Send us a textContent Warning: Filmic violence is and will often be celebrated throughout Season 15 – Squib Season. Second in the series and keeping to their unpatented temporal pincer movement, the enlisted four of TGTPTU storm the beachheads of Season 15 this week to liberate Squib Season's earliest covered picture, the black-and-white WWII movie HELL TO ETERNITY (1960). (Not to be confused with To Hell from Eternity, which does not exist; To Hell and Back, which does and preceded in Technicolor this week's talkie by five years; or From Hell to Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, which is actually the combined titles of two vastly different films released, respectively, 41 years and 35 years after this week's feature.) In Hell to Eternity, the 6'0”-tall, New Orleans-born Caucasian actor Jeffrey Hunter (yes, yes, nerds, we know he's Captain Chistopher Pike, listen back to our The Searchers 4x4 episode but also listen to this week's for an irony behind Hunter's being replaced on Star Trek TOS by actor Sean Kenney in Season 1's clips episode two-parter “The Menagerie”), then age 34, plays war hero and protagonist Guy Gabaldon in this biopic based on the real life events of the 5'4”-foot tall Latino Los Angelean of the same name when he was 18.  As in the movie, Gabaldon was raised by adoptive Japanese parents, learning their first language (and presumably, as in the movie, their stories about fish and love), and enlisted after Pearl Harbor as a translator. It's with his language skills that Gabaldon was able to, as depicted at the end of the film, convince over 800 Japanese soldiers and civilians to surrender, although further research would be required by the author of these show notes to know whether real-life Gabaldon adopted/stole a Japanese child to be his son as implied at the end of the film (IMDB Trivia does claim Gabaldon named one of his sons after Hunter as he was enamored by his portrayal of him, implying Gabaldon had more than one son) or if the eighteen-year-old short king had swell times in swinging Hawaii as shown in the film's contentious, extended party sequence containing not just one but two apartment burlesque routines.  The film is lensed by Burnett Guffey who will go on to shoot (on film) our next earliest entry, i.e., BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967) for which he'd earn his second Academy Award. His first Oscar win was for another flick whose title lends itself to easy confusion with this week's, namely FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (1953). Also involved, Lieutenant (later Captain) Sulu (or the actor and activist who originally played the helmsman/fencing expert in Star Trek TOS). Also, hundreds of Japanese Imperial Army veterans and active-duty U.S. Marines who reenacted events from the Battle of Saipan on the adjacent island of Okinawa for the cameras commanded by Guffrey. And some squibs.   This episode, hear Ryan explain both what squibs are and, later, how a man got his start as a boy. Jack, subsequent to the latter, loses his mind. Tom spoils the surprise appearance by a famous and long-deceased sports announcer. And Ken, as impossible as it might seem, might actually change his opinion on mic, specifically about the seemingly endless Hawaii party scene.  Subscribe and listen as the Good Pod Boys give a 21-gun salute to this forgotten classic. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gLetterboxd (follow us!):Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/BENEATH and get on your way to being your best self.” ** The 1950s was a real transitional decade for classic films. As we got further away from WW2, and the Cold War began to rise up prominently, there was a cynicism across the land that influenced the content of many Hollywood movies. Films took on a grittier, more realistic feel, and the subject matters were darker and more controversial. It was the decade that sparked masterpieces like “Sunset Boulevard,” “All About Eve,” “From Here To Eternity,” “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Anatomy of a Murder,” “ Strangers on a Train,” “Shane,” and “High Noon.” Listen as Steve and Nan talk about some special 1950s films that inspire them. EPISODE 23 - “I Coulda Been a Contender: Classic Casting That Almost Happened” - 02/19/2024 It is well documented that the film “Gone With The Wind” started filming before an actress was cast in the lead role of Scarlett O'Hara. Producer DAVID O. SELZNICK made a spectacle out of who would win the coveted role. It became a national obsession. He considered everyone from TALLULAH BANKHEAD to BETTE DAVIS to LUCILLE BALL. Despite repeated mysterious technical difficulties, Brooke and Jeff persevered to bring you the 30th installment of this very important podcast. Was it worth all of the trouble? Of course the answer is no, probably not. But we begin with the aftermath of a date between Gil and Janice, the Nicolette Cignet photographer and Edda's friend and rival from the dance company we met way back in Episode 24: They Wanted You to Model Because of Sitzfleisch Allure (https://www.9chickweedrage.com/024). Gil is getting advice from Seth and Mark and tells them that he did not in fact bone Janice at the end of the date (which was their expectation), but instead kissed her on the left corner of her mouth. This move, according to Mark, is akin to "lighting a sensual fuse." Edda doesn't believe it, but Amos tries it and transports them to a series of famous romantic movies. First La Dolce Vita, then From Here to Eternity, Casablanca, It Happened One Night (which Jeff mistakenly places in 1939 instead of 1934, sorry!), before veering to North By Northwest and settling into the Tarzan canon. There are so many Tarzan strips, guys. It's all very, very stupid. But we soldiered on through multiple glitches and made it happen. Just for you! Also, Jeff tries really hard to explain Schrödinger's Cat to make a metaphorical point, only to fail in his explanation and then to fail to remember exactly why he was trying to make the point in the first place. The Chickweed strips we discuss this episode: You can find all of the strips either on Twitter by clicking here (https://x.com/9chickweedRAGE/status/1718430506940059796?s=20) or on Instagram by clicking here (https://www.instagram.com/p/Cy9o0MipPU7/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==). Touching Lives with Dr. James Merritt

