Check out the video of this interview here! Chris Turner. Clifton Yarborough. Charles Turner. Timothy Catlett. Our guests today spent 30+ years behind bars, being a number and not a name. We made sure their names are right at the very beginning to honor Chris, Cliff, Charles, and Tim as human beings who were never just numbers. The Catherine Fuller murder occurred in Washington, D.C. in 1984. During the trial, eight boys were tried (4 of which are our guests today), wrongfully convicted, and sentenced to about 30 years in prison each. Their story came to light in Tom Dybdahl's new book When Innocence Is Not Enough. Tom was interviewed in the last episode, YouTube video interview here. Tom summed up their story this way: “The men – boys, mostly, when it all began – were just guys from the 8th and H NE neighborhood in D.C. They had limited education and experience and resources… But each of them had a core of basic honesty. Under immense pressure, day after day after day, that core never cracked. They were offered leniency in exchange for statements of guilt… But they hadn't done the crime, so they wouldn't say otherwise. They did not want mercy. They wanted justice. They got neither. Yet they endured. They never sold their integrity for their freedom.” Having served their full sentences, Chris, Cliff, Charles, and Tim share with us their journey through prison, how they found the courage and strength to endure, and how they've created new lives after prison.  Links mentioned in this episode: Guests: Mayor's Office on Returning Citizen Affairs Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop ____________________________________ Toby Dorr: Books and Audiobook Website   Patreon YouTube Instagram Facebook Or head to https://linktr.ee/fierceconversations for all things Fierce Conversations with Toby. LSU football kicked off spring practice on Thursday and Brian Kelly addressed the media about where the team is with injuries, depth, and other positional battles early in the 2023 preseason. While a lot can change from now until the spring game on April 22 in Tiger Stadium and even more is bound to change from now until the start of the 2023 season against Florida State, Kelly mentioned that right now the offensive line is the thinnest position group for the Tigers. That will change once center Charles Turner returns from injury and when five star tackle Zalance Heard joins the group along with three other OL recruits, but Kelly continues to focus on the spring transfer portal period to address depth needs at offensive line. Plus, which newcomers will be able to contribute to the team right away? Kelly boasts about the transfer portal class, especially on the defensive side of the football, and says he will anticipate the entire transfer portal class to make an impact. But which newcomer will emerge this offseason? Finally, former LSU head basketball coach Will Wade has been hired as the head basketball coach at McNeese State. So you should care about today's podcast because our guest is someone who has spent a lot of time educating students. I believe it's over 22 years of distance learning 16 years of online teaching. But we'll talk about that more. Please leave a comment and subscribe. If you find this interesting. We'd love to have you listened to the next podcast. But Danny himself is currently the Director of biomedical writing programs. He's the professor of biomedical writing. He has a PhD in biology and has a decade at Wyatt where he worked on 14 MBAs. He redesigned he's now at the University of the sciences, where he redesigned the curriculum for the biomedical writing program significantly contributed to the creation of a graduate program in regulatory sciences and created or revised 12 courses. He's been the instructor for 10 regularly occurring courses and seven Special Topics courses, many of which have been taught multiple times. He's the author, co author of 14 manuscripts, two book chapters and numerous clinical reports. He's been on nine professionals, society, society meeting program committees, Danny, what did I miss? Dan Actually, it's now for book chapters because we have a second edition and significantly revised those two. So they really aren't the same thing anymore, since quite a bit happened between version one and version two. I have other manuscripts in the hopper. We'll see what happens. But that's part of Of course, being a professor. It's not just publish or perish. It's published because that's what we're supposed to do. Darshan Yeah. Ladies and gentlemen, our guest for the day, then Ben now, then you can thank you for coming on. I appreciate it. Dan Thanks for having me. Darshan It's so so let's, let's ask some basic questions. Right. Why did you decide to go from being in Wyatt working on NDA to being a professor? Well, Dan actually, I worked at y for a decade. I moved on from there. I was at