What if there was a practice that helped us collectively witness and digest world events without becoming overwhelmed, indifferent, or numb? What if this practice could lead to new levels of collective healing? Thomas sits down with Kosha Joubert to discuss this revolutionary practice, called Global Social Witnessing. Kosha is the CEO of the Pocket Project, a non-profit organization co-founded by Thomas that's dedicated to growing a culture of trauma-informed care. Global Social Witnessing addresses our current lack of societal rituals for processing traumatic world events. It offers a way to move beyond individual overwhelm to collectively face challenges with greater presence, compassion, and agency for positive change. It joins people across borders and cultures to co-regulate and bring an embodied awareness to our collective nervous system. And you can do it from the comfort of your own home! Kosha also shares details about the Pocket Project's upcoming Global Social Witnessing Facilitator Training, which you can learn more about here: https://pocketproject.org/global-social-witnessing-training/?ref=86   Click here to watch the video version of this episode on YouTube:

A ‘green road' leads displaced Ukrainians to shelter in ecovillages

When Iryna Kazakova rolled her suitcase down the gravel road last month into Hallingelille, an ecovillage located about 6 miles outside of Ringsted, Denmark, she was greeted with warm hugs. Kazakova had just returned to Denmark after a two-month stay back home in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, in Ukraine, where she was visiting her parents. Kazakova had fled the city, located just 20 miles from the border with Russia, last summer after it had become a major target of attacks.“I decided that I want to go to Ukraine to understand if I can [be] able to live there for a long time ... to visit my friends, my family, and to understand if I'm strong enough to live with all these alarms and explosions,” she said.  Iryna Kazakova is one of the founders and coordinators of the Green Road project. She is currently based at Hallingelille ecovillage in rural Denmark. Credit: Pernille Baerendtsen/The World But upon her return to Hallingelille, Kazakova was reminded of the work still ahead as one of the founders and coordinators of the Green Road, an initiative to connect Ukrainian refugees with safe places to stay in ecovillages across Ukraine and throughout Europe. Over the last year, the Green Road project has helped relocate at least 3,000 displaced Ukrainians in 40 ecovillages throughout Ukraine and over 300 ecovillages in Europe, including Denmark. As the war continues in Ukraine, the Green Road has become a testament to the power of international friendships, networks and informal support in times of crisis.  Hallingelille is surrounded by seemingly endless grassy fields dotted with white dandelion flowers. Credit: Pernille Baerendtsen/The World Ecovillages are intentional communities formed by people with a common interest in sustainable living. According to the umbrella organization Global Ecovillage Network, there are over 10,000 ecovillages around the world — and no two are alike. The ecovillage movement is said to have originated in Denmark, with roots in the Danish co-housing movement of the late 1960s. Its 49 ecovillages are some of the most established in the world and often emphasize a communal lifestyle. Hallingelille, one of Denmark's newer ecovillages established in 2005, is among the many European sites on the Green Road map. Credit: Pernille Baerendtsen/The World This idyllic, rural community, surrounded by endless grassy fields dotted with white dandelion flowers, is home to about 50 adults and 20 children who live in 20 ecologically designed houses on land shared with several horses, sheep, pigs and a few loud roosters. A common house overlooking a peaceful lake is the heart of this community — members share communal dinners here at least twice a week. Over the last 15 years, residents have also built a sauna, a multipurpose warehouse, yoga and meditation center and an art studio. The group also works together to tend a forest, greenhouse and several vegetable gardens. Far from the bombs and explosions of an ongoing war in Ukraine, it's here where Kazakova works alongside other Ukrainian and Danish volunteers on ensuring that the Green Road project continues.Developing the Green Road visionKazakova said that a flurry of phone calls with her colleague, Anastasiya Volkova, founder of Permaculture in Ukraine, and