In this episode, guest host Trevor Doetsch swings in like a crowbar to the head, as we discuss Batman: A Death in the Family.
Content warning: A minor is murdered. In this episode, we examine one of the most popular Batman stories of all time: A Death in the Family from Batman #426-429 by Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo, published by DC Comics! In 1988, DC established a pair of 900 numbers to allow readers to vote whether Jason Todd, the second Robin, would live or die. Spoiler alert: He dies. But that's not even the most memorable part of this truly bizarre tale that features a cameo appearance by the Ayatollah Khomeini and sees the Joker go from international arms dealer to Iran's ambassador to the United Nations! Can the Dark Knight Detective avenge the gruesome death of his teenage ward and stop the Clown Prince of Crime from killing a roomful of U.N. delegates? And is there any chance that this story achieves that diplomatic immunity known as ... The Comics Canon? In This Episode: · Visit Historic Crime Alley! · What is Iran's endgame, exactly? · What does Superman sound like with his lungs full of gas? · A Lonely Place of Dying · Extraordinary on Hulu · If Books Could Kill · Direct Conversations: Talks With Fellow DC Comics Bronze Age Creators · Fantastic Four: Full Circle by Alex Ross Join us in two weeks as we extend our stay in Gotham to discuss Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert's Batman and Son! Content warning: suicide, threat of sexual assault. In this episode, we visit one of the most popular Spider-Man stories of all time that also happens to be one of the most atypical Spider-Man stories of all time: Kraven's Last Hunt, by J.M. DeMatteis, Mike Zeck and Bob McLeod, published by Marvel Comics! You'd think Kraven the Hunter would be happy. After all, he's finally captured his elusive foe, Spider-Man. But apparently not! The big game hunter shoots his prey, buries him alive, and sets out to prove his superiority by taking the wall-crawler's place and defeating the deadly rat-man, Vermin! Can the newlywed web-slinger wriggle his way out of the grave, defeat Kraven and Vermin, and return home to his blushing bride? And can this six-part saga win at that Most Dangerous Game known as ... The Comics Canon? In This Episode: Spider-Man's black costume Kraven's position on Spidey's enemies list Thoughts on the upcoming Kraven movie Moonshadow by J.M. DeMatteis, Jon J. Content warning: suicidal ideation. In this episode, we drop in on everyone's favorite perky psychopomp, Death of the Endless, with a look at the 1993 three-part miniseries Death: The High Cost of Living, by Neil Gaiman and Chris Bachalo, published by DC/Vertigo! In a nod to the 1934 film “Death Takes a Holiday,” Dream's older sister Death, well ... takes a holiday. We're pretty sure, anyway. You see, there's this girl named Didi who looks a lot like Death, and claims to be Death, wandering the earth as a mortal for 24 hours to get a feel for how the other half lives. But 16-year-old Sexton Furnival, who says he wants to commit suicide, isn't buying what Didi's selling. Can Didi convince Sexton that life is worth living? Can they escape the clutches of the mysterious Eremite and find Mad Hettie's heart? And can this short Sandman spinoff charm its way into that Sweet Hereafter known as ... The Comics Canon? In This Episode: What's Sexton's middle name situation? Catching up with a couple of characters from A Game of You Maniac of New York Vol. 1: Death Train Portrait of a Lady on Fire Shin Ultraman The Sound of Her Wings (Sandman #8) and Façade (Sandman #20) Join us in two weeks as we discuss either Spider-Man: Kraven's Last Hunt or Batman: A Death in the Family! On today's episode, I talk to Eisner Award Hall of Fame comics creator Jim Starlin. Originally from Detroit, Jim broke into comics in the 1970s, first as an art director at Marvel, and then moving into being an artist and eventually a writer, working on books like Iron Man and Captain Marvel. During his decades at Marvel, Jim created or co-created many of the characters and wrote many of the stories that eventually made up the backbone of the MCU, including Shang-Chi, Adam Warlock, Drax the Destroyer and Thanos, his work eventually leading to the Infinity Gauntlet. And this is just a small sampling of the things he's written and drawn. At DC, he wrote Batman, including the famous story Batman: A Death in the Family, and currently he is working on a new Dreadstar graphic novel! In this episode, Chris welcomes Phil from the “Superhero Stress”, “Magic of Movies”, and “The Eternal Knight” podcasts and to look at one of his favorite comic book arcs, “Batman: A Death in the Family”. Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo bring us one of the most devastating and controversial Batman stories of all time. As the second person to assume the role of Batman's sidekick, Jason Todd had a completely different personality than the original Robin. Rash and prone to ignore Batman's instructions, Jason was always quick to act without regard to consequences. In this fatal instance, Robin ignores his mentor's warnings when he attempts to take on the Joker by himself and pays the ultimate price. Driven by anger with Superman by his side, Batman seeks his vengeance as he looks to end the Joker's threat forever. This tale of loss, guilt and brutality is considered one of the most defining pieces in the Dark Knight's mythology.Phil on Twitter: @UnphilteredddSuperhero Stress on Twitter: @SuperheroStressMagic of Movies on Twitter: @MagicMoviePodThe Eternal Knight on Twitter: TEK_PodcastGeek Ultimate Alliance on Twitter: @GUAPodNetworkWFTB on Twitter: @FinestBelieversWFTB Email: worldsfinesttruebelievers@gmail.comChris on Twitter: @ChrisBalgaSupport The Alliance On Patreon & Get Ad-Free, Exclusive, Early Episodeshttps://www.patreon.com/guanetworkGeek Ultimate Alliance Network Is Produced By GeekVerse Podcast www.geekverse.caNetwork Schedule Monday : World's Finest True Believers/Rangers Alliance (Bi-Weekly)Tuesday : DC Alliance Wednesday : Superhero DiscussionThursday : Star Wars/A Walk Through the Multiverse (Bi-Weekly)Friday : Marvel AllianceSunday: Slice of Film (Bi-Weekly)Follow the respective shows on Twitter so when they record live on GeekVerse Podcast Network you can join the chat and add to the conversation!

These next three episodes of my show are special episodes for you all. Before I started my show, I had the most extreme pleasure of appearing as a guest on the ever so popular Movie Based Podcast, "Mad About Movies". Appearing 2 previous times on their show, I joined a side host of theirs, Shane (aka Batman Shane) to discuss lists we had created centering around Batman Himself. This episode is a previously recorded episode that you can also find on the Main/VIP feed of the Mad About Movies Podcast. I really hope you enjoy what I though was a very fun time talking about what I truly believe are the most important Batman Stories you could ever read. You'll see below a more condensed list of the comics we mentioned in this episode in it's description. Please rate and review this show however you can on whatever platform you are using. I hope you all enjoy cause you already know at this point we're... Just Juicin' Around. My list in order: 5. Batman: R.I.P. 4. Batman: A Death in the Family. 3. Batman: Year One. 2. Batman: Hush. 1. Batman: Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. Shane's list in order: 5. Gotham Central. 4. White Knight. 3. Long Halloween. 2. Cataclysm/No Man's Land. 1. Batman is the most popular super hero in existence, but his depiction as the grim, humourless Dark Knight hasn't been the whole story of his 82-year history. In this episode, Paul explores the critical period from 1986-1989 that completely redefined the character through four texts.Miller, Frank. The Dark Knight Returns. DC Comics: New York, 1986. EPISODE 71Greetings, Explorers! We return to Gotham to take a look at Batman: Three Jokers. Story by Geoff Johns, art by Jason Fabok. DC Comics published the book in 2020. Three different murders happened on the same night at the same time in Gotham. Therefore, with all signs pointing to the Joker, Batman deduces that there are not one, but three Jokers. Red Hood and Batgirl, both dealing with trauma they suffered as the Joker's victims, join Batman in solving this mystery.Dennis and Johnny (Frankie was at a Wayne Enterprises' party) discuss what makes someone a good recruit to be a Joker. Next, they ponder why it's OK to kill henchmen but not Supervillians. Finally, the look at how this book ties into the Batman: The Killing Joke and Batman: A Death in the Family. Additional topics include the similar plot twists shared by Metal Gear Solid V and Batman: Three Jokers; if this story qualifies as elevated fan fiction; Gaggy; if Jason Fabok is a Vulcan; and last, but not least, the storytelling and art of Batman: Three Jokers.