POPULARITY
Innovation and disruption have not been typical keywords used to describe the seniors housing and care industry. This perception is rapidly changing thanks in large part to today's guest, Bob Kramer, a self-described serial social entrepreneur and founder and president of Nexus Insights, an advisory firm that helps clients redefine aging and rethink aging services. His many decades in the field, coupled with his penchant for thinking outside the box has earned Kramer a reputation as an iconoclast and agitator in the field. His conversation with Susan Ryan in this episode tracks with this moniker and spans his experience as a Maryland state legislator, the establishment of the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing and Care in 1991, as well as his call for a shift from “sick care” to “well care” in the field. What's more, Kramer discusses the strategic importance of influencing people to drive lasting change, drawing from his experience in politics. In addition, he asserts that there is now a profound opportunity for disruptive change in long-term services and supports.

Join us for a conversation with one of senior living's most influential and high-profile thought leaders and connectorsWith over 35 years of industry leadership, Bob has earned the reputation of “agent provocateur” in the seniors housing and care industry and aging services field. He has been described as an ice-cutter and scout in identifying industries and trends that will disrupt the future of seniors housing, aging services, and aging more broadly. On January 20, Bob Kramer's Marrionnettes went up in flames. The fire claimed the 125-seat theater, a workshop, gift shop and residence and, most significantly, Bob Kramer's life. Firefighters rescued his longtime partner, Dug Feltch, who spent four days in the hospital unconscious. Dug Feltch joins the show to remember his partner and to listen back to an excerpt of a 2015 conversation with Kramer.
One of the most powerful voices in the business of aging well, Bob Kramer shares his vision for transformational change in senior housing and healthcare, solutions for the crippling staffing crisis, and exciting collaborations with NIC and Nexus Insights. About Bob Bob Kramer is Founder and Fellow at Nexus Insights, a think tank advancing the well-being of older adults through innovative models of housing, community and healthcare. Mr. Kramer is also Co-founder, former CEO, and now Strategic Advisor at the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care (NIC). He is broadly recognized as one of senior living's most influential and high profile thought leaders and connectors. With over 35 years of industry leadership, he has earned the reputation of “agent provocateur” in the seniors housing and care industry. He has been described as an “ice-cutter” and scout in identifying industries and trends that will disrupt the future of seniors housing, aging services, and aging more broadly. In 1991, Mr. Kramer co-founded NIC to advance access and choice in seniors housing and care by attracting capital to grow the sector. Under his leadership, NIC became the go-to resource for data and analytics for the rapidly expanding seniors housing and care industry and an acknowledged thought leader for new ideas and trends impacting the provision of housing, services and care for older adults. Mr. Kramer stepped out of the CEO role in 2107 and continues to serve NIC as Strategic Advisor. A former county government official and Maryland state legislator, Mr. Kramer was a leader on health and environmental issues while representing the state capital of Annapolis in the 1980s. Mr. Kramer was educated at Harvard and Oxford Universities and holds a Master of Divinity degree from Westminster Theological Seminary. Key Takeaways The staffing crisis is the second pandemic. Senior living communities are trying to do more with less. Staff are suffering from physical and mental exhaustion. Senior living needs to move away from a model based on care and assuming decline and deficit, to an aspirational model based on lifestyle and personalization. In the past 10 years, assisted living has focused on marketing care and stopped selling lifestyle, community and engagement. The future is about enabling a sense of purpose, belonging and connection. Age-tech has exploded. Ten years ago, the age-tech category was nonexistent. This year, CES (Consumer Electronic Show) partnered with the AARP's Agetech Collaborative on an entire area dedicated to age-tech startups.
Bob Kramer, founder of aging services think tank Nexus Insights; co-founder, former president and CEO and current senior adviser to the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care; and recipient of the 2023 Career Achievement Award as part of the inaugural McKnight's Pinnacle Awards, discusses the past, present and future of senior living, including how operators will need to change to remain viable, what they can learn from the recent Southwest Airlines debacle, and the most important piece of advice he has for providers.