We are talking about hell today, because we are in a series that we are calling, “From Here To Eternity.” We are going through what the Word of God says about when we die, where we are after we die, and at the end of time when no one else will ever die physically. Though everybody dies, not everybody goes to spend eternity in the same place. There is a real heaven and a real hell, and we need to know what each of these final destinations entails so that we might have a sense of urgency to share the message of Jesus with those who have not secured their eternity in heaven.

Touching Lives with Dr. James Merritt

As we continue in our series called “From Here To Eternity,” we are going to talk about the time we will all stand before God to give an account for our life. This is when we will have our day in court. As we learn about this text, keep in mind that when it comes time for you to have your day in court, make sure you know the judge. Let's dive into Scripture and learn more about this judge and all that we are going to experience in His courtroom one day.

SEVENTY years ago this movie dominated Hollywood and the Academy Awards.  It is a drama disguised as a war film.  From Here to Eternity is a movie that took home a boatload of Oscars back in 1953.  All the performances are incredible and the direction, editing, and cinematography is first rate.   But it's the story that really pulls you in.  The question is did it deserve to win best picture that year.  Were the other four nominees as goo, or even better.  Was there a film (including all the great foreign language movies) that came out in 1953 better than From Here to Eternity.  Download and tune in to hear Jack Ferdman's take on it.SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW Rewatching Oscar:Website: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comApple Podcasts/iTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsiHear RadioPodchaserPodcast AddictTuneInAlexaRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1815964.rssWebsite: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comSocial Media Links: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, InstagramShare your thoughts and suggestions with us through:Facebook Messanger or emailing us atjack@rewatchingoscar.comMusic by TurpacShow Producer: Jack FerdmanPodcast Logo Design: Jack FerdmanMovie (audio) trailer courtesy of MovieClips Classic TrailersMovie (audio) clip courtesy of YouTubeSupport us by downloading, sharing, and giving us a 5 Star Rating.  It helps our podcast continue to reach many people and make it available to share more episodes with everyone.Tags: OscarsAcademy AwardsBest PicturewinnermoviesfilmreviewRewatching Oscarpodcast