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/graphicnovelexplorersclub/message See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Batman A Death in the Family (Not to be confused by Death OF the Family Is a four-issue story-arc from 1988 which ran from Batman issues #426-429. It can be easily found via Trade Paperback on Amazon, I provided a link in the shownotes which clicking on that link does support the network. The story was written by the incredible Jim Starlin who also created Thanos illustrated by Connecticuts own Jim Aparo known for his work on Batman, Aquaman and The Spectre. The iconic covers were drawn by the amazing Mike Mignola who also created Hellboy. From Wikipedia Introduced as a replacement for then-Robin Dick Grayson in 1983, the impulsive Jason Todd had grown very unpopular amongst readers. Aware of this, editor Dennis O'Neil conceived of letting fans decide his fate, leading to the creation of the storyline. For 36 hours, beginning on September 15, 1988, readers could call the two numbers to cast a ballot on whether he should live or not. Over 10,000 votes were cast, with a narrow majority in favor of killing the character. In Batman #428, the Joker kills Todd by blowing up the warehouse he is being held hostage in. Batman relieves Jason Todd of his duties as Robin due to his impulsive nature. Enraged, Jason storms off. On his own, he learns that Catherine Todd is not his biological mother and sets off to find his real mother, eventually tracking her to the Middle East. Meanwhile, the Joker escapes from Arkham Asylum, and Batman learns that he has obtained a nuclear weapon and plans to sell it to terrorists in war-torn Lebanon. In 1988, DC Comics urged the American people to exercise their right to vote by calling a 900 number and deciding the fate of Robin #2, Jason Todd. The people were not kind to Jason. We read “Batman: A Death in the Family” from issues 426-429 by Jim “Infinity” Starlin. Does anybody actually call him that? Anyways, this book doesn’t get very cosmic, but we do get the Joker/Ayatollah team-up we didn’t know we needed. All this, plus Secret Wars #4! Next Time: The Death of Superman!
For the (belated) inaugural installment of Four-Color Flashback 2018, wherein Paul and Arlo will be discussing a different classic superhero story each month, they've recruited their old pal Kenn Edwards to help them discuss Batman: A Death in the Family by writer Jim Starlin and artist Jim Aparo. Kenn knows a thing or two about the Caped Crusader, having been part of the Batman Immortal fan film project. However, he's never read this particular story, in which the Joker savagely beats Robin to death. That puts him on equal footing with our hosts: it's one of Arlo's blind spots and Paul hasn't read it since it was published in 1988. They're all a little shocked by how anachronistic its goofy plotting and dialogue seem given its release in a post-Dark Knight Returns landscape. Superhero comics were starting to mature, and this one feels like it may have gotten left behind. The gang discusses the impact of Robin's death; whether Bruce’s hypocrisy is a bug or a feature; the ludicrous political implications of the Joker’s scheme; and why the follow-up story A Lonely Place of Dying is much better. Plus, Arlo is still watching Disney cartoons. Next: be vewwy, vewwy quiet. The boys and their pal Nate Curtiss are hunting Krasinskis for a discussion of A Quiet Place. THE BREAKDOWN Intro / Banter (00:00 - 30:05) Main Topic (30:05 - 1:42:44) Four-Color Flashback Schedule (1:42:44 - 1:50:24) Outro / Next Week (1:50:24 - 1:57:53)
This week, Wesley “Wezzo” Mead stops by for more abuse. He joins Paul and Arlo to once again discuss Chris Carter’s seminal sci-fi series The X-Files; this time, the gang talks season 8, the last pre-revival season to feature David Duchovny as a (semi-)regular. They discuss how frustrating it is the show can’t let go of Duchovny when it clearly needs to; why the introduction of Robert Patrick as John Doggett is so strong; how, despite some real stinkers, this is the most consistent the show has been in years; and how Carter & Co. continue to put Scully in boxes that conform to gender stereotypes. Plus, Wezzo has more obscure Netflix recommendations, Paul is obsessed with the forthcoming Spider-Man game for PS4, and--guess what--Arlo ropes Wezzo into discussing politics again. Next: this year’s Four-Color Flashback gets off to a belated start as Kenn Edwards drops by to discuss Batman: A Death in the Family. THE BREAKDOWN Intro / Banter (00:00 - 36:35) Political Banter (36:35 - 1:09:05) Main Topic (1:09:05 - 2:31:16) Outro / Next Week (2:31:16 - 2:38:21)