Noah Vachon is one of the most articulate people in the knifemaking game. His beginnings in music and Guitar building totally influenced his style, and approach that permeate his work at Vachon Knives (even if he doesn't think so). We caught up on the new year and what's been going on. Realized we were 20 blocks away from each other as we rung in Y2K and had a great time talking about the pressure of performance and what it takes to be an artist. Noah is also doing “Knife Coaching” sessions which is a great way to get help if you want one on one knife making tips. Definitely consider this great opportunity. My friend Julia Sexton is back and I'm glad. She is an incredible food writer and Editor in Chief of Edible Manhattan, Edible Brooklyn. Edible Hudson Valley and Edible Westchester. Dedicated to food writing and the restaurant biz Julia is the last of a dying breed. TikTok food reviews and social media influencers are the new delivery system for the masses to find out where to go out for something to eat. Are the days of thoughtful food reviews gone? Not if Julia has anything to say about it. We a great time talking about Anthony Bourdain, restaurant reviews and pondered what foods are Underrated, Overrated or just fine. We just scratched the surface. Julia will be back. As a young boy alone, listening to the radio I used to love the episodes when radio hosts would go on holiday vacation and have a fill in. So I started having my two friends Ben Snure and Jonathan Porter on and we'd fool around for a Black Friday show. We should be having Thanksgiving with our families and were recording a podcast instead. Perfect. This is the 3rd year of this tradition and unfortunately JP was having Technical issues that made him have to bow out this year. He was missed and we'll figure something out soon. In the meantime Ben and I had a great time telling stories and dissecting crazy stories about Black Friday shopping. If you are not familiar with Black Friday Sales, theres a long history of Stores opening up early, slashing prices and making customers have totally outrageous behavior. We covered lots of human depravity looking for a sale. Sheesh. It was fun tho. Ben is always good on the mic and we had a blast. Thanks again and support small business this year. I'm honored to talk to my great friend and podcasting partner on Knife Talk, Craig Lockwood about the debut of his new Single: “This Town”. You are reading that correctly.. Knife Maker, podcaster and now Recording Artist…Craig is a man of many talents and had the bucket list opportunity to record at the legendary studio Rockfield; home to Queen, David Bowie, Ozzy Osborn, Oasis, Coldplay and many more. How did this happen? We got into the anatomy of his song “This Town”, and got to hear the development with early sounds clips. How he met famed producer Nick Brine and incredible stories about Rockfield and how that recording studio embedded itself into rock history—-we fooled around a little at the end to. Always fun and Craig rules. Jesse & Butch are 2 knife makers out of Pennsylvania who I've known for a while and gotten to hang out with at Makercamp. Part of a great group of makers around Philadelphia I wanted to some perspective on the end of the World Series with the Phillies as an incredible underdog story. After being counted out this season, the Phillies kept advancing in the post season past the Cardinals then the favorited Atlanta Braves its hard not to root for the underdog. Philadelphia is an undo city and we talked about it. After catching up we also told Philly stories and found out that the City of Brotherly love needs more respect. As a born and bred New Yorker, I bleed pinstripes. I was furious that the Yankees rolled over against the Astros. But I've never rooted for another team more than the Phillies. Butch and Jesse Rule and it was fun catching up. Vince and Ryan are the owners of Brodbeck Ironworks, one of the fastest growing Grinder companies around today. I met them both a few years ago and have been a fan of them and their company for a while. Both mechanical engineers and knife makers they met as competitors on the TV phenomenon “Forged in Fire” on similar paths. It was a fascinating conversation on who they are how they met and what are the chances that meeting on FIF would create this partnership. Fast forward to Brodbeck grinders are now on the set of of the show they met on. Stories of immigrating from violence torn El Salvador to taking a chance on a partnership, Brodbeck Ironworks is an example of the American Dream. Definitely listen to this Episode and give them a follow. Kev Slattery and I have been friends on Instagram when I first started making knives. A leader in Austrailan bladesmithing , Kev has been a huge part of the kindness, supportive and generous nature this community exemplifies while also and giving back by teaching and creating a very popular podcast with a cult following. We had a great catch up talking about our first meeting at Bladeshow, Australian knifemaking and the unique podcast he is a co-host of called “Knife Making Down Under”. We also talked about his struggles in the last 18 months. Years of pain lead Kev to the depths and back and I truly appreciate his bravery and candor in telling a very difficult story. Kev has started a crowd funding page to help raise money for the procedure he needs to fix his back. You may think you know industry thought leader Bob Kramer, NIC co-founder & strategic advisor and founder of Nexus Insights, but in this engaging interview, you'll learn some things that may surprise you. Kramer shares stories on how he started in the seniors housing industry, his tips on living an authentic life, his insights on the future, and even his taste for rock concerts!
One of senior living's most influential leaders discusses why he is bullish about investment opportunities in the aging space, and bearish on the ability of many of today's biggest operators to satisfy new demand. About Bob Bob Kramer is Founder and Fellow of Nexus Insights, a thought leadership platform dedicated to the dissemination of ideas and models that challenge the status quo and contribute to the transformation of housing and aging services for older adults. He is also Co-founder, former CEO, and now Strategic Advisor at the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care (NIC). Described as an “ice-cutter,” he is masterful at identifying industries and trends that will disrupt the status quo and shape the future of senior housing, aging services, and aging more broadly. In 1991, he founded NIC to advance access and choice in seniors housing and care by attracting capital to grow the sector. Under his leadership, NIC became the go-to resource for data and analytics for the rapidly expanding seniors housing and care industry and an acknowledged thought leader for new ideas and trends impacting the provision of housing, services, and care for older adults. Educated at Harvard and Oxford Universities, he holds a Master of Divinity degree from Westminster Theological Seminary. Key Takeaways The pandemic has exposed a broken system in long-term care that has, in the words of Joseph Coughlin at the MIT age lab, “propelled us into our future faster.” Fundamental change in how we think about aging and retirement will drive innovation in seniors housing and services. Senior living of the future will not be called senior living. The biggest trend in senior living is a move from surviving to thriving—from a dependency-driven model of aging emphasizing care and amenities, to a community model allowing people to contribute and flourish. It's not just about lifelong learning, it's learning for a longer life. Locating senior living facilities around universities is a natural because attending college was a formative experience for Boomers. Senior living is experiencing disruptive innovation—if you don't change, you're going to get “disrupted” right out of business.

