and Patrick style as they attempt to wrap things up.  The big news is that Episode 100 is finally arriving in two weeks.  It will be a combination Best of 2015 episode of course, but joining us is friend and favorite Bill Ackerman, who will be asking us questions about what it's like hosting Director's Club.  Submit all feedback and 2015 favorites to directorsclubpodcast@gmail.com.  You must get your emails in by Sunday, January 3rd at midnight!00:00 - 01:46 - Introduction01:47 - 02:47 - Director's Song By Patrick & Regina02:48 - 43:59 - THE EGYPTIAN, THE PRIVATE LIVES ELIZABETH & ESSEX, THE BREAKING POINT, FLAMINGO ROAD, BRIGHT LEAF, etc.44:00 - 01:15:54 - ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, DODGE CITY, THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD, THE SEA HAWK, etc.01:15:55 - 01:40:25 -  WHITE CHRISTMAS, CASABLANCA01:40:26 - 01:56:42 -  Top 3 Curtiz / Sergio's Outro01:56:43 - 02:07:55 -  Patrick & Jim Ramble / Outro Thank you so much for listening and stay tuned for what will most likely be our longest and most long-winded episode to date come the first week of January!  Remember:  directorsclubpodcast@gmail.com.  January 3rd is your deadline.
