POPULARITY
Night of the Bloody Apes (1969), Don't Go in the House (1979), Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981) In 1984, in the U.K., the Video Recording Act was passed, which required certification of all video releases by the British Board of Film Classification, aka BBFC. This all came about due to a list of video titles that a group of various religious and other social groups run by the likes of Mary Whitehouse, deemed unsuitable to be viewed and thought for sure it would help corrupt the youth of England. The initial list had 72 titles on it, both films that had already been released after obtaining a BBFC certificate but now was deemed too offensive, as well as a whole bunch of other titles that were believed to fall under the obscenity law. If you own a shop that rented or sold one of these titles, you could be shut down, fined, and possibly even go to jail for it. And this all took place, not in the dark ages, but in the mid 1980s. Hard to believe it, especially growing up here in the U.S. Some of those titles have only recently gotten passed and released over in the U.K., even 40 years later. Blows the mind. In this episode, we discuss not only the whole Video Nasty era, but cover 3 films from that list, with each of us watching all 3 and see if we made it through without turning us into mindless deviants. Oops. Too late. Films mentioned in this episode: The Bat Woman (1968), Beast in Heat (1977), The Body Snatcher (1957), The Braniac (1962), The Burning (1981), Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981), Curse of the Crying Woman (1962), The Curious Dr. Hump (1969), Dead of Winter (1987), Doctor of Doom (1963), Don't Answer the Phone (1980), Don't Go in the House (1979), Don't Look in the Basement (1973), Don't Open Till Christmas (1984), Driller Killer (1979), Entrails of a Virgin (1986), Eyes of a Stranger (1981), Faces of Death (1978), Fear No Evil (1981), The Gestapo's Last Orgy (1977), Horror High (1973), I Drink Your Blood (1971), I Spit on Your Grave (1978), Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (1974), Maniac (1980), Mortuary (1982), Mother's Day (1980), Nekromantik (1988), New York Ripper (1982), Night of the Bloody Apes (1969), Perdita Durango (1997), The Prowler (1981), Psycho (1960), Roar (1981), Santo and Blue Demon vs. Dracula and the Wolf Man (1973), Santo and Blue Demon vs. the Monsters (1970), Santo vs. Frankenstein's Daughter (1972), Santo vs. the Head Hunters (1971), Santo in the Treasure of Dracula (1969),Santo in the Vengeance of the Mummy (1971), Shock Waves (1977), Silent Night Deadly Night (1984), Speed (1994), SS Experiment Love Camp (1976), Subspecies (1991), Suspiria (1977), Terrorvision (1986), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Twister (1996), Unhinged (1982), El Vampiro (1957), The Wresting Women vs. the Aztec Mummy (1964)

(https://discord.gg/jWF9BbF) OTTO BINDER: THE LIFE AND WORK OF A COMIC BOOK AND SCIENCE FICTION VISIONARY by Bill Schelly Otto Binder: The Life and Work of a Comic Book and Science Fiction Visionary chronicles the career of Otto Binder, from pulp magazine author to writer of Supergirl, Captain Marvel, and Superman comics. As the originator of the first sentient robot in literature ("I, Robot," published in Amazing Stories in 1939 and predating Isaac Asimov's collection of the same name), Binder's effect on science fiction was profound. Within the world of comic books, he created or co-created much of the Superman universe, including Smallville; Krypto, Superboy's dog; Supergirl; and the villain Braniac. Binder is also credited with writing many of the first "Bizarro" storylines for DC Comics, as well as for being the main writer for the Captain Marvel comics. In later years, Binder expanded from comic books into pure science writing, publishing dozens of books and articles on the subject of satellites and space travel as well as UFOs and extraterrestrial life. Comic book historian Bill Schelly tells the tale of Otto Binder through comic panels, personal letters, and interviews with Binder's own family and friends. Schelly weaves together Binder's professional successes and personal tragedies, including the death of Binder's only daughter and his wife's struggle with mental illness. A touching and human story, Otto Binder: The Life and Work of a Comic Book and Science Fiction Visionary is a biography that is both meticulously researched and beautifully told, keeping alive Binder's spirit of scientific curiosity and whimsy. Why does