Maksym Zalevskyi, president of Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) Ukraine, led to the idea that ecovillages could provide temporary shelter for Ukrainian refugees. Within the first few days of the invasion, calls poured in from members of Europe's Global Ecovillage Network ready to assist — from Germany to Denmark, Hungary to Poland — and these weekly calls became a lifeline, she said. “It was an island of stability in an unstable world for us,” she said. A map that would become known as the Green Road began to circulate online along with a Google sheet and volunteer contact information for every ecovillage willing to host within Ukraine and across Europe, including Hallingelille.  A screenshot of the map that later became known as the Green Road helps identify ecovillages across Ukraine and Europe where displaced Ukrainians can find refuge.  Credit: Green Road screenshot via Google Maps “During the first year of war — especially the first six months — we were quite busy, like we didn't know what would happen, so we had to prepare as much as we could. And that's also why we applied for all these funds,” said Camilla Nielsen-Englyst, the head of Denmark's National Association of Ecovillages (LOS), who also lives at Hallingelille. Denmark's Civil Society and Development organization granted about $90,000 to the Green Road project through an emergency fund — and honored them with an Initiative Prize in April. Several other individual and private donors and organizations have also raised funds and materials for the project.Nielsen-Englyst said that established working relationships with Ukrainians on prior permaculture and ecovillage design trainings, seminars and summits over the last six years made it possible to act quickly — and collectively — on a humanitarian response.  Camilla Nielsen-Englyst (center) is the the head of Denmark's National Association of Ecovillages (LOS) and also lives at Hallingelille. Credit: Pernille Baerendtsen/The World Nataliya Masol and Andriy Parashchenko, originally from Kyiv, were familiar with ecovillages and heard about the Green Road online. Using the map, they sought out shelter with their five children, with brief stays in Romania, the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany before arriving in Hallingelile. For Masol, expanding the greenhouse and planting tomatoes was the first thing she did when she arrived.“When we came from Ukraine, it was like, we have no job and we were searching for the job and it was like, the first thing I begin to do because I need to do something. And last year, we had a lot of tomatoes growing,” she said from the sund-renched greenhouse adjacent to the common house where a new batch of tomatoes grow. Olesia Panchenko, also from Kyiv, had stayed in Denmark before and decided to follow in Kazakova's footsteps to Hallingelile as a volunteer with the Green Road. Panchenko said it was a chance meeting with Kazakova at a permaculture design training in Ukraine a few years back that changed her life and set her firmly on an ecological path.Panchenko entered the country as a tourist and only planned to stay for two months or so. But last year, Denmark passed a law called the Special Act that allows Ukrainians to bypass the asylum system and expedites residency status for a period of two years. To receive the estimated $800 monthly stipend from the state, registered Ukrainians must take Danish-language classes and actively seek employment. For Panchenko, that means juggling between volunteer work with the Green Road project, language classes, an unpaid internship, and ecovillage responsibilities like planting trees and tending to the vegetable gardens, though she noted how the Danes don't necessarily take advantage of the vegetables, opting for the supermarket instead. “Usually, you have two types of villages. I think in Ukraine, it's a little bit different from Denmark, because in Ukraine, usually, it means that you live and learn to grow your own food. Mostly, you can be self-sufficient. And so, it's mostly about the eco-way, not [the] community way,” Panchenko said. Iryna Kazakova and Olesia Panchenko work on the Green Road project from Hallingelille, an ecovillage in rural Ringsted, Denmark. Credit: Pernille Baerendtsen/The World Andriy Parashchenko, who came to Hallingelille with his family, said he enjoys the community focus here. He landed a job nine months ago as an IT programmer and now makes a three-hour commute back and forth to Copenhagen two days a week, working remotely