After finishing in the final 12 for SSSPOTY (Stephen Sondheim Society Performer of the Year) awards, Cassius Hackforth has continued to make a name for himself within the industry. Shortly after the performing at the final, Cassius was announced to be joining the company for the Charing Cross Theatre's production of From Here to Eternity. It was here where he was reunited with SSSPOTY winner Desmonda Cathabel and he got to make his professional West End debut. Earlier this year, Cassius also joined headed to Guildford to play Peter in the premiere production of Alex Parker and Katie Lam's The Railway Children. In both shows, Cassius demonstrated an enthusiasm and determination to succeed in an industry which can be very unpredictable. Indeed, he charmingly admits to regularly writing to writers, directors and producers to express his desire for work.In one of his first ever interviews, Cassius Hackforth sat down to reflect on his recent successes - making his West End debut and being competing as a finalist at SSSPOTY. He revealed his love for screen work too having recently completed work on a  short film: Move On Up and getting to play speaking role in the upcoming Indiana Jones film. We also get to hear Cassius open up about his struggles too - namely his battle with anorexia and admitting the difficulties of gaining work in the industry. After receiving an eating disorder diagnosis during his training at Trinity Laban, he sought treatment and bravely came forward about his experience hoping to inspire more people to come forward about their struggles. There's something quite remarkable about Cassius' love for performing and we are sure there'll be further opportunities to watch him on stage or on screen going forwards.

The Mau Mau Rebellion of 1952 saw the Kenyan Land and Freedom Army (KLFA) take up arms against the British Empire's occupation of their land. The struggle for decolonisation was bloody and protracted, with many of the KLFA ending up tortured by British soldiers in cruel labor camps. A film crew from Pathé arrived from London to film staged propaganda newsreels on Kenyan streets, depicting the Mau Mau as terrorists and white civillians as the real victims.  Enter Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra. In the midst of this uprising, they land in Nairobi with an entourage of 600 and under heavy armed guard. They are issued a weapon each. Ava is there to make a film, Mogambo. MGM's publicity for the film refers to the African continent as "the white man's graveyard." Sinatra, at a low point in his career, is just tagging along for the ride. He spends most of the trip distracted, anxiously reading his copy of James Jones' novel, From Here to Eternity, over and over.  FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (1953) - a boring film based on a bad novel. Why was it such a hit? Does it deserve to be thought of as the turning point of Sinatra's life? In the flush of triumph, Frank decides to walk all over the woman who supported him through his lowest of lows, including taunting her with new evidence of infidelity. A decision, as we'll see, that he thoroughly comes to regret, as Ava finally confronts the painful reality of what their love has become.