Craig chats with Mareko Maumasi from Maumasi Fire Arts about his apprenticeship with Bob Kramer, his beautiful kitchen knives and the fantastically detailed damascus steel he produces.
This week I’ve got David Lisch, he’s a blacksmith turned award-winning Master Smith knife maker, from Yelm, Washington. A respected innovator of unique guard designs and Damascus steel that can be seen in his beautiful knives. David has run a successful blacksmith business for 25 years in Seattle and now teaches at his school, Oak Grove Forging Facility in Yelm WA. He achieved a Master Smith rating from the American Bladesmith Society (ABS)in 2015 and is the 6th Master Smith in the state of Washington. Now you’ll have to listen all the way to the end of the interview, because after I wrapped it up with Dave and we said our good bye’s I always turn off the recorder and follow up with the guest to see how they thought it went. In this instance, I ended up asking Dave about the Forged in Fire comment he mentioned, so I turned the recorder back on and you could hear his Forged in Fire experience. What We Talked About David now fills most of his time making high-end award-winning knives and teaching classes which fill up in 1 to 2 days after posting. He used to have a shop and school in Seattle for 15 years where he textured metal for Nordstrom’s and other companies. When marijuana became legal in Washington state, the warehouse spaces quickly became grow houses and in turn, the rents were raised and warehouses for rent were hard to find. The increase in David’s rent from $2500 to $3200 eventually made him move out and buy a property that had both a house and shop space. These days David is incorporating his sculptural side of blacksmithing to his blades. He recently sold a frog (for $10k) with a dagger coming out of his throat and a Damascus dragonfly on his tongue. David was introduced to Damascus at one of his friend’s shops, where a few blacksmiths got together and made some damascus. Then at one of the NWBA (North West Blacksmith Association) annual conferences, he traded a hammer he made for some Damascus making stock. He started making Damascus before he ever made a blade! His first knife making class was from Bob Kramer in 2006. After joining the American Bladesmith Society he became an apprentice bladesmith, then passed his journeyman smith certification, then 5 years later passed his master smith certification. In his shop, he has 330lb Wolf Air hammer, 165 lb Wolf air hammer, 3 hydraulic presses, 10 grinders and 10 anvils. He has been a member of the NWBA for over 20 years and he and his wife have served on the board for 4 years. David will be demonstrating at the upcoming CBA Spring Conference and he will demo knife making for beginners (staghorn small knife with a 4 in blade) and have separate demonstrations for intermediate and expert knife makers. Including pinning on a wood handle for a kitchen knife, shaping guards and finishing techniques. He makes all of his own gas forges, they are 1 burner venture forges made from cut up oxygen tanks, 11 inches long. He says it’s very important to coat the Kaowool inside your forge with a refractory castable cement. He uses Mizzou castable in his forges, you can find it online. Craig chats with knife making legend and Master Bladesmith, Bob Kramer. Bob talks about his humble beginnings as a knifemaker, his process, inspirations and plans for the future.

Bling, the Urban Dictionary tells me, is an onomatopoeic representation of light bouncing off a diamond. Or a Bob Kramer original hand-made chef’s knife, which goes for $2000 and up. Of course some people might be able to justify spending that kind of cash on what is, after all, one of the key tools of the trade … if your trade happens to be cooking. But my guest today, Peter Hertzmann, says he sees lots of knives, maybe not quite that expensive, hanging on the wall in people’s kitchens, unused. “Kitchen knives”, he told this year’s Oxford Symposium on Food and Cookery, are “the new bling”. Peter teaches knife skills, has written extensively on the topic, and one of the things he is adamant about is that you never chop, you slice. Even if you’re pretty handy with a blade, you can probably learn a thing or two from his video Three Aspects of Knife Skills. I know I did. Notes You can actually get a set of four Bob Kramer knives, plus a steel to ruin them with, for less than $2000. Intro music by Dan-O at DanoSongs.com. Outro music by Martin Simpson. And if I ever knew, I’d forgotten that the song was written by Cat Stevens.