the rest of the time. He said he's earning enough to rent a house on Hallingelille where they plan to stay for now. “In Danish culture, I like [it] a lot and I'm learning a lot — how they can be relaxed in their life and be happy and relaxed and do the same work. And how to say — they can achieve the same goals as if working hard. So, I'm learning to work in the Danish way here — relax and enjoy life,” Parashchenko said. Hallingelille community members share a meal together in the common house that overlooks a shimmering lake. Credit: Amanda Leigh Lichtenstein/The World Support for Ukraine's ecovillagesWhereas Danish ecovillages have a strong emphasis on community, Ukrainian ecovillages have traditionally focused moreso on self-sufficiency.Before the war, Kazakova said about 600 people were living in simple, modest ecovillages scattered across Ukraine, and that number doubled when about 600 internally displaced people arrived hoping to survive the harsh winter. Most of the country's 40 ecovillages had some food supplies, simple infrastructure and a way to grow food, but not much in the way of accommodations or other critical supplies. “In the very beginning, we really needed just very simple things because people arrived in the ecovillages without anything. So, we bought food, clothes, some medicines and very, very simple things because there was nothing,” Kazakova said. But what the villagers had — they were willing to share, she added. Within the first six months, Green Road coordinators oversaw the delivery into Ukraine of 35 greenhouses, 10 two-wheel tractors, gardening tools, tanks for harvesting rainwater, food dehydrators and equipment for milking animals. They also sent several refrigerators, washing machines, beds and mattresses as well as building materials. Zalevskyi, who started GEN Ukraine in 2018 with the aim to unite and strengthen the country's existing eco-settlements, said that many people who fled to rural areas during the war came from Soviet-era industrial cities with no prior experience or interest in an ecovillage lifestyle. Maksym Zalevskiy is the founder of Ukraine's national ecovillage network and also a co-founder of the Green Road project.  Credit: Courtesy of Maksym Zalevskiy This has ushered in a “new wave of evolution for our ecovillages,” Zalevskyi said, adding that community-building and conflict resolution has been necessary to mediate the clashing of ideologies — pro-Ukrainian, pro-Russian, and pro-Soviet. “Our Green Road [connects] all of them and we [connect] because we help refugees ... we have no ideological conflict because war is for helping people in collapse. It [made] us a strong network because everyone wants to help,” Zalevskyi said. Over the last year, about 300 people eventually moved on to other living situations while 300 have stayed on in the ecovillages. The Green Road project is working with these groups to restore abandoned houses and learn new skills like nonviolent communication, decision-making, and permaculture methods that emphasize care for people and the land and fair sharing. “We want to save [our] communities and continue community-building and we [are] using tools and instruments ... to do that in harmony with people and mediate conflicts in all communities,” Zalevskyi said. The project has now shifted to a new stage geared more toward advocacy, capacity-building and networking. With plenty of bicycles to go around in Denmark, the group launched a bicycle project that they hope will generate income for displaced Ukrainians living in the ecovillages. They plan to collect used bicycles from Denmark to donate to about six ecovillages, and offer workshops on how to repair and build bicycles for resale.  The Green Road is now supporting bicycle workshops in Ukrainian ecovillages as an income-generating initiative. Credit: Courtesy of GEN Ukraine/Facebook Nielsen-Englyst, with LOS, noted that there have been challenges along the way. Hallingelille residents have had to adjust to new dynamics as hosts, and the relentless organizing to meet overwhelming needs has inevitably burned people out. “There are some compromises and some costs and sometimes, also some conflicts,” she said. “And I think that's also what we can see in Ukraine as well, that living together is not always easy.” Kazakova said she keeps “the millions of Ukrainians who continue to live in fear” at the forefront of her mind while living in Denmark. As the war continues in Ukraine, so does the Green Road toward a more peaceful and sustainable future.