The TV show’s title and setting refers to My Khe beach in the city of Đà Nẵng, Vietnam. The actual beach was nicknamed "China Beach" in English by American and Australian soldiers during the Vietnam War. The series looks at the Vietnam War from unique perspectives: those of the women, both military personnel and civilians, who were present during the conflict. The focal point was the 510th Evacuation Hospital, referred to as “The Five and Dime” E.V.A.C. hospital. The club at the Five and Dime was called The Jet Set. During Season 2 we saw - - - • Frankie Bunsen (Nancy Giles) arrives at “The Five and Dime”, and later becomes an Armed Forces Vietnam radio DJ • Doctor Richard says: “Let me tell you something that you probably don’t know.” So, McMurphy says: “Ha, a doctor’s favorite sport.” • A beach scene reminiscent of “From Here To Eternity” (1953) • Donut Dolly, Cherry, is killed during Episode 7, “Tet Offensive” during an attack on the 510th Evacuation Hospital. The whole gang did the Stroll at Cherry’s wake held at the Jet Set club. This episode was ranked by TV Guide (in 1997) as one of its “100 Greatest Episodes of All Time”. • Three Red Cross women, eight Military women and an unknown number of American civilian women died in Vietnam. • Then there was the “Prom” episode (Episode 11). A classic. • In Episode 6, Frankie falls for a GI who thinks he's Chuck Berry, thus the extra Chuck Berry songs. • Episode 12 entitled “Vets” which featured interviews with actual Vietnam Veterans sharing their experiences. • Boonie (USMC) receives the Navy Cross (Episode 13). • Frankie Bunsen (Nancy Giles) sings a terrific version of America, The Beautiful • McMurphy goes home to Lawrence KS (on leave), due to her father’s heart attack. He says to her, “With all the sons I have in this family, I have to send my daughter off to war.” • In Episode 17, McMurphy dances with a wheelchair-bound soldier to Procol Harum’s, A Whiter Shade of Pale - - - These are the songs we heard during Season 2 1) Reflections (China Beach version) by The Supremes 2) Time Has Come Today by The Chambers Brothers 3) Baby, I Need Your Loving by The Four Tops 4) Surfin' Safari by The Beach Boys 5) Spooky by Classics IV 6) My Guy by Mary Wells 7) A Whiter Shade Of Pale by Procol Harum 8) Respect by Aretha Franklin 9) I've Been Lonely Too Long by The Young Rascals 10) Walk On By by Dionne Warwick 11) No Particular Place To Go by Chuck Berry 12) (You're My) Soul And Inspiration by The Righteous Brothers 13) California Dreamin' by The Mamas & The Papas 14) What Becomes of The Brokenhearted by Jimmy Ruffin 15) All Along The Watchtower by The Jimi Hendrix Experience 16) Limbo Rock by Chubby Checker 17) My Girl by The Temptations 18) I Got You (I Feel Good) by James Brown & The Famous Flames 19) Louie, Louie by The Sandpipers 20) Ooh Baby Baby by The Miracles (w/ Smokey Robinson) 21) Wild Thing by The Troggs 22) (Love Is Like A) Heat Wave by Martha & The Vandellas 23) She's Got You by Patsy Cline 24) Walk Away Renee by The Left Banke 25) The Stroll by The Diamonds 26) Put Your Head On My Shoulder by Paul Anka 27) Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley & The Comets 28) Nadine (Is It You?) by Chuck Berry 29) White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane 30) Where The Boys Are by Connie Francis 31) Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf 32) Puff (The Magic Dragon) by Peter, Paul and Mary 33) Wishin' And Hopin' by Dionne Warwick 34) Turn Around, Look At Me by The Vogues 35) Do You Believe In Magic by The Lovin' Spoonful 36) Dedicated To The One I Love by The Mamas & The Papas 37) You Can't Hurry Love by The Supremes 38) Surfin' USA by The Beach Boys 39) Green, Green Grass Of Home by Tom Jones 40) Shotgun by Junior Walker & The All Stars 41) I'm Sorry by Brenda Lee 42) Good Lovin' by The Young Rascals 43) The Nitty Gritty by Shirley Ellis 44) Hey Joe by the Leaves 45) Crimson And Clover by Tommy James & The Shondells 46) Save The Last Dance For Me by The Drifters 47) The Tracks Of My Tears by The Miracles (w/ Smokey Robinson) 48) Are You Experienced by The Jimi Hendrix Experience 49) (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman by Aretha Franklin 50) Great Balls Of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis 51) Only You (And You Alone) by The Platters 52) Stay by Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs 53) Crazy by Patsy Cline 54) Reach Out Of The Darkness by Friend & Lover 55) Brown Eyed Handsome Man by Chuck Berry 56) Piece Of My Heart by Big Brother & The Holding Company 57) Nowhere To Run by Martha & The Vandellas 58) Angel Of The Morning by Merrilee Rush & The Turnabouts 59) Do You Know The Way To San Jose by Dionne Warwick 60) Leaving On A Jet Plane by John Denver 61) Thanks For The Memory by Bob Hope & Shirley Ross 62) America the Beautiful by Chaim Tannenbaum 63) China Beach Theme (Guitar & Harmonica) ****** Join the conversation on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 ****** or by email at dannymemorylane@gmail.com

