In this episode, we dive deep into the dark and gritty world of grimdark literature with the authors behind the upcoming anthology No Happy Endings. Join us as we discuss the challenges of writing short stories, the submission process, and what defines grimdark as a genre. We explore influences ranging from classic literature to video games, delve into the role of dark rituals in storytelling, and reflect on the impact of societal issues on the themes of grimdark fiction. The conversation also touches on the rise of cozy fantasy as a counterbalance to grimdark's bleak settings, contrasting the grim with the lighthearted. Along the way, we share book recommendations, including works by Joe Abercrombie, The Black Company, and Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melniboné. Whether you're a seasoned grimdark reader or new to the genre, this episode offers fresh perspectives on storytelling, writing challenges, and the evolution of modern fantasy.Tune in for a thoughtful and engaging discussion on what makes grimdark literature resonate and why it's more relevant than ever!Find out guests:Armanis:Universal Booklink: No Happy EndingsTwitter: ArmanisBlusky:ArmanisKieran: Website: flying squirrels editing services | Flying Squirrels Editing Services (square.site)I'm not really active on Twitter, but I may go on once in a blue moon. New Mexico stan, history buff, and fluent German-speaker New Mexico Supremacist joins us in third chair for another German folk song. Wir sind des Geyers schwarzer Haufen (We are Geyer's Black Company). The song, while written in the early 1920's, details the struggles of the common man in the German Peasants' War of 1524-1525 and specifically the only heavy calvalry unit to fight on the side of the peasants during the conflict: Florian Geyer's Black Company. The ballad is strongly anti-cleric and anti-noble and has been used by various groups in Germany to rally youth to their cause... oh the German Peasant's War? Yeah it's pretty obscure, you probably haven't heard of it. Spoiler alert: everybody dies. This week's episode features Cameron and guest host Chris. They discuss the Black Company by Glenn Cook. This book is a classic of the grim, realistic, morally ambiguous fantasy novels that are so popular today, think of it as the grandaddy to Game of Thrones! The Black Company was published in 1984 and is 319 pages long and is the first of 10 books in the series. The last book in the series was published in 2000 so you can read knowing when you hit the last book its done!

To learn more about Japanese black companies, check out our article on Tofugu: https://tfg.li/2v0V0jv --- Do you want to work in Japan? Sure, we all do. But before you take that sweet new job with the Tokyo semiconductor conglomerate, maybe you should do some research to find out if it's a... BLACK COMPANY! (dun dun dun) "Black company" is the name Japanese people give to companies that are not so great to work for. Sexual harassment, unpaid overtime, required alcohol consumption, bullying; you name and a black company does it (to you). Kanae, our current Tofugu intern, used to work at a black company in Tokyo, and she shares her experience so YOU can avoid these problems. Learn all the warning signs of Japanese black companies, which may be hard for foreigners to see (because they're entering into unfamiliar territory anyway). After listening to this podcast, you'll be able to steer clear of unhealthy work environments and straight into that sweet, sweet dream job in Japan. iTunes:https://tfg.li/tofugu-podcast Google Play: https://tfg.li/tofugu-gplay
The Black Company (1984 - novel) John’s pick for success is the a fantasy book series that feels modern and fresh compared to the high-fantasy we’re used to. The series debuted a decade before Game of Thrones. The books follow a group of mercenaries as they try to survive in a war where they have been hired by the ‘evil’ side. The first in this series was Author Glen Cook’s first published book. You can purchase the Black Company on Amazon or your local bookstore. The audiobook is pretty good too. NEXT WEEK: We welcome guest host Adam Moerder back to discuss Hot, Hot, Hot - starting w/ John’s pick “Screamers” by Dan O’Bannon, based on a short story by Philip K. Dick. The Player (1992 - movie) Giaco’s pick for success is the Robert Altman film from the early nineties that is widely known for its, at the time, record length opening shot. The story is very Hollywood. It explores a thriller against the shallow backdrop of the sausage making of big studio films. Tim Robbins stars as a soulless producer and studio exec. who rarely drinks a drop and who’s passions are all self-serving. You should continue on through the rest of Robert Altman’s work, Popeye, M.A.S.H., Nashville- all works of a master. To purchase The Player (we recommend Criterion) you can go to Amazon or iTunes. You can stream it on FilmStruck. ______________________ NEXT WEEK: We conclude Success w/ John’s pick - the novel “The Black Company” from Glen Cook. Arash and The Black Company get into the history of the camp and discuss the similarities and differences between the Renaissance Faire and the Burner communities. They also get into community politics and the difference between playing and escaping.
Continuing the series of podcasts we recorded in Saratoga Springs at the World Fantasy Convention, we sat down with distinguished fantasy writers Glen Cook and Steven Erikson, discussing the genesis of Cook's influential Black Company and Dread Empire series and other novels, and Erikson's hugely popular Malazan Book of the Fallen. In addition to their approaches to character and world-building, they offer insights into how Steve's background in archaeology influenced his work, and what it was like for Glen to live with Fritz Leiber many years ago. Our thanks to Glen and Steve for making time in their busy schedules as guests of honour at WFC2015 to sit down and talk to us for the podcast. As always, we hope you enjoy the episode.

When you are a band of mercenaries to hire, you don't really care what the job is. When it turns out that you are going to have to go into battles with big bad evil dark sorcerers recently out of their grave, well, so be it! To battle we go! Told from the perspective of Croaker, the doctor and the historian, The Black Company is a fascinating tale of adventure despite its slow start. Once the story starts moving and the reader finally figures out who is who, and who is behind it all, hold on to your seat, you are in for a bumpy ride! The Black Company is a mix between medieval fantasy and an epic tale filled with mystery, first in a long series of books that will little by little fill in all the gaps and leave the reader satisfied, fulfilled with a plot well wrapped and characters well developed