Ecovillages. Intentional Communities. Communes. Cohousing communities. There's a whole world of communal living structures that seek to reimagine what it means to find home...together! There are many different definitions of these kinds of communities, but today I speak with Emiliano Espinosa of NextGEN North America (NextGENNA): a youth-focused ecovillage network that focuses on connecting young people with communities whose structure helps them live out their commitment to integrated sustainability. Integrated Sustainability is defined here as "whole systems thinking rooted in a holistic worldview that invites a broader range of individuals to become inspired by and contribute towards a socially, economically, ecologically, and culturally sustainable future" (1). We get into some exciting angles on this idea, including communities as social laboratories and playgrounds for collective imagination, ecovillages as experiential education opportunities, and challenging cultural ideas of self, success, and security. Enjoy this very last episode of season 1 of the podcast! Conversation Outline What is an ecovillage? (05:10) How does an ecovillage function (8:30) What stereotypes around this idea exist? Join Maeve McBride, a climate justice organizer and writer, as she shares stories about her intertwined paths of seeking justice and finding spirit. Maeve will share poetry, song, and her lived experiences, weaving together vignettes from her past, transformative moments, and maybe even some nuts-and-bolts of organizing direct actions. She will draw from her work organizing a five-day climate walk in Vermont, blockading oil trains, and her recent practice of movement chaplaincy. Listen to her thoughts on how we can thrive while doing the seemingly impossible work of dismantling the nasty -isms of our time - capitalism, racism, colonialism - to name a few.Maeve (she/her) is a white settler of predominantly Scot-Irish, English, and German heritage living on Abenaki land in what is now known as Vermont. Maeve is currently the Fundraising Director at the Global Ecovillage Network and organizes with the No Coal, No Gas campaign, working to shutter the last coal-fired power plant in New England. For many years, Maeve was the director of 350Vermont, an affiliate organization of 350.org, where she organized local, regional, and national actions and events. Maeve's professional background is varied - from political campaigns to the US EPA, from river engineering in Alaska to fieldwork in Philadelphia. One of Maeve's current passions is reclaiming her family's farming roots by starting a small cooperative farm in Jericho, where she and her family recently relocated. Maeve also writes memoirs, poetry, and prose on the subjects of grief, land connection, somatics, social justice, and god. “I am a storyteller; that's what I do…” Welcome to this week's episode with the delightful, insightful and charming, Professor Jonathan Dawson.Jonathan might describe himself as a storyteller, however, in this episode it is not Jonathan telling the story: we deconstruct “The Story” or many narratives that we have all been told, which play a huge part in the cause of our climate crisis.“The key narrative that we live within, that really needs to be challenged, is that which governs how we experience the other than human world. Because the messaging is, ‘you look at a tree and its timber', rather than being an intelligent being. This is the critical bit, because as long as we have stories that these are inanimate objects that are out there for our use, as long as we do that we can continue to sh*t on the world, and if we are going to stop, a big part of the story needs to be that we see the world in different eyes and we see ourselves as living within an animate universe as one brand of intelligence among many other forms of intelligence.”Jonathan is a sustainability educator and a former President of the Global Ecovillage Network. He has 20 years of experience as a researcher, author, consultant, and project manager in the field of small enterprise development in Africa and South Asia and before joining the College he was a long-term resident at the Findhorn Ecovillage. We spoke in length about the many issues which have lead to our need to redefine how we live, in particular Findhorn, which is an amazing example of how a community can live sustainably.“People associate having a low foot print with suffering. In Findhorn, nobody needed television as what was happening outside their front door was so interesting. This is what we need to bring, we are not talking about sacrifices, we are talking about retuning into who we are as a species, and what floats our boats and it is not buying whatever gismo it may be, it is reconnecting with people and finding your own place within your community.”A very insightful episode - we hope you got as much from it as we did.Big love,Dave & SteveReferenceRichard Heindberg‘Small is Beautiful' by E.F. Her response to the destruction globalisation has had by way of media, food production etc.. and the impact it has had on businesses and individuals, is truly inspiring. "I really wish before I die that we wake up to look at the bigger picture, which