Guest-host Michael Phillips says of Minnelli that no one shot better wide-screen Cinemascope compositions and calls the director's SOME CAME RUNNING - based on James Jones's 1957 novel - "one of the great adaptations of a truly lousy book." (RUNNING is based on James Jones's follow-up to "From Here To Eternity.") In the film, which was nominated for 5 Oscars, Frank Sinatra plays a slumping novelist back in his small Indiana hometown for the first time in 16 years. He's torn between two women - call girl Shirley MacLaine and sophisticated English teacher Martha Hyer. Along for the ride is Dean Martin as Sinatra's gambler pal. Michael admits to being "in the bag" for Minnelli's masterfully shot melodrama. But can Adam see his way past the movie's retrograde sexual politics? Learn more about your ad choices. From Here To Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death (W.W. Norton) In From Here To Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death, mortician Caitlin Doughty explores the world’s funeral traditions—from robotic graves in Japan to an Indonesian village where families live with the bodies of their dead for months, even years, prior to the funeral. Following up on her New York Times best-selling book SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES, the author argues that in modern America, funerals have become procedural and impersonal, meant to sanitize and distance the survivors’ from confrontation with mortality—all in the name of profit and “dignity.” The result is a culture pervaded by death anxieties and bereft of traditions that would help people make sense of their own mortal ends. Doughty advocates for alternative rituals designed to save us from the funeral-industrial complex. In her travels, Doughty encounters funeral traditions that, to our eyes, may appear both beautiful and appalling. The ancient Greek historian Herodotus tells a story about two nations with very different perspectives on death: the Greeks and the Callatians. The Greeks cremate their dead and are repulsed by cannibalism, while the Callatians consume their dead and are repulsed by cremation. Herodotus’s lesson remains true to this day: the funeral traditions of other cultures almost always strike the outsider as barbaric. Doughty, however, goes beyond ghoulish spectacle to ask how different cultures benefit from their unique funeral traditions and to question how our own culture might learn from them. Readers travel with Doughty as she learns about, and even participates in: The Japanese tradition of kotsuage, the ritual removal of large bone fragments from cremated ashes by family members using chopsticks A nonprofit mobile funeral pyre operation in Colorado that dodged local ordinances to revive a funeral tradition that dates back to prehistory A museum in Guanajuato, Mexico, for the mummies of disinterred corpses whose relatives could not pay the cemetery’s fee for “perpetual” interment; the museum includes a section for Angelitos, dead children whose bodies were believed to connect survivors to favored souls who could advocate for the living in Heaven An American research effort aimed at composting the dead and returning the body to its natural position in the cycle of life, death, and renewal A Bolivian woman’s efforts to collect and care for ñatitas, preserved human skulls that are treated like community advisors and are alleged to grant wishes; the skulls are at the center of conflicts between traditional beliefs and Roman Catholic teachings and, occasionally, enjoy smoking a cigarette In her encounters with these funeral rites and traditions, Doughty explores the profound value they hold for the community. From Here To Eternity is an eye-opening exploration of the many different, and often surprising, ways humanity embraces the inescapable fact of death, filled with vivid and sometimes shocking details about how diverse cultures send off their dead. But Doughty’s tour of the borderlands between the living and the dead is never simply morbid. As uncanny and surreal as some traditions may initially appear, when Doughty contrasts them to the vapid and emotionally sterile experiences promoted by America’s funeral industry, the depth and value of these ritualized customs is revealed. In a voice that is sympathetic, endlessly curious, and often engagingly humorous, Doughty advocates for a more humane and involved approach to mourning rituals. With lively illustrations by Landis Blair—whose style is a perfect match for Doughty’s humane and insightful prose—From Here To Eternity is a book about death for the living, and the importance of the rituals that help us understand how a meaningful end can enrich our sense of what it means to be alive. Mortician Caitlin Doughty—host and creator of “Ask a Mortician” and the New York Times bestselling author of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes—founded the Order of the Good Death. She lives in Los Angeles, where she runs the nonprofit funeral home Undertaking LA.

It only ran from 1953 - 1954, but" It was a very good year".THIS EPISODE:December 22, 1953. NBC net. "The Plot To Murder Santa Claus". Sustaining. Not auditioned. "Rocky Fortune" about a wanderer that took odd jobs to support himself and never stayed in one place too long. He almost always seemed to meet beautiful women along with trouble. Sinatra was good and was proving to Hollywood that he could do serious work. In the days prior to From Here To Eternity, Frank Sinatra's popularity was waning and this private eye show was an attempt to remedy that. In it, Frank played ROCKY FORTUNE, a "footloose and fancy-free young man," frequently unemployed, who took numerous, adventurous odd jobs. It was a relatively undistinguished series; definitely a "B grade" radio series, saved by Sinatra's charm and a tongue-in-cheek approach.