Wakanda have no suburbs, and should we destroy them if it did? Is it ethical to become a cyborg, like in the Justice League? Can venom – the toxins or the Marvel character – save your life? In this 2021 New York Comic Con edition of “The LIUniverse,” Astronomer Dr. Charles Liu hosts venom researcher Dr. Mandë Holford and environmental expert Kendra Pierre-Louis for our panel “The Science of Science Fiction.” Speaking to a packed room (in a convention ‘plagued' by empty panels and COVID-19 attendance limits) the panelists share their insights into the science within the Marvel and DC comics and movies as well as the rest of geekdom. In our three segments on nature, technology, and the multiverse, you'll hear about superhumans and mutants from Spider-Man to the X-Men to Captain Planet. You'll also learn some science, like how a version of string theory predicts a parallel universe where gravity would give us all superpowers. One of our favorite parts of our panels is taking questions from the audience. This time, fans like you asked some great ones. How will gene editing change the world? Can we tell if an AI, such as the Vision, is really self aware? Does scientific advancement need military rivalries as in “For All Mankind,” a show that flips the space race on its head? What will be the biggest technological advancement of the next 100 years: perhaps miniature organs, or maybe social innovations, or something else entirely? Plus, find out what on Earth “life expectancy escape velocity” is, and what it could mean for the future of humanity. You can expect to hear about some of your favorite comic superheroes on screen and off, like Black Panther, The Avengers, Wandavision, The Suicide Squad, Braniac, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Loki, The Fantastic Four, Lex Luthor, Ant-Man, and – lest we forget – The Incredible Hulk. Relive the experience (if you were lucky enough to be there) or find out what you missed! Geek out with us! Quick side note: Once again, I want to thank you all for 10,000 plays! This is a huge accomplishment, so to celebrate, I'm doing a huge Q & A! You don't have to worry about asking questions relating to Wings of Fire or Warriors. However, please refrain from asking any inappropriate/very personal questions, as those will not be answered. If you don't have access to Google, then you can leave an Apple Podcasts review, drop a comment on Spotify, or send me and email! Those are all ways you can get your questions answered. (yayy :D) Like I said, this episode was not an original idea, this was inspired by the WoF podcast Talon Talk, so make sure to check it out! I wrote down 20 questions all relating to Wings of Fire, and in this episode I try to answer every single question, from Wings of Fire YouTubers to grumpy queens like Coral! I mean, what? I didn't say anything, Your Majesty! AHHH NO SEAWING ANIMUS ARE CHASING ME!! *throws a box of crayons at them and runs away in Juniperheart-y style* Guess I shouldn't have said anything about Her Majesty Coral. Jace and Rocky from Comic Boom are back with another week of DC Comics. It's a pretty solid wee , but with so many books, the guys are dividing it up into two episodes and here is the first! Superman '78 #1 - This six issue series gets off to a great start as we are introduced to Braniac. A classic Superman villain that would have been the antogonist of the story Richard Donner would have brought to life in Superman III if he hadn't left the franchise. Both the art & scripting of this first issue, perfectly capture the tone of the classic Christopher Reeve version of the character. Writer - Robert Venditti, Artist - Wilfredo Torres, Color Artist - Jordie Bellaire, Letterer - David Lanphear Harley Quinn #6 - Harley makes her way to Alley Town where she teams up with Catwoman to try and find the drugs that are being developed that will lead to Fear State. The problem is, Selina is not exactly in the mood for a team-up, but that has never stopped Harley before and likely won't this time. This issue definitely feels like a lead-in to the Fear State event. Writer - Stephanie Phillips, Artist - Laura Braga, Color Artist - Arif Prianto, Letterer - Andworld Designs Checkmate #3 - Just when it seems like Checkmate may be one step ahead of Mark Shaw, the tables are turned and it appears he is two steps ahead of them. Still not sure what to make of this story or the confusion inherent with the non-linear story structure Bendis is using. However, we love the agency that Lois