is the bigger system that has essentially imprisoned us and kept us running faster and faster, and as we are running faster and faster we are becoming more and more disconnected internally. We are becoming more and more disconnected from others and from nature, from the land..."There is so much we can learn from Helena, one podcast episode isn't enough! Through the support of ever-growing subsidies, trade deals, and taxes global corporations have ballooned, creating a highly violent, exploitative, and absurd global trade system. What does it mean to design a regenerative culture? How we can become regenerative by design? What we can be doing in our daily lives to be part of the urgent change we need to see in the world? These are the questions we explore today. It is my great pleasure to share with you on Sense-making in a Changing World today, a conversation I recorded with Daniel Christian Wahl PhD as we walked through the ancient olive terraces around the medieval monastery, Son Rullan on the island of Mallorca in the Mediterranean. We met there last year for the first time - the beginning of a friendship after knowing of each other's work for years. We both are deeply involved in ecovillages, education, regenerative design and have a deep affiliation with Schumacher College, the Global Ecovillage Network and Gaia Education.Daniel's book, Designing Regenerative Cultures, published in 2016 is essential reading - helping us to reframe the crises we currently face and exploring how we can live our way into the future.Son Rullan has hosted many ecological gatherings and conversations, including an Ecovillage Design Education program, and my family and I were so graciously welcomed there as guests for the duration of our stay.Daniel and I talked in pre-COVID times, but I am sharing this again because what Daniel shares is so relevant to where we find ourselves today.I hope you enjoy this conversation with Daniel and I invite you to share this episode and subscribe to my podcast here.Find out more about permacultureThere's lots of free permaculture resources on my Our Permaculture Life Youtube and blog. Welcome you to Series 2 of Leading in a Climate Changed World, by Olivier Mythodrama. Leading in a climate Changed World, is about exploring the leadership that’s required to take on the of the climate crisis and how we engage with environmental and ecological challenges that we are facing, in increasing regularity. Importantly, this podcast isn’t necessarily aimed towards people already participating in this type of work and it’s not focused on ‘leaders’ in the traditional sense. We want to connect with people from all walks of life, in all positions of employment and experience, young to old. One of the messages that consistently came from series 1, was that you can make a difference whatever your situation. The objectives of the podcast are to identify qualities of leadership and recommended practices, and how can we develop leaders with these qualities. We take a look at where are we seeing progress, either in people, companies and organisations, even countries. We also look at what’s not working? What’s preventing movement in this important field? Whether it’s society, culture, politics.Whether it’s a message of hope or despair, we hope there will be inspiration and information to help you along the way. In our first episode of the series, we reintroduce Robin Alfred, our senior leadership programme director and interviewer extraordinaire. Robin speaks to Kosha Joubert who is CEO of the Global Ecovillage Network. They discuss vital qualities in leadership and how to reengage with practices, which can allow us to connect deeply with current circumstances. In addition, I want to introduce you to The Communities for Future Summit, an entirely free, online experience hosted by Kosha’s organisation, the Global Ecovillage Network. The Communities for Future Summit will take place from 1 to 10 February 2020, bringing leading-edge thinkers and leaders from around the globe engaging in concrete action for a just and regenerative future. Participation in Summit is completely free and the interviews can be accessed online. Please visit summit2020.ecovillage.org to sign up. I hope you enjoy this episode, we already have a number of big names and people from well-known organisations and movements lined up, so please follow or subscribe to the podcast. Thousands of people today are opting to live with an intention to work and play together in establishing a high quality yet low impact lifestyle. Nested Communities Blending nature and architecture into one’s daily living, opens a new vista of possibility for both creativity and group dynamics. To welcome birdsong outside our window every morning, to look upon lush fragrant flower gardens, shrubs and trees. Whilst the hum of singing and children’s hushed yet focussed activities - garnishes collaboration and goodwill - as we are again re-envision what it is like to be human and learn as to how people can live together in co-creative harmony.      As we realise the speed and noise of city life is impacting our world, with megacities overwhelming us with their raw and yawning sprawling footprint - the Global Ecovillage Network is springing up like quintessential life force nodal points - all around the curvature of our home planet - taking us into the next evolutionary spiral of an awakening earth, nested in a regenerating biosphere. A renewal of human endeavour  This is an inspired idea, to embrace a renewal of our being and unfold our spiritual quest to realise our potential as an individual tightly coupled within the human family - shaping a new tomorrow for our children’s, children’s, children. Recognising that within the new emerging paradigm limitation has no boundaries. In this interview, Kosha tells us:           That the Global Ecovillage Network was set up in 1995 and it came about by ‘reading the feedback’ of human beings and sensing that people globally were wanting to come together to live in communities, some of them intentional and for all manner of reasons - and that the underlying principle was that all participators realised that our present day civilisation was undoing the very fabric of both nature and the way we were living. Also, that we need to reconnect again with each other in a duty of care and by being mindful, take over as guardians of life, by connecting to the power of community. That by their duty of care and inner wisdom realised that they had to not only sustain life but more so - regenerate life for all biota - within the majesty of our life supporting biosphere. So the Global EcoVillage Network is at heart an ever expanding cooperative endeavour - to support and assist the many more communities that are coming together by all manner of means as of this very moment. Kosha says they continue to reach out to areas that we know very little about - for example, North African countries and linking and networking with people of great integrity. From this they are able to share their experience, knowledge and solutions to assist new communities to grow and prosper. Group dynamics is often driven by some one who is an experienced ‘link’ person, able to act as the focaliser and may have strengths in Permaculture or Co housing - or Transition Towns - so have a deep knowingness as to how communities can cohesively ‘come into being.’ She talks about inner change that happens when we work for the betterment and the greater good. This may be by one’s connection to nature or even indigenous cultures - that are often the seed of such a project. Yet, know we can not do these projects alone, because they are all people oriented and so with the focus on being part of the solutions - in a group situation - this is when novelty and creative energies converge-  synergistically - and profound creative works evolve. Based on all 4 areas of regeneration - around ecology, economy, social and culture. GEN is also involved in supporting - co-op gardens - Green cafes, green schools - business wanting to become more holistically green - and conscious.   Stepping up - from - eco communities. Up to 20 adults and more adults are called an ecovillage from there to - eco neighbourhoods - eco cities - eco regions and eco nations and eco civilisations. Being all encompassing - Ecos - the Greek word Oikos to do with taking care of the home - the ecos-sphere - coming home to Our planet. Global Family It's a whole movement that is transforming human presence on our planet - from the individual up to societal change. Kosha mentions the what is unrealised and un-utilised is "Good Intentions” -  and their wish is to have this play out in as being a part of the solution.- and to show a pathway there - ‘they’ in her words - love to go there. And she is dealing with politicians from the UN to the EU and Corporates etc - they all have grandchildren - and this is the common denominator    Indigenous communities are mentioned as being very important. As with the increasingly rapid changes brought about by technical and industrial man it has thrown so many traditions out of balance. Especially, as to what is happening with globalised land management, like industrial agriculture, cropping, harvesting, transport and marketing, that so many countries are having major challenges in adapting to this fast moving world. Particularly as to housing and educating the rural population to be participators in the future of their regions and countries.   Kosha also says that we are meant to sing ourselves back into life - that at heart need to find ourselves in a secure and peaceful situation that we are able to just sing ourselves into happiness. There are community gardens in Auckland where people come to garden yet, sing as well. De-colonialisation - how do we heal this? Especially land issues that have not been acknowledged with indigenous peoples all around the globe who have been unfairly discriminated against. They feel very good about GEN and what it offers. To be able to learn the skills to reconcile many of the injustices that have happened over time.   Aotearoan Maori.  Especially regarding the marae becoming the centre of eco village learning.           Subjects covered:  organic food growing, permaculture - renewable energy, and the fact that in the early 1970’s the then Labour Government offered up opportunities to return to the land under the name of Ohu’s -  where grants could be obtained for small communities to make the rural sector more productive.    Currently GEN reaches out to over 6,000 communities worldwide, having a presence in 114 countries around our planet. So they are very well placed to be able to offer substantial advice and information for any prospective groups of people wanting to commit to building a community, that and ways about getting funding for infrastructure etc. Business Enterprises GEN is focussing on social entrepreneurship so as to make communities resilient and viable and there are many innovative ways to cooperate and collaborate. Time banks, Green dollars, savings pools and all manner of ways to make diversify into the marketplace. They have so many resources to share as to how to sustainably build up a successful, localised, economic model.   UBUNTU There were many other questions that did not get asked, especially the term Ubuntu, which comes from South Africa where Kosha was born. “Ubuntu” is an African expression of ancient wisdom, which is echoed by all ancient civilizations. It simply means “unity within community” where everyone contributes their natural talents or skills for the greater benefit of all. In order to create such harmonious communities, we, the people, must lead to a new ‘consciousness’ - without the need for any violence, opposition or conflict – by simply creating a new alternative – a new system – a new way of doing things – because the old way simply does not work for us anymore. To be able to create a new system in which competition turns into collaboration. To birth a new society in which we all benefit from our collective efforts and individual talents.   This interview with Kosha gives an excellent entry level understanding and overview of how to approach the challenges of forming an intentional (or any other) community - that allows for more creativity and freedom to chart one’s own course in a localised ecological setting. One where you can tap into the resources of a huge network of like minded yet diverse conscious people. This being a forerunner to a new planetary paradigm. https://ecovillage.org

We emit 37 gigatons of CO2 every year. If we turned our agricultural waste alone into biochar, we could bring that number down by one or two gigatons. If we poured our roads with biochar and started turning waste streams like seaweed and municipal waste into biochar as well, we could get that number up to 50 or 60 gigatons of stored carbon annually. And that kind of net gain would get us back down to a safe level of 350 ppm of atmospheric CO2—in time scales of decades. Albert Bates is the author of several books on climate solutions, including Burn: Using Fire to Cool the Earth and The Biochar Solution. He is also a former environmental rights lawyer, mushroom farmer, brick mason and horse trainer. Albert cofounded the Global Ecovillage Network in 1995 and continues to serve as the organization’s representative in UN climate talks. He is also an advocate for the preservation of indigenous cultures and a leader in the movement to drawdown carbon with biochar. Today, Albert joins Christophe and Alexsandra to share his unique path from the courtroom to the ecovillage, describing how he came to study terra preta soils and get involved in the biochar movement. He discusses the pore structure of charcoal in the rich soil of the Amazon and explains why biochar remains in the soil for thousands of years. The ecovillage movement is growing: worldwide, new communities and inhabitants of existing villages and suburbs are consciously choosing the path of sustainable development. In the face of both ecological and economical crisis, poverty in the South and social isolation in the urban North, people are coming together to assume joint responsibility for their region, its resources and their social surroundings. In the process they find themselves actors in and creators of their own reality. Learn all about the good, the bad, and the ugly as Jonathan Dawson takes you on a journey through the world of ecovillages. In the last twenty years ecovillages (local communities which aim to minimise their ecological impact but maximise human wellbeing and happiness) have been springing up all over the world. They incorporate a wealth of radical ideas and approaches which can be traced back to Schumacher, Gandhi and the alternative education movement. This Briefing describes the history and potential of the ecovillage movement, including the evolution of the Global Ecovillage Network and the current developments. The threads that are brought together in Ecovillages include: learning from the best elements in traditional and indigenous cultures, community banks and currencies, using permaculture design, eco-building, locally-based food production and processing, reviving small-scale participatory governance. In an age of diminishing oil supplies, the Briefing examines the lessons that we can learn from ecovillages to show us how to live in a more ecologically sound and sustainable way. =================================== Contact Ecovillage Library Podcast at: ecovillagelibrary@gmail.com or leave a voice message and get featured in the next podcast episode!