Santa Fe, cinta labo for a bit over a year and then decided to go freelance. Darshan Okay. Dan So I freelanced. We kind of set an industry record before I left freelancing. I was hired in at the beginning of October, and we submitted an NDA in the middle of December. Darshan Wow. Then two months, right? Dan Yeah, two and a half months, and that product ultimately went to market, Darshan which was a dino, excuse me, which product was it? Dan Um, it was called ventes. It was it was a treatment for advanced prostate cancer used history colon, which was an off patent drug that was originally used to treat precocious puberty, but they wrapped it up in a the material that was so as a combo product, it was wrapped up in a tube made out of material from gas permeable contact lenses and was then implanted under the skin. So it was good for a year in creating in treating metastatic prostate cancer. Darshan Okay, so so your your biology knowledge is not skin deep, if you will, a PhD Dan II Yeah, I'm actually just of interest anybody. My in terms of history and pedigree. My dissertation adviser Charles Turner himself had been a graduate student of Sir Hans Krebs, as in the Krebs cycle. Wow. And I met that guy a couple of times. Darshan That's kind of cool. "The average time to hire any sort of frontline healthcare worker - nationally - is 49 days. And that's by far the largest time to hire in any sort of macro industry in the United States." Charles Turner CEO, Kare (App) Today we're going to talk about Senior Housing - where do we live when we can't really live by ourselves any more? It's a really big market: Americans spend about $688 billion on senior housing services. But for a lot of people this is a scary thing to navigate. It's like the lint trap of the aging process - all the stuff you don't want to talk or think about collect in this one knotted up ball of yarn. In this episode I want to introduce you to a giant problem and one possible solution. Let's start with the problem: US Nursing Home workers turned over at mean rate of 128% in 2017 and 2018. For context - restaurant workers turn over at 17% per year. Can you even imagine trying to run a business when 128% of your workforce turns over every year? I can't. So what's going on here? Well there's obvious stuff: It's a hard job. You get paid hourly and schedules change week-to-week You don't get paid a lot - Caregivers in senior care facilities make $37,540.  If you start researching the senior housing labor statistics it gets depressing fast. I don't recommend doing this alone. To help us understand what's really going on and think about some positive solutions I want you to meet Charles Turner the founder and CEO of KARE. About Charles Turner and Kare An innovator in the senior housing space, Charles is currently the CEO of Kare, which is creating solutions to solve the labor shortage in senior care. Charles is also CEO of Invidia for Seniors, a multi platform company focused on improving the senior housing and care industry. Prior to Invidia, Charles was the President of Lifewell Senior Living and PinPoint Senior Living where he led development and operating initiatives for the companies. Invidia invests time, money and resources in technologies and programs that provide improve care and evidence based outcomes for its residents. Charles holds a B.A. in History and Politics from Wake Forest University and an M.B.A. in Finance from The University of Texas in Austin. Kare is a platform that empowers post acute caregivers to earn extra income and manage their own flexible schedules, while senior care communities decrease their operating costs by reducing high overtime wages and eliminating costly staffing agencies. Sarah talks with Hiruni Samadi Galpayage Dona, a Ph.D. student at Queen Mary University of London, about Charles Turner, a Black zoologist who published multiple times in Science in the early 1900s. Despite being far ahead of his time in his studies of animal cognition, Turner's work was long overlooked—due in large part to the many difficulties facing a Black man in academia at the turn of the century. He was one of the first hip-hop artists to become established, which also includes Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, Salt-n-Pepa, and Slick Rick. “Hip-hop was fun and energetic during this time. Hip-hop was just growing, so there was a lot of creativity and great live performances,” says Chuck. “Run-DMC and Whodini were some of the best live performances during this time”.After leaving 98.7 Kiss FM, Chuck worked at 107.5 WBLS FM for two years. In 1992, Chuck became a VJ for Video Music Box, the top-rated hip-hop video show in New York City.[citation needed] Chuck worked in 1995 by becoming one of the first DJs to play hip hop music in Japan. Hip-hop artists such as Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest, and Run-D.M.C. became known in Japan as a result. "Hip hop was very popular in Japan", said Chuck, "The people there knew the history of the artist I was playing as well as mine. Japanese people were totally into the culture".In 1989, he released an album with emcee Kool Chip called Masters of the Rhythm, which was released by Mercury/PolyGram Records. The album featured two regional hits, "Rhythm is the Master" and "I'm Large."In 1996, Chuck helped break DMX by being one of the first D.J.s to play his debut smash hit, "Get at Me, Dog". "I knew this record was going to be a smash because it was different from what was being played on the radio", Chuck said. "The beat was hot and delivery was different".[citation needed]Chuck established Full Blast Promotions in 1999, which is New Jersey's premier record pool.[citation needed] "I established Full Blast Promotions in New Jersey because there was a need for a premier record pool in New Jersey," Chuck stated. "D.J.s in New Jersey were hungry for a company such as Full Blast to step up and take over. [It] will continue to grow in the new millennium".[citation needed]Chuck's affiliation with old- and new-school hip hop and R&B has helped him remain a popular DJ. Most recently, his participation in the Essence Music Festival and cruise helped his career.Chuck returned to his roots at 98.7 Kiss FM during fall 2009.. Ahhhhh... this episode is really fresh! Today we're exploring some of the earliest DJ scratching noises ever put on a recorded release.  Back in the 1980s, hip-hop DJs were just beginning to discover how a turntable (or two) could be used as a sort of musical instrument. Some examples of these early scratches landed on albums or singles... there, to be preserved for all time. • Become a Patron of The Passionate DJ Podcast, and gain access to bonus episodes! In Episode 151, David picks one track from each year in the 1980s and we explore some early turntablism together. The songs we listen to are: (1981) Grandmaster Flash - The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel Joseph Saddler, aka Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Grandmaster Flash, is known as one of the pioneers of turntablism. Wheels of Steel is one of the earliest examples that was ever... well, put to wax. (1982) Malcolm McLaren - Buffalo Gals One of the stranger tracks on this list, Buffalo Gals was a UK smash and also hit big in some major US cities. This early 80s pop track contains quite a bit of early turntablism. (1983) Herbie Hancock - Rockit (I mean, obviously...) This show basically couldn't have been done without including this song. D.ST, the DJ on Rockit, was only 21 years old when asked to join Herbie's band and ended up touring with them for three years. (1984) DJ Chuck Chillout - Hip Hop on Wax Vol. 1 In '96, Chuck Chillout (aka Charles Turner) was responsible for helping DMX break onto the scene by playing Get At Me, Dog on the radio... but way back in the early 80s, he put out this scratchy cut. (1985) UTFO - Leader of the Pack UTFO's DJ, Mix Master Ice, took the classic Ahhhh scratch sound to a new level... and showed what a turntable can do in the hands of a capable DJ. (1986) Schoolly D feat. DJ QS.T - Maniac (Remix) A remix from a 1986 promo record, which featured “Gangster Boogie” on the other side. Listen to how clean some of these cuts are! (1987) Sir Mix-a-Lot - Electro Scratch Born Anthony Ray, he's been producing, rapping, and DJing since '83. While primarily known for Baby Got Back, many people aren't aware that he's a pretty wicked DJ. (1988) Hijack - Doomsday of Rap This group, credited as being inventors of Britcore, put out this highly-energetic hip-hop cut which contained some very spirited scratching. (1989) Gang Starr - Words I Manifest (Remix) A remix of this classic track was the much-preferred version of DJ Premier, who himself said "When we did the original I was still not that good at making beats yet." We also have a listen to the very first DMC Championship set from 1985 by Roger Johnson, which you can also check out here. The audio clip from the very end of the episode was sourced here. Sometimes it just seems right to get someone on the podcast. No they don't have to be known in the industry, or be internet famous, or have something to casually promote. They just bring some good old fashioned conversation to the table and a lot of laughs as well. This was the case with Niki, who after listening to the now infamous trilogy of  Jeremy Greer, Bryan Wade and Charles Turner asked if she could be on and talk about her boardgaming.  The episode you hear is only about 40% of what we talked about before we decided to actually record the show, which maybe explains the giggling at the beginning but not the rest of the nonsense that ensues. We spoke about a fair number of games, all of which are mentioned in some shape or form below. Niki was a delight to have on the show.