Lane has in this issue. Writer - Brian Michael Bendis, Artist - Alex Maleev, Color Artist - Dave Stewart, Letterer - Josh Reed Batman Superman #21 - We have reached the end of the Gene Luen Yang Archive of Worlds story and it went out the same way it came in. The story has been a celebration of the fun of comics & feels like an instant classic with different versions of the World's Finest heroes & spectacular artwork from Ivan Reis , Sabine Rich & co. Writer - Gene Luen Yang, Penciller - Ivan Reis, Inker - Danny Miki, Color Artist - Sabine Rich, Letterer - Saida Temofonte Batman Reptilian #3 - The Batman in this incredible Garth Ennis story continues to exhibit a dark humor & his relationship with Alfred is a real highlight. It is easy to see how this version of the Dark Knight would indeed strike fear into the hearts of the criminal element of Gotham City. Meanwhile, the art from Liam Sharp perfectly captures that same dark whimsy & is spectacular in its ability to set an emotionally charged setting. Writer - Garth Ennis, Artist - Liam Sharp, Letterer - Rob Steen Action Comics #1034 - Superman makes a tough choice and the repercussions may have a lasting impact. While back at the Fortress of Solitude, Thao-La has a decision of her own to make. Can she put the horrific way she was raised behind her and refuse to follow the orders of Mongul? Is she strong enough to overcome the innate servitude for the space-faring despot she has experienced since birth? Writer - Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Artist - Christian Duce. Color Artist - Adriano Lucas, Letterer - Dave Sharpe Mister Miracle: Source of Freedom #4 - This series continues to impress. We have had a few character moments so far, but the majority of the book has been all out action. This issue we get a chance to catch our breath as Oberon re-introduces himself to Shilo Norman and we learn just how much Shilo meant to the previous Mister Miracle, Thaddeus Brown. It's inspired storytelling & certainly adds a feeling of legacy to the character beyond anything that has come before. Writer - Brandon Easton, Artist - Fico Ossio, Color Artist - Rico Renzi, Letterer - Rob Leigh

Joe Corallo, Eric Breen and Wes travel back to 1983 and talk about the first appearance of the new Braniac. Introduced in the back-up story in the 45th anniversary special Action Comics #544, Marv Wolfman and Gil Kane gave Braniac a new sinister design and personality. Braniac had become too similar to Lex Luthor, who was firmly established as Superman's arch nemesis. The new Braniac was a colder and even more calculating foe than before. Gil Kane's stunning art brought the new diabolical sentient robot to life with an enormous skull-shaped ship in tow. Superman eventually enlists the aid of the Justice League and Teen Titans when Braniac presents a clear and present danger to earth. Marv Wolfman and Gil Kane's Action Comics #544-546 goes down as a new take on a classic villain and masterclass in superhero storytelling. Host: Tehran Von Ghasri - @iamtehran On this weeks CW's SUPERGIRL - SEASON 5 - EPISODE 19 - SEASON FINALE - IMMORTAL KOMBAT - Brainy's betrayal is a real sacrifice, Alex becomes the superhero we deserve not the one we need, Kara hates being sidelined, Leviathan G-ds go Wild, and Kara and Lena team up but do they make up? We being the episode with a clearly conflicted Brainy who is unwilling to let his friends die for the greater good, especially since the death of Supergirl and team seems unnecessary and like a Lex Luthor personal vendetta. Brainy has been betraying his friends in order to stop Leviathan but is coming to the realization that Luthor may have other plans. He meets up with his female Brainy counterpart (played by his real life sister Meaghan Rath) at the bar where she convinced him to go along with Lex Luthor's plan in the first place. Brainy resolves to not let his friends die and decides to use a Braniac pod to capture the Levathan G-ds. Inside the Leviathan ship we see there is a radiation field that disables and destroys any who attempt to enter without a shield. Brainy has no such shield and puts himself at considerable life threatening risk to insert the miniature code to capture Leviathan. Lex Luthor on the other hand does have such a pin, as he was extended one when Gemma invites him unto the Leviathan ship, which has a low tech elevator and seems to simply be an old fashioned casino. Lex then enters the actual tech ship and after suffering for a few because of the radiation field is given a pin that protects him. He is told by Gemma to keep it as he is one of Leviathan now. Kara and Lena seemingly team up but Kara is reluctant to make up. Lena has seen the error of her ways, but Kara reminds Lena she was not the only one hurt. Lena has consistently hurt Kara ever since, by pretending to be Kara's friend, having Kara steal for Lena, Lena then stealing from Kara, and also trying to kill Kara with Kryptonite. Kara states if Lena is looking for absolution, she will not find it from Kara. However they must work together. Lena works hard to make Kara another Kryptonite suit to protect her from Leviathan who is in possession of Kryptonite. To get Kara to the lab is not an easy task either as Leviathan is searching for her. Kara, used to flying, takes the bus while Jonn Jonnz and Mgann pose as her and fly off gaining the attention of Leviathan power monger Ramakhan, and newcomers Tezumak and Sela. A battle occurs with Mgann being hit. Nia All and Alex join the battle, Alex in her new tech suit designed by Jonn. On the ship a failing Brainy is visited by Lex Luthor who states he knew Brainy would take this course of action. He takes the capsule as it is part of his plan and hands it to his mother who has a seemingly sinister plot to develop that will form next season. Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Superman 3. Director Richard Lester returns from his work on the theatrical cut of Superman 2 to helm Superman 3 and leans more heavy into comedy this time around. An earlier screenplay for Superman 3 had Braniac and Mister Mxyzptlk as the villains, but after Richard Pryor did an extended routine on the Superman movies on The Johnny Carson Show, the script was rewritten to focus more on Pryor. Gus (Richard Pryor) is unemployed in Metropolis, but finds out he's a latent computer whiz. Greedy multimillionaire Ross (Robert Vaughn) hires Gus to help with his nefarious scheme. Superman (Christopher Reeve) has to save the day once again. We get some nice moments with Clark Kent reuniting with Lana (Annette O'Toole), an old high school friend back in Smallville. Other highlights of the film are Bad Superman fighting against Clark Kent in a junkyard, and Gus acting drunk with a security guard to gain access to a computer terminal. Too bad the plot's too complicated, most of the jokes don't land, and the pacing's damn horrendous. Mat found parts of Gilbert, a new documentary on comedian and podcaster Gilbert Gottfried directed by Neil Berkeley, to be moving. It's a personal look at his life and career. He caught The Disaster Artist in the theater and found it to be agreeable. It's a comedic look at the making of The Room, an infamous low budget drama that became a cult comedy favorite due to its poor writing and stilted line delivery. James Franco's loose directing helps capture the ramshackle feel of the movie it's about. Don't watch The Disaster Artist without watching The Room first. Thrasher has been working his way through the Harry Potter films again and found Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix to be his new favorite of the series. He also liked a rare Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode on the flick Robot Holocaust. Listen to this episode while wearing an oversized cowboy hat and drinking bourbon for maximum enjoyment. Well over the next few weeks we are going to covering a couple scripts that were the inspiration of this podcast. They have been mentioned time and time again but haven't been discussed and it's time to rectify that. This first week is a little script written by Kevin Smith called Superman Lives. Maybe one of the most famous un-produced scripts, there's even a documentary about the movies failed production. Now there have been many Superman movies that have already been released, but where does this one fall? Written by: Kevin Smith Logline: When Lex Luthor teams up with the cosmic entity Braniac, Superman faces his biggest struggle yet, one that will push him past his limits or see him die trying. If you want to send in any questions or comments you can send them to . you can follow us on Twitter and Instagram @shelvedpodcast. Be sure to rate and review the show on iTunes.

OTTO BINDER: THE LIFE AND WORK OF A COMIC BOOK AND SCIENCE FICTION VISIONARY by Bill Schelly Otto Binder: The Life and Work of a Comic Book and Science Fiction Visionary chronicles the career of Otto Binder, from pulp magazine author to writer of Supergirl, Captain Marvel, and Superman